In 10.7, I No longer have permissions to files I created in 10.6

I upgraded to Lion back in 2012 from Snow Leopard on my Macpro 1,1 (Because it can't go any higher than 10.7)
And to Mountain Lion from Snow Leopard on my Macbook Pro 5,5.
One EXTREMELY ANNOYING change that was made (and continuing in Mountain Lion) is that I no longer have permissions to my files that once belonged to me in Snow Leopard.
And when upgrading from 10.5 to 10.6, this was never a problem.
If I created files or folders within Snow Leopard, once I upgraded to Lion (and Subsequently Mountain Lion on my Newer Macbook Pro), I have lost my rights to those files.
For example:
When I try to delete files off my system, I have to enter the password for my Snow Leopard OS (the password on the OS when the file was created).  Luckily I didn't change it.  If I didn't know the password, I would not be able to delete the file from my computer.
When I try to move a file or folder, instead of just Moving the location of the item, it creates a Copy instead, which takes up twice the space (Yes I know there are work arounds for this such as moving to the trash then recopying, but that still takes a lot of time).
What are the fixes to this?
Adjusting Share & Permissions in Info does not work.
Fixing Permission within Disk utility does not work.
Holding down the Command key also does nothing.
The OS is saying I do not own the file so I have to have the password from the true owner to do anything to it.
Please help.  This is extrememly cumbersome.

Could you further elaborate on this Migration Assistant?
See How do I set up a new Mac from an old one, its backups, or a PC? for an explanation of the difference between Setup Assistant and Migration Assistant and links to the gory details of each.
Using Migration Assistant instead of Setup Assistant usualliy causes permissions problems, as detailed in the pink box in Problems after using Migration Assistant.
But you didn't use either; you just copied things from one user account to a different one (it may have had the same name, but a different UID), resulting in the same problem.
I created a file using OSX Leopard.  I used a different password.  Then I saved the file as I detailed above to the external drive.
I upgraded back to Mountain Lion and dragged the file back to my computer.  When I tried to move or delete the file, once again, it asked me for a password before I could delete the file.
This time, it would only accept the password from my system, when the file was created.
If I tried to type in my current Admin password, it would not move or delete.
The version of OSX doesn't matter.  You must have used two different user accounts -- they might have had the same name, but different UIDs.
One user, even an Admin user, doesn't normally have permission to a different user's files.
This is very frustrating.
No doubt.  Since you won't read the links that would fix the problem, you're not going to understand or be able to fix it.
Again: One user, even an Admin user, doesn't normally have permission to a different user's files.
Last time -- there are two very different things:
• Repair Disk Permissions via Disk Utility works on files installed by OSX or the OSX installer; not files you created, and not files on a disk that doesn't have OSX installed. See About Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions feature.
• Resetting Password and/or Home Folder Permissions sets the permissions on files in a home folder to the defaults.

but now I have no music files in my itunes when I open itunes....is there a step I missed?

Your iPod can only be synced with one computer at a time.  If you try to sync it with a new computer/iTunes library, it will replace the contents of the iPod with whatever is in the new library. You should probably disable the autosync functionality first by going to Edit -> Preferences, clicking the Devices tab, and enabling the prevent iPods,iPhones, and iPads from automatically syncing option.
Before doing anything else,  authorize the new computer with your iTunes Account.  In iTunes, choose Store -> Authorize This Computer and enter in the correct credentials. Either copy a backup file from your old computer to your new one or create a new backup of your iPod in iTunes before letting it sync.
Then right->click on your iPod Touch from under the Devices section in the left hand pane of iTunes and choose Backup. You might also want to take a look at this article to see what it all included in the backup.

  • No longer have permissions to access Time Machine.

I can no longer access or write to my time machine. i am not sure when this happened, because the previous recent occasions i've had to access it, i've done through my MPB, which, if you will read here (https://discussions.apple.com/message/16071164#16071164) i have managed to possibly seriously bork.
i do know that i have been successfully backing up to the machine up until at most 2 days ago and possibly just yesterday when the above disaster occurred.
now i cannot access any part of it.
i cannot find the "invisible" file that controls its permissions, though to be fair i'm not entirely sure where it lives. BUT, i do have hidden files showing, so that's potentially helpful if i can find the .001xxxxxxx-whatever file.
i cannot change the permissions on the desktop icon. they now sit with only everyone:read only and no others.
i cannot add a new user to the permissions; it says the name is invalid. probably because the whole thing is just read only.
after my as-yet-unresolved MPB nightmare, this has very nearly put me over the edge. please help.
    running: 10.6.8

Can you tell if it's Time Machine that's showing that error message?  I took a look at item C5 in Time Machine Troubleshooting.  It specifically refers to Leopard (OS X 10.5), which is another confirmation that the old advice you found about that hidden file no longer applies.
yep. it's time machine. when it tries to back up and fails, a message displays about it being read-only and to go ahead and repair it or reformat it. if i go to time machine prefs and select that drive to use for backup, that's when the other message about "necessary read, write and append privileges" displays.
So you mean the Desktop icons for the mounted Time Capsule disk, etc.  The icon for the volume containing the "sparsebundle" files should have an AirPort fan, not a network volume icon with the three people.  Item B4 of Time Machine Troubleshooting mentions that, although I'm not sure the advice given there would be useful in your case.
yep. i know, but that's what's there, nonetheless.
If you launch AirPort Utility, put the Time Machine into "manual setup" mode, select the Disks panel, then the File Sharing tab, is "Enable file sharing" checked?  What is the setting for "Secure Shared Disks"?
i checked and tinkered with this part already, too. it has always been set to enable. it originally had with "time capsule password", then i tried also with "disk password". now it's back to TC password. again, everything was fine a few days ago, and i haven't touched any airport or TM settings in probably a year or more.
small update: i was able to get into the capsule's backups finally after a few more passes using disk repair, so i can see that it was happily backing up until the 1st, when i had the aforementioned problem with my laptop. i can't see this being mere coincidence, so i know i must've also damaged the permissions for the TM/TC at the same time.

  • No longer have permissons to RAID drive

Hi. I was able to create a 1TB Raid and store all of my info. Now, however, I cannot access the drive. I can see the folders and files, but when I try to open them I get a "This operation could not be completed. Unexpected error occurred (error code -43)." Under sharing and permissons, I can only "read." There is no lock button to unlock and for me to change the permissons. I can also no longer add new files to the RAID drive.
Under the disc utitiliy it has it lised at RAID Set, online, but with a lock button under each slice.
    Raid Set Name: StorageRAID
Volume Format Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    RAID Type: Mirrored RAID Set
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

By the way, I cannot view the RAID in my windows bootcamp either. I can see the drives under computer management, but they are listed as status "Healthy (GPT Protective Partition)."
They also say they have 100% free space, which should not be the case. OS X at least notices 200GB is used.

  • I no longer have permissions to my external HD

I can't open my external disc which has my Time Machine backup as well as other data. I have spent hours trying the obvious stuff but it looks like it's to hard for me. The volume is 1 of 2 partitions on an external. 1 partition is a 600GB FAT(which I can access) and the other is a Mac Extended Journal which is the one that has a little lock on it now and I cannot get into.
Has anyone else had this problem and found away around this?
    Cheers for Xmas.

run the following terminal commands (copy and paste, please)
    sudo chflags 0 /volumes/*
    sudo chmod a+rx /volumes/*
you'll have to enter your admin password (which you won't see). that's normal. this should unlock your drives.

  • No longer have the original Captivate files but need to make changes to a movie

I have two Captivate movies for which I no longer have the
.cp files. Is there some way to import the existing parts of the
movies (.swf, html) into Captivate so that I can make changes or do
I need to start a new movie?
    Thank you,

There's no 'decompiler' to convert SWF files back to
    Captivate.
But I've seen references to decompilers to convert SWF files
    back to
Flash (FLA). You could search, find, and try one of
    those...but I'd
guess that the result wouldn't be very...edit-friendly.
Otherwise, you gotta start a new movie.

  • I no longer have Admin permissions?

My acct is an Admin level. I screwed everything up, did a restore using Time Machine, but I still do not have the ability to save a file in the root level or subfolders. Also, some apps are goofing up too.
What is the proper method for changing my permissions to be able to save files in a location other than my home directory?

that doesn't really tell us much. what did you screw up? you may not have used an old enough TM backup to fix whatever you did.
What is the proper method for changing my permissions to be able to save files in a location other than my home directory?
you should be very careful changing permissions outside your home directory. there is usually never a reason to do so. In general, to change permissions on something you select it in finder and press command+i. in the resulting info window you expand the permissions section at the bottom, unlock the lock and change permissions how you like it. However, as i said, you shouldn't normally be doing this outside your home directory, especially on system created folders. that can lead to all sorts of problems. in particular, NEVER EVER use "apply to enclosed items" button at the bottom of the permissions section to recusrsively change permissions on ANY system created folders. that includes your startup drive, the Applications folder, your home directory, your Desktop folder etc.

  • You do not have permissions to open the dashboard

On a clean install of 2012 R2, I joined an existing domain and added the Essentials role.  After that, I configured it which took about 5 minutes.  At the end, it placed an icon on the desktop called "Dashboard".  It will not allow
me to open this no matter what I try.  I get this error:
    Cannot open the Dashboard
You do not have permissions to open the dashboard.  Please log on as a network administrator and try to open the dashboard again.
I am using a domain admin account.  For laughs, I tried a couple accounts, but had no luck.
The log at "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows Server\Logs\dashboard.log" shows "Dashboard.Forms: Dashboard: Non domain admin cannot access dashboard."
Server Manager shows a green up arrow by Manageability for WSEE.
BPA shows only one error about Windows Server Backup and unsupported partition, which from what I gather is to be ignored as a false alarm.
Not sure what to do here.  Nothing seems to work.  Ideas?  Suggestions?

    Hi everyone!
I went in and tried all of your solutions, but none worked.
I have found the REAL solution to why this isn't working, and it should be corrected by Microsoft.
In the users profile, you can see the member of and primary group.
With my admin account, on Primary Group, I had "Domain Admins" as the group. It didn't work. I tried setting that to Enterprise Admins, and it worked and was able to get into dashboard. I set it back to Domain Admins, and it didn't work.
I set it as Domain Users, and it worked.
As long as you have the user in Domain Admins group, and primary group set to either "Domain Users" or "Enterprise Admins" -- it will always work. The account does NOT need to be in the Enterprise Admins group, just be sure to keep the
primary group on "Domain Users", and make sure it is in the "Domain Admins" group.
When the member above Lynn said they created a new account, it worked because ALL new user accounts are set to primary group of "Domain Users".
When the other user Brian Hoyt had to remove ALL administrator groups, it removed the primary role from "Domain Admins" to "Domain Users" which then worked. Then he added ALL admin groups (you do NOT need Enterprise Admins group) but
probably forgot to set the primary group, which is good and that is why it worked. When he copied the Admin account, the primary group always rolls over to the new account and is copied with it. When he removed all groups, he forgot to set back the primary
    group.
When Robert Pearman tried, he probably had the primary group set to something other than "Domain Admins" as well.
You don't want a Domain Admin (primary group) configuring your server. You want a domain user in Admin group (such as an employee to reset passwords), OR the Enterprise Admin (primary group)  to configure server applications, NOT a domain admin. So
I do see why Microsoft had this set the way it is.
So basically, you can NOT have the primary group to "Domain Admins". It needs to be either "Domain Users" OR "Enterprise Admins". The account MUST be in the "Domain Admins" group.
I do believe Microsoft should fix this issue, because it could be a bug, but also could be so that Domain Admins (primary group) can't screw applications that should be maintained and configured by Enterprise Admins (primary group).
I have made a video showing the problem was fixed, and this is the solution!

  • No longer have access to data directories after installing 2008 Express

I installed SQL Server 2008 Express on a virtual 2008 R2 Server, configured with separate drives for the various data directories (database, Temp DB and Backup)
I am part of an Admin group and had access to the these drives prior to the install. After the install completed, I wanted to move a mdf and ldf files to the respective drives to attach the database only to find that I no longer had access to the drives,
the machine was restarted after installing sql server successfully (no error reporting during the install).
This is the first time I have done it like this (separate drives) and after spending hours trying to find a solution figured I would turn here for some guidance.
I guess I have two questions:
Is it normal for the server install to restrict access to the various drives? I appreciate that this is done for security purposes. Should these drives security setting be altered ? If so, how ?
Secondly, if this is how its done, how do I migrate databases from another server ? If I just attach from any folder  on the machine that I do have access to, will the files remain in those folders or will they be moved to the new default location to
leverage the rear/write performance benefits of the separate drives ? Or should I do  some type of a restore ?
    Thank you in advance.
    Andre

  • I can't sync my iPod classic any longer to itunes on my iMac because it tells me I no longer have the priviledge to make changes? does anyone have a solution to this?

I can no longer sync my iPod classic to my itunes on my iMac because I'm told I no longer have the priviledge to make changes? any ideas?

    Hello Zabagon,
I was looking through our resources for information based on what you are describing here. I found an article that may just get you back up and running, called iTunes: Missing folder or incorrect permissions may prevent authorization found here http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1277.
    Symptoms
With Mac OS X, the Shared folder is required to authorize your iTunes Store purchases. With Windows the iTunes folder is also required. If either of these folders are missing or have incorrect folder permissions, you may notice one of the following symptoms:
You are unable to complete a purchase from the iTunes Store.
You are told that you do not have permission to modify your iTunes Media folder when downloading from the iTunes Store.
You cannot play content you purchased from the iTunes Store.
An alert appears with the following text:"There was an error storing your authorization information on this computer. The required directory was not found or has a permission error."
    Resolution
    Collapse All | Expand All
    Mac OS X
Log in to your computer using an administrator account.
In the Finder, choose Go to Folder from the Go menu.
Type: "/Users" (without quotes) and click Go.
    Take care,
    Sterling

  • Built-In Domain Level Groups dont have permissions on domain they should on 2012

    Hello,
First this is a brand new domain environment with everything running server 2012 datacenter edition.
Second I've never seen anything like the following occur in a domain environment. What I had is what appears to be a bad 2012 AD structure however so far all AD tests come back good. The problem is the built-in domain level groups do NOT offer any level
of access that they should. For example if I add a user in the administrators group, they don't have any permissions that group is supposed to have. THe same with every other builtin, backup operators, server operators, account operators and on and on. The
only way a user gets that level of access is if I add them into the domain admins group. As you can imagine this is crazy and not a solution for my help desk crew. (having them all be domain admins that is) So while I could very well use delegation, I need
to find out why my builtin groups don't function as they should.  Anyone have any ideas on what to check or where to look?  I'm at the point of opening a case with Microsoft on this.
    Thanks in advance

Because those builtin groups AREN'T domain level groups in the way you're thinking. The Administrators group on the server gives users administrator permissions on the server, but that doesn't mean permissions on the entire domain.
If you look in the user list in ADUC you'll see that while Domain Admins are a Global security group, Administrators is only a local group, eg local to the server (or more accurately since they no longer have local details, to domain controllers), so doesn't
grant permissions to anything outside of the domain controller. On all non DC's the machines have their own local administrators group which is independent of the domain one, and can have different memberships.
So if you only need a user to have permissions to the DC then administrators is fine, but if you need them to have access to the entire network, eg other servers and workstations, then they need to be members of domain admins. If you only want them
to have limited permissions then you need to grant those permissions either via a global/universal group, or by adding them to the relevant local group on each machine they need access to.
