IncludeText in a Mac Word file linking to SharePoint

Hello,
I've looked around the web and the forums and I have found little information on this subject, so here goes...
I have a Word document that has several INCLUDETEXT fields that point to source documents located in a SharePoint Online Library (Office 365 Enterprise). I built the target document in Word 2013; all of the source documents are based on this target document
template.
In my own Windows world (Office 2013 or 2010, Windows 7), I am able to make the various INCLUDETEXT fields update as I want and expect that they would. When I test the target document on a neighboring Windows world (Word 2013/Windows 8), the fields work
as anticipated and expected.
The problem arises when I move to an Apple machine and try to make the fields work in the Apple orchard. When I open the file from SharePoint into MacWord 2011, everything looks fine.  But if I go to update a field manually, I first get a pop-up window
error message that says "Not a valid address" and then the target document field I was attempting to update displays "Error! Not a valid filename". This is the same on two separate machines, two separate users. Permissions for both users
look fine, one of the users has identical permissions as myself (full control).
Currently this is what my code looks like:
{ INCLUDETEXT  "https://*domain*.sharepoint.com/sites/**********tech/shared%20Documents/Templates/0.0_CoverPage.docx?Web=1" \*MERGEFORMAT}
Is my address too long (I removed our domain which is 19 characters plus an additional 10 before "tech" for a total of 29 characters missing from the URL above)? Is there another way to accomplish this task?
Any help is appreciated!
Brian

More information from my reply to a couple of responses over at the Office for Mac Forum (posting title 'INCLUDETEXT and SharePoint'). Including them here in case someone here can point me in a direction with more information...
"...this seems like an issue with Word for Mac versus SharePoint (the file tests okay under every scenario tried with Word 2013 and SharePoint) I figured I would ask the crowd here as well.
Phillip, I took a look at all of my paths and it doesn't look like I have forbidden characters there (SharePoint also doesn't like those characters since it makes the file name a part of the URL). Where I can I try to replace spaces with underscores, again
a SharePoint thing because of the URL's. I also thought for an optimistic hot second that maybe the file name "0.0_CoverPage.docx" may work better as "00_CoverPage.docx" (losing the period), but that of course had no effect.
I've tested this in Word 2010 since it is to my understanding closer to the build of Word for Mac 2011, and it goes through the same process of signing in and downloading as Word for Mac does. Except that 2010 is actually successful at completing.  :-(
Has anyone ever tried to link to SharePoint through Word for Mac? Am i the only one crazy enough to do this?"

  • Saving a Mac Word file by printing to PDF not possible anymore

I have a  old version of Office v.X for Mac that will no longer allow me to save files by printing them as  save to PDF. I think the problem occured when I switched to Mac OS X 10.6.8. Does anyone know what the problem maybe and how I can fix it?

Try opening up Font Book from the Applications folder. From there highlight all the fonts and try to validate them. Remove any duplicates as well.

  • Hyphens appearing at odd places from a Word file linked or pasted into Indesign

    Hi,
I have hyphens appearing in the middle of words which are in the middle of a column in Indesign so they're not even in the correct place. The text fle is from Word. My paragraph styles have hyphenation turned off as I don't want any word breaks.
I'd really appreciate it if someone could tell me how it's happened/how to revent it from happening in the future. Thanks
Here's an example. The whole Document is riddled with it.

Turn of hyphenation in Word, delete all hyphens in Word and never use a normal dash for hyphenation, neither in Word nor in InDesign nor in any other program.
Existing hyphen and dashes delete with find & replace, step by step for each of them. (not all are unwanted.)

  • Linking to a MS word file in Safari does not open the file

I access a web site that has hyperlinks to MS Word files. When I click on the link the following happens.
    1. I get a new empty window
    2. I get the download window showing the file
But the file does not load in Word.
I have to manually click on the file to load it into word.
When I access the same page with Firefox, and click on the hyperlink the Word file loads into Word with no action required by me.
Is this they way Safari works or is there some preference I can set to make it load the file into Word?
Safari does open pdf files fine.

    1. I get a new empty window
    2. I get the download window showing the file
This is normal for a site that has the Word files links set up to open in a new page. (Which is almost necessary in Windows IE, since IE will open the Word doc in the same browser window otherwise, losing all web site navigation.) But Safari doesn't open Word files directly, so you get that blank new window while the file downloads in the background.
But the file does not load in Word.
What do you have in Safari > Preferences, in the General section, for "Open safe files after downloading"? If you have that box checked, files that the Mac OS considers "safe" (JPEGs, PDF files, etc.) will open automatically in the default program for that type of file. The only question is whether Word documents are considered safe. They might not be, since they can carry macro viruses. Checking now...
I tested that, and it seems that Word files are not considered "safe" files and will not open automatically with that setting checked. The alternative: when the downloads window opens, it shows the file you just downloaded. You can double-click on the Word file's icon to open it in Word, without navigating to the downloaded file on your hard drive to open it.

  • InDesign CS6 Linked Word file issue

Hi, I have a number of 100+ page InDesign files which have a large (linked) Word file that threads though multiple text boxes throughout all of the document pages.
The files need to be shared amongst multiple computers within our studio. This setup was used with InDesign CS5.5 last year and worked fine, it was still working fine with CS5.5 this year but we needed to upgrade to CS6.
We have the trial version of CS6 installed throughout the studio now however we have been having big problems just opening the InDesign files up in CS6. They predominantly seemed to only open up 95% of the way and then hang (spinning wheel) and when (on occasion) we did get 1 open, it was clearly struggling and normally crashed. Can't get most open at all any more.
I have tried opening files on different computers (Mac & PC), tried changing format of linked Word file, the only thing that seemed to ever work was breaking the link to the Word file
(from within CS6) and then saving without Word file linked. This is not ideal for our workflow but even if we wanted to do this to all files, I am unable to even get in to some of them to unlink them now (as they are now all saved as CS6 files which won't open). Moving Word doc from location (so that InDesign can't pick it up) also doesn't work.
I have tried deleting InDesign preferences & all recovery files several times, still no joy. It may be related to being on the trial version (seeing as 5.5 still seems fine) but I am hesitant to upgrade everything if it is not going to work. Does anyone have any ideas??

Thanks Peter (and Bob), thought last solution was going to be a winner but still hangs at same point (on several files) unfortunately.
Strangely, an older version of one of the files (a CS6 one that is linked to the same Word file) just opened, which suggests to me that the issue may not actually be wholly to do with it linking to the Word file.
We just setup a brand new PC with just CS6 trial & Office on it, copied InDesign files to desktop, turned off the auto link boxes in preferences and still no luck. Getting close to giving up stage I think, just can't figure out the cause.

  • Word 2007 file not displaying from CHM file link

Hello all!  I took the time to search around the forum before posting this, so I hope I didn't miss the answer somewhere.
I'm using RH 8, working on a Policy and Procedure manual, resulting in a CHM file.  I've worked in earlier versions of RH with the same issues as everyone else (network deployment is a no-no, etc.), but this is the first time that I've had an issue with a linked-to Word file (linked as a "Link To File" link from within the project).
When navigating through the CHM file on a local drive, and upon clicking on a link to a Word file, I get this warning dialog box:
If you were to click "Open", you get a few-second delay (as if Word were opening), but then nothing happens.  The Word file does not open.  I believe the issue is with Office 2007.  I tested this exact same CHM file on a PC running an older version of Office, and the Word file opens without issue.
Has anyone seen this type of behavior?  Is there a RH 8-based solution?
Thanks for any help you can give!
    Bob

Try Word Repair Toolbox, it's open source and may get your info back
    http://www.word.repairtoolbox.com/
As free method to get your word documents back:
Word may have automatically saved your file. When you start Word the next time, if any AutoRecover files were found, results will be displayed in the Document Recovery pane. Auto recovery option for word 2007 are below:
1 Click the Microsoft Office Button, and then click Word Options.
2 In the Navigation Pane, click Save.
3 In the AutoRecover file location box, note the path, and then click Cancel.
    4 Close Word.
5 Open the folder that you noted in step 3.
6 Look for files whose names end in .asd (AutoRecover files).
7 If you find the Word document that you are looking for, double-click it to open it.
    8 Save it immediately.

  • Word document links won't open in IE 9

I got a user who cannot open up a word document link in sharepoint online that should display a word  dialog box basically in IE 9. When clicking, nothing happens even if pop up blocker is off, but he can access the word documents from the link in Firefox.
I also found out that I am able to open it up under my windows profile on that machine so it must be a corrupted windows profile.
    I reset IE
    Cleared cache
Verified in registry in class roots that .html is set to htmlfile
Anything I can do besides redoing the user's windows profile?

Can you try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away? You can restart in Firefox Safe Mode by either:
    * Clicking the menu button [[Image:New Fx Menu]], click Help [[Image:Help-29]] and selecting ''Restart with Add-ons Disabled'', or;
    * Holding the '''option''' key while starting Firefox.
If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode your problem is probably caused by an extension, theme, or hardware acceleration.
Let us know how you get on.

  • Will ID files linked to Word docs still print correctly if I delete the docs?

Sometimes InDesign won't let me Unlink a Word file (after I've edited it?). Can I solve the problem by simply deleting the original Word file?
I know the Word file will still show up with a question mark beside it in the Links Panel, but will that affect my InDesign document?

Also, If this music is on my Apple ID and my computer, should I have to worry about them seeing my music? I'm probably just being stupid, but I have some music I would rather hate to admit that I have.
And if they have a mac, shouldn't everything already be synced to their computer? It would seem like that to me, but I've never owned one..

Generally when creating a Word file from either a Mac or Win7 pc and opening it on two different machines (either one first) it always prompts that the file is open and will be opened as read only.
However opening a CSS file does not prompt that it is already open on or from any machine which is causing code edits to be lost.
What we found from out testing:
    - The file can be saved from one user to the server and WILL NOT PROMPT on other machines until the saving machine has the Dreamweaver program closed completely
    - The file can be closed and  Dreamweaver minimised to the launch bar but it still will not register on other machines that it has been changed.
    - Also, until the  Dreamweaver program is closed on the machines, it will continue to open it's saved version of the file.
    Example Scenario:
    - User 1 opens test.css (which is 2000 lines) and adds some code to the end of the file to bring it up to 2500 lines
    - Meanwhile User 2 opens test.css as well (opens as 2000 lines as User 1’s edits have not yet been saved) and adds in code to bring it to 2300 lines
    - User 1 saves his file and closes it - but  Dreamweaver is still open.
    - User 2 also saves his file and leaves  Dreamweaver  open.
    - The server will report the size and last edit of the file the same as User 2 as he was the last person to save it (and if you open from the Win7 Machine it will show as User 2’s 2300 line version)
    - If User 1 then open's the file again (from either the 'recent' in Dreamweaver OR clicking on the file directly in Finder...which version opens.... The version that User 1 saved! Not the true version on the server, but the version that User 1 edited and saved with 2500 lines in it.
    - Same for User 2, he will open 'his' version with 2300 lines in.
    Other information:
    - Files are opened directly from the server
    - Sometimes the users will save incrementally and re-open
    - Most of the time users will save incrementally and keep the files open
    - The users will never not save incrementally and just save when closing the file once finished
    - The users are usually working on the files all day
    - It is always the bottom lines of code that are lost. It could be a case of the two versions being mixed up and cutting off the newly added lines based on the line count (possibly).
It is as if Dreamweaver is holding a cache of the version locally and then only properly looking back to the server when it has been completely closed. It is very difficult to see how the server is causing such an impact on these files, there are very few logs which are giving any indication to the root cause of the problems.
Anyone know if this is a known issue?
Is there a way that there can be a featured implemented on the server that doesn't allow another user to open a file if it is already open on another machine?
    Thanks

Your server file handling has nothing, and really nothing to do with Adobe software. If files don't get locked for (over-)writing and/or lose connection to the program opening them, then your server is misconfigured. It's as plain and simple and that. Anything from "known file types"/ file associations not being set correctly, MIME types being botched, crooked user privileges and file permissions, missing Mac server extensions, delayed file writing on the server, generic network timeout issues and what have you. Either way, you have written a longwinded post with no real value since you haven't bothered to provide any proper technical info, most notably about the alleged server. Either way, the only way you can "fix" it is by straightening out your server and network configuration, not some magic switch in Adobe's software.

  • How to keep links in a pdf converting from MAc word

    Hey.
I need to create a pdf with a document created in MAC word - and keep the links.  This doesn't seem to be working.
    Help??

That makes sense. So I guess it looks like I have 2 options.
    1. Put the JS short code in and have it open the link in a new window if the user opens it in adobe. If a google chrome user opens it in the default viewer, they wont be able to use the link at all.
    2. Leave the link how it is, and it will be usable in both viewers, but will not open it in a new window.
I am sureprised that opening the link in a new window isn't just an option in Acrobat Pro. I wouldn't think you'd have to make a workaround like this.
Is there an alternative way to have a page link on the form so that people can go to another .pdf whil keeping the main one open?

  • Using Acrobat XI MAC, unable to create Word file from PDF. Tried a simple PDF as well as a complex file. Neither can be created.

Using Acrobat XI mac. Why can I not create a Word file from a PDF?  Tried some remedies offered online, i.e. convert to PDF X4:2008 then try to convert to the Word file. No go. Advise.

    Hello,
I have tried 3 PDFs: one with only text -  created in Illustrator(CS5)  and saved as a PDF default, and the second which was a complex form of text and scanned images created in QuarkXpress and saved as a PDF for print purposes. The third file was a simple PDF offered online to solve problem.
Each attempt was to create a Word file. Each received the same error message: Save as failed to process this document. No file was created.
    Thank you in advance.

  • I have transferred Word files from my PC to my new Mac Book Pro and some of the files cannot be clicked on and opened or even deleted because you can't select them. There are a variety of document files and pdfs etc. Any ideas ?

I have transferred word files form my PC to my new Mac Book Pro. Some of the word files are feint and will not open as you cant select them. Also you cant delete them either because the cursor wont highlight or select them. Any ideas anyone?

Have you tried looking at the file in list view in the Finder and seeing if they actually occupy any space? i.e. "Size"? There shouldn't be any problem with Office documents, Adobe pdfs, etc. If they migrated properly - did you use Migration Assistant or some similar utility?

  • InDesign CC slows down significantly upon placing a Microsoft Word for Mac 2011 file

I'm running the latest Mavericks OS on a brand new iMac 27" 3.5 GHz Intel Core i7 computer with 32 GB RAM. The slowdown occurs even if ID is the only app running.
The Word files consist mainly of text which are typically book maunscripts. It doesn't seem to matter whether the files are large or small. They all cause ID to slow down. We want to import the Word files so as to preserve mainly any italics.
Once the ID document contains a placed MS Word file, the slows are apparent mainly in:
Selecting a text box: 20-30 sec lag waiting for the beachball until it selects
Clicking to place the insertion mark: an additional 20-30 sec
Placing an image file: 20-30 sec for the import dialog to appear, 20-30 sec after the open button is clicked for the selected image to appear on the page
We've tried uninstalling ID CC via the script in the app folder.
We've also completely uninstalled MS Word follow MS's instructions, and reinstalling Word.
We've cleaned up our fonts with Extensis' Font Doctor.
We've deleted fonts we don't use.
One of the main reasons for buying the new iMac was to hopefully benefit from the enhanced processing power, additional RAM, and clean installs of the software.
    What else can we try?
Page layout for books using ID CC with Word is the bulk of our work and we need to resolve this matter ASAP.

Thanks for the info, Bob. We've been Adobe pro customers since '87 and have been through a number of such hardware/software "leapfrogs." We basically love the CC products and the new Macs and Mavericks, so we're looking forward to the updates.

  • Linking Word files to a pdf

I have created a form with editable fields, but the client has requested that I link 2 Word files to the document. I have done that and they open properly for me, but when the client tries to open the file on their computers the links cannot be found. They are obviously not embedded. Do I need to provide the Word files that then need to be sent with the PDF? That defeats the purpose.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Right now they are just on my computer, but this form will be sent out
to a wide range of people who will not have access to a central
location. I suppose we could make the link go to a website, but we
    were trying to avoid that.
