Inconsistent Aspect Radio upon Export

Good Morning,
I'm having trouble keeping my aspect ratios clean when I export my project to a file. My project settings are:
Editing Mode HD 1080i
Frame Size- 1920 x 1080 (16:9)
In making the movies, I tend to do a lot of zooming on stills as well as videos. In the editor, the borders of my source file are ALWAYS outside the project frame (so that the entire frame is filled with image, no black space), but when I export it, I'm seeing the black edge of the frame on some clips, as if the export frame size got bigger than it was in the project. It's hard to describe so I hope that makes sense.
When I export, I'm using "NTSC Standard" but making sure to set the aspect ratio to 16:9 to fit my project settings.
Can someone please explain how to export projects so that the aspect ratios match and are clean, without any unexpected black space appearing in certain clips?
Thank you.

The first thing we need to do is learn what your source is.
Right now we almost have enough to proceed with confidence
1920 x 1080 pixels 16:9
29.97 frames per second
But what is lacking is whether you are shooting interlaced or progressive video, 1080i or 1080p.
Can you determine that from your camera settings?
If you have 1080i, then your project preset =
NTSC
AVCHD
Full HD1080i30
If you have 1080p, then your project preset =
NTSC
DSLR
1080p
DSLR 1080p30 or DSLR 1080p30 @ 29.97
If not from the camera settings, we could get the answer, i or p, from the MediaInfo properties readout (its Tree View)
http://sourceforge.net/projects/mediainfo/
Be careful of your download and install here so that you do not get unwanted programs and toolbars as well as the valuable MediaInfo program.
For now let us assume that your camera is recording 1080i (1920 x 1080 @ 29.97 interlaced frames per second).
New question becomes what are the requirements of your viewing via your player. Let us try the following export choices:
If you really want a MPEG export
HD 16:9
Publish+Share/Computer/MPEG and set Presets = MPEG2 1920 x 1080i30
That will give you a MPEG2 HD.m2t file (1920 x 1080 @ 29.97 interlaced frames per second).
SD Widescreen 16:9
Publish+Share/Computer/MPEG and set Presets = NTSC DVD Widescreen.
That will give you a MPEG1.mpg file (720 x 480 @ 29.97 interlaced frames per second)
But you might want to consider
Publish+Share/Computer/AVCHD with Presets = MP4 H.264 1920 x 1080p30
for AVCHD.mp4 1920 x 1080 @ 29.97 progressive frames per second
or
Publish+Share/Computer/AVCHD with Presets = MP4 NTSC DV Widescreen
for AVCHD.mp4 720 x 480 @ 29.97 progressive frames per second.
Please check out the above to see if they work for you.
I am guessing that you went off track with your 4:3 export setting for your 16:9 project and subsequent attempts to resolve that.
We will be watching for your follow up.
Any clarification needed, please do not hesitate to ask.
Thanks.

  • Is there a way to insert AFDs into a file upon export?

I don't *think* this is possible, but I wanted to get confirmation.  Can Premiere insert an AFD flag to a file upon export?

AFD = Active Format Description.  A flag contained in either a file's metadata or VANC that tells a receiver/IRD/set-top-box how to display an image.  For example, an HD file/stream may contain an AFD flag for 16:9 Letterbox, so if the file/stream is downconverted the receiver/IRD/set-top box will display the SD version letterboxed, as opposed to center cut, anamorphic, etc.
I know there are a lot of hardware items that can insert AFDs (AJA FS1, FS2, etc) and dedicated transcoders (FlipFactory, Carbon Coder, Elemental) but it would seem like this is something an editor could do as well.  Maybe not, but I'd like to know for certain...

  • How to keep photo files in order upon export?

My wife has imported two sets of files from two different cameras into iPhoto.  Due to date/time stamping errors in the cameras these files did not import in the order she hoped.  Consequently she created an Album and renamed and reordered the .jpg files, and all looked good.  However, she would now like to export these files into a folder, with each file retaining its current order/place, and burn this to a flash drive.  The end product is to be a Powerpoint presentation on a PC which will be developed by a friend.  The problem is that upon export of the .jpgs into a desktop folder, the order of the files in the album is not retained.  I suspect that the original metadata is taking over.  Is there a way that she can export these in the order she has in the album?  Thank you.

Here's one (of several) way(s) to do what you want:
Make an Album of the photos, then drag the pics into your preferred order.
Then Photos Menu: Batch Change -> Set Title to Text "John's Birthday", for instance, and tick the box to append a number to each Photo. Now your photos are titled 'John's Birthday 001, John's Birthday 002 ... etc'
Then File -> Export and in the Export dialogue set the Filename to "Use Title"
Sort on Filename in the FInder and you end up with a folder full of images in the same order as the Album in iPhoto.

  • Has anyone seen this? All by "c's" in a font are "blocks" upon export!

It was a fairly short (test) project. Upon export, every "c" in my text was "blocked." What gives?

Nope. It's Helvetica, factory-installed FCPX. (Not 3rd party.) Never had the problem before. Doesn't happen with other fonts. I re-exported ("shared") and the blocks disappeared.
Then... it showed up again intermittently. Trashed prefs. Yep. It's a genuine bug, even if it's one-of-a-kind that is particular to my system, at this moment.
I'm not terribly worried. But, I'll be interested to see if it replicates itself inside other machines running 10.0.8. Hopefully folks will, literally, keep us "posted."

  • Slideshow creates massive white borders upon export, but doesn't show prior to export

Slideshow module creates massive white space / borders upon export, despite not showing any in the module.  You can see what it exports here: http://i.imgur.com/V71NpDH.png, and what the module shows here: http://i.imgur.com/uegXyiW.jpg
Any ideas? This is driving me up the wall. Images are sized properly for the slideshow size (1080P). Guides are set to 0px.
Apple Retina MBP, all software is updated.

Try using a different graphics type for your logo. Some don't translate well to Word. I used to know which ones were compatible but that was long ago and the list may have changed.

  • Audio drops and cracks and odd sounds upon export...

working on CS4, on my mac powerbook.
upon exporting the audio has issues it doesn't in the project editing/CS4.
I've used crossfades, exponential fades to be specific... and even when I delete them, I have issues with clips I've never used them on.
the issue is the audio at the start of some of the clips drops low and then, after a second or two rises to the level it was set at.
I thought I was finished and only want to out put this cut to watch, make changes and be finished... I could really use some help on this... ugh.

well, I export it thru Premiere Pro CS4 and cs4 sends it to Adobe Media Encoder CS4.
I've found if I delete the fades and do it manually it seems to fix the issue... and the crackaling seems to be from the audio level hitting the red.
I'm still playing with the issue and have yet to export the entire document so I'm not sure my work arounds will work.
I'm still puzzled as this has NEVER happened before and I've used the same footage for smaller projects.

  • Audio dropping upon export

Perhaps there is a relevant thread covering this topic...
Audio is dropping out upon export to QuickTime for iDVD..
This is a 41-minute production with lots of key frames. Can't figure out a pattern to what gets dropped, but two attempts have the same audio missing . . . and it's clearly on the FCE timeline (version 2.0.3).
The timelline, BTW, is composed of four sequences.
    Any ideas?

    Tom:
    Thanks for responding.
Yes, I mixdown each nested sequence. Strangely, however, even after doing so one of the nested sequences -- when strung together -- indicated some unrendered areas. I then rendered again.
Also interesting that exporting the individual sequences directly works fine -- no dropped audio. This, I believe, will enable me to work around this problem by using sequential files in DVD Studio Pro 2, instead of iDVD. But that's a lot of work.
Appreciate any other ideas or thoughtful suggesions. Thanks very much.

  • Black bars alongside video+squished aspect ratio on export

I'm trying to get my import/export settings right--I keep getting black bars and a squished or stretched image when my videos export.  Since Elements doesn't read MOD I've been using miro to convert, which doesn't like to export to mp4 all that well to begin with (which furthers my diagnosis problems.)  I don't know anything about video image->pixel size (nor can I find anything online that makes sense to me) and canon's website doesn't tell me what my camera is shooting in in those terms, but I've been using the widescreen format--what is that size??  I'm not sure if this problem is because of defaulting project settings on import (Elements not picking up on the proper format and defaulting to something else), an exporting problem (I've tried all the different settings under publish+share>computer>mpeg4 and quicktime>NTSC DVD standard and widescreen, as well as every other export option I can think of), or a conversion problem (why doesn't Elements accept MOD to begin with?  Final Cut 7 does no problem!)  Everything looks good in the editing process, plays fine etc.
Is this a simple fix?  The videos play fine in quicktime, but VLC catches the bars, which makes me think it's a simple solution to a complex diagnosis.  Please help, thanks.

    Thanks for the update.
Let us look into the following next, one problem down (the aspect ratio), next the quality of playback of your Timeline as seen in the Edit Mode Monitor.
    1. Given that you are working with .mod widescreen 16:9.
    a. Open a new Premiere Elements 11 Mac project. Go to File Menu/New/Project and set the project preset yourself in the new project dialog. You want NTSC DV Widescreen. Make sure that you have a check mark next to "Force Selected Project Setting on this Project" before you exit the new project dialog.
    b. Once back in the Premiere Elements workspace, go to Add Media/Files and Folders and import your mod.widescreen into Project Assets.
    c. Right click the .mod widescreen file in Project Assets, select Interpret Footage, and, in the Interpret Footage dialog, dot the Conform to: and set that to DV/DV NTSC Widescreen 16:9 (1.2121).
    d. Drag your .mod widescreen to the Timeline from Project Assets. Do you see no colored line over the content, an orange line, or a green line? If an orange line, render the Timeline with the Render button or pressing the Enter Key of the computer main keyboard. Is the .mod widescreen now display the same, worse, or better than before we started all this?
Also, right click the monitor, select Playback Quality, and see if there is any difference in what you are seeing if you use Highest instead of Automatic as the set. Also check to see if Magnification there is "Fit" rather than other.
Is your video card driver up to date according to the web site of the manufacturer of the video card?
Please review the above and let us know the outcome.
    Thanks.

Although conversion .mod widescreen to another format is always a consideration, it has not been found to be necessary in essentially most cases. Classically, if an import problem with this type of file, the renaming of the .mod file extension to .mpg prior to import took care that while Interpret Footage took care of the aspect ratio issue.
I just saw your note about MPEG Streamclip. That works great for Windows for conversion to DV AVI. Never tried it for a .mov export for Mac. But remember there is an option for 4:3 or 16:9 in that dialog (or there should be...I will take a look if you do not find it). So no distortion expected since MPEG Streamclip should be supplying that problematic 16:9 flag.

  • Wrong aspect ratio when export to mov file

    Hi,
Hoping that you can help me. I've being filming some Hi-def widescreen 16:9 footage which i've want to export to a mov file. However, whatever option i chose, the resutant export gets converted to 4:3.
I'm not sure what i'm doing wrong. Here are the details.
    Original File
    PAL HDV - 1080i 25fps
    Export
    Codec H.264
    Output 1440x1080 25fps Upper 100%
    Source 1440x1080 25fps Upper
    Aspect: D1/DV PAL widescreen 16:9
Hope you can help. Let me knwo if you need any more information.
    Cheers
    Rob

Thanks for your input. I think the main issue is that i originally captured the video using another peice of software. These files were 1440x1080 so i was getting 'letter boxing' on the left and right. After doing a lot of reading, i now understand the importance of selecting the correct project setting
Leading on from this, I'm about to do some more filming and have hired a HDV camcorder (Sony HVR 27p - PAL). It's 1080i and can film in interlaced (25 or 50fps) or progressive. (25fps)
    My questions are:
The required output playback file (mov file format) needs to be progressive. Should i film in progressive as well, or stick with interlaced and change the output settings when creating the output file?
If i stick with interlaced, do i film in 50 or 25 as the output file needs to be 25fps?
Although the camera captures 16:9, the pixels are 1440x1080 (which by all accounts in usual with HDV cameras.) Do i select a project setting whose setup is 1440x1080 or do i use 1720x1080?
Thanks a lot for your help so far.

  • Image hyperlinks are lost upon export to HTML

    Hi,
I have many documents I need to convert to HTML.  I need the images in the documents to be links.  This has worked fine, according to normal procedures if the images are png, jpg, or gifs.  However, most of my images are not those formats.  So if I have an eps, pdf, and tiff in my document, upon html export, there is no hyperlink.  That is, the <a href></a> tags are not in the HTML at all.  But if I convert the images to png, jpeg, or gifs, put them in my document, then choose that file format for conversion, the links work fine.
I want to say there is an issue with the link tags upon file conversion.  It could be something else, but I am not sure why it works for certain file formats and not others.  I figured ID would keep the association with the hyperling after converting an image from say and eps to jpg.  If anyone knows what if going on, that would be most helpful, or if anyone knew of a good way to keep hyperlinks for images after exporting to HTML, I would greatly appreciate it.
(I can obviously add the link tags myself in the HTML, or convert the images myself and put them in the docs, but I have many documents and would like some automated way.)
    Thanks for the help!

Might help if you told us what version of InDesign you're using.

  • FCP project not the correct aspect ratio when exporting to Quicktime

    Hello All;
I am trying to export a FCP project in its native resolution (1440 X 1080) to Quicktime but everytime I try, the aspect ratio is messed up and people look taller and thinner than they should.
The project is a resolution of 1440 X 1080 as determined by examining the sequence settings in FCP.
    I configure quicktime (see below) to a resolution of 1440 X 1080.
So why isn't my Quicktime video the correct resolution when I play it with the IMac's Quicktime player ? I shrink the player to 1/2 size to fit it all on the screen.
My exact settings are below ...
    Export - Using Quicktime Conversion
    Format - Quicktime Movie
    Video Settings - Compressor - MPEG-4
    Quality - Best
Not sure if I changed the framerate - if I did, I probably changed it to 29.97
I didn't touch the other settings in the video settings - left them to default
I didn't change the filter settings - I left them at default
Size - 1440 X 1080 (The actual resolution of my source video)
I checked the box - preserve aspect ratio using letterbox (If applicable)
Other settings were left at default
Sound Settings - Format - AAC
    Rate - 48 KHZ
Render Settings - Quality - Best
Target Bitrate - 128 KHZ (This was left at default - I did not change it)
Prepare for Internet Streaming - Fast Start checked (This was default - I did not change it)
All other settings not specifically mentioned were left at default.
    Thanks. Tim

I don't have much of an answer for you, but to test try not checking the preserve aspect ratio. Rather than reexport the entire 1 hour just export 10 seconds so that you can trouble shoot different things.
    Hope that helps a bit,
    Eric

  • Final Cut Pro "improves" my exposure upon export.

I'm using Final Cut Pro 6. I export my entire timeline as a series of stills, which I batch process in Photoshop to apply specific curves. Then I reimport the stills into a timeline.
When I export the timeline, Final Cut takes it upon itself to change the exposure. Is there a way to override this extremely helpful feature?

Thanks for the tip. It didn't help, though.
Interestingly, when I open the exported clip in Final Cut, it looks better than when I open it in QuickTime. Which seems to indicate that the problem is actually in getting the two Apple products to agree on how to display something on an Apple monitor.
    Kind of frustrating.

  • Distorted aspect ratio of exported WMV clip

This is truly bizarre. If I output from the timeline using Quicktime Conversion to a WMV file, the aspect ratio is wider than when I output to a Quicktime format. This also happens when I export to the AVI file type.
    Any clues?

****! That didn't help. I just tried every combination of pixel dimensions and frame size I could and nothing helps. No matter what, the clips are still exporting as too wide.
I think I'll be exporting as 640x480 after all. I can't figure a way around this.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Distorted Aspect Ratio of Exported Frames

My project's aspect ratio is 16:9 (720 horizontal, 576 vertical).
I inserted a clip into the timeline.
I exported a certain frame to a file as an image.
    The image file's size: 720 x 576.
I proceeded to import the image file into the project, and inserted it into the timeline.
The image's aspect ratio is not the same as the original footage.
Specifically, the horizontal side is narrower than originally (see attached screenshots).
    What causes this discrepancy?
More importantly, what can i do to get exported frames to match the aspect ratio of the project?

OK, I've got the BMP. When I looked at your images, I thought that we were seeing your still image on the Timeline. We are not. That shape/size is what was produced.
Now, remember that I am on PrE 4, so things will be different in PrE 8. Still, I should be able to get you close. In PrE 4, one uses File>Export>Frame to do a Frame capture under the CTI (Current Time Indicator), and visible in the Program Monitor. When you choose this, you will get the standard Windows dialog screen, where you name and locate your still image. There is also a settings button, that will open up a second dialog box, for you to adjust many attributes of your Frame capture. There, you will have three choices in the left-hand Pane: General, Video and Keyframe and Rendering. First, go to General, and you'll get File Type w/ a dropdown. There, you can choose the format type and should have JPEG, TIFF, BMP, TARGA and GIF (maybe more in PrE 8, like PNG?). I'd stick with TIFF or BMP. About the only other choice is whether you want to add this captured still in your Project, or not. That is your choice.
Go to the Video listing in that left-hand Pane. There you can choose the Frame Size, the PAR and the Color Depth. Make sure that these match your Project's and your source footage's exact specs. Unless you need the Alpha Channel, and are using either TIFF or TARGA, leave Color Depth to Millions of colors. Otherwise, choose Millions +, where the + is that Alpha Channel.
I'd guess that it's in those settings, as to what is happening with your Frame capture. Let me know if you get this sorted, and sorry for my mis-step, but I was not clear on what I was seeing, and where I was seeing it.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Aspect Ratio on Export

    I'm working on a 720x576 Anamorphic timeline
And am exporting my final as a ProRes422 file.
When I try opening the exported file in Quicktime, it shows it as 4x3 rather than 16x9
Have I missed something in the settings?

I decided to try exporting my 720x576 ProRes 422 MOV via compressor.
I selected the DV PAL Anamorphic preset and changed the codec to Apple ProRes 422 and made sure my aspect size was 16:9.
After encoding it, the MOV file still looked 4x3
I then click on command J> Presentation TAB> unchecked Conform Aperture To: Clean and then re-checked it and BINGO.... the frame size changed to this
I won't bother working out why and how, I'll just use compressor in the future :-D
