In correct Usage calculation of "cellular network data" must include wifi?

I just noticed that I have used 1GB in 4 days of usage according to my usage screen on iphone 4, this is obviously incorrect.
So I did a test "reset statistics" and did some wifi data and bam, up went my cell data usage.
Also checked my account online and it said 41Mb in traffic.
Anyone else see the same bug?

Best way to see what cell data usage is to log onto your acct at AT&T website.

One external app on 1st gen iPhone 5.  Cellular Network Data Sent = 1.2GB.  What could cause such a high usage?

I had the same issue, whilst my IPhone 5 iOS 7.0.2  was in my pocket all morning, I checked the usage on traffic monitor and it said data usage 1.1 GB.  My setting are:
    icloud:
    mail:off, contacts:on, calenders:on, reminders:on, Safari:off, Notes:on, passbook:on, photos:off, Documents & Data:on(whatsapp only), Find my Iphone:on
    itunes & apps store:
    music:off, Video:off itunes match:off Automatic downloads music:off, apps:off, books:off, update:off
    Podcasts: Auto downloads:off
itunes wifi sync: last sync Friday 11 Oct 2013 (not this morning)
I am using an inmarsat satelite connection if anybody knows any other settings that could cause vast amounts of data to download please advise. After thought would'nt it be nice if apple had an all in one feature(switch) that only allowed Push notifications and safari usage through. Thanks in advance.

  • What is included in the "Cellular Network Data" Received total?

I just purchased a new IPhone 4 from AT&T and within two days the Usage for Cellular Network Data>Received was 1.7GB.  The "Technical Support" guy at AT&T had absolutely no idea what the number included.  I am on a 2GB plan and was obviously distressed to see it only took two days to get near the total.  I had my WiFi on and thought I was downloading over it, not the cellular network.
The Tech Support guy kept telling me I had only 1.7MB so far to be billed on and wondered (didn't know for sure) if the 1.7GB received included the WiFi data. Am I reading the number wrong?
Help - I don't want any cost overruns!

    What is "Other"
It’s generally a combination of local caches from apps, browsers, mail, Messages, Reading List, saved games, app-specific documents and data, notes, and voice memos.
You can backup and restore to reduce "other" but they will start building up over time.

  • WiFi vs Cellular Network Data

Alrighty, well I just purchased an iPhone 4 and extremely satisfied. I do have one question, however, that I am trying to figure out and can't for the life of me figure out.
I have a minimal data plan and in the hopes of saving that for the road, obviously I had the phone connect to my home network. It connected and shows the name of the network. Then I went and did some basic surfing and checked the USAGE data for Cellular Network Data and saw that it was still going up. After this I went into network settings and literally turned off Cellular Network Data, but upon doing that Google Maps won't load, nor will any data application (i.e. Safari, Mail, etc...)
I am sure it has an active connection to my WiFi network, so I am just not sure where the problem lies.

It's just cellular data. But applications on your phone can use data in background when the phone is asleep, and WiFi is off when the phone is asleep so all background data will go over the cellular network.

I have an iphone 4, need to get to cellular network data, it will only go as far as cellular on the phone, I have straight talk service. Please help! I cannot send or receive pics!

Is there any chance that you must have it in the package of your provider as an option?

  • Is Cellular Network Data Usage persisted to a new phone

I got my original 3GS on release day in 2009 as an upgrade to a 1G. In around September 2009 it developed a problem with the mute switch so I had it replaced at my local Apple Store.
A friend just asked me what my data usage is (as he is looking at his first smart phone contract and doesn't know how much data allowance to include) so I checked my stats on the 3GS.
It says at the bottom Last Reset: Never so my question is, when does Never begin?
My current 3GS was restored from the backup of my original 3GS when it was replaced and I'm nott 100% sure but I think that the original 3GS may have been restored from the 1G.
So, does my usage stat include only the current 3GS or does it include the original 3GS (and possibly 1G if I restored from it)?
    Many thanks!

Texts don't count as part of your data usage. Apps like weather/maps/stocks/etc, email, internet, Youtube, iTunes store all count towards data usage.

    Hello All Who Read This!
I just bought an iPhone 5 on the 21st of March. I ate through 850 MB's in 12 days. I read up on the issue of data consumption looking for tips to conserve data. I did not know there was a problem.
This morning I found out that I was leaking data very little, but daily it accumulates. I am in Barcelona, Spain. I do not have a contract, I am on a prepaid Yoigo carrier.
I happened upon an article/blog by Robert Parks at snnyc.com "problems persist in ios 6.1.2.".
Although his situation did not relate to me, I tried a few tests on my own to see if I could stop the data leak without turning off my celular data and possibly push notifications, I think I found a solution that might help someone:
In ios 6.1.3 goto Settings/Mail, Contacts,Calenders and scroll down to Calendars and turn off " New Invitation Alerts" and also turn off "Shared Calendar Alerts".
My Cellular Network Data seems to be behaving. I only see a change in MB used when I open an ap that uses data.

  • IPhone using cellular network to transmit/receive data even while on Wi-Fi

I have recently noticed a strange problem with my 15 month-old 3GS. Although my phone sits at home most of time time and is constantly connected to my wi-fi network, it is still using the AT&T network to send and receive some data. I can see this by tracking my cellular data usage via the usage page in preferences and via the AT&T app.
If I had an unlimited data plan, this wouldn't be an issue, but a couple of months ago I switched to the 200MB/month plan. If the phone is using the cellular network when it shouldn't be and using up megabytes that should be free under wi-fi, we've got a problem. Last month, I came within 5MB of my limit, in part, I believe, because my phone was not using wi-fi exclusively when connected to a working network (as it was a majority of the time).
This evening, I reset all my usage statistics, and in less than four hours the phone has used 319KB of cellular data, even though it's been on wi-fi the entire time. In the time it took to type this message, it used 22KB of bandwith, not a lot in isolation, but it adds up over the month.
Apple Care said to call AT&T, though I can't see why as it's either a software or hardware problem. They also said that MMS photo messages might account for the discrepancy, but I never send such messages and I've never received one either. AT&T isn't sure what to do, apart from giving me a credit if I do go over my limit.
So, has anyone else noticed this happening? And can anyone offer an explanation or a solution (apart from turning off my cellular data and/or data roaming, which should not be necessary and compromises functionality)?

If that's the problem, then I'll have to turn off the phone completely when I'm not actively using it, which sort of defeats the purpose of having a phone.
If your iPhone is running iOS4.0 or later, you can turn Cellular Data off at Settings > General > Network > Cellular Data which prevents any data access via the cellular network without having to power your iPhone off.
Do you have an email account or accounts set to be automatically checked for new messages?

  • IPv6 Usage on The Verizon Cellular Network

    Hi,
I'm trying to create an application that connects from a host to a mobile Android phone on the Verizon cellular network. This device uses only the 3G network and has its Wi-Fi turned off. The Android device has a listening socket.
As far as I know, Verizon uses NAT traversal for mobile phones and assigns local IP addresses to them on the cellular network.
This prevents me from initiating a connection to the device from a remote host. Please correct me if I'm wrong about that.
With the usage of IPv6 asssignments there shouldn't be any practical limitation (virtually unlimited) to the number of "real" IPs that can be assigned.
My question is, does the Verizon cellular network support IPv6 and assigns IPv6 addresses to capable Android devices?
    Best regards,
    Shahar

From what I remember Verizon 3G network uses IPv4, and Verizon's 4G network is going to be IPv6.
All 4G devices are NAT'd IPv4 address with a public IPv6 capable address.
If you want to test your device to see if it supports IPv6 just go to IPv6.Google.com and see if it loads.  If it does then the network supports IP6, but if it doesn't then it's iIPv4 is what you got.

  • IPHONE 5: can't receive calls & random error messages, such as "could not activate cellular data network" and "no connection - network unavailable, please connect to wifi or cellular network."  This occurs even when signal strength or wifi is operational.

IPHONE 5:  can't receive calls and random error messages, such as "could not activate cellular data network" and "no connection - network unavailable, please connect to wifi or cellular network."  This occurs even when signal strength or wifi is operational, and it does not matter whether wifi is on or off.  ATT went through the standard protocol - resetting network, resetting sim card, etc.  No changes.  Other phones working fine in same region with same carrier.  Apple's solution is to restore software, but haven't gone there yet.  Anyone successfully addressed this/these issues?

I should point out that it worked when the iPhone was set back to factory settings, but when restored with the backup, data/internet no longer works again, and I get the "Could not activate cellular data network" error message yet again.

  • HT4623 Hi. After I updated ios6, I couldn't use my cellular network. It said "could not activate cellular data network - You are not subscribed to a cellular data service". I don't know why. My iphone is 4s

Hi. After I updated ios6, I couldn't use my cellular network. It said "could not activate cellular data network - You are not subscribed to a cellular data service". I don't know why. My iphone is 4s

Contact your carrier to ensure data access via their network is provisioned properly for your account and iPhone with the new iOS 6 update installed.

  • Problems with data using cellular network since upgrading to iOS8

I have an iPhone 5 and recently upgraded to iOS8. Since doing so, I am no longer able to use FaceTime and many other services (eg Snapchat, Apps Store, etc) when relying on the cellular network. I have not changed cellular carriers and it all worked fine with iOS7. What can I do?

    Hi reader1961,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that issues with cellular data on your iPhone can be very frustrating. In this situation there are several troubleshooting steps that I would recommend to help you resolve the issue. Please refer to and use the attached article for troubleshooting steps and guidance.

  • After one month of fine usage, my iPhone cannot connect to or recognize any cellular network.

After one month of using iPhone 4s w/o any problems, it started to go off and on from cellular network. Now it is only "Searching..." for networks unable to connect. When I switch off "automatic carriers" it's the same. I already tried to swith off/on airplane mode and device but w/o success. Help, please...

I too are experiencing the same problem on a 8gig 3G Telstra Australia iPhone that was bought outright. I also have another (same) iPhone and the settings on both are identical yet the new phone refuses to connect. I have tried a few ideas/suggestions including: settings, general, network, cellular data network and changing it from telstra.iph to telstra.internet. this works but I think something is wrong because to .iph refers to iPhone (I have switched it back until to confirm with telstra about this).
I have also tried settings, reset, reset network settings but this did not help but has worked for others.
I have also tried turning off the unit and taking out the sim card and restarting the iPhone but again no luck yet.
I plan to speak to both Telstra and Apple to see if this problem has a simple solution and will post a new thread titled "solution to cellular network problems".
Personally by all the trials and errors so far I believe it is a carrier problem and having to re-enter the pin on this phone everytime I re-boot it suggests it could be sim card related.

  • Data usage of my cellular plan for my i phone 5

I would like to know how i can setup my i phone 5 to display the data usage of my cellular plan.

There are two methods that I know of. 1) Put a reminder on your calendar to repeat each month on the day that your monthly cellular plan ends and then go to Settings > Cellular and scroll to the bottom and "Reset Statistics." If you do that, Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Usage > Current Period will show your data usage in close alignment to your cellular plan. 2) Download an app from your cellular provider if they offer one.
