Incorrect permissions on folder mapped from Windows

Hi,
I have a setup with users who authenticate against a Windows AD and then access folders on a Windows 2003 server. Generally this is working, but there is a problem with a write-only folder.
When they try to copy files to that folder it first asks for the administrator password and then says "One or more items can't be copied to <Folder Name> because you don't have permission to read them. Do you want to copy the items you are allowed to read?" It then creates a 0kb file whatever you do. cp from the terminal gives a permission denied error, and also creates a 0kb file.
The permissions on the folder are the permissions of the share, plus
<username> read & write
<domain>\domain users read & write
everyone read & write
Is there any way to get OS X to use the permissions of the share rather than trying to use its own, invalid ones.
Thanks.

You might try unlocking the window and attempt to delete the custom users. Be sure to back up your system before attempting anything.
Highlight the first one and see if you can hit the minus sign to delete it. The system user should be the owner. if you highlight it and click on the triangle at the bottom, it should have "make system the owner" available is it already isn't. If the system user with the Custom priviledges is the owner, you will have to change that first before you can delete it.
You might also try resetting user permissions and see if that helps. This should be the same for ML:
Repairing User Permissions in OS X Lion
You’ll need to reboot to perform this, and then use the same resetpassword utility that is used to change passwords in Lion, but instead choosing a hidden option.
When you use the Disk Utility app and Repair Permissions — it doesn’t actually repair the permission settings on folders and files in your Home folder where your documents and personal applications reside.
In Lion, there is an additional Repair Permissions application utility hidden away. This tool is located inside boot Repair Utilities. Here’s how to access it.
Restart Lion and hold down the Command and R keys.
You will boot into the Repair Utilities screen. On top, in the Menu Bar click the Utilities item then select Terminal.
In the Terminal window, type resetpassword and hit Return.
The Password reset utility launches, but you’re not going to reset the password. Instead, click on the icon for your Mac’s hard drive at the top. From the drop-down below it, select the user account where you are having issues.
At the bottom of the window, you’ll see an area labeled ‘Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs’. Click the Reset button there.
The reset process takes a couple of minutes. When it’s done, quit the programs you’ve opened and restart your Mac. Notice that ‘Spotlight’ starts re-indexing immediately.

All of your TBird mail files are located in ~/Library/Thunderbird/Profiles/XXX.default. The library folder is hidden in Mountain Lion by default. To make it visible open the terminal app in your utilities folder and type "chflags nohidden ~/Library" without the quotes.

  • Windows 7 x64 can't read/install any printer drivers from Windows Server 2003 x64 (AMD64 folder and HP Deskjet 855c)

I read the thread Widows 7 printer
HP deskjet 855c driver about possible installation of HP855c drivers onto Windows 7 x64 from "Windows Server 2003 x64" CD but I didn't have enough luck to succeed with doing it on my laptop. That thread appears to be dead now
as it is marked "Answered", so I'm asking for help here. I have Toshiba Satellite P500 with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (http://i55.tinypic.com/2zgth6v.jpg).
Let me tell you first that I don't have access to Windows Server 2003 x64 or XP Pro 64 CD's. However I did some research online, which eventually forced me to learn about the "file sharing". After extensive search I was able to get the copies
of AMD64 folders from Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard x64 with SP2 and
XP Pro 64. The reason that I went also after XP Pro was because I thought that the extra wording "R2 Standard x64 with SP2" in description of "Windows Server 2003" did not reflect the exact name provided by poster
Alan. I couldn't find just "Windows Server 2003 x64" (does it matter?).
Anyway, I followed first the drill with running "printui /s /t2" and disabling UAC, and then in both cases I was able to locate the
NTPRINT.INF file (http://oi51.tinypic.com/9qwvt2.jpg - this image is from XP Pro AMD64 folder) but each time when I
attempted to install the driver, I got the same message stating:
"The folder you specified doesn't contain a compatible software drive for your device. If the folder contains the driver, make sure it's designed to work with Windows for x64-based systems." (http://oi53.tinypic.com/27yveiw.jpg)
    Why aren't there x64 drivers?
During several installation attempts I had the printer connected to or disconnected from my laptop. It didn't make any difference. I must add that for this purpose I had to use different cable than the original one designated only for the
Parallel port in my old desktop with Windows XP. My new laptop with Windows 7 x64 came only with 3 USB ports (plus 1 HDMI and 1 Serial). Because of that situation I bought in advance a new printer cable called “USB to 36-pin Parallel Port Adapter
Cable” (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003A8I75E). I'm not sure, if it will work until I can install the printer.
Besides, nobody talked about this issue yet. I was also playing with the port choices in "Add printer" step; changing from default LPT1 to USB001 with the same negative results.
I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I was very hopeful after reading positive "case closed" notes there.
Can anyone help me here, maybe by making the necessary files available for download? I'm willing to pay for such assistance or make a donation, if necessary. Seriously. Judging by the large number of views of the original
thread, one could assume that there is a potential demand for such service. It would be more human to pay few bucks for a few driver files than $900 for the whole Windows Server 2003 x64 CD, no? Can Microsoft accomodate me/us, please? :)

I have my HP 855c/driver working on Win 7 Ultimate x64. I used the 'printui /s' procedure and 4 files described above with some minor changes.
I pulled WindowsServer2003.WindowsXP-KB914961-SP2-x64-ENU.exe down from the Microsoft website. Running the file causes the exe to unpack into a temp folder at the root drive. A 'Setup Error' message box is displayed once the file is run. I left this
message box up until I copied ntprint.inf, ntprint.cat, and sp2.cab from the temp folder.
I copied driver.cab from a Windows XP Pro disc. I also needed amd64\stdnames.gpd which was already in my Windows 7 c:\windows\system32\spool\drivers\x64\3 folder.
I created a folder with the 5 files (ntprint.inf, ntprint.cat, sp2.cab, driver.cab, and amd64\stdnames.gpd). This is my 'Have Disc' folder.
I followed the 'printui /s' instructions, first changing the permissions mentioned above and then installing the driver. Next I followed the instructions to add a printer from Control Panel 'Devices and Printers' - 'Add Printer', choosing to 'use an existing
driver' when installing the HP 855c.
I used a slightly different ntprint.inf, size 1570418. The readable contents of ntprint.inf is as follows. Notice the line 'CatalogFile=ntprint.cat' is not included. I tried using the 1570468 version of ntprint.inf; when I did I received an incompatibility
message (probably the same one mentioned above).

  • Possible solution for Windows printing - Incorrect permissions

We have an Epson CX6400 all-in-one printer attached via USB to a Mac.
The printer works fine after having to reinstall most of the print subsystem and drivers when upgrading from OS X 10.3 to 10.4.
We also have some Windows XP and Linux computers.
I'm using Bonjour for Windows XP to print, and prior to 10.3.9, it was working correctly. After subsequent upgrades, printing from OS X would work fine, but not from Windows.
Bonjour configures IPP printing using a generic Postcript driver that in term Mac OS X processes locally using the actual printer driver.
When printing from Windows, the printer queue would stop and I would have to manually delete the print job and restart the queue, before I could print anything.
Trying to figure it out, I checked /var/log/cups/error.log, and I'd invariably see the following when trying to print from Windows XP:
    I [31/Jan/2006:22:49:56 -0500] Started filter /usr/libexec/cups/filter/pstopdffilter (PID 15403) for job 119.
    I [31/Jan/2006:22:49:56 -0500] Started filter /System/Library/Printers/Libraries/PrintJobMgr/Contents/MacOS/PrintJobMgr (PID 15404) for job 119.
    E [31/Jan/2006:22:49:56 -0500] PID 15403 stopped with status 1!
when running /usr/libexec/cups/filter/pstopdffilter manually from the console with what I thought would be the proper command (from the terminal, as root), it didn't die on me, and would rather show me debug information about the fonts being used on the intended document.
    Solution:
(Note: I don't work for Apple and this can potentially create security issues, but it works as intended otherwise).
Using the console, go to /usr/libexec/cups/filter, as follows ($ is the prompt, type AFTER the prompt):
    $ cd /usr/libexec/cups/filter
    $ sudo chmod +s pstopdffilter
Sudo will ask for your password to temporarily gain root access.
This executable (pstopdffilter) is owned by root, so the command "chmod +s" makes the process running this command to run as root instead of whatever user process invokes it.
It shouldn't have to be run as root. Possibly the file/directory where it needs to write to has incorrect permissions.
Again, running these processes as root is not a good idea, and a malformed PS file might make it crash and possibly exploit something else. It's unlikely that this will happen, but just be warned.

  • Cannot access my WebDAV folder from Windows XP

I have an Xserve running Tiger server hosted remotely. It's used primarily as a web and mail server. Today I set up a WebDAV folder on the server and tested it by logging on from my MacPro using the Finder in Leopard. I had obsolutely no problem moving files to and fro, so the permissions would appear to be set correctly. However, when I boot up into Windows using Boot Camp and then try to create a new Network Place, my server won't authenticate the user from Windows. I've tried just about everything I can think of but Windows XP just can't get onto the sever. Does anyone have any idea what I might be doing wrong?

Create new network place with Add Network Place wizard. Even if you are connecting to a default HTTP port 80 specify the port in the address string, and the exact folder: http://example.webdavsystem.com:80/storage/.

  • HFS permissions from Windows 7

I've installed the Boot Camp updates in Windows 7 (x64) and I do indeed have read access to my HFS partition. I notice that you cannot access anything in the Users folder, which makes sense for security purposes however I would rather not put files I need to share in the root of my HFS partition.
What permissions does a folder on the HFS partition need for it to be accessible under Boot Camp? For instance, looking at the applications folder I see that it has "system", "admin", and "everyone" in the permissions list. That folder is accessible from Windows. I've tried adding the everyone permission to another folder within my home folder under Users but the folders don't even show up in Windows. Only the parent "Users" folder itself.
Has anyone had any success working with folders using the new HFS driver in Windows Boot Camp for any folders that are not in the root of the HFS partition?
    Thanks

I can open up the Users folder, but none of the sub folders under that are visible at all. The Applications folder however, I can browse down into the individual .app folders without issue.

  • How to find the folder (EBS_R12) in OEL 5 after copy/paste from Windows 7 ?

    Folks,
Hello. I have just installed Oracle Linux 5 as Guest OS on the top of VMPlayer. Host OS is Windows 7.
I downloaded Oracle E-Business Suite R12 from edelivery into Windows 7 in a folder(EBS_R12) on my LapTop screen.
In order to install EBS R12 into Oracle Linux 5, I copy/paste the folder EBS_R12 into Oracle Linux 5 screen. The file size is about 50GB. After coply/paste is completed successfully, I cannot find where is the folder (EBS_R12) in the Guest OS Oracle Linux 5.
Can any folks tell me where is the folder (EBS_R12) in Oracle Linux 5 after copy/paste from Windows 7 ?

    Hi,
After coply/paste is completed successfully, I cannot find where is the folder (EBS_R12) in the Guest OS Oracle Linux 5.Was the copy/paste successful.
If yes then you can do the following
    #find / -name EBS_R12 -type d -print
(Assuming you copied the folder "EBS_R12" , But not its contents).
    Thanks

  • Unable to map drive to 4100 from Windows

    Hi,
I have a 4100 and I am unable to CIFS map a drive to my NAS from Windows. I can do it fine from a Mac, but my Windows & PC's and 2008 server are unable to map a drive to the Share using the same credentials.
    Am I missing something?
    Thanks in advance,
    Bob

Well I have not found any issues with W7 but.... Server 08 is another story! Since you are joined to the domain, have you verified that the join was "Actually" successful? This is one of those things that just does not make since, but because it is Vista .... err Server 08 Samba ended up being locked out.
What is your FW on the NSS6000?
If possible please post your logs as they can tell us alot, sometimes more than we want. My guess is one of two things, you are trying to access the share from a workgroup computer or we did not actually join the domain. Windows likes to make things easier for the user and will cache credentials, so you may want to log out and back in. Once back, try the map again. If it still fails and you are using domain creds, I bet the NSS did not join. Also, if your domain is something like "mycompany.local" and your domain NetBIOS name is "mycompanyHQ", you will not be able to join to a 2008 server.
    Keep me posted.

Can I move an entire folder (consisting of subfolders and files) from Windows to Mac?

    Mustafafromnc,
if you’re talking about a USB drive, then it will probably have an exFAT filesystem. Modern versions of OS X can read from and write to exFAT filesystems without problems, so you would be able to move Windows folders, subfolders, and files from an exFAT filesystem to an OS X filesystem.

All of the following programs should work with Vista.
Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Another free program is Pod Player.
    SharePod is also freeware.
