Incremental back up

I have windows 7 and photo shop 10.  I was wondering if when I do a back up in increments to I make a new destination folder every time?
Thanks, Janice

Being that the parameter inctype=incremental appears in the text then I take it that this is an incremental export rather than an incremental backup. Exports are not really database backups and it is best to be clear on what you are doing if you want help.
What full versions of Oracle were/are in use on the old system and the new one?
Oracle9i Database Error Messages Release 2 (9.2) Part Number A96525-01 >>EXP-00041 INCTYPE parameter is obsolete
Cause: Export encountered the INCTYPE parameter when parsing Export options. Incremental Exports are no longer supported.
Action: Consult the Oracle9i User-Managed Backup and Recovery Guide. Export will attempt to continue.

  • Where is the .tly file following a FULL backup so that I can do an INCREMENTAL back up next time?  I can't find it in the catalog folder.

I do a FULL back up of the Catalog to my C drive so that it gets copied onto my external back up drive with automatic back up software.  But when I try to do an INCREMENTAL back up next time I cant find the .tly file for the previous back up path.

    Hello stoneape,
What happens when you try to synchronize using Desktop Software? Do you receive any error messages?
How are you certain that you are currently enabled for wireless syncronization?

  • TC says it and it will not do incremental back up.

TC says it needs 73mb but only 62mb available and it will not back up. I thought it would do incremental back up.  It has been working fine for several years without any issue.  I recently upgraded to ML from SL opt. system but that was several weeks ago.  Do you think I need to wipe it clean and do a completely new back up or have I truely run out of disk space?  How can I tell?

As a final request can you send me steps as to how to erase TC and start over.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the TC icon, then click Edit in the next small window that appears
Click the Disks tab at the top of the next page
    Click Erase Disk
The Quick Erase option will only take a minute or two and will be fine if you plan to keep the TC for your own use. If you are not planning to keep the TC, then use the Zero Out option to securely erase the disk.

  • Getting (incrementally) backed up files from external HD to new mac

    Hi everyone,
The hard drive on my ibook died. I was running Tiger, and regularly backed up all the files on my home folder to an external hard drive. I use the software that came with the computer (Backup) to do this.
Yesterday, I purchased a MacBook. When I attach my external hard drive and try to open my backed up files, all I see is one full backup folder and many, many incremental backups. I understand, on a conceptual level, what incremental backups are. But I have no idea how to use them to retrieve my files.
So, my question is this: how do I retrieve files that were backed up to an external hard drive (from my old computer) and transfer them to the internal HD on my new computer? Migration assistant is absolutely no help here since I can't access the internal HD on my old, dead ibook.
    Many thanks for any tips,
    RB

If you used Backup to create the backup, then use it to restore the files.

  • Large incremental back-ups on time machine

Since the last system update (10.10.3 (14D136)) last week, my time machine has started making large hourly back-ups. They seem to be between 100mb and 500mb per hour which is far more than any files I have changed or downloaded. Normally the time machine finishes in about 5 minutes, but its pretty much going continually now. I generally work with documents and office stuff in pages, keynote etc, not with huge images or video so there is no way I can be so productive!
At first I thought it might just be the system update from last week, having changed a lot of files, but I would expect that to be over after a day or two. This seems now to be a pattern, and its causing problems by eating my wi-fi bandwidth.
Anybody have any ideas as to why the incremental hourly back-up is so large every time? How can I find out which files are changing?
    Regards from sunny Scandinavia
    SimonC
I use a macbook air, from Spring 2014

Can you explain your observations that lead you to believe the weeklies do not work? Monthly? I don't think there is a monthly "stash." It's hourly for 24 hours, daily for one month, and weekly until disk is full.
I'm looking back at my archive and it seems to have logical date-time stamped folders. The weeklies do not continuously adjust day-by-day based on the end date of the one-month daily backups. If the oldest weekly backup is 1 March, the next oldest is 8 March, and then 15 March. Those dates will not change.
I don't know technically how Time Machine merges the backups.

  • External iPhoto Libraries and Incremental Back-ups?

Any recommendations on best way to go external with iPhoto libraries?

    I assume that what you really need is some form of keeping the photograph folders on your internal hard drive in sync with the folders on your external hard drive (the catalog itself can be backed up from within Lightroom). This downloadable little utility works for me when I want to keep my spreadsheets, letters, iTunes files ...etc... backed up;
    http://www.goodsync.com/download/update
It's nothing to do with Lightroom. You first set up simple jobs within the utility, telling it which folders on your internal drive should be backed up to which folders on your external drive. It will then run, and copy to the ehd any items in the source folder that have changed since the last sync. Then, if your internal hard drive fails, you can copy these folders and catalogs from your ehd to the replacement hd, using the original folder structure.
In Lightroom, the catalog is the main organisational tool, rather than the folder. I let LR decide on it's own folder structure, because I never refer to my RAW files outside of LR. Hope this helps.

  • Incremental back ups to external hard drive and importing to new computer

I need some clarification on precisely how to back up additional pictures on a PC to an external hard drive to keep all the pictures in the same catalog and folder structure.I have exported my existing catalog (exporting the negative files and including the previews) to an EHD to a folder I have created called My lightroom Photos.Within this folder there are three sub-folders:(1)My Lightroom Photos previews.irdata, (2) My Lightroom Photos.lrcat LRCAT file and (3) Pictures (which contain copies of all the subject folders I have created on import-the original pictures being retained on the computer hard drive). When LR opens you have the option of backing up the alterations to pictures in an EHD (but not the pictures themselves). So if some alterations in the develop module are made, these are backed up as a fourth sub- folder on the EHD with the date recorded. However,if certain pictures are added to Lightroom following the earlier catalog export, how can these pictures together with the alterations be added to that same exported catalog with pictures added to various established folder names -eg France, Italy etc? LR is currently set to back up to the parent folder-My Lightroom Photos.
Secondly, I believe that to import the catalog into LR on a second computer, all that is necessary is direct LR to open the last dated LRCAT file from My Lightroom Photos folder on the EHD.However,my last backed up "fourth" LR folder only imported two grayed out images with no previews visible.
    Any advice would be appreciated.

  • Time Machine hangs...  Takes hours to do an incremental back up

    Hello All,
I'm having trouble with Time Machine as of late. It seems to hang and not finish a backup (I'm not talking about the initial back up, I know they take a while).
I leave my MBP running all the time (fans are on to keep it cool, over heating not an issue) and I've noticed that after the 4th day all bets are off on a reliable backup. Usually it waits till the 2 week mark then freaks out but now it's happening more often and sooner.
I'll refrain from expressing my opinion as the Apple people don't seem to like freedom of speech as my last post got flagged when I expressed my displeasure with Snow Leopard. I'm having a lot of problems that I didn't have before the upgrade.
To the Apple people, THIS IS A REAL ISSUE I'M HAVING; note the opening statement explaining my problem. Please don't remove my post again unless you're going to contact me with how to fix it. This should not be considered "Feed Back" as I'm asking my fellow OSX users for help. Thank you!
Thank you for any advice or tips on how to fix the problem.

Your best bet is to omit opinions, especially negative ones. Mainly because they don't help us help you. And if they don't get deleted, many of us who try to help people just skip them, as the posters often are more interesting in ranting than working through a problem. And "freedom of speech" doesn't apply here -- this is not a government throwing you in jail, it's Apple saying you agreed to certain terms and conditions when you signed-up to use the forums they provide at no cost. Like it or not, those are the rules.
That said, you can use the Time Machine Buddy to navigate back a few days in your logs. Use the small navigation arrows after the title "Messages;" the arrow in front will show or drop the message detail. If you can find the most recent backup that was a problem, copy and post the messages here.
Do the sizes of the backups seem reasonable, considering what you've added or changed since the last one? If they seem too large, that may be part of the problem. See #D4 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip* at the top of this forum.
You might also try the things in #D2 of that Tip.

  • HT1688 Why does when they upgrade my phone they turn on Icloud stuff I did not have and wiped out my phone contacts, but after it did that it took another back up and I could not get my contacts from backup unless I go back sept , why not incremental back

recent upgrade I lost all my contacts, I only had icloud for find my phone. My son backs his contacts up to my id, so when the upgrade happen it wipped out my contacts. I had been doing backups on my computer when I plug it in. But the problem is that it overlays the previous backup and after the upgrade it wiped out my phone contacts. So now I lost them and can not recover them. You need a more robust backup for IPhone.... I can not use the cloud because of my work will not let me. I have confidential information or access to it on my phone. I do not like each time I upgrade I lose my contacts and then I can't recover them because the backup runs again and overlays it. Should be a way to get increamental backups at point and time and not overlay everything. So frustrating with my upgrades and constantly losing my contacts. Very insufficent.

I think you can solve your problems by removing your AppleID email address from BOTH the Messages setting on your iPhone and the iMessages settings on your Mac.
    On iPhone:
    Settings > Messages > iMessage > Dissabled
Settings > Messages > Send & Receive > touch the "(i)" < touch "Remove This Email"
    On Mac:
    Open "Messages" application
    Click "Messages menu > Preferences
    Click "Accounts"
    Select your AppleID account
Under the "You can be reached for messages at" settings, uncheck your AppleID email address and your phone number
Then uncheck the "Enable this account" setting
And lastly, ask all of your friends with iPhones to delete all iMessage conversations (blue bubbles) in their entirety.
To test, send a friend a new text using their phone number (not their email address) and watch the color of the bubble.  If it's green then you are using SMS.

  • Time Machine won't back up incrementally

    Hi there,
Here's my situation.  Using a Mac Pro, Snow Leopard 10.6.8.  (still SL because I have a solid FCP7 set up and don't want to mess with it at the moment).
I've used Time machine successfully with one large 6TB backup external hard drive. But recently, since I don't have enough space on that one drive to back up all my other drives, I decided to try to use a second backup that I would dedicate to backing up just one large drive with lots of large media files.  So I backed up eveything else  on original backup1 except that drive....then connected the other backup2...chose that as my backup disc in TM, excluded all other drives (including my system hard drive) and let it fly.  It seemed to work, but now when I try to use backup2 to incrementally backup it wants to backup that WHOLE drive again and says "there's not enough space on the backup drive", so it won't proceed. When I look on the backup2, I do see the backup folders, and the files are in there...I just hope to do an easy incremental backup of this drive from time to time.
I tried some recommend troubleshooting and deleted the com.apple.TimeMachine.plist file...but after restarting, rechoosing that drive as the backup drive, excluding the others, it still won't incrementally back up the drive that I needed to be backed up.   Still says, "Not enough space".
Now, I'm not sure if switching between drives is even possible..seems like it should be.  You'd think many people would have this problem of their backup drive not being big enough to handle everything and want to split it up ( i understand Mavericks makes this easier).  But I really can't update the OS at the moment and am looking for solutions or ideas as to how to work this out.  Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, even a third party backup recommendation if necessary.
    scott

Time Machine, especially the version on Snow Leopard, isn't made for splitting backup duties across volumes. Even on Mountain Lion, where you can use multiple target drives, they each back up the entire group of source drives. I haven't tried Mavericks yet, but I understand it is similar to Mountain Lion in this respect.
You could use Time Machine to back up everything but your large media file drive into the 6TB drive and use another utility to back up the large media drive onto another external volume. Carbon Copy Cloner, for example, has an incremental backup mode.

  • Back up plan

We have an xServe and xRAID with 2 3.7TB RAID 5 drives.
One of the drives is used for production work. I would like to have an incremental back-up made on the other drive. In the past we used Retrospect to back up files to tape but then you are forced to use retrospect to unarchive the files. We want to keep the files online and access the back-ups directly in the finder and use spotlight to search.
It had been suggested that we mirror the 2 drives but that would slow down reading and righting. I laso am hoping to have the back-up be incremental and done at night or when the drives are not being used for production.
    Suggestions?

    Frozen Tundra-
One of the advantages of RAID 5, especially if you have spare drives, is that your "backup" exists in real time. Lose a drive and no big deal just plug in another one and you can rock. So in that respect you already have your backup online and available. But this does not guard against a catastrophe.
The only way to backup correctly is to have at least one set of backup tapes or drives rotated and stored securely off-site at all times. There is nothing wrong with the retrospect route if you can do this already.
You could put a server and RAID in another facility and back up to that over the internet.
I don't think you want to "mirror" the two RAIDS, but you could set up one of the RAIDS as a mirrored array. I guess I don't exactly understand the point of the incremental backups being available locally. Perhaps a little clarity would help.
    Luck-

  • HT201250 Can I back up multiple volumes using Time Machine on Snow Leopard?

I have a fault with my time machine software where it is no longer able to perform incremental back ups of the volumes (partitions) I have created on my internal hard drive - every attempt results in a full back up. However incremental back up of the Mac HD is working. I have had it working perfectly in the past. I'm backing up to a dedicated external hard drive.
I have just been told by an apple support manager that Time machine on OS 10.6.8 is not designed to back up multiple volumes (partitions) on my internal hard drive, only the current Mac HD drive - is this correct? He said it shouldn't be backing up the other volumes and the reason it is doing so and has done so in the past is because of bug!
Surely this is not the case?

I would read and try this.  Pondini is very knowledgeable about Time Machine:

My iPhoto won't open. It says "Your photo library is either in use by another application or no longer readable." Please tell me I haven't lost all my pics?! I do not have them backed up. I have tried restarting my mac. Please Help!

What haven't you backed them up? You should always have a back up of any important material on your Mac. Make one now:
    Most Simple Back Up
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
    Slightly more complex:
Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically. Examples of such apps: Chronosync or DejaVu . But are many others. Search on MacUpdate
What version of iPhoto do you have?

  • System-wide freeze when Time Machine begins back up - Mac Pro 10.7.5

I  have recently upgraded my MacPro Intel Early 2008 to Lion 10.7.5 on an external drive. Overall this nice fresh install has been working very well. The problem is that every 2 hours Time Machine starts its automatic back up and then ...
    A) Music playing on Spotify stops
    B) Curser freezes
    C) Application switching freezes
    D) Current app stops working
This freeze typically lasts about 15 to 30 seconds, or until the small incremental back up is finished.
I have verified the cause using the Console and reading the activity. I read the log 4 times yesterday (it has been doing this since I upgraded a week ago) to confirm this activity. Usually the log reports the begin and finish of the backup with no activity in between, but in the freeze I just had there was activity in the middle relating to Spotify. That most recent log is shown below. For the record, nearly all of the log activity is something to do with Spotify unless I am doing some other system level process.
I have studied other threads, but the symptoms don't really match those, or I don't have the same suspect apps installed. I have run Disk Utility and Disk Warrior on the Time Machine internal drive, and it appears ok. In energy settings the hard drive disks are NOT set to sleep when possible, but the computer will sleep after an hour of inactivity.
My Time Machine is getting large and using some 90% of the disc. I think I need to redo it because the old (10.5.8 & 10.6) and new system (10.7) inadvertantly wrote to the same TM backup. Thoughts on that?
Here is the last freeze (I truncated the IP addresses) ...  and thanks, I appreciate your help. L

Hi Hatter - thanks for the info, interesting. When making these upgrades, which I resisted for as long as possible, I needed to make it as quick and painless, with "minimal" disruption in my work. It still took three weeks to plan and execute, plus it has been a week of fiddling - that is a lot of time to devote to computer maintenance. I kept the original system as a back-up in case things really went south. Also I need 10.5 because I have several active legacy client web sites in GoLive CS2, which I tried in 10.6, but it did not run well.
I agree that doing things off the internal drives is faster to operate, but my approach was prudent. Later I can swap those around. My external 10.7 drive is a WD My Passport Studio, and has had no problems (except the sucker runs pretty hot). I considered the SSD but the price is still high: NewEgg, internal 500GB regular drive today is $60 - 75, 500GB SSD is $340-370. That is a pretty big difference in a small business. I am maxed out on RAM, so that helps a lot.
One last thing though, for the Adobe Creative Suite the scratch discs are the internal drives, so it still runs fast in that sense. Fast is relative ya know, I remember programs taking 40 and 50 seconds to launch, now Photoshop is 19, barely time to drink some coffee.
I have bought a number of UPS over the years, including replacement batteries. It has been expensive frustration, because in a real emergency they seldom do what they promise. In Colorado there are big thunderstorms every summer, and I field tested them a number of times - but was never happy with the protection. Dollar for dollar, investing in a whole house (or whole office) surge arrester at the main utility panel offers protection for the equipment, with about the same amount of time to save your work (which in reality is about 1 second).
I had a ton of connection issues with Spotify working in 10.5, but I am happy to say those have completely gone away with this upgrade. I also like many of the refinements in Lion, such as the improved System Profiler.
Linc, I will will take a look at your suggestion, it is a little vaque. Am I looking for a perticular result ? I don't want to operate for too long with the firewall off.
I think my first step is getting the Time Machine figured out, that could be the whole issue.
Thanks guys for the input -- it is appreciated. L
