The Seagate 3TB external hard drive backs up the entire internal hard drive of the iMac.
Is this external drive a Time Machine backup?
Then find what you want using Time Machine (or whatever application you used to make the backup).
Your iPhoto pictures are in the iPhoto library in Users/Pictures.

  • Importing CD's to external hard drive-can't find folders...

I'm importing CD's to an external hard drive, but I can't find the folders. I've changed the Folder Location to the external drive, and I'm not copying them into the Music Folders. They don't seem to be saved on the external drive, nor are they in the Music Folder in the internal Hard Drive. They're playing OK, even though a few full CD's are not automatically playing unless I find their original location.
Should I load the iTunes.app into the External drive? How can I ensure that the songs are loading on the external drive and not the internal drive? If they are saved on the internal drive, how can I transfer them to the external drive, and have them play regularly? I have this external drive for the exclusive purpose of saving my music, and I'd like to import quite a few more cd's, but I'm waiting to make sure that I'm doing it correctly.
    Thank you, in advance.

I appreciate your help, but I realize that I need to be more specific.
I burned several CD's onto my orginal Mac Hard Drive. Weeks later, I added the external hard drive via a USB port. Then I copied the iTunes Music Folder (the original music files) to the external Hard Drive, and put the original into the Trash. Now when I import new CD's, it saves them to my external drive by default, which I chose through--Change Folder Locations. All of this is fine, it's what I want.
    1) When I choose iTunes, and go to the Library, all the songs are listed, original and new. However, it won't play all of the songs. It asks to find it in the original location, but only a few of the folders are listed, a few of the originals and all of the newly imported CD's.
    2) When I import new CD's, how can I be assured that it's saving them on the external drive only. If the CD takes, let's say 500MB, it doesn't seem to register as taking up 500MB of space on the external drive.
What does consolidating the Library mean?
I know it may sound complicated, but I feel it's an easy problem to alleviate, and I'm missing some simple step.
    Again, thank you in advance.

  • Moved files to external hard drive, can't find my edits in lightroom

    I'm using Lightroom 4 on a Mac.
I recently moved all my pictures onto an external hard drive, and nothing I've read yet has been able to help relocate my edited pictures in Lightroom.
In lightroom, beside the Folder heading I have clicked the + and added my external drive - it shows it's green and live.
All the pictures I originally had saved on my Mac hard drive are now showing on the external drive - good.
In lightroom, the subfolders in my Mac hard drive are now showing with question marks that the files are missing - which they are, because they're now on my external drive.
What my problem is, all the editing I had done on these photos in lightroom before is now gone. How do I get the editing work I had done on these pictures to show up on the external drive pictures? If I look at my pictures on the Mac hard drive, they show they're faded and missing, but it shows all my edits still on the pictures. On the external drive, it shows the original version of the pictures with no editing done.
Note: I backed up my computer before I moved all my pictures, so if I need to put them back on my mac's hard drive I am able to do that.

    Update
I was able to solve my problem. If anyone comes across the issue I was trying to fix, I suggest trying to move the files from WITHIN lightroom.
Originally I had used my OS to move my picture folders onto an external hard drive, by just click and drag. Lightroom was not able to keep the editing I had done on those pictures after they were moved. I restored a backup on my Mac and put the folders back to their original location. Then within the lightroom program, I was able to move the picture folders (with their edits) onto my external hard drive.

  • I have a Seagate 3TB external hard drive and was using it with time machine on my old system with Snow Leopard and it was working smoothly. I have now upgraded to Mavericks and when I tried setting up time machine again, it did not work.

The OS does not detect the drive when I start the system, but Disk Utility shows the disk as an external drive. I seem to be going around in circles. Please take a look at the following screen grabs for the errors I am getting.

But When I verify The sub-partition in the Disk (disk4s2), it asks me to repair disk. When I try to repair disk, it gives me this error.

  • How do I reformat my Seagate Expansion external hard drive so I can use it for Mac

I recently purchased a 3TB Seagate® Expansion® external hard drive for PC. My plan is too reformat it so that I can use it, but it has been acting wierd on me. It says on Disk Utility that it is 4 gbs but I have a 3TB one. Im on OSX mavericks by the way. Thanks!

    akostainsek,
the diskutil output shows that the disk has no Apple-recognized partitioning. Try the following commands in Terminal to establish the partitioning, and to see if it takes effect:
    diskutil eraseDisk JHFS+ Seagate disk1
    diskutil list
Again, please include in your reply the full output from these commands.

  • Transferring Photos to an external hard drive. I Copied all the pictures from a folder in iPhoto and Pasted on the Hard Drive. However, only about 50% were Pasted. It will not let me Copy

I am trying to Transfer my Photos to an External Hard drive as a Back Up. Since I want to be able to Transfer them to a Windows based computer if necassary, I did not use the Automatic Mac Backup program.
To Transfer them. I Copy all the Pictures in a folder in IPhoto, then Paste them in a Folder of the same name, which I have created on the External Hard Drive. It will Paste about 50% of the Photos. Then, when I try to go back and Copy and Paste the rest, it acts like it has already done that. HELP!!!

By default, iPhoto keeps pictures in a special library which isn't user friendly - but is effective for the program. The best way to move pictures from iPhoto is to export them from the iPhoto program.
Start up iPhoto and select all the photos you want to move to your external drive. Go to the File Menu and select Export... For size choose original and then select the external drive as the destination. (It would be good to create a folder for the photos first.)
Since export doesn't create folders and you may want the photos organized, you can select one event or one album at a time and export each separately, putting them into separate folders on the external.

  • Is there a way to access my iTunes Library, which is stored on a (PC) External Hard Drive, on a MacBook Air (through an Apricorn Universal Hard Drive Adapter), without transferring the music files off of the external hard drive?

Is there a way to access my iTunes Library, which is stored on a (PC) External Hard Drive, on a MacBook Air (through an Apricorn Universal Hard Drive Adapter), without transferring the music files off of the external hard drive?
In other words, because the MacBook Air only has 120 gbs of hard drive space & my old hard drive, from a Lenovo, has 500 gbs of hard drive space (and I have over 120 gbs of music), I’m looking to manage my iTunes music from the external hard drive permanently. Upon attempting to access the iTunes library held on the external hard drive the following message comes up: “The iTunes Library.itl file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file”.  Is there a way to get around this?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks so much!

You will have to engage a split library which means you will have to start answering questions on this forum because you will need to learn a lot about how iTunes works in order not that have a big mess at the end of it all.  It also won't be easy when the time comes to relocate it all to different drives.
You can go to advanced preferences and turn off organize media and copy to items to media folder when adding items to library.  Next read about how to selectively consolidate items to the external drive.

"...selected the new tracks directly in iTunes, Control-clicked on the selection, and saw that now you can consolidate selected items." - http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20090919000326840
Remember that when you start iTunes without the external drive turned on iTunes will present you with a bunch of broken links.  If you have automatic downloads enabled with iCloud you may have to turn that off to prevent iTunes from repopulating your drive trying to deal with those "missing" tracks.
If you add tracks in bunches to iTunes and want them to go to different media folders you will need to either add them by holding down the option key while dragging if the desired media folder is not the one set in preferences, or by changing the media folder in preferences.  Changing media folder preferences only applies to new files added, not old ones.
Okay, I am going to stop typing because you might just reply to me, "Oh, okay, forget it," and I don't need the exercise.

I'm trying to transfer my pictures from my iPhoto library to my external hard drive. I dragged the iPhoto Library folder into the drive and after waiting a while it says "Error Code -36 The finder cannot complete the operation because some data in 'iPhoto Library' could not be read or written". I need to free up space asap, what should i do??

Yes, the Old Master file has a folder for each year where I find all photos from that specific year. I am attaching a screen shot of the file.
In the meantime i have managed to download all photos (it did not download any video files though in mpg, avi, 3gp, m4v,mp4 and mov format) to a new iphoto library. Unfortunately the photos are quite mixed and often doubled up. I ma considering to purchase iphoto library which checks all duplicates in iphoto. this will save me a lot of time. What do you think?

  • I have a Seagate 2TB external hard drive partitioned with one partition of Snow Leopard (my computer is running Lion). Can't seem to reboot using the option key. Any ideas as to what's wrong?

I have a Seagate 2TB external hard drive with 3 partitions, one for Snow Leopard - my computer has Lion. I cannot seem to boot from this hard drive but I could yesterday. Any ideas?

Didnt help. The night I asked this question I was able to reboot from the external hard drive after running Disk repair (which said everything was fine). Tonight I have tried again and cannot boot from the external. So I tried the Safe Mode restart and then chose restart with the option key held down as well as shutting down and trying holding down the option key while turning on the power. I have never been able to reboot just choosing restart and holding down the option key. Whenever the reboot from the external has worked I've had to shut down and hold the option key while turning the power on. Now that is not working. My computer is brand new as is the hard drive. I don't know where to go from here.
I can access the drive just fine while I'm in Lion. I just can't boot up using it. Help!

Help needed. I have a 3TB external hard drive partitioned into 1TB's. I used one partition as backup for the main computer hard drive. But now it is greyed out as shown in the disk utility and its name changed, i dont know how that happened, i tried verifying and repairing it but had no luck. I also tried mounting and unmounting it but still no solution. Anyone to help please?

Looks bad. I would strongly advise backing up the stuff on the other two partitions as soon as possible in case the rest of the drive goes wrong.
Beyond that, Disk Utility has limited abilities to repair disks, DiskWarrior uses a different approach and might, emphasis might be more successful. It has certainly done the job for me in the past when Disk Utility could not.

Your problem is not Boot Camp, in fact, is your optical drive. Win XP requires indeed sp2, but also the internal drive, does not work from external optical drive.
For other possible tricks, please use the appropriate Boot Camp forum, not here. Mac OS X may be installed from both external and internal optical drive and/or internal/external partition of a disk, any disk. Windows is not so generous.

  • Files copied (backed up) on an external hard drive can NOT be opened

MacBook Pro (2.5GHz, intel Core i5)
    OS X Yosemite, 10.10.2
I was running low on storage space on my Mac Pro. I copied all items on Desktop to my external hard drive. After all files were copied from MacBook Pro to the external hard drive, "get info" suggested that the amount of space taken entirely was the same between when all items were on the Desktop and when they were on the external hard drive. The number of items copied over were also identical. I should have been more careful, but I then deleted all items from the Desktop. It was until a few days later (today) that I noticed majority of the files copied over onto the external disk can NOT be opened now. The error message was "The alias “<filename>” can’t be opened because the original item can’t be found.".
I really don't want to lose these files, but where are they? They got their file sizes correct but just can not be opened. I tried copying these files back to Desktop on my MacBook Pro, that's not helpful. I tried accessing the files on a PC, still can't open the files. I tried repairing disk of the external hard drive (under Disk Utility), still can't open the files. I tried repairing disk permissions of my MacBook Pro hard drive, still can't open the files.
One last thing I tried in terminal (I am not terminal savvy at all, just googled the "The alias..." error message and copied the instruction):  /usr/bin/SetFile -a a /Volumes/MAC This did not solve the problem, either.
Thank you for your help in advance!

    Hi, eddie from pataskala ohio.
We love pro-active thinking here at the Apple Discussions and you're off to a great start.
Even though upgrading iTunes shouldn't affect your Library, one of the funny things about computers is that sometime, somehow, somewhere when you least expect it , they can do some not so funny things, like losing data that they're not supposed to. Which is why it's a good idea to have a back up copy of any data (such as your music) that you value in reserve ... just in case.
The most straightforward way, is to go to the iTunes Edit menu > Preferences > Advanced tab > General sub-tab and make sure your iTunes Music folder is assigned to its default location: C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\My Documents\My Music\iTunes .
Next make sure all your music is stored in that folder by using the iTunes Advanced menu > Consolidate Library option.
Now you can copy the entire iTunes folder - the iTunes Music folder and the iTunes library files in particular - to your external drive.
If anything does go wrong with the upgrade, you'll be all set to recreate your Library.
