In Line CASE Statement OR Function

Hi Gurus,
What approach do you typically take in queries where you need to run CASE/DECODE type logic on a query? Obviously for small logic sets DECODE or CASE is fine in the query, but when I have to run a lot of logic for a column output I tend to prefer the FUNCTION. The problem with that approach is the performance. I have read about Function Based Indexes, but they seem to be more for FUNCTIONS that would go against a Single table (i.e. UPPER(CustomerName)).
I would greatly appreciate any info/comments about how to approach this. What I am finding is that in my initial phases of a project my current query(s) are fine, but then as time passes more and more logic needs to be applied and my CASE/DECODES become very hard to maintain.
Thanks,
S

You are correct they are user defined functions. I will take a look at the link you provided....thanks for the info.
Your statement about he data model is what is basiclaly the problem. I have to look at all kind of identifiers, values to determine things like Shipping Rates, Pricing, Qty, etc. What started out as not being that bad has turned into a real headache to try and maintain the logic.
I was trying to implement some user defined FUNCTIONs to break the logic out of the base queries thinking that would help make the code more maintainable, but have started to encounter some performance issues.

  • SQL Expression in decode function or case statement?

    Can I put SQL expressions in decode function or case statement?
    For example,
    select le.profile, decode( select count(1) from profile_data where NAME= 'XXXX_AFTER' and object_id = le.profile, 0, 'N', 'Y')
    from element le;
    or
    select le.profile, case WHEN ( select count(1) from profile_data where NAME= 'XXXX_AFTER' and object_id = le.profile) = 0 THEN 'N'
    ELSE 'Y'
    from element le;
    None of the above work.
    Can anyone tell me how to make it work?
    Is there any workaround?
    Thanks,
    J

    You simply needed and END to your CASE statement;
    SQL> with profile_data as (
       select 'XXXX_AFTER' name, 1 object_id from dual),
         element as (
       select 1 profile from dual union all
       select 2 from dual)
    select le.profile,
       case WHEN ( select count(1) from profile_data where NAME= 'XXXX_AFTER' and object_id = le.profile) = 0
       THEN 'N'
       ELSE 'Y'
       END new_col
    from element le
       PROFILE N
             1 Y
             2 N

  • Using a scalar user defined function in a select case statement

    I have a simple select statement below and I want to have a case statement for some conditions based on the result of the udf returned value. I then want the returned value from that specific case statement to be returned where i have indicated 'DISPLAY
    ZIPCODE' below.
    SELECT
        CASE
             WHEN (SELECT Top 1 ZipCode FROM ufn_GetAddressByBusinessEntityIDandAddressTypeID(table1.BusinessEntityID,712) IS NOT NULL THEN 'DISPLAY ZIPCODE'
             WHEN (SELECT Top 1 ZipCode FROM ufn_GetAddressByBusinessEntityIDandAddressTypeID(table1.BusinessEntityID,714) as r) IS NOT NULL THEN 'DISPLAY ZIPCODE'
             ELSE NULL
           END as Zipcode,
    FROM
    table1

    SELECT COALESCE(ufn_GetAddressByBusinessEntityIDandAddressTypeID(table1.BusinessEntityID,712),ufn_GetAddressByBusinessEntityIDandAddressTypeID(table1.BusinessEntityID,712)) AS Zipcode
      FROM table1
    Nope. This is two function calls. coalesce(a, b, c, ...) is just syntatic sugar for
       CASE WHEN a IS NOT NULL THEN a
            WHEN b IS NOT NULL THEN b
            WHEN c IS NOT NULL THEN c
       END
    But if you use isnull it's a different matter. (But isnull() permits two arguments.)

  • Case statement and Decode function both are not working in Select cursor.

    I have tried both the Case statement and Decode function in Select cursor, but both the things are not working. On the other hand both the things work in just select statement.
    See the first column in select (PAR_FLAG), I need to have this evaluated along with other fields. Can you please suggest some thing to make this work. And also I would like to
    know the reason why decode is not working, I heard some where Case statement do not work with 8i.

    Does this mean you are using 8i? Then scalar sub queries - selects within the select list, are not supported, along with CASE in PL/SQL.

    PeriodYear ----- AnnualAmount ----- Flag ----- Status ----- Account
    2006 ------------------ 43337 --------------- B ----------- O ---------- 300200

  • CASE Statement error in function -- Please help!

    Hi All,
    I created a function in my report.
    It has a SQL query similar to the one below. The query works fine in SQL plus.
    It has a CASE statement. I am getting error at line4 at the select statement. Error is: "Encountered symbol 'SELECT'....."
    Can we use CASE statements like this in reports that use SELECT statements for RETURN EXPRESSIONS. Do we have to do any special?
    Can someone help me out of this trouble?
    THanks in advance.
    SELECT PARENT_id,
         CASE WHEN EXISTS (SELECT PARENT_id FROM CHILD CH1 WHERE CH1.PARENT_id = PARENT.PARENT_id AND UPPER(CH1.description) LIKE '%ABC%') THEN

  • Problem in using aggregate functions inside case statement

    Hi All,
    I am facing problem while using aggregate functions inside case statement.

  • MDX -Children count function Not working in Case statement

    Hi,
    I am trying to create set when you slice with the Hierarchy member is leaf level , I want a output only that Leaf level .
    and When I slice with  the parent level , it has to give all the members below that parent level.
    But the problem here is when I select child member or leaf member , The first condition in the Case is not working
    WITH SET
    TESTSET AS
    CASE
    WHEN
     [Dimension].[Hierarchy].currentmember.children.count<0
    THEN
     [Dimension].[Hierarchy].currentmember
    ELSE
     DESCENDANTS([Dimension].[Hierarchy].Currentmember,,AFTER)
    END
    SELECT
    WBSSET ON 1,
    {} on 0
    FROM
     (SELECT {[Dimension].[Hierarchy].&[10]} ON COLUMNS FROM [CubeName])
    Thanks,
    Santosh

    Hi Santosh,
    I don't think Children count function not working in case statement, I have tested it on my local environment, here s the sample query for you reference.
    with member
    testset as
    case
    when
    [Geography].[Geography].currentmember.children.count<10
    then "X"
    else "OK"
    end
    select testset on 0,
    {[Geography].[Geography].[Country].members} on 1
    from
    [Adventure Works]
    In your scenario, the issue might be caused by the query isself, you can try to use IsLeaf Funcion to achieve your requirement. Please refer to the links below.

  • How to use Substring function with Case statement.

    Hello Everyone,
    I have one requirement where I have to use substring function on the field for report criteria.
    E.G.
    I have Branch Name Field where I have all branch names information, Now some of the branch names are too big with some extension after the name .
    now i want to substing it but the character length varies for each branch.
    so is there any way where we can use case statement where we can define that if branch name character are exceeding some value then substing it with this length.

    Try something like this:
    CASE WHEN LENGTH(tablename.Branch_Name) > n THEN SUBSTRING(...) ELSE tablename.Branch_Name END
    where n is the number of characters you want to start the break.

  • Turn a case statement into a function

    I have a case statement (from an earlier post - thank you) that works. I was wondering if it could be edited and change into a function instead. I think it would be cleaner. The variable is set in the Form Properties (pCounterA).
    switch (pCounterA.value)
        case "1":
        profileA__1image.rawValue = profileA_1image.value.image.value;
        pCounterA.value = "2";
        break;
        case "2":
        profileA__1image.rawValue = profileA_2image.value.image.value;
        pCounterA.value = "3";
        break;
        case "3":
        profileA__1image.rawValue = profileA_3image.value.image.value;
        pCounterA.value = "4";
        break;
        case "4":
        profileA__1image.rawValue = profileA_4image.value.image.value;
        pCounterA.value = "5";
        break;
        case "5":
        profileA__1image.rawValue = profileA_5image.value.image.value;
        pCounterA.value = "1"; // loops back to the first image
        break;

    Hi,
    If you insert a script object by right clicking on the root container (often "form1"). It will appear unnamed in the root / variables in the hierarchy.
    First of all you should name the script object, staying away from reserved names, eg "this". Say "myScripts"
    Script objects can only contain Javascript, so you would need to convert FormCalc scripts (not an issue in your case).
    When you go into the script object, you start off a function with "function" followed by its name and inputs in brackets. The extent of the function is given by curly brackets:
    function changeImage(vCounter)
         switch (vCounter)
             case "1":
             profileA__1image.rawValue = profileA_1image.value.image.value;
             pCounterA.value = "2";
             break;
         } // close switch statement
    } // close function
    Back in the form you can call the function by referencing the name of the script object and the name of the function.
    myScripts.changeImage(pCounterA.value);
    A couple of things to note:
    The input in the script can refer to an objects value or a global variable, but in the function you can assign it s different name. So above the input pCounterA.value is EQUAL to vCounter in the function;
    You can have several inputs in the call for the function separated by commas;
    Don't have the same name for the script object AND the function
    Hope that helps,
    Niall

  • Regarding case statement and decode function

    Hi Experts,
    I have question.....regarding case statement and decode statement....
    Can you please explain me that which one will be efficient,to place in insert statement...
    insert statement(
    (case when ........then
                         case when ....then
                         else
                         end)
      else
    end)
    or
    insert statement(
    case when.....then
    decode(....)
    else
    end)
    Can you people explain me which one is more efficient method?
    Thanks in advance.......

    The are major differences to talk about in case of CASE vs DECODE, but performance wise both are pretty much the same.
    Have a look at Tom's thread
    Ask Tom &amp;quot;better performance - case or decode&amp;quot;
    I would suggest to use CASE whenever possible. Don't worry about the performance part.

  • Question about case statement

    It looks like for the case statement in Linux shell script, it the first condition meet, it won't execute the next anymore, it would exit.
    so, for the code like the following, I wonder if there is anyway to output there lines if the $NUM is 0:
    case $NUM in
         1 | 0) echo "one or zero" ;;
         2 | 0) echo "two or zero" ;;
         3 | 0) echo "three or zero" ;;
         *) echo "INVALID NUMBER!" ;;
    esacexpect output:
    one or zero
    two or zero
    three or zerocurrent output:
    one or zero

    Every case statement must be terminated with ";;"
    http://tldp.org/LDP/Bash-Beginners-Guide/html/sect_07_03.html
    What's wrong with using functions as I outlined earlier? It safes you typing repeated commands, if that is what you are trying to accomplish. Alternatively you could also construct a case statement using an if-then clause. Unfortunately Unix shell does not have a "goto" statement, which would make it sometimes easier to control work-flow.
    For instance:
    $ ./test 1
    0 or 1
    $ ./test 2
    0 or 2
    $ ./test 3
    0 or 3
    $ ./test 0
    0 or 1
    0 or 2
    0 or 3
    $ cat ./test
    NUM=$1
    if [ $NUM = 1 ] || [ $NUM = 0 ]; then
       echo "0 or 1"
    fi
    if [ $NUM = 2 ] || [ $NUM = 0 ]; then
       echo "0 or 2"
    fi
    if [ $NUM = 3 ] || [ $NUM = 0 ]; then
       echo "0 or 3"

    Could someone please explain what am i doing wrong, becouse this code is very similar to code i saw in this document: http://otn.oracle.com/sample_code/products/warehouse/files/case.zip
    Thanks for all the answers.

    I am guessing you are on version 8i. I don't think CASE is supported in PL/SQL until 9i. Perhaps there is an option somewhere to generate if-then statement instead of CASE statement.

    Hi,
    Sorry, I don't know anything about SQL Server.
    I do know you should take baby steps, especially when trying something you're not sure how to do.
    Get rid of all but one CASE expression, until you know how to make that one work.
    When you do get that to work, add one more, as much like the first as possible, to make sure you know how to do two columns in the same query.
    Get asomething working, then try adding a little bit to it. When you do have errors, you'll have a much better idea what caused the errror.
    It's suspicious that you're using aggregate functions in some places, like this
    @v_cur_recoveryrefund = case c.code when '96' then sum(recovery_amount)
              end,but not in the first CASE expressions. You might try <tt>MAX (CASE case c.code when '50' then ... END)</tt>
    I also find it odd that you're using <tt>CASE ... SUM (...)</tt> ; in Oracle, that would be very rare. It implies that the same expression will be in the GROUP BY clause.
    It's more common to have <tt>SUM (CASE ... END)</tt> , like this:
    SUM ( CASE c.code WHEN '96' THEN recovery_amount END )
