Increased digital noise

I've never seen this happen in Aperture. All of sudden, this morning, when export images to Photoshop or to the Dodge and Burn plug-in and make corrections or enhancement, I see a very noticeable increase in digital noise in images after I save the edited images back to Aperture. Anyone know a reason for this? I'm using Aperture 2.1.

Jonathan, thanks for responding. But no I haven't changed anything in Highlights and Shadow adjustments. I use those features in editing photos, but I haven't changed anything that I know of.
I appears that the extra noise is being applied at the start of the export to Photoshop or Apple's own retouch plug-in.
I'm wondering how safe would be to just delete Aperture and re-install it? I have at least two jobs in the current library that need to finish up, so I'm reluctant to delete the application right now.

Deafening Digital Noise After Mixdown of a 5.1 Bus

I'm having some issues that have just cropped up when I try to 'multitrack mixdown' a bus from my film project. This .sesx session originally was imported from a Premiere project. The project is about 90mins in length and I am trying to export multiple 5.1 stems from each 5.1 bus in my project (SFX, VO, Music, etc). I am using the 24bit/48kHz wav format in the export settings.
This worked fine before but has just now resulted in files that consist of crazy 0dBFS digital noise in 2 of the resulting mixdown stems. It started happening after implementing a music ducker that is triggered from the dialogue/VO track... not sure if that would trigger this result or not. Has anyone run into this sort of thing? If so, I'd love to hear the fix!

OK, I disabled and removed the effect I had added and got the same result. I chose 3 busses to export as pictured below:
and here's a shot of the waveform - zoomed in. Thats the shrieking noise I mentioned in the OP. Thanks for the quick response! Hopefully we can sort this somehow.

Digital noise using Apple 10-bit uncompressed codec for NTSC, BIG PROBLEM!

I hope someone from Apple or the Shake team can shed some light on this problem we're having so we can take the appropriate corrective action ASAP to meet our strict deadlines on this current project.
We're compositing all the EFX (over 1000 EXF shots) for a massive video game project that needs to be delivered to the client by the end of May. Let me preface the following comments by saying that overall, we're very pleased with Shake and the end results we're getting, but one problem in particular has us very worried about making our deadline:
The project is entirely bluescreen with CGI plates, shot on anamorphic Digibeta and captured into FCP as uncompressed 10 bit. 4:2:2 through a Blackmagic HD Extreme card (via SDI).
All the 4:2:2 material exhibits (for lack of a better desciption) digital "noise" that runs along the right-hand edge of the video, with frequent drop-out "looking" sparkles that can appear anywhere in the video image. These artifacts ONLY appear when the video clips are imported into Shake, and rendered out of Shake. They play perfectly fine in FCP and QT player.
If we force the FILE-IN node to 8 bit, the problem goes away, but keying suffers - so this is not an option.
The problem ONLY occurs on our Intel Mac's, not on our older G5's. The reason we invested in the Mac Pro's for this project was to reap the performance boost we desired in order to get the project out the door by our deadline, plus the G5's are busy offlining upcoming episodes - so turning the compositing over to the G5's is also not an option.
We're already well down the road, and while we realize that at Shake's current price-point it seems silly to complain at all, we gladly would have paid more for a compositing tool if we knew we were going to run into a situation like this. Unforunately, our initial evaluation of Shake was done on our G5's which don't suffer from this issue.
If anyone from has any recommendation for an efficient way to solve or work around this issue, we'd love to hear from you.

Not sure the exact answer, but some options to try:
1) have you tried converting the clips to image
sequences? Perhaps it's a QuickTime error.
2) How about using 2 FileIns - one at 10 bit to
generate the keys and one at 8 bit for the fill?

We're going to experiment with different codecs and image sequences this week to see what happens.
RE: using different FILEIN's for key/fill, is something I hadn't thought of but unfortunately the 10bit FILEIN would still be affected by the noise which would in turn affect the alpha channel created by Keylight or Primatte.
I'll let you know what we find out as things progress.

G5 Dual 1.8 GHZ Mac OS X (10.4.3) FCP 5.03, STO 1.01

Digital Noise - DVI Port 1 only

Last night one of the two Viewsonic VX910 monitors connected to my G5 went dark and would flicker on for less than a second (showing the correct screen) then blink out. Called Viewsonic and it's under warranty It was in port 1 of the built in AGP card that came with the G5.
Port 2's monitor looked good, so I plugged it into port 1. Anything black or very dark displayed lots of red digital noise - sort of like a TV tuned to a non-channel, but less so and the red noise is only against dark or black backgrounds. All other colors look fine..
Since port 2 was still fine, I assumed the video card was fried by the monitor. I installed a new card (Radeon 9600*) but got the same exact results!
I've run the hardware tests on the G5 from the install DVD. All passed. RAM is good, no discernible hardware failures, etc. Yet the problem persists.
Any ideas? Could the VRAM have gotten friend or corrupted? Or perhaps I might want to reset the PMU? Guess it couldn't hurt, but I don't think that could have done it.

* BTW, the 9600 card would only boot in Safe Mode. It was actually fine until I installed the ATI software. DUH! But apparently, that is a known incompatibility with some G5's - as mentioned in other threads here in the Apple forums.

In the interest of the discussions, I am posting the 'fix' for future campers with this problem.
I changed the refresh rate from 75 to 60 hertz and the noise is gone! I don;t remember setting it there but who knows what the viewsonic monitor decided it wanted to make it;s last request...

Digital Noise Problem on AA 1.5

Adobe Audition 1.5
Lately I have noticed that just by opening a track within Adobe Audition, that process "creates" or embeds digital noise within the song.
I have tested this problem a few times by listening to the song before opening it within Audition. Beforehand, the song plays without digital noise, and after it has been opened within Audition, the noise appears. This digital noise is hard to describe, it's short in length of time, about 1-2 seconds, and will appear at least once within whatever song is being tested.
I uninstalled and reinstalled Audition to see if this would solve the problem, but to my surprise, the exact same digital noise problem remained within the reinstalled version of program. In the past, AA 1.5 has worked okay without this problem.
It's also worth noting that when I reinstalled the program, I successfully entered my program key, and I am "not" running the program in demonstration mode.
I am planning on upgrading to Adobe Audition 3, but the upgrade uses a previous version as a platform on which to upgrade to version 3.
The concern is that this digital noise will "survive" in version 3 of the program.
Thanks for any tips or ways to eliminate the digital noise (besides reinstalling the program), even within Adobe Audition 1.5 for the time being.

The brief digital noise "replaces" or interrupts the song and does not mix together with it.
I have been saving the songs in .wav format.
I operate AA in virtual mode on Windows XP within a Mac computer, and now I have also discovered the same
digital noise on another sound program within a song on the Mac side.

IPhone 5 video recordings have alot of digital noise. Do i need a new phone?

Hi everyone!.
Well i preordered a iPhone 5 and after a few days use i got what was a dead mic and had to get the phone replaced. Apple gladly gave me a new phone but it seems to have developed some sort of issue where any video recording i do seems to have alot of digital noise for some reason. even when the volume is low i still hear the noise but especially when the recorded video is being played a little loud it sounds terrible with the awful noise. What can i do?

Is anyone going to reply?

A60 excessive digital noise from headphone/ouput socket

I have a new A60 (well three or four weeks old) I work in the music industry and need to process music on the laptop. All has been fine until trying to dump to an analogue device from the audio output. The digital noise is incredibly loud! Its there all the time but just touching the mouse pad doubles the ammount of noise.
Through headphones alone its not too noticeable but through a pre-amp, well its just unuseable.
Is there anyway around this or do I need to dump the A60 and buy a ThinkPad?

I have exactly the same problem, but even with headphones it is unbearable. I can't listen to any music without having the volume turned right up. The noise is present at the same level even with the volume thumbwheel turned right down. It also varies depending on what I am doing on the laptop - its loudest when the laptop is idle. I've had the laptop nearly a year, so I think I'll just send it back before the warranty expires. Does anyone know if this is a common fault, or have I just got one that was built on a Friday afternoon ????

Help. Digital noise and CPU spiking constantly.

Ever since I got the latest software update I've been having serious issues. Anytime I try to play a software instrument in Logic Pro 8 or Mainstage I get hellish digital pops and clicks and the CPU spikes up constantly. An error message says there's a conflict with a third party midi driver. I've deleted every suspect midi driver I can find. I tried everything in the trouble shooting guide short of reloading Logic but nothing's worked. I've just been using the built in audio card and it worked great up till this point.
Any ideas? Can I role back the update? I can't seem to find how to do it.

Apple released a Macbook Pro firmware update yesterday.
This firmware update appears to have fixed the large CPU spikes in Apple Logic Pro that began after the last recent Airport software update. Previously, when running Apple Logic Pro even with a small # of tracks with the Airport enabled there was digital noise and one of the CPU peaking very frequently. In order to record or play back with out these issues the only solution was to turn off the Airport. Since I installed the firmware update I have used Logic Pro extensively yesterday recording and playing back projects that previously had this issue and did not have the CPU spiking or digital artifacts.

My 5dmk2 is producing pink/half/digital noise jpg's

My 5Dmk2 just went mental during a shoot, it started producing pink jpg's, and then just digital noise ones, then half normal half pink,..and then a batch of normal ones etc. I know this is not uncommon, does anyone have a definative diagnosis please?

Just tried it, and the phots are fine in both JPG and RAW. but it stopped my shoot earlier, then was fine while i was testing it after, untill I messed with it again an hour ago, and it was all pink and 'digital white/pink' jpg's. I have a wedding in one month, I now cannot trust it not to do this during the wedding. it isnt the CF card, I tried all three of my cards at the shoot. I have shoots planned over the summer too, cant really afford to rent one for three weeks.

5th gen Nano playing songs slower and with some digital "noise"

Recently I have notice my 5th gen Nano playing songs slowere and with digital "noise" when out speed walking with the pedometer on...anyone experience this and know what could be causing it?

I'm also having this issue. It started on Friday. It slowed down my music towards the middle of the song and if I change the song it is OK for a bit and then it gets the digital noise and slows down again. I have no idea what is causing it. My ipod is less than a year old. I'm going to try and reset it tomorrow I think. The trouble is driving me NUTS.

Updated: Firewire audio recording on brand new iMac makes weird digital noise

I am running Ableton Live 8 Suite on a 2011 Entry level iMac. i am using an Maudio Firewire 410 with a FireWire 400 to 800 cable. recently when i record audio (say from a guitar) the audio will cut out and be replaced by a wierd low freq digital noise. i uploaded a clip of it. its not just static. it will come in and out as i play.

Things i have tried:
-different guitars
-Maudio FireWire Solo (different interface)
-uninstalled and reinstalled the driver
-Different firewire cable
-turned off Bluetooth on computer and Bluetooth devices
-turned off airport
when i restart the interface or computer it works for about 5-10mins then cuts out again...
but i still get normal audio through it (iTunes, internet, even Ableton)
it seems to be isolted to just audio input. i had multiple tracks playing in Live. my input was working fine but when it punched in to record it morphed to the weird digital noise.
i could record a single channel fine with nothing else playing but recording with multiple channels playing seems to "lock up" the audio though i am only using 25% CPU...
is this something with my iMac or Lion? i changed out interfaces, cables, and drivers....thats the only thing i can think of…
any thoughts from you smart people out there?

DIgital noise after importing DV from JVC GR-DVL157

I am having difficulty getting clean audio from my JVC GR-DVL157 camcorder .
I have tried toggling the import preference for "filterr audio from Camera"
If I leave this option on, I get drop outs in the audio, and if I turn it off I get digital high pitched "noise" (obviously filtered out when this option is set).
Can anyone give any tips on what to do next?

I don't have a solution, just wanted to say that I have the same problem with my Sony camera, so it is not a hardware issue. I had turned off the filtering because of intolerable frequent sound dropouts, and I could live with the occasional high-pitched click. Since upgrading to 10.4.6, however, the high pitched digital noise is quite annoying, not constant but happening often and unpredictably, affecting both voices and instruments.
I also hope someone has some tips!

HELP! Digital Noise on Converted PAL minidv.

Hi guys
I took my music video project to the post house in Houston Texas and had them convert a NTSC minidv to PAL minidv.
I checked out the video and audio on there deck in PAL format and everything looked fine.
I sent the PAL minidv off to a PAL TV network in Pakistan because that's the tape they wanted it on and they replied that the PAL minidv has a lot of digital noise.
They claim that there decks are clean.
Now, I have a problem!
What should I do?
Can someone please help?
I have got to find a solution for this please!

Hey Zia, it's funny how when it's all said and done - delivery is paramount. If you sent the same (acceptable) tape that you saw, then no, the ZR20 isn't the issue.
They broadcast from a MiniDV tape? It's a very succeptible delivery format, insofar that it's the least 'robust' of the tapes.
Were they specific with their issues? noise all over the screen, or certain areas, how did it sound?
Lastly, and I only say this because it happened to me many years ago - Do you have any way to verify their claims? I directed a spot once, and the client (overseas) claimed it was unuseable and wouldn't pay the producer. Weeks later the producer found that the spot was just fine, and the greasy client banked on nobody on the production team ever seing the spot... Not trying to be accusatory, just covering all the bases.

Apogee Duet & iMac digital Noise in speakers

This has probably been discussed already but I'm gonna add my 2 cents anyway.
Here's the setup. iMac with Apogee Duet using logic pro.
Powered speakers connected to the Duet with balanced cables.
60hertz noise floor problems not a factor.
With this setup I kept getting this medium hi pitched digital noise from my
speakers when the iMac was on and the Duet was connected to the firewire 400 port.
If I put the iMac to sleep then I would get a low pitched kind of digital gargle.
If I shut the iMac down I would still get the same low pitched kind of digital gargle.
If I ran the same setup off my MacBook Pro and ran it thru the paces i got no digital
noise of any.
After reading some other post about this issue over the past few days I decided to
try what others suggested even though it was hard to believe. I tried it because I
decided shut down the iMac and unplug it just to see what would happen.
When I did the noise went away.
So here's the answer. I bought a three prong to two prong converter. You know
one of the things you use to plug into a receptacle that isn't 3 prong. .75 cents.
I then plugged the iMac into the converter which in effect eliminates the ground.
I then plugged the iMac into the receptacle turned on the computer and you guessed
it. "NO NOISE". no noise at all period.
If you already knew about this then your good to go. If you didn't then there you go.
I didn't believe it when I read it but It really does work.

I am getting a 1 KHz whine through Behringer Truth monitors using M-Audio USB Fast Track Ultra audio/midi interface with an iMac i5 27-inch with LED monitor. The whine occurs continuously from the moment I open Logic Studio or iTunes, when the output is routed through the Fast Track Ultra. The whine does not occur when I use the imac output to imac's speakers. I also get an electronic scraping noise when I use the blue tooth connected magic mouse. I have installed ferrites on the monitor speaker wires with no reduction in the whining noise or electronic scraping noise. I have also ordered the USB with ferrite collar to see if the connection between audio/midi interface and the imac is the source of the noise. I am considering a Hum-X, as well, but I am getting into serious money taking stabs at a problem for which there ought to be plenty of competent technical support. The fact that this whine is at 1 KHz and not lower suggests that I am not suffering a typical ground loop. I am a former Pro Tools user who never had a hum or whine from my Digi and G4, which I am seriously considering recomissioning so I can make music again. I am spending way too much time and money making educated guesses and trying to diagnose a problem that all but kills the utility and purpose of this new system. I too am calling on all great engineers to step up with a diagnosis and solution.

Increased fan noise, CPU temp and random fan rpm bursts when using Leopard

I have a 2.2 Ghz Macbook Pro that I purchased in August 2007. I was running OS X Tiger on my mac till about a week ago when I decided to upgrade to OS X Leopard. Ever since the install, I've been facing numerous problems and issues with the general functionality of the computer. Specifically, the biggest issue relates to increased fan noise and random bursts of increased fan rpm (as monitored using iStat). I did not have any of these issues when using OS X Tiger. Further upgrading to 10.5.1 wasn't helpful either as it did not resolve the issue.

It may be worth running the Apple Hardware Test, just in case you have a sensor going out or something like that. Sometimes and upgrade will cause an underlying problem to make itself known.
Did you do an Upgrade as opposed to an Archive and Install or an Erase and Install? If so, there could be some software problem associated with the issues you are having. I tried an Archive and Install, and had so many issues that I went ahead and did an Erase and Install. I've had no problems since.
