Inconsistent windows printers

Ive been fighting this one for some time and it looks like others have as well. Let me start by asking a question and then elaborating:
Is there a location where JRE printer driver exceptions may be diagnosed and resolved (by sharing the experiences of others)?
Here is the problem I face: we have over 1000 users of a Java desktop GUI application. Everything works very well (we are happy). But have a user say they are having a printer issue and the expression on the techs face is one you wont normally see outside the dentist office its bad, very bad.
Generally, the printer issues we face are JVM exceptions, complete with an hs_err_pid###.log files (Im looking at 5 right now). However we have other issues including tiny print and massive print. We are starting to log these issues to better support our users, but we do get surprised very regularly (throw in a FAX machine with matching print driver and Ill just send you an hs_err_pid###.log file to save time).
I know windows print drivers rank at the bottom of the list for code quality, but I face the biggest problem of all when one of our users notes that they are able to print from all other windows applications except this Java application. Now I have to do something
Back to the question: if the problem can not be contained or solved in code, then would it be reasonable to ask for a website to help Java developers share information (e.g. this ABC V1.0 driver sucks upgrade to V1.1 and you are good to go).
Sorry: Im a little frustrated as my 1000 (and growing) users are as well.
Thanks!

1. Check permissions of the printer share.
2. Download the latest drivers for Mac OS X from Epsons homepage. Make sure you use these during printer setup.

  • NT_STATUS_NO_MEMORY errors when printing in Tiger to Windows printers

I cannot print to any windows printers using Tiger 10.4.4
Here is a list of printers I have tried:
HP Laserjet 4100N served from Windows 2003 server.
Xerox Docucenter 2240 PS served from Windows 2003 server.
HP Laserjet 4000N served from Windows 2003 server.
Samsung ML-1710 served from Windows XP Professional workstation.
I will get either one of the following errors:
    NTSTATUS_LOGONFAILURE
    NTSTATUS_NOMEMORY
This happens both at home (the XP workstation) and at work (the win2K3 server). None of the Macs at work (6 all running tiger) can print to any of the printers, they all could print under OS 10.3.9.
Something seems really broken with the Samba printing subsystem.
I can mount fileshares off the same machine with the same credentials so I'm quite confident it is not an authentication issue.
I also have no difficulty finding the printer, I simply cannot print to it.
I have used native drivers and gimp-print drivers all with no success.
Also note that gimp-print drivers do not work on Intel based Macs (they just crash).

I can't use the HP JetDirect protocol for some odd reason it fails to connect when I specify the IP address of the printer.
I get a NTSTATUS_NOMEMORY error printing to the LaserJet 4000N next to my office using the SAMBA printing mechanism. This occurrs with every Mac in the building.
It would be really nice if Apple could update the samba version to the latest release from samba.org to at least see if this fixes the issue.
From the looks of these forums, there appears to be plenty of problems with Windows printers with the 10.4.4 update.

  • No Windows printers visible

I had already connected a WIndows shared printer. However I was having problems with something else, which may have been due to the Windows's PC name being "Desktop". I have since changed the PC name.
I then went to printers and deleted the old printer as "Desktop" no longer exists. Now when I click to Add a printer there is no workgroup name appearing in the first column. I have added the workgroup name in Network/advanced/wins but still no workgroup name appearing.
How do I get the worhgroup name to appear?

I am pretty sure the NetBIOS service will be running although I don't know how to check this exactly on OS X. I would have to research this. On Windows you could type nbtstat in command prompt, but that is not available on OS X.
If the Workgroup has still not appeared yet, then do you have the Mac and PC set to the same IP address subnet? The subnet is typically the first three sets of numbers of your IP address, while the last number is called your network address. The discovery of a workgroup is restricted to the same subnet.
Having said that you don't need the Windows name to add the network queue. There is an advanced option with the Add Printer browser that lets you manually enter the SMB path. Since you know the IP address of the Win7 box, you could use the Advanced function to add the network printer queue.
But before I explain how this is done, I believe from a previous post that you have the Canon LBP-3000. As I mentioned in the thread, you cannot use the CAPT driver when you have the printer shared from a Windows computer. This is a limitation of the CAPT driver. So, are you trying to still create a connection from the Mac via the PC to the LBP-3000, or do you have a different model of printer that you are trying to connect to?

  • Seeing Windows Printers on a Network

Color me frustrated. We were using OS 10.4 with no problems and I had the brilliant idea to change over to 10.5. The first computer I installed had the fated Blue Screen on restart. Well, off to the local electronic store for Firewire so I could hook up my laptop to remove the offending files. That accomplished I installed on a second computer. To my surprise it went okay. Now let's try to print to one of our Windows based RIP's and printer. What!!! No printer is listed in my printers list for this machine. All the other printers on the network are there but not this one. Now why would it get rid of the windows printer but not the others? I call my tech support for this printer. I get the usual, let me find someone that knows more about Macs. Of course I have to call back twice with the same response every time and no return phone call. I call the guy that wrote the software for this RIP (he was foolish enough to give me his number the last time I had a problem). He tried to run through all the possibilities but was busy with a large project and asked if I could check on Apples web site for answers. Well, here I am, hat in hand. Does anyone know what I can do? We had no problem before the new OS. In fact we still had one computer running the old 10.4 OS and it can see the Windows machine just fine. It must be in the new OS. And yes, I did check Epson's (the printer in question) web site and downloaded the correct driver. At least according the them it was correct. It just does not show up in the Windows/workgroup panel of my printers.
So there you have it all you eggheads out there. It seems all the so called experts I have asked cannot tell me anything. Who is man/woman enough to tackle this complex issue. Any Apple experts lurking in the shadows? Afraid to come out into the light of day and confess your sins?
    HEEELLLLPPPPP!

OK then you haveto set it up the way I had to. Go to add printer if it is not there add advanced to the toolbar. Click advanced then type and choose windows. uou will see smb:// type in the windows server name then / then the printer name. You can the gice the printer a name the location if you want. Lastly you must choose a printer driver. There are alot of networking bugs in leapord and I hope they get them woorked out in 10.5.2.

  • Os x can't find windows printers

I have a mac mini running os x tiger on a wireless network with windows xp computers (via a Verizon wireless router/modem). One of the xp computers has 2 printers attached. One of the printers was set up under the previous os version (panther?), shows up on the printer list, and prints without problems. But when I try to add the 2nd printer, the printer browser doesn't see it -- when I select "choose more printers", and select the network workgroup in the window, all I see are the computers hooked up to the network, no printers. The browser also doesn't see the printer actually hooked up, either, so if I disconnected it I wouldn't be able to reconnect it. I have confirmed that both printers are on, working properly, and have sharing enabled. I would be very grateful for any suggestions.
    Regards,
    Jack

I'm afraid you've lost me. I'm quite sure I never had to enter an IP address of the XP computer to add a printer; you're supposed to be able to just click on the "add computer" button, and the IP browser is supposed to find it for you. And if I did enter an IP address when I set up the network, I must have gotten it right, since in every other respect the computers find each other just fine. The only problem now is apparently that since I upgraded to Tiger the IP browser no longer finds the printers (even though one is attached and works fine).

  • Finding Windows printers on the network?

If I know the DNS name (or IP address) of a Windows print server on my network is there a command line tool (or tools) that will allow me to query it for information about the printers it serves.... such as printer names and their IP addresses?
Thanks for any pointers you can provide,
    Steve

    Bump...
I made a little headway on this so I'm hoping someone can help me get a little further down the road. I've figured out that this command:
    smbutil view //myUserID@SomePrintServer
will prompt me for my password and then spit out a list of "resources" available on the print server. The list of information includes the print queue names and a short description of each printer.
Can anyone tell me, once I've got the name of one of these print queues, if there is any additional command line utility that will allow me to query some more information about that particular print queue... specifically the IP address of the actual printer?
Apparently if a Windows user set themselves up to print to one of these print queues and then views the properties of the printer they can see the IP address... so I know the information is available under certain circumstances.

  • Adding to available "Printer Models" for shared Windows printers

I have a MacBook (my first Mac) and I have been able to get it to network with my Windows XP desktop, and it can print to the Canon Pixma iP4000 printer connected to the Windows machine.
However, in Printer Setup, I had to choose a Printer Model, and the closest I could find is "Canon S800 - Gimp Print v.5.0.0 beta 2" -- which allows me to print, but the printouts are all in draft mode.
I would like more control over the printer settings. Is there a way to add to that list of available Printer Models (i.e., is there some way to download an update for that list)??

    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Thanks, Greg, for the iFelix link. I had found that already, and run through the steps many times last night, and it still did't work on my MacBook.
However, I did find another set of instructions on another web site that helped me get it working. Basically, I set it up as an LPD/LPR printer instead of a Windows Printer, addressing it via the IP address of my WinXP machine. I still have to use the manual sheet feeder (the driver can't deal properly with the paper tray on the bottom of the printer), but at least I was able to print.
Oddly, I just tried again using the iFelix instructions, and now it works! Why it didn't work last night, I don't know. But now I've got two means of accessing this printer.

  • Inconsistent Windows Update policy

We have a group of XP machines which have not been getting their Windows Updates even
though I've specified it in the ZEN workstation policy. This policy is applied to
all of our campus XP computers, and since it seems to work in most places I can't
figure out why these machines are having a problem.
The policy specifies to automatically download and install updates. However, some of
these systems are configured to download but wait for administrator approval to
install. The weirdest part is that some of them seem to be switching back and forth
between these two settings. As I was working on one yesterday that was set for admin
approval, I noticed that it had changed to automatic installation. I have no idea
why, but I suspect it's a policy issue.
Below are some lines pulled from the windowsupdate.log file on one the machines. It
shows the Windows auto update mode switching back and forth, and most of the time it
is not "scheduled" like it should be.
I've checked everything I know of. How does one troubleshoot this kind of thing?
    Thanks for any assistance.

  • Printing on window-based printers

I have a home network it is a linksys system I have a desk top, two lap tops all running xp. I have a HPall-in-one 750xi and a HP photosmart 8750. Each is on a wireless print server. all xp machines can print to either printer without problems. I can't get the mac book to recognize the priters and print from them. I did get the mac to print from the 8750 when directly connected but not through the print server. The mac can acess the internet fine through the network. I can't seem to acess any of the other network resources with the mac. I did call apple support which wasn't very helpful. They want to say it's a windows issue but the windows side of things seem fine to me. They also tried to make it seem as though trying to print from a mac to windows printers is difficult and that people don't try to do it frequently. I'm new to mac I jumped in when apple started touting it's compatablilty with windows networks- Isn't this a basic function (printing) in a network that should be possible if one wishes to call macs compatable with windows networks?

You may need to use a third-party driver such as the HPIJS drivers or the Gimp-Print drivers, but this is not the case with all printers.

  • I installed a new printer and set it as the Windows default printer but Thunderbird won't find it.

Using Windows 8.1 - x64 - Thunderbird 31.3.0 (Firefox 34.0.5 has found the new default printer)
I read about resetting printer.printer_printer and printer_printer but....
printer.printer_printer did not exist in the file.
Then I found printer_printer and chose "reset" closed and saved the file then closed and restarted Thunderbird.
But now the printer_printer command has disappeared completely from the file and the old printer info was left unchanged.
Then I went to the Windows "Printers and Devices" menu and deleted the old printer that Thunderbird was pointing to.
Then I closed Thunderbird again restarted Thunderbird and now the "print" command in the file menu is greyed out.
(Also the old printer info is still unchanged in the config file )
I would reinstall Thunderbird and just start over except I have about a dozen email accounts on several servers and have spent a lot of time recently on reconfiguring them to work on upgraded servers. Also I don't know how to save my emails if I reinstall Thunderbird (Is it possible to do this?)
I've googled for ideas but haven't found anything beyond the reset function.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I've rebooted numerous times, reloaded the software twice, spent 4 hrs on the phone with HP and 2 with Adobe. No luck. It simply doesn't show the new printer in the drop down menu for Pro or Reader and yet shows time in all in Office, Paint, Web options. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

  • Printing to HP OfficeJet 5610 connected to networked Windows Computer

I have an HP OfficeJet 5610 connected one of my windows (XP Pro SP2) computers that is on my network. I can see the printer under the Windows Printers tab, but there is not an applicable driver. I have installed the HP Printer software found on this page: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=oj-55822-2 &lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=441125&os=219&lang=en, but this didn't help. How can I get this to work.

Windows Printing and IP printing on OS X are provided by the CUPS system. You need a CUPS-capable driver to use these built-in network protocols. HP's drivers for non-postscript printers aren't CUPS drivers. You need to install the third-party hpijs driver (3-part set):
    http://www.linuxfoundation.org/en/OpenPrinting/MacOSX/hpijs
You also need to get the PPD because your model was left out of the current hpijs:
    http://openprinting.org/showprinter.cgi?recnum=HP-OfficeJet5610
Unfortunately there isn't a PPD there, either. I don't know how to obtain one. If we're patient, maybe Matt Broughton will come by and help us get the PPD.
You should experiment with the HP officejet 5500 foomatic model choice to see if it works.

  • Printing to a shared Windows printer

I can't seem to print to a shared Vista printer on my home network. I've scoured the Internet and this support site and have run into brick walls. According to the Apple web site: "Shared Windows printers automatically appear in the Mac OS X Printer Setup Utility so they can be added to the Macintosh as a local printer queue."
This isn't happening for me. When I bring up the Printer Setup Utility, I get the "Printer List". I click on "Add". I get the "Printer Browser". In the protocol selector, there are three protocols, none of which relate to Windows. So I click "More Printers..."
A secondary printer browser appears. I select "Windows Printing" in the top selector and "Home" (my Windows workgroup name) in the selector below that. I see three entries. These are the three computers on my home network (1 iMac, 2 Vista PCs). There are no printers.
There should be one printer, but there isn't. And that's the roadblock. I can access the shared folders on the computers in the network from my MacBook Pro and the Vista computer with no local printers can print to the shared Vista printer.
At work, I can print from this MacBook to a printer that is served by a Windows server of some kind. But on my home network, my iMac, my MacBook Pro, and my son's PowerBook are all equally unable to detect and print to the shared Vista printer. I should add that when the two Windows computers were running WinXP, the same problem existed.
My gut tells me that there is one tiny setting on either the PC or the Macs isn't set right. If anyone can enlighten me, I would be forever grateful.
    Thanks,
    Mike

I have a similar problem trying to network two Macs and a PC for printer and file sharing. I too have the nagging feeling that there's one simple setting somewhere that would cure the problem. I posted a query a week ago (4/21) and got a response from iFelix who directed me to web pages he's posted with step-by-step instructions on setting up Macs and PCs for printer and file sharing:
Sharing files between an XP PC and a Mac running OS 10.4.x
    http://tech.ifelix.net/3020.html
Printing to a printer on a XP PC from a Mac running 10.4.x
    http://tech.ifelix.net/3015.html
Printing to a printer on a Mac from a PC running Windows XP
    http://tech.ifelix.net/3000.html
The instructions didn't solve my problem but perhaps they will yours.

  • Printer goes missing on windows 7 64 bit

I have a Photosmart Premium (c309n-s) and I have Windows 7 on 3 different computers in the house. 2 notebook and 1 desktop, all use wireless connectivity. The printer is also setup wireless.
The installation works fine and after a random amount of time (sometimes 2 days, sometimes 4 weeks) the printer magically is no longer installed in the Windows Printers list. The FAX is still there, but not the printer. The HP solution software states no printer is installed and I need to run the setup again.
Wash , rinse and repeat. This has happened with the last 2 HP printers I have had. Same issue also happened with a networked (wired) AIO 7310 which I replaced with this new one.
This has been going on for years, anybody have any ideas how to stop this from happening? Reinstalling the device every few weeks is not my idea of quality software.

I have the same issue with a 6500A all-in-one running on Windows 7 64 bit.  When the computer updates with the printer on, the printer disappears.  Has to be at least partially re-installed.  HP technical people have no idea how to fix this problem.  This is the third time I have had to install the printer in 90 days.  If I only turn on the printer when I am using it and then turn it back off immediately when I am done, and certainly before I shut down the computer, it works better, but this is inconvenient.  This equipment should work dependably from the factory.  If I knew that doing away with wireless and wiring it to a USB port would fix it, I would.  But I still feel that computer updates play a big part in this............GREG

  • Using network printers

I purchased a PowerBook G4 running Tiger 10.4.3. I am part of a small ethernet network. All other computers are PCs. I had no trouble connecting to a hp laserjet printer on the network. We have a hp officejet 7100 printer connected to one of the PCs. My Mac seems to find it ok but it only prints garbage. The printer is not listed on the "add printers" list in the printer setup utility. I downloaded the latest printer driver from hp for that printer. It works great if the printer is connected directly to my Mac, but still won't work for me when it is connected to the pc. Any suggestions? Thanks.

The MacOS printer drivers provided for most inkjet and all-in-one printers won't support network printing to shared Windows printers.
You need to follow the instructions posted at http://www.efelix.co.uk/tech/3004.html . Key among those instructions is the installation of the third-party printer driver HPIJS along with Ghostscript - see http://www.linuxprinting.org/macosx/hpijs/

  • Win 2000 doesn't show netware printers

    I installed:
    A single Novell 5.0 Server with sp6a
A Win 2000 PC with Novell client 4.92sp2 IP and IPX
with some standard software as MS Office 2000, Adobe Acrobat Reader,
Norman Antivirus, Java 1.5 and son more.
Using the Windows printer wizard I choose "network printers"
and "search for" printers. Windows shows only "Microsoft windows
Printers" but no Novell Network and no Novell printer / queue.
Using Network Neighborhood and going to NDS with the Printer icon Windows
tells me, that I have to install this printer. Then it says, the printer
coulnt be installed or isn't valid.
From my WinXP prof. Notebook I have no problem to acces the Novell Printer.
    What's wrong?

    The problem is solved.
A software called "NET SUPPORT SCHOLL 7.01" from PCI - Software hooks a
part of the printer services. A senseless (!!!) DLL causes the problem.
See the email following (from PCI) for a workaround. I had to restart the
PC to for the changes to take effect.
    Thanks for your help!
    dear H. Wybranietz
Thank you for contacting NetSupport Technical concerning Printing Issue on
Novell via NetSupport School 7.01. This is not a problem usually found in
NetSupport School and is usually only reported regarding NetSupport
Manager, which includes a Print Capture feature.
The problem you are experiencing relates to NetSupport attempting to Hook
into the Print Driver in order to do this at start up we have to restart
the Print Spooler service at startup. After reading through your problem it
looks like the spooler service is not restarting.
Therefore, could you please remove the INJLIB.DLL file from the machine -
this will not cause any problems and will stop NetSupport from hooking into
the Printer driver. Which means you will not have to keep restarting the
    Print Spooler service.
The file INJLIB.dll is a NSM file but is included in NSS, removing this
file from the system will not remove any functionality from NSS. Please
    follow the steps below:
    1) Go into C:\Program Files\NetSupport School
    2) Find a file called injlib.dll
    3) Rename this file to injlib.old
    4) Restart the Print Spooler service
    5) Restart the Client32 service
