Incompatible SQL backup on SQL Server 2008 R2

I installed SQL Server 2008 R2 from MSDN download for testing on a development server. I copied a backup from a live SQL Server 2008 R2 server and when I tried to restore the database on the MSDN downloaded copy of SQL the following error was generated...
"The database was backed up on server version 10.50.4033. That version is incompatible with this server, which is running version 10.00.2531....."
Any suggestions on a solution?

NO possibilities of backing up from higher to lower version.
only lower to higher is possible.
you can do this
upgrade this instance to SQL Server 2008 R2 or
restore the backup you have on a SQL Server 2008 R2 instance, export all the data and import it on a SQL Server 2008 database.

  • Backup Restore With SQL Server 2008 R2 although it succeeded with SQL Server 2008

    Dears;
I have a Full backup of some DB of around 417 GB within SQL Server 2008 R2 , and when I tried to restore it , i get  stuck several times with the error below :
    Restore failed for Server   (Microsoft.SqlServer.SmoExtended)
A system assertion check has failed. Check the SQL Server error log for details. Typically, an assertion failure is caused by a software bug or data corruption. To check for database corruption, consider
running DBCC CHECKDB. If you agreed to send dumps to Microsoft during setup, a mini dump will be sent to Microsoft. An update might be available from Microsoft in the latest Service Pack or in a QFE from Technical
    Although I have restored
successfully other several Full+ Deferential backups for the same DB while it was in SQL Server 2008 not 2008 R2.
And so I have rounded all different possible assumptions for such common know error by Microsoft for SQL Server 2000, 2005, 2008 but
    no way as next:
    1-
I have attempted to restore it within 2 environments clustered and non-clustered of SQL Server 2008 R2.
    2-
I have attempted to restore verify it and it was so fine .
    3-
I have attempted to restore it using Continue_after_error ,no_checksum but no way.
    4-
I have attempted to move Backup file to another Storage but no way.
    5-
I have scheduled jobs to DBCC
Checkdb the live DB and it wasn’t any errors since long time right now
    6-
I have also DBCC check all master +msdb+model+Tempdb ,and they are so fine
    7-
I have also checked all I/O subsystem of SAN and Network controllers , but they are fine evidenced much more by my trial on 2 different environments.
    8-
I have also checked Memory and it is so fine all the time since I have 128 GB memory and I control it also so well.
    For DB Design +Structure :
It has 20 Files containing tables partitioned horizontal +Vertically
(Schema Partitioning +File Stream partitioning ) through these 20 files.
I have Data compression of the required tables only.
I have one table of more than 300 GB alone which is partitioned as mentioned above.
I have implemented Read Committed Snapshot isolation level using row versioning integrated so well with File stream technology since it is a new feature of SQL 2008 R2.
DB is in simple recovery model for garbage collection of all file stream data as a result of much Delete /update in images themselves.
So any one has any idea about such case..How to solve it…?

    Hi,
How big is database ? Does F drive has enough space on it. Issue does not seems with SQL Server backup it is with F drive or network connecting Server to drives.
Can you give more information about F drive is it a SAN, Local disk ?
If SQL server backup would have been issue it would have not processed uptill 70 % ( unles its bug). First error message with OS error 5 means access denied. Ater then you gave necessary rights and now backup issue is not due to SQL Server but while writing
to F drive some unusual thing is happeing which is causing backup to fail. Can you also involve SAN team as well.
** SAME DATABASE BACKUP IS COMPLETED SUCCESSFULLY ON OTHER DRIVE **
Does this mean backup of same database completes successfully on other drive if so it is a SAN issue or connection issue between SAN and server
Is SQL server 2008 updated to latest service pack ? Why do you use 80 compatibility mode. Although these questions are not realted to backup

  • MS SQL Server 2008 -- Daily Backup

    Hello,
My real need is simply to do a daily backup of a database : I have SQL Server 2008
    ( not express ) .
My user is    sa       and has full control on the database.
I have searched the web and found many places where they say to do a     Task -> Backup    and then click on "script action to job". This option is greyed out ( and it is NOT express) and I am using the   sa
    user will FULL privileges.
    I read here ( http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/sqlserver/en-US/4c5b5ff3-f2cd-4439-b878-de0891a5eedf/sql-server-management-studio-express-script-action-to-job-grayed-out?forum=sqldatabaseengine )  that I may need to    "Install
    Integration Services"   .
However, when I go to do this  (
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143731(v=sql.105).aspx ) , I read:
You can install SQL Server Integration Services on a computer that has no previous instances of SQL Server.
Well, my server is already installed and running in production.
Q: can I "Install Integration Services" even if I have an SQL server installed and running ?
Q: do I absolutely require to have Integration Services to automate the backups?
Q: any simple way to just dump the database every night to a folder ?
    Thanks!
    Johnny

You can use the Database Maintenance Wizard to setup a daily backup job.
BOL: "Use the Maintenance Plan Wizard
This topic describes how to create a single server or multiserver maintenance plan using the Maintenance Plan Wizard in SQL Server 2014. The Maintenance Plan Wizard creates a maintenance plan that Microsoft SQL Server Agent can run on a regular basis. This
allows you to perform various database administration tasks, including backups, database integrity checks, or database statistics updates, at specified intervals."

    Hello,
    >>'\\DBBackup\SharePoint_backup\DB_backup_2014_02_13_122719_5314660.bak'. Operating system error 5(Access is denied.).
This clearly points out to fact that your SQL Server service account does not have permission of read/write on shared location, simple.
    >>But when I open the shared path in the Windows Explorer it opens successfully.
This is because when you are browsing through explorer your windows login credential is used to access that folder but when you are running backup your SQL Server service account permission is used to write backup on shared folder ( which I assume it does
not have ) so the access denied error.
    Hope this helps
PS: I reffered the link its maily how you specify backup path its not about access denied error due to SQL server service acount not having privilege

  • SQL Server 2008 R2 Backup jobs are failing

I have a problem with SQL Server 2008 R2. First the management studio package is failing to load. backup jobs on that server are failing to run. The server won't accept any installation. The Installation of .Net Framework failed, the Installation of SQL
server 2008 R2 SP2 also failed, Trying to repair SQL Server through the CD also failed. Actually the server cannot install anything on it. When you try to initiate the installation it comes back and say check online for solution or close the program.
I am desperate here as I cannot backup

When you try to initiate the installation it comes back and say check online for solution or close the program.
Are you sure this is the error, I updated SP2 last week and I got the same message but if I remember correctly there was a continue button as well. Could you post the errors.
SP2 not installing, .net framework not installing, ssms not loading up and backups not running all could be due to different issues. Consider these as different and post error message that you are receiving for the issue which is most important for you.

  • Problem with full backup with copy only in maintenance plan sql server 2008

    Hello
I am starter DBA for sql server in general
I have problem related to backup with maintenance plan in sql server 2008 and 2008 r2
I created maintenance plan to take full back up  with copy only option checked, but when I check the back up in backupset table is_copy_only column it shows 0 for databases that I run job for.
I did the same steps on sql server 2012 and I checked backupset table is_copy_only column it shows 1 for databases that I run job for .so it works as it should be
Note: all the servers I mention here are production servers

Copy-only Backup  by using GUI ( SSMS) in SQL Server 2008 but it was not available in  Maintenance Plan "Back
Up Database Task". Now in SQL Server 2012 It is included in "Back Up Database
    Task".

  • Resore SQL server 2008 SP3 database to SQL server 2008 R2 SP1

I have a dump from a SQL server 2008 SP3 server and I'm trying to restore it to SQL server 2008 R2 SP1 server but getting the error:
    Msg 3241, Level 16, State 0, Line 2
The media family on device 'E:\Work\backup.bak0' is incorrectly formed. SQL Server cannot process this media family.
    Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Line 2
    RESTORE FILELIST is terminating abnormally.
Are these versions incompatible or is it just a problem with the file? If they are incompatible, I could upgrade my target server to SQL server 2008 R2 SP2, would this help?
The exact version info is as follows:
    Source server: Microsoft SQL Server 2008 (SP3) - 10.0.5500.0 (X64)   Sep 21 2011 22:45:45   Copyright (c) 1988-2008 Microsoft Corporation  Standard Edition (64-bit) on Windows NT 5.2 <X64> (Build 3790: Service Pack 2)
    Target Server:  Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 (RTM) - 10.50.1617.0 (X64)   Apr 22 2011 19:23:43   Copyright (c) Microsoft Corporation  Developer Edition (64-bit) on Windows NT 6.1 <X64> (Build 7601: Service Pack 1)
Thanks in advance for your help.

    SQL server 2008 SP3 is technically a lower version than 2008 R2 SP1
but it was released after it.
The service packs release date don't matter, only the major+minor build versions are important; restore should work in your constellation.
During FTP transfer the file could be damaged, that's possible. The backup file could be also "blocked" by OS because it was download from a different server; then you have to unblock it like every other download file.

  • How to restore SQL Server 2008 database to SQL Server Express 2012

How to restore SQL Server 2008 database to SQL Server Express 2012.
I BACKED UP a SQL Server 2008 database from work, which runs the enterprise version of 2008, and I tried to RESTORE it to my new 64-Bit home PC which is running the new SQL Server Express 2012 64-Bit (Advanced Edition).
But if fails. I get the following message text.
Can anyone help me please. I thought restoring a 2008 database to the later version 2012 would be possible.
Here is the error message. Thanks.

Are you sure your database is SQL server 2008 from error message it seems your SQL server version is 2000.I guess you have multiple versions of SQL server.
AFAIK you cannot restore backup of SQL server 2000 to 2012 directly .Restore it first to SQL 2008/2008R2 or 2005 then take backup again of new database created and then you would be able to restore it on 2012.Its kind of intermediate way
Also make sure your DB size is less than 10 G as max DB size supported by Express edition is 10 G and if your DB size is more than 10 G restore will fail.
You are also trying to restore enterprise DB backup on express edition so you will loose enterprise features on express edition

I will very appriciate if someone can help me solve it. I was trying to set Full control for my account in Properties/Security of root folder and try again but error is still.
    Many thanks

    Hi Foreverduy,
Before you run SQL Server 2008 express setup, make sure that you have installed Windows installer 4.5 and.NET Framework 3.5 SP1 manually. For more information about the process, please refer to the article:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143506(v=sql.100).aspx. Moreover, please turn off all the third-party softwares which could prohibit the installation process.
According to your error message, the issue could be due to that your account has no rights to install SQL Server, or the corruption on the media.
Firstly, please ensure that your account has admin rights. Also make sure that you right-click the setup.exe and choose “Run as administrator” to complete the installation.
Secondly, please check if "msdbdata.mdf" file exists at d:\8268cd7b247d294de359c9\x86\setup\sql_engine_core_inst_msi\PFiles\SqlServr\MSSQL.X\MSSQL\Binn\Template. If it exists, please make sure that your account has read permission to the extracted
    folder.
However, if the file doesn't exist in the extraction, the media could be corrupt. Please download the
    media
again and check if the issue still occurs.
    Regards,
    Michelle Li

  • How to delete the Folder from sql server 2008

    Hi all,
I was trying to delete the folder from sql server 2008 with the below script
DECLARE @path VARCHAR(256) -- path for backup files
    DECLARE @cmd VARCHAR(8000)
    DECLARE @folderName VARCHAR(256) -- filename for backup
    SET @folderName = + (CONVERT(varchar(10), GETDATE()-7, 112))  -- 7 days back date folder name
    SET @path = 'I:\Backup_Test\' + @folderName -- Folder path
    SET @cmd = 'del ' + @path -- Delete
    EXEC master..xp_cmdshell @cmd
    --Print @cmd
This is not working it was asking the Confirmation (I:\Backup_Test\20100629\*, Are you sure (Y/N)? ) what will i do to the delete the folder.
    Thanks,
    Prasad R.

I would notice   you that T-SQL does not play well to do things like that. Do not you want using .net language to delete folders?
    Old method is
    declare @HR int, @CFOLDER varchar(255),@FSO int
        set @CFOLDER='D:\folder\'
        EXEC @HR = sp_OACreate 'Scripting.FileSystemObject', @FSO OUT
        EXEC @HR = sp_OAMethod @FSO, null, 'DeleteFolder', @CFOLDER
Now regarding to your second question please examine xp_fileexist  system stored procedure
    CREATE FUNCTION dbo.fn_file_exists(@filename VARCHAR(300))
      RETURNS INT
    AS
    BEGIN
      DECLARE @file_exists AS INT
      EXEC master..xp_fileexist @filename, @file_exists OUTPUT
      RETURN @file_exists
    END
    GO
    -- test
    SELECT dbo.fn_file_exists('c:\a.txt')
