Finding Windows printers on the network?

If I know the DNS name (or IP address) of a Windows print server on my network is there a command line tool (or tools) that will allow me to query it for information about the printers it serves.... such as printer names and their IP addresses?
Thanks for any pointers you can provide,
Steve

Bump...
I made a little headway on this so I'm hoping someone can help me get a little further down the road. I've figured out that this command:
smbutil view //myUserID@SomePrintServer
will prompt me for my password and then spit out a list of "resources" available on the print server. The list of information includes the print queue names and a short description of each printer.
Can anyone tell me, once I've got the name of one of these print queues, if there is any additional command line utility that will allow me to query some more information about that particular print queue... specifically the IP address of the actual printer?
Apparently if a Windows user set themselves up to print to one of these print queues and then views the properties of the printer they can see the IP address... so I know the information is available under certain circumstances.

  • How do I stop the Finder from seeing SMB (Windows) shares on the network?

I have the OPPOSITE problem most people have -- Windows Sharing works TOO WELL.
I've donated a refurbished eMac to the local homeless shelter. I figured I'd made the system secure, and prevented any monkey business. Turns out the windows machines on the network are COMPLETELY insecure (guest access to everything is enabled). The problem is that the Mac is TOO friendly -- it automatically connects to the server as a guest, and happily presents everything to the user.
I've tried a dozen different things (I've removed the 'Shared' section from the sidebar in the Finder windows (Go->Network is still there, Doh.), tried to turn off File Sharing, and even disabled the mount_smbfs command in the /sbin directory with "chmod 0 mount_smbfs".)
I've asked the folks there to call in a PC tech and fix their security problem -- but it's a good question to which I've found no suitable answer... How to I stop the Mac from connecting to SMB Shares on the local network?
    Thanks.
    -JD.

Same problem, keep getting a pop up with connection failed you do not have permission to access the server. The server is a windows 7 box, Starting happening after an up grade to windows 7. Nowhere can I find how to stop trying to connect. I am sure its at the unix level of samba but what to do is another question

  • Seeing Windows Printers on a Network

Color me frustrated. We were using OS 10.4 with no problems and I had the brilliant idea to change over to 10.5. The first computer I installed had the fated Blue Screen on restart. Well, off to the local electronic store for Firewire so I could hook up my laptop to remove the offending files. That accomplished I installed on a second computer. To my surprise it went okay. Now let's try to print to one of our Windows based RIP's and printer. What!!! No printer is listed in my printers list for this machine. All the other printers on the network are there but not this one. Now why would it get rid of the windows printer but not the others? I call my tech support for this printer. I get the usual, let me find someone that knows more about Macs. Of course I have to call back twice with the same response every time and no return phone call. I call the guy that wrote the software for this RIP (he was foolish enough to give me his number the last time I had a problem). He tried to run through all the possibilities but was busy with a large project and asked if I could check on Apples web site for answers. Well, here I am, hat in hand. Does anyone know what I can do? We had no problem before the new OS. In fact we still had one computer running the old 10.4 OS and it can see the Windows machine just fine. It must be in the new OS. And yes, I did check Epson's (the printer in question) web site and downloaded the correct driver. At least according the them it was correct. It just does not show up in the Windows/workgroup panel of my printers.
So there you have it all you eggheads out there. It seems all the so called experts I have asked cannot tell me anything. Who is man/woman enough to tackle this complex issue. Any Apple experts lurking in the shadows? Afraid to come out into the light of day and confess your sins?
    HEEELLLLPPPPP!

OK then you haveto set it up the way I had to. Go to add printer if it is not there add advanced to the toolbar. Click advanced then type and choose windows. uou will see smb:// type in the windows server name then / then the printer name. You can the gice the printer a name the location if you want. Lastly you must choose a printer driver. There are alot of networking bugs in leapord and I hope they get them woorked out in 10.5.2.

  • Trying to see new windows computer on the network.. but I cant. Help?

I can see the old windows PC on the network just fine. I open up a finder window, click on Network in the upper left hand, and in there click on "Charter" whatever that is (its actually our ISP but I dont know why its in there) and I see the other PC. Both PC's are running WinXP. This Mac is running 10.3.9. I cant figure it out. Any thoughts? Thanks,
    Chris

If you want to see the Network, you need to go into Finder->Preferences, select the sidebar tab and then make sure there is a checkbox next to Computer at the top of the list. After you enable this, your computer's name will show on the sidebar and you should be able to get the Network listing from within there.
I found that I had to turn off the Leopard firewall in order to be able to see machines on the local network. I had previously put it into stealth mode.

  • The files in finder windows all have the same icon

Hi, the files in finder windows all have the same icons. Sometimes the icon will change when I drop a new file in a window. But I have no control over that. Any cue?
    Thanks

I also rebuilt the Launch Services Database. It worked for the icons already in folders (and finder windows), but when I put a file from the desktop in one of these folders, the file does not have the correct icon.

  • Make all open finder windows come to the front?

Things that used to be so simple on the Mac are now so complicated.
I have a bunch of finder windows open. Most of them are hidden behind other application windows, like my browser.
I used to be able to click anywhere on the desktop to make all windows come to the front. No longer. Later, I could do it by mousing all the way over to the Dock and clicking on the Finder icon there. Now even that doesn't work!
How the heck do you simply make all open finder windows come to the front???

DrBeckenstein:What to use in its place though? The utilities of choice for Mac OS X are Tech Tool Pro and Disk Warrior. Both of these pick up where Disk Utility leave off. When DU reports errors it cannot repair, you turn to one or the other of these two. Many Mac users like Disk Warrior for it excellent work in repairing and rebuilding directories. I use TTP because it not only does excellent work with directories, but it also does hardware checks, disk optimization, files checks, eDrive (emergency boot drive) etc. In the long run, though, it is largely a matter of personal preference.
Again, I don't know what maintenance procedures you employ, but our Systems get rather sluggish sometimes as caches fill up, preference files become corrupted, the need for Unix maintenance allow CRONs to build up. Here are a few sites that offer good suggestions and links to resources:
    1. Macintosh OS X Routine Maintenance

I mentioned in my earlier post that if the problem is essentially with one application you can go into Home Folder > Library > Preferences, find the .plis for that application, drag it to the desktop and restart. Check to see if that makes a difference. If it doesn't you can replace the new .plist created with the one on the desktop, or just drag the desktop copy to the Trash.
In your situation I would run Repair Disk from the install CD, then implement some of the suggestions on maintenance.
One other thing to note: a too full HDD can cause problems. If it is over 50% full it could need disk optimization. If have near 85% of available capacity used, you are running a risk not only of compromised performance, but also of directory overlapping and, eventually of a crash.
    Good luck.

  • Os x can't find windows printers

I have a mac mini running os x tiger on a wireless network with windows xp computers (via a Verizon wireless router/modem). One of the xp computers has 2 printers attached. One of the printers was set up under the previous os version (panther?), shows up on the printer list, and prints without problems. But when I try to add the 2nd printer, the printer browser doesn't see it -- when I select "choose more printers", and select the network workgroup in the window, all I see are the computers hooked up to the network, no printers. The browser also doesn't see the printer actually hooked up, either, so if I disconnected it I wouldn't be able to reconnect it. I have confirmed that both printers are on, working properly, and have sharing enabled. I would be very grateful for any suggestions.
    Regards,
    Jack

I'm afraid you've lost me. I'm quite sure I never had to enter an IP address of the XP computer to add a printer; you're supposed to be able to just click on the "add computer" button, and the IP browser is supposed to find it for you. And if I did enter an IP address when I set up the network, I must have gotten it right, since in every other respect the computers find each other just fine. The only problem now is apparently that since I upgraded to Tiger the IP browser no longer finds the printers (even though one is attached and works fine).

  • I keep losing my printers from the network

Yep. This has been going on since I did a full restore to my MacBook. I keep losing the connection to my two wireless printers. I go to print and and the printer que says that the printers are not connected. Then, amazingly enough, they get reconnected, sometimes by themselves and sometimes with me deleting and reinstalling.
BUT, when this happens I find that the other two computers on the network are not affected. So it seems an OS problem. (?)
I am using Time Capsule 2T for network.
    Best,
    Eric

they are downloaded through "media overdrive" and "media on demand", I am therefore assuming they are formated correctly.  I am told that the problem is with the settings, but do not know which settings.

  • How can I set the finder window to open the same way every time?

Everytime I open Finder it goes back to it's default view which is just too small, but I want to set the finder columns and window so that they open the same exact way every single time. I'm tired of resizing everything.
Currently I have to resize every window and column everytime and I think my work is much slower then when I was on Windows because of it.
Is there a setting, script, file, patch, anything, is there absolutely anything I can do to actually control the Finder views and make them adjust to MY criteria and stay that way...

That is a big negative. That does absolutely nothing other then close my window, next time the finder window is opened then the column widths are small again.
In Windows Explorer all your windows are customizable, how do I do this with Finder?

  • Windows computers on the network disappeared from the browser

I own a macbook pro 10.6.4 and in the office we have an imac and 7 windows 7 pc. Till last week I could able to see all the computers on the network under "Shared" and able to connect them. Office printer is shared via one of the pc thats why I cannot add it to use. I can connect them with "connect server" by using their ip or names. Also I can only see imac under "Shared". How can I be able to see all the computers under "Shared" again and add the printer. Thank you.

nothing. all the computers except imac disappeared suddenly. it happened once a couple of weeks again but it lasted like a day.

  • How do I make image icons in finder window previews of the image?

The image icons in my finder window are just generic jpeg icons (they are set to open automatically in Preview). How do I make them previews of the images themselves? When I "get info" on the icon, there is a very nice preview of the image - I would like to see the same quality preview in the icons themselves.
Thank you very much for your help.
    Sam
    Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Hi Sam,
From your Finder "View" menu (without a Finder window open) >> "Show view options" >> do you have "show icon preview" check marked? And with the Finder window open "show icons" and "show preview icons" checkmarked?
EDIT: I may have misunderstood your question. If you're talking about the small file icons, not in the preview frame if you have PhotoShop it should do it with a save as PS file. Otherwise you may be able to paste the image but I'm not sure.

  • Private network issue - Windows 7 machine not restricting Windows 8 on the network

I have 2 machines at my home, a windows 7 home premium and a new machine with windows 8.1.  The windows 8 machine can get to anything, regardless of user account, regardless of directory, including
hidden files and folders, on my windows 7 machines without requiring any kind of authentication.  This is not the case for a 2nd windows 7 machine that I can connect to the same network - it can't see the first windows 7 machine on the network at all.
I've validated that the advanced sharing options on my windows 7 machine are set to the following (in all the network profiles):
    Network discovery is turned off
file and printer sharing is turned off
public folder sharing is turned off
    media streaming is blocked
file sharing encryption is enabled for 40- and 56-bit encryption (to allow a Vista laptop to share files)
password protected sharing is turned on
I'm not using Homegroup, and have ensured that even the names of each not-used Homegroup on each machine is different, and the passwords for each homegroup is different just in case.
I can go to the File Explorer on the windows 8 machine, and in the network section, the windows 7 machine is visible (why since it is not discoverable?).  If I go to Windows Explorer on the windows 7 machine, I get an error message that network
discovery must be enabled for me to view other devices on the network....
From File Explorer on my windows 8 machine, I can select the C: drive on the windows 7 machine, and see any folder, any file without any restriction.  There is no prompt for userid / password, and the userid I'm using on the windows 8 machine
does not exist on the windows 7 machine.  I can READ anything, I can copy any file from the windows 7 machine to the windows 8 machine, but I do get an error message that I need permission from SYSTEM to save some changes directly to the windows 7 machine
(for example, renaming a file in the windows\winSxS directory.
I really want to have the windows 7 machine discoverable so I can get to the windows 8 machine too.  I would like to force userid/password authentication on each machine (both have multiple user accounts) when accessed from a network.  But
my primary problem is the lack of blocking any access from the windows 8 machine to the windows 7 machine....  Any help appreciated.

    Hi,
"I'm not using Homegroup, and have ensured that even the names of each not-used Homegroup on each machine is different, and the passwords for each homegroup is different just in case."
I am confused about this sentence. Did you use HomeGroup on earth?
In addition, I suspect the Windows 7 and Windows 8 computer have the same local administrator user account and password. Both UNC access and Windows log on use the SLA authentication. The LSA handles user logon and authentication on the local computer,
and if the authentication package processing the logon request supports pass-through authentication, the LSA can also log users on to other computers on the network. So, using the same administrator account with same password will bypass the authentication
    in UNC.
Please change the local administrator user password which you used to access the Windows 7 for Windows 8 machine for test.

  • Identifying Physical Printers On The Network.

Acquired account with no cable management documentation and having difficulty physically locating devices on the network via IP address. What are the most efficient tools available that will aid in this effort.

You might need to post this type of question in a different forum.  While you could identify printers using Network Monitor, it's not specifically designed to do that.

  • Finding a printer on the network USB connected to a PC

I have an HP c4400 printer that came with my MBP. I have it connected with a USB cable to a PC that is the main network computer. The network is a WRT54G Linksys wireless router. I do not know how to set up the printer. I loaded the printer software on the MBP and connected via USB cable and it works fine. When I try to set it up as an IP printer, I used the address for the computer it is connected to, but it never finds it. Is there a way to search for aprinter on the whole network?

In Tiger 10.4 that was easy. I would suggest you post your query in the Leopard Printing forum area:
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1224
You realize that the PC must be up and running to print. You might be better off setting up with a print server so each computer can print when it wants to.
