In xmpp-muc room, iChat spams caps-aware clients with disco#info
Situation:
1) i use tkabber xmpp/jabber client, i come into a [email protected], in <presence/> i send client capabilities with node 'caps:node' (content does not matter, i think)
2) in room there is user of iChat
3) iChat sends disco#info iq request, my client responds with <not-allowed/> error
4) goto 3
In xml 3) looks like (where id is of course variable):
<iq from='[email protected]/b'
id='iChat_88904FCF'
type='get'
to='[email protected]/a'>
<query node='caps:node'
xmlns='http://jabber.org/protocol/disco#info'/>
</iq>
<iq id='iChat_88904FCF'
to='[email protected]/b'
type='error'
xml:lang='en-US'>
<query node='caps:node'
xmlns='http://jabber.org/protocol/disco#info'/>
<error type='cancel'
code='405'>
<not-allowed xmlns='urn:ietf:params:xml:ns:xmpp-stanzas'/>
</error>
</iq>
I think that is somewhat beyond me.
The guys an iChat Server may know more about that

I want to use iChat video and file sharing with Windows users
Nowadays, iChat is compatible with AOL/AIM, Google Talk, Jabber, Mac.com and MobileMe instant messaging services. I know that Yahoo Messenger support will be available soon in Mac OS X Lion.
I tried using AOL/AIM and Google Talk natively in iChat in order to talk with Windows users which were using Google Talk application or web chatting (Me from: Google Talk - My friends from: Google Talk, and Me from: AOL/AIM - My friends from: Google Talk), but videoconference and file sharing were not available.
I also tried Windows Live Messenger in iChat via Jabber intermediate, but it is not efficient and doesn't work for videoconference and file sharing.
So, which IM service combination I should use to chat with Windows users in order to be able to use videoconference and file sharing using such a great app like iChat?
Thanks you.Hi,
A lapsed Trial or lapsed Paid for MobileMe account will not work in any fashion, as a Screen Name in iChat/AIM apps or as a Email. (Of course it is no longer an Valid Apple ID either).
Given that Google is a Jabber server iChat will Video (or Audio Only) Chat Jabber to Jabber.
With a Valid AIM name (AIM, MobileMe or @mac.com) then it is supposed to work to AIM on a PC
This tends to vary from person to person as to success.
From AIM version 6.5 AIM introduced a Send as Typing feature called "Real Time"
It does not work to iChat and in fact also has to be turned Off in the Buddy List at the AIM end for Video or Audio chats to work.
The AIM app also has to be allowed through the Windows Firewall as an Exception, preferably with UPnP enabled as well and UPnP enabled in their Router.
Trillian is a paid for App for PCs that provide an alternative.
Recently theri site offered 3 windows versions
The Pro version of verion 3.2 (known to work), a version 4 and a version 5 in beta. The version 3.2 used to have a free Text chat version and only the Pro version was needed to Video.
Until the site was reorganised the 3.2 version was "On Sale" at a reduced price.
It seems version 5 is now out of beta
They are still separating out a Pro version.
It is a multi-service client
There is also a Mac version although I have not tried it.
I am not sure what you mean by "Manage" your MSN Contacts.
How about using a MobileMe expired account screen name for using iChat with Windows-Google Talk users? Should I expect the same incompatibilities?
I have already addressed part of this. The fact the name will not work full stop.
However one way of reading this is that you are thing of linking AIM and Jabber (Google) Buddies in one Buddy List
Directly in iChat this cannot be done - unless you are the one with the Jabber Account and an AIM Transport set up.
You would be subject to the same Text Chat only restrictions.
It is a bit like the fact your phone line can be used for Fax, Telephone and DSL broadband. (in fact mine does TV as well)
You granny would not be able to talk to your Fax machine if that happened to answer the call.
Her Fax machine might be able to communicate with your computer if you had an active Fax app on there, and a dail-up modem active to answer.

Does Ichat screen sharing work properly with Lion OSX?
Hello, I am planning to install the new OS Lion soon. However, I was wondering if the Ichat screen sharing works properly with Lion. I use the screen sharing quite a lot to communicate with my co-workers, so it's a deal breaker if the app crashes when using the screen sharing option. Thank you!
Hi,
I have not seen a post where it has been reported to be a problem.

IChat can't video chat with AIM user
My mother in law has switched from PC to iMac, and wants to video chat with her grandchildren. They are on a PC, and have installed AIM 5.9. Can IM fine, but as soon as we try to hook up a video chat, it fails to connect, saying:
There was a communication error during your chat. iChat encountered errors while communicating with participants in this chat. You can send details etc etc...
Firewall is off in OSX
Any ideas?Hi
See for mac and pc setup http://www.mvldesign.com/videoconferencetutorial.html
If your tring to video with PC then you might be better off using Skype to do video between Mac and PC.

Can ichat on old system work with facetime on new system?
Can ichat on older macbook communicate with facetime on new macbook pro?
While we all have MacBooks in this forum not all of us use FaceTime. There's a FaceTime Support Community where everybody uses FaceTime. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer. https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_app_store/facetime_for_mac

VRF-Aware IPsec with a Dynamic VTI
Hello
I am trying to configure VRF-aware IPSEC with e Dynamic VTI. I follow the guidelines from the document
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/ios-xml/ios/sec_conn_vpnips/configuration/15-2mt/sec-ipsec-virt-tunnl.html#GUID-C0A165BF-5866-4B13-BD73-0892B7E65488
Acording to the example: "VRF-Aware IPsec with a Dynamic VTI When VRF is Configured Under an ISAKMP Profile" I should be able to configure both the vrf and virtual-template features under the same crypto isakmp policy.
Unfortunalety, if I try to do that, I receive the following message
R4(conf-isa-prof)#virtual-template 1
% VRF already set for isakmp profile. Virtual Template not allowed
Does anyody know why I am not able to follow the configuration from this example?
My profile confguration, and the virtual-template configuration are as follows
crypto isakmp profile A
vrf A
keyring A
match identity address 192.168.0.2 255.255.255.255
interface Virtual-Template1 type tunnel
ip unnumbered Loopback2
tunnel mode ipsec ipv4
tunnel protection ipsec profile A
I am doing the test on the IOS 12.4(11)XW3 runningon 3725 router.
Thank you in advance for any hints.
Regards
LukasLukas,
I'm not sure but most likely this was not yet supported in 12.4.
The document you refer to is for IOS 15.2. I don't know by heart if your 3715 can run 15.2, otherwise give 15.1(4)Mx a try ?

Thanks Topher!Hi TophDawg,
iChat 2 used to do something similar.
Try this.
Shut down the computer. (If Wireless, disable the Airport card first)
Disconnect from the modem if wired.
Restart the computer
Restart iChat.
Plug in the internet or activate the wireless card.
Log on to AIM
This seems to clear iChat of "holding" on to any ports or connections due to a failed chat.

Ichat 5.0.3 compatibility with 4.0.9
Hi,
This has likely been answered by other posts but could not find an adequate answer to my inquiry;
The problem I have is I am running OS X 10.6.6 (Snow Leopard) with iChat 5.0.3 and my video conferencing with others that have software versions of OS X 10.5.8 (Leopard) with iChat 4.0.9 does not work. Text chatting works fine but audio and/or video chatting does not work; upon initiating the A/V chats it appears to be working but once accepted, initiating from either side yields same result, the session returns an error message prompting to send/decline report to Apple.
I was hoping there is a simple fix, such as an update for ichat only, and not an entire OS update......
Thanks folks!Hi,
Welcome to the Discussions
I have two computers. One that Runs 10.6.6 as of today and one that runs 10.5.8
I have a Buddy I video chat to fairly regularly who had a G5 and updated to an Intel during the life of 10.6
Using an AIM name to an AIM Name, Jabber to Jabber or even Bonjour Chats seems to show me no differences in the Chats I used to get at Snow Leopards release.
The iChat 4.0.9 on the 10.5.8 G4/1Ghz Dual Processor has always been of slightly lower Quality than the Pic coming form the MacBook pro running ichat 5.0.3 and Snow Leopard.
I have noticed a drop in iChat 4.0.9 to my friend's new Intel.
I get breaks in the Audio feed and some occasional pic issues.
What does improve things is if Both ends set the Bandwidth in iChat (iChat Menu > Preferences > Video/Audio Section > Bandwidth Limit drop down) to 500kbps
Historically iChat 2, 3 and 4 needs to have System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming tab set to the 1.5Mbps
In the first two version the Automatic Quicktime setting was read a 0kbps
The highest setting of "LAN/Intranet" is also not read correctly in iChat 2 and 3
In iChat 4 the Automatic setting is read s 384kbps
Therefore setting the 1.5Mbps figure allows iChat to "See" as much of any Internet Connection speed as is feasible.
It also meant that literally globally must people were inside a relatively narrow window on Internet Speeds that iChats Buffering (Smooths out fluctuations) could cope with.
iChat 5 is not "Capped" by any Quicktime Streaming setting (It does not exist)
You could be on a really fast service of several 10s of Mbps and bee much faster than your Buddy.
For Video Pics and Audio this can be a problems if the Buffering cannot keep up. (Voice and Picture breakup)
At the Connection point, prior to that your faster internet and faster Processor may interpret the slower response from the other end as being no response at all.
I find this particularly true if my G$ is doing it's Time Machine Backup as it seems to tie up my Processor/Screen so I cannot Click the Accept button Fast enough (I also run Little Snitch which adds s few "Accept" clicks on the way)
So...
The iChat 4 Buddy needs to set the System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming speed to Get he most out of their Connection.
Then it pays that both ends Cap the Bandwidth in iChat to the same Speed.
We suggest the 500kbps as this is fast enough to Host 4 Way Video Chats.
This also gets around some ISPs management of Peer-to-Peer File Sharing when they low down a Network.
It also gets around large fluctuations in your Internet speed.
5% of a potential 1.5Mbps is nowhere near 5% of a 25Mbps service (realistically some variations can exceed the Upload speed at either end let alone the iChat 4 Buddy)
Method.
Set the settings to 500kbps before a Chat.
Go to the Video Menu and open the Connection Doctor (Set to Stats if it is not already)
Start the Chat.
Audio Only chats do show some dynamic qualities, varying on who is talking.
About 50kbps is normal at the talking end and about 25kbps for the non speaker.
Video Chats will show mostly stable speeds based on the Bandwidth Limit you have selected. 350kbps would be about "normal" for a 500kbps cap.
Once the Bit Rate looks fairly Stable then increase the setting at one end.
Th iChat Buffering will smooth this change out over time and you will see the Bit rate increase (Providing your Upload speed is faster to accommodate this).
Once "Stable" again then increase the setting at the other end.
Repeat to until you find the highest successful speed setting. (Some experimentation may be needed to work out a settings that works for as many as possible).
NOTES:-
The Bandwidth Setting can be changed during a "Live Chat"
If a ichat 4 Buddy has to Change the Quicktime Streaming setting iChat will need a Restart at that end to "See" the new Speed.

Do I need the Internet for iChat? Will it work with just an Ethernet LAN?
is it possible to run iChat between two computers without using Internet? rather simply over ethernet?
for example I have my webcam in one room and I am able to see it on another mac in another room, simply by an ethernet connection?
thanksUse Bonjour on your home LAN.
Go to iChats prefs/accounts and enable Bonjour on all Mac's. -
I currently have a MacBook Pro, iPhone and iPad with working iMesagge, all these i use to chat with my iMessage contacts without conflicts, recently I've been assigned a MacBook in my job which can't be upgraded to Mountail Lion and currently has iChat 6 installed.
When i log in using iChat, it doesn't list any of my contacts. Adding them manually gets them in the buddy list but still doesn't allow to send them messages since they all appear offline.
I already signed in with my Apple ID in the MacBook, the same one I use with all my working devices mentioned above. There is only one user account in the MacBook which i have created since this computer has been assigned to me only.
Any ideas?Hi,
Messages is iChat+
The Plus bit being the Apple iMessages service.
Apart from the iMessages service both apps can join:
AIM (with AIM registered or AIM Valid Screen Names ending in @mac.com @me.com and @icloud.com from Apple)
Jabber (with names registered at Jabber servers. Two exceptions are GoogleTalk IDs and Facebook IDs)
iChat 6 and Messages can also Join Yahoo. Must be a registered Yahoo Name and not one of the ones that can be used with the Yahoo App itself.
All these chats will be AIM to AIM, Jabber to Jabber or Yahoo to Yahoo.
The confusing can be that each can use email looking names and IDs.
Jabber Names (with the exception of Google) are in the form of [email protected]
AIM registered names don't normally have any @AOL/AIM.com suffix but @ is an allowed character and as mentioned @mac.com, @me.com and @icloud.com names are also Valid.
Yahoo are also email looking names in the form [email protected]
This does tend to mean it is easy to add an email to any Buddy list and it is initially accepted as it conform the the format.
Mostly they will appear Off line in an AIM list and Awaiting Authorisation in a Jabber list.
iChat as such will not chat to your iMessages Contacts.
It is an extra service that the Message App can join in addition to AIM, Jabber or Yahoo.

Hey Guys!
I just got my AirPort Extreme Base, but I can't use my HP Deskjet F4580 wireless printer with it.
The printer is not connected to the AirPort Extreme's USB port. It is placed in another room, and I'd like to use it (the printer) wirelessly (not connected to the USB port os the AirPort Extreme), as I used to. There is no place for the printer close the AirPort Extreme. It worked just fine with my previous wireless router (Linksys WRT54G). I'm very disappointed with the AirPort Extreme Base Station because of that!...
Can you help me? Please?!
Thanks Folks!This must be a tough one, no suggestions at all.

Good Day,
Hopefully someone here has the know why on this one.
I have setup the Room Mailbox as per several online tutorials. From my Outlook 2013 I can access the room and its calendar.
But when I create a new meeting request, I add myself as an Attendee for testing purposes. When I select the room from the rooms button. It adds the room mailbox [email protected] to the attendee list.
When I click send, the alias address returns as below:

In the Exchange EMC I have setup the everything as per the following link:
http://exchangeserverpro.com/exchange-server-2010-room-mailboxes-step-by-step-guide/
I have also use created a room list and added the rooms to it. They show upo in my outlook.
I have rebooted the server and tried various permissions and option settings in Outlook with no luck. I even tried enabling the user account in AD. Nothing works and the email always comes back undeliverable.
One post I read suggested that In the Resource General tab that Enable the Resource booking attendant be ticked. Either way it doesn't get right of the problem.
Chad the DadOk I see from the output below there were two problems fixed the first one, but I can't figure out how to correct this one:
The forwardingAddress is wrong. But I also do not know what it should be

My MacBook Pro keyboard won't type an upper case 'C' using the shift key... only with caps lock. Workaround has been to use Typinator by typing a double lower case c, not always the best solution. Mac is a refurbished model, which initially was fine. Apple tech helped me correct the quirk when it first appeared, but now it has returned and refuses fixes. Any ideas?
I'm willing to bet that this has something to do with iCloud. I've been facing a frozen computer nearly every time I go into it.
In Activity Monitor I have seen two programs associate with iCloud that take up about 2.5 GB of memory (I only have 4 in the computer) -- causing everything to freeze. One of these is called "iCloud Helper" and the other one is something like "Address Book Sync helper" -- I see parts of these names in the stuff you have posted.
I am at my wits' end with these and have written to Apple asking them to do away with these or fix them. To get rid of the Address book sync thing I have gone into system preferences for iCloud and unchecked Contacts -- but then spontaneously it gets rechecked. And oftentimes after I Force Quit the iCloud helper, it spontaneously turns on again. My conclusion --- the iCloud is basically unusable. It turns a Mac into the most useless, clogged, sluggish PC. If this is happening to a lot of people's computers -- and I see no reason why yours or mine should be an exception -- these programs just might destroy Apple itself.
So -- I'm about to completely give up on iCloud, and I suspect that others will too unless this gets fixed.
Cheers,

IChat video not in sync with audio
Hi Everyone,
For the past six months I have been trying to resolve issues with the video chat. It all started with me updating my brother-in-law's iMac G5 from Tiger to Leopard. Before the update we were able to video chat with no problems. Since the update the video has been out of sync with the audio. We tried all the remedies that have been posted (setting Quicktime Streaming to 1.5Mbps, limiting iChat bandwith to 500kbps, deleting the plist files in the preference folder) with no luck.
In the interim we have been using Skype to do our video chats, and that has been working just fine. However it has been bugging me that we can use iChat. We were hoping that the recent updates from Apple (10.5.5 and the Quicktime patch update) would have fixed the issue.
Now with all the updates we are partially fixed. The video feed that I get now is fine and looks like it is in sync with the audio. However, my brother-in-law sees me out of sync with the audio (the video is at least 10 sec behind the audio, and gets worse the longer we are connected)
We have tried all that we could think of including using the MobleMe and the .Mac accounts to log in but so far no luck. I'm wondering at this point if it is his modem (about 3 year old) that is causing him to get a delay? We tried connecting the modem directly to the iMac without the router, but it made no difference for the video sync issue.
The other issue we have been dealing with is his Linksys router (don't remember the model but, it's the one without the wireless capability) causing screen sharing not to work. He has tried disabling the firewall on the router but that has not worked. It will only work if we pull the router off and connect directly
Any help is appreciated, thanks in advanceSome modem features such as a SPI filter which checks the Incoming data stream for any app has the potential to get in the way.
It is not uncommon for the amount of data to arrive faster than the SPI part can deal with it.
If his router has an SPI filter/firewall then he should turn it off.
It may pay to Power down all items such as the routers and computer and potentially the modem and restart them all.
Also try Restarting his Mac with holding down AppleALT+PR until he hears three Start Up Bongs.
If this does not work get him to access the Linksys and on the front "Set Up" screen he will have an MTU settings. Get his to set this at 1492 (the default is 1500 and should be reduced by 8 each time if changed - it changes the packet size and may help).

A quick and easy question about my NEW Ipod Touch.
Okay, I broke down and replaced my old ipod. This new one came with earphones, a cord to connect it to my computer and a little plastic piece that obviously fits on one end of the ipod. Here's my question: WHAT IS IT FOR? Thanks in advance! Annie
