Increased SPAM

Recently, I have experienced a very large increase in SPAM with my Verizon account.  I used to get very little.  Today, I got 2 pieces of real mail and 13 pieces of SPAM.  I have activated the Verizon "Spam Detector", but it doesn't seem to be very effective.  I used to just download all my messages with a POPmail client, but now I am afraid that malware might sneak onto my computer.  Lately I have been accessing my Verizon email account on the web.  The SPAM messages seem to go right to my Inbox instead of to the "Spam Detector" folder.  I have to mark each piece of SPAM individually and then shift all those messages to the "Spam Detector" folder so I can delete them en masse.  Then I can use my POPmail client to download the real messages.
This is very different from my "gmail" account, which has a very good SPAM detector.  The SPAM messages never make it to my inbox.  If I didn't check the SPAM folder periodically, I would never see those messages.  The program very rarely makes a mistake, and if does, it is always on the side of caution - it occasionally puts a real message in the SPAM folder, but never puts a piece of SPAM in my Inbox.
Is there any way to make Verizon's SPAM detector more like that of gmail, or anyway much more effective than it is now?  It is really a pain if I have to make a list of SPAM email addresses, rather than if Verizon has a real SPAM detection program.
Thanks for any help you can give me.

I've been getting overwhelmed by spam in the last few weeks too.  It's not that I'm getting more spam, the problem is that Spamdetector has gone from stopping about 50% to stopping less than 5%.  Since it also mistakenly stops about 5% of valid emails it's now totally useless.
This is very frustrating since my phone email account is now also getting useless because of all the spam.  I use Outlook at home which does a decent job on the garbage Verizon lets though.  (Although I recently switching from Outllok 2007 to 2013 and the 2013 spam filter is a lot worse than the 2007 version, and I'm thinking about switching back to 2007.)
I agree with those who think something has happened to the Verizon servers.  Maybe I'm getting paranoid but I've been wondering if spammers have penetrated verizon and sabotaged the servers.
I could switch ISPs to Time Warner Cable.  Does anyone know if the Time Warner spam filters work better than Verizon's?

  • Why increased spam in email?

First of all, apologies for posting this here but I didn't find the 'Apple Mail' section that I seem to remember used to be previously available in Support.  (right?)
I've had a significant increase in spam in the last couple of weeks.  From a couple a day to now approaching ten-fifteen a day. Might there be some action I have taken that would open me to more spam?  I can't think of anything unusual I've done.
I googled this topic and didn't find any straightforward answers.  Is Spam Cop recommended?

Apple Mail does identify 'junk' ... which I then have to delete.  But there are about as many that are obvious 'junk' that Apple Mail does not identify.  I mark those as 'junk' and delete them.  AM I INCREASING Apple Mail's ability to recognize junk when I do that?
And is the 'junk' designation the same as "Apple Mail's spam catcher" referred to by Barry, above?
Could you point me to some of the more obvious sources of spam?  This increase is significant and only in the last couple of weeks.  I'm guessing I entered my e-mail address on some list that I should not have ... and now one spammer is sharing my address with others.  Likely?

  • Increase in SPAM web form submissions

    Hi,
I'm noticing a trend of increased SPAM web form submissions across most  of our BC sites. This has got particularly bad in the past week or so. All SPAM submissions follow a very similar theme. The text is complete 'gobbledygook' basically! The forms being used don't have any description fields where long descriptions or links can be entered so I struggle to see why this is happening.
What I want to know is:
    - is this something other BC partners are noticing, particularly recently
    - are your SPAM submissions similar to what I have shown below
    - what can we do to reduce these other than using CAPTCHA on all forms?
    - we exclusively use BC but I would be interested to know if the BC platform is particularly bad for SPAM submissions or is this something all sites are suffering from nowadays?
    - any other light you could shed on this issue or advice you could impart would be much appreciated
    Real submission example:

    Surname: tjlavseb

    Hi there,
We are experiencing a high volume of spam since changing our web forms on our newly redesigned site. The objective of the site design was to make it quick and easy for clients to get a quick quote thus asking for only a few fields to be completed. Adding a captcha form would actually detract from the purpose of the form.
    We have implemented the honey pot field which seems to have made little to no difference in volume (this seems to be the case for this fix across many other users of BC). The problem is with our spam is quite unusual whereby we are not getting any specific info from them really making it hard to detect if it is spam or real. See example;

  • Missing Bcc: functionality in Tiger Mail--and worse: no Bcc: button!

    MISSING IN ACTION!
Pre-Tiger, if you wanted to include a bunch of Bcc: addresses from your Address Book within Mail you could double-click each one from the mini Address Book window IF YOU HAVE THE CURSOR in the Bcc: field.
Even worse is that since Mail's inception in 10.0x, only To: and Cc: appeared as buttons! Conspicuously absent: a Bcc: button!
With ever-increasing spam, and privacy needs, anyone who sends to groups of people who may not know each other in the To: field is committing a terrible breach of privacy (exception: friends & family, etc.). Hopefully, one or more of those recipients would have have taught the "offender" how to use Bcc:.
Anyway, I was on the phone with Tech Support from Apple and they are finally "on the case." Level II and III techs actually had to fiddle with Jaguar and Tiger Mail to reproduce my problems, which is amazing that nobody [here] has escalated the issue very far. Their database was devoid of these problems!
Let's hope a Mail update is on the way shortly! We shouldn't have to wait for 10.4.5 for such an easy fix (the Bbcc: button at least).

If you have a problem, think about it. There is a wonderful little menu item on almost all applications called "Help". I have found it gives me the answer to about 99% of my problems. Mail "Help" provides the answer to your problem:
"To send email to more than one recipient, type the addresses, separated by commas, in the To or Cc (carbon copy) fields.
To send someone a copy without other recipients knowing, type the person's address in the Bcc (blind carbon copy) field. (If the Bcc header is not showing in your email message, choose View > Bcc Address Field.)
To have the Bcc or Cc header appear in all emails you send, open a new message window, choose Customize from the Action pop-up menu in the lower-left corner of the address area. Select the checkbox next to the items you want to appear in your new message headers.
To send to a group of people, create a group address in Address Book, then use the group address in your email instead of the individual addresses. See Address Book Help for more information on creating a group.
If you want your recipients to reply to a different address from the one you are using to send the email, choose View > Reply-To Address Field, then add the address."
I trust this has been helpful.

I would love to be able to source my IT purchases ethically as in all the goods that I buy to resell to my clients - my inventory. However, because I am a small company, with limited (very limited) time at my disposal, I feel that I would cutting my nose off to spite my face if I spent my time trying to source ethically as I need to be competitive in price, but more importantly I need to have confidence in the products that I sell. • How do you block a caller

How do you block a number?

    Hi Steve359,
Why should I be required to take time away to go to Verizon's website when all this could be handled locally on the phone taking only a few seconds of time.
    1. When people say block a call, many times they are just trying to block spam or wrong numbers. If it's persoanl issue or threats then yes have Verizon step in if legal action is need it's the user that initiates this. My suggestion is not meant for those in that situation.
    2. Verion, per your notes above, is limited to 5 numbers blocked and you need to renew. Again have the Iphone software handle the users preference which typcially is just ignore the number. I've gotten over 4 spams in Nov. alone as I use my phone for biz and life in general. I expect even more in December with all the holiday spammers gearing up. I can hear them buying server hardware on Cyber Monday deals just to increase spam capacity for Xmass hahaha hohoho.
    3. If you get a text message from spammer, allow the user would have to do is identify it as spam and send to a junk or spam folder. Keep tabs of the number and any text or Vmail for later. Let user decide what length to hold it or delete it instantly.
    4. Many spammers roll through phone numbers quickly so the numbers are constantly changing. Handle this in software so you do not limit users to what the carrier limits. Many of the Do Not Call laws were created from results of court cases and protection of individuals so why depend on that system for simple spam? Spam is a growing problem and you need to update how you handle it.
If you do it on the iphone, I get the feeling that Apple is not interested in adding this type of feature, you are not limited to 5 every three months, you don't have to renew, and the user gets more control and options. Something like this would help.
    1. Once a text comes in that is spam, send it to spam folder. That number and message is stored on iphone.
User can indicate ignore all messages, Note I'm not saying block!!!!!, the message is saved until deleted just in case "Do not call List or legal or carrier action is needed and you need to show proof" Next tiem spam is sent from that number it'll automatically go to that folder.
    2. Incoming calls handled same way, allow user to indicate if they get rings from spam folder or if no action is needed. Keep it stupid simple! Note a time in the recent call list and indicate it was spam.
So the question I have, why go through the hassle of calling carrier when Apple should have a spam option in the software? Let the carrier and legal system handle the bad stuff and let Apple handle the easy spam filtering.
True blocking calls should go to carier while spam should be handled by the user preference via software.

  • Unwanted E-mail

    Hello,
I am receiveing about 6 or more e-mails a day from people promoting penny stocks. I reply to these e-mails to ask to be taken off their mailing list and the e-mails come back as un deliverable. I have flagged these as junk and they go in that file, however, these nuts are sending these from new fake e-mail addresses every day. So, every day I have to mark at least 3 more as junk.
Can any thing be done about this?
    M Haver

I reply to these e-mails to ask to be taken off their mailing list
and the e-mails come back as un deliverable.
This is a common mistake made by those unfamiliar with how spammers operate but you should not reply to spam messages (especially since the email address or reply to address provided is not valid) and never, under any circumstances select a link included with a spam message such as "click here to be removed from our mailing list".
By selecting any links included with a spam message reveals to the spammer that your email address is valid or "known good" causing even more spam to be received. Spammers trade/sell known good email addresses to other spammers creating a cycle of ever increasing spam messages received.
The same for automatically rendering all HTML received. When a spammer's message is formatted in HTML and includes any embedded images or objects that must be rendered from a remote server to be viewed and these are rendered, you are revealing to the spammer that your email address is valid or "known good".
If you automatically render all HTML and a spam message is correctly marked as Junk when received, then no included embedded images or objects will be rendered as a security feature but if such a message is not marked as Junk when received, then is it very likely you have revealed to the spammer that your email address is valid.
Go to Mail > Preferences > Viewing and deselect "Display remote images in HTML messages".
When deselected and a valid message received includes embedded images or objects that must be rendered from a remote server to be viewed, there is a Load Images button provided on a blue border just above the message header. This will protect you in case a spam message is received that is not marked as Junk and includes embedded images or objects that must be rendered from a remote server.
Check Why was I "spammed" at my .Mac Mail address? which applies to any email account and Mac OS X Mail: How HTML Email Messages Relate to Unsolicited Commercial Email ("spam") which applies to any email client such as the Mail.app.
Does your ISP or email account provider include an email address to forward spam received with long message headers shown for the received message?
My ISP includes such an email address and since the sender's computer IP address is usually provided in the long message headers for the received message, after my ISP confirms the forwarded message with long message headers shown for the received message is spam and the sender's computer IP address can be determined (which is usually the case), my ISP blocks the sender's computer IP address at the incoming mail server from being able to send messages to any email address in my ISP's domain.

  • Recent increase in spam through iCloud?

For many years my emails received through Apple Mail via iCloud have been virtually spam-free.  I put this down to excellent filtering by Apple and my own care.  Although my domain name is public and used on my web site, I use a different name in front of the @ for each organisation I deal with:  [email protected] or [email protected] etc.  The aim here was to limit damage should one of these emails leak out.  About once a month I would get a spam email.  At first I wondered whether the organisation had leaked it, but I now believe spammers are random-guessing strings in front of a known domain.
In the last couple of months I have seen a huge increase in the spam reaching me - many per day, all addressed to a random selection of my hundreds of email addresses.  I still think these are spammers hitting it lucky with randomly generated strings in front of my domain name.  But why the sudden increase?  Has Apple's anti-spam team  fallen asleep on the job?
I used to forward spam to [email protected] but I have given up on that.  I read somewhere that marking a message as spam (well Junk actually) was sufficient for Apple to take note.  Is that sufficient?
There used to be an option in Apple Mail to bounce an email.  That went a while back.  Without any bounce option, spammers may be able to deduce an address is valid by the lack of a bounce.
    Any comments or advice welcomed.

If the spam is coming to your domain email there's nothing that Apple can do as it comes directly from your hosting service  mail servers to your Mac. Contact your website hosting service regarding filters.
Apple can only help if your email address ends in iCloud.com, mac.com or me.com.

  • Increase in email spam lately

I would say in the last week, we have seen an increase in random spam coming through our IronPort C160.  We are on async version 7.6.0-444.  It seems in the message logs quite a few get out there with random.  My boss just got 3 pieces of spam mail in the last 10 minutes.  Here are our the settings in anti-spam.

Ok I altered the values to 80 and 40 respectivly, and also slightly altered the SBRS score ranges for blacklist, throttled and allowed.  Our CIO still got another piece of spam.  I had him install the Ironport outlook plugin and report it as spam.
How can we stop this from getting in?

  • Increase in spam?

Has anyone else had an increase in spam since getting their ipod Touch?
Before I got my ipod touch I was getting almost no spam. Since I got it, registered with Apple and downloaded apps for it, I get up to 200 pieces of junk mail a day - to my alternate email address.
My daughter had the same thing happen after she registered her Macbook with Apple.
Am I the only one who had this happen?
    Thanks

    Hi,
As the title suggests, Ive had a sudden increase in spam on my .me account.
    Its gone from 1 a week to 2 a day, then 5 & now its upto 30 spam a day & there
all from what looks like normal companies ( i know there not though)
Ive even installed spam sieve which works fine but I still have to check it
    evey day.
    Any suggestions welcome.
    Kindest,
    Jeff

Forward the spam to [email protected] so Apple can adjust their junk mail filters.

  • What's with the increase # of SPAMS recently??

All of a sudden (seema to have coincided with Leopard's introduction)...I'm getting 10 + spams daily ....prior to this I might get a ramdom spam one or two times a week....has anyone else experienced an increase in SPAM....and are there mail filters you can recommend?
Currently I send to JUNK anyone who is not in my address book but it seems to be increasingly more difficult to restrict the number of DISGUSTING spams I'm getting.

If you've got a Gmail account, you can try routing your mail through there--their spam filters are excellent and catch nearly everything. They've also got a built-in POP checker that you can configure to download mail from your ISP or other POP account.

What mail program are you using???  Who's your provider???
You can usually log in to your account and make changes to spam filtering, server side.
Client side you can add spam filtering software like SpamSieve.  Very effective.

  • Noticeably increased amount of spam with Ironport

    Hello,
We are using Ironport C170 for several clients. All the clients have a lot more untagged spam emails during last two weeks. Is it expected? Maybe there is some new known bot-net activity on the Internet?
    Thanks,
    Nikolay

    Hello Nikolay,
bot activities should not result in the numbers of spam increasing significantly, of course at the beginning of a campaign there will always be something slipping through, but this should not be a permanent issue. I'd suggest that you check your system monitor, in the inbound section the number of messages blocked by reputation filtering should be in the 85 to 90 (or higher) range, if not then maybe there is something wrong.
Also, use message tracking to figure out which sendergroups the missed spam has been hitting, often the reason for that is a host that is whitelisted in the HAT and does not get scanned by IPAS.
    Hope that helps,
    Andreas

  • An increase in SPAM the last two days

It seems like there was a big increase in SPAM in the last two days, not caught by Verizon/Yahoo. A lot of it came from panda-mail.com. I put a filter to block panda-mail.com, but the SPAM keeps coming. Is something not working with Verizon/Yahoo SPAM blocking?
