Indent in Pages

I have an "Indent" question.  How do create the following format in Pages? I want the subsequent text after the first indent to indent automatically and then turn off when I hit a double space for the next speaker.  Is this possible?
Example:
Thomas:     Wish you could figure this out because
this is driving me crazy when I can't
make the computer do what I want.
William:     I know what you mean, Thomas.

Hi at321;
Just make some changes in the Format Panel> Layout > Indents.
Put the cursor on the paragraph.
In the Left Indents select desired value (1 in in this case).
In the Right Indents select as needed (3.11 in this case).
Regards.

Look at the left hand margin indicator -
Compare it to the right-hand one. You'll note that it is actually two stops, instead of just one - a small bar on top of a triangle.
Split them by careful dragging, and you can get what you want -
You may need to do a bit of fiddling until you get it just the way you want it.

  • Formatting first-paragraph indent in Pages for iPad

I've read the instructions in Pages for iPad's help, which instructs users to highlight a paragraph or paragraphs and then drag the first-line indentation symbol to the desired indent. However, I'm unable to get the first-line indent symbol to move independently of the left paragraph margin symbol. I must be missing something. Is there a source that explains these procedures in greater detail? I would also like to be able to set up a template with this paragraph indentation, but obviously need to figure out how to indent first.

    James,
Thanks for the suggestion to use a stylus. I just tried that and you're right that it *sometimes* works, maybe about 25 percent of the time in the past few minutes I've been experimenting with the technique. My problem is that I need to indent precisely for documents that will be saved as Word .docx files. I can't believe that Pages for iPad apparently relegates this important feature solely by sliding and not allowing us to open a window and set the indents numerically.
If it's any consolation, Word for iPad seems just as bad.  :-)

Since Word for iPad requires an Office 365 subscription, I would say worse .
Honestly, it take a little practice. another option might be to start with a different template that includes paragraph indentions. A couple of the built-in templates do, and there are other savailable in the app store.

  • How to change indentation iCloud Pages Beta?

It is really annoying, I can move that grayed out indentation thing on my iPad in Pages, but when I'm on iCloud Pages Beta on the PC at my school (which updates to the most recent version of Chrome or Safari or Firefox whenever it is available), the button is not available.
Does anyone know if there is a workaround, or is this just Apple being Apple?
The help article for this question is: http://help.apple.com/pages/icloud/1/#/gil56d107ce4 - but this is worthless help article, it doesn't help me at all and even the IT person who administrates the computer lab could not help me. Anyone who can help will be really really really appreciated.

And in case anyone wants to know, this is not just because I was using a PC….
Anyone know how to fix this, if it can be fixed??

  • Auto indent on pages for ipad

I used to be able to do this until the recent update. When I am indented, and I use a number as a bullet point, pages used to automatically go to the next number even if I was indented. Now if I type 1. And then return, it just goes back to the far left.  I will now show you what I mean
What I want to do and used to be able to do...
    History
         1.  Civil war history
         2.  World war 2
    What it does now....
    History
         1.  Civil war history
    World war 2
There is no easy way to tab anymore so taking notes in class is a pain.  At least before this latest update I only had to tab once and it would auto tab and auto number. If I want to auto number anymore, it can't be indented at all.  It can only be all the way to the left margin.  PLEASE HELP I NEED TO TAKE EXTENSIVE NOTES IN CLASS AND IT TAKES FOREVER NOW!!!

I cannot duplicate your problem in Pages on my iPad. When I start a line with a number and period (1.) type some text, then tap return, I'm presented with a new line indented to the same place as the first line and the next number in sequence is automatically inserted.
But if I tap Return twice instead of going down another line the number is removed.
Perhaps your formatting is off? I would suggest though that you first quit Pages like this:
Go to the Home screen and double click the Home button. That will reveal the row of recently used apps at the bottom of the screen. Tap and hold on the app in question until it wiggles and displays a minus sign. Tap the minus sign to actually quit the app. Then tap anywhere on the screen above that bottom row to return the screen to normal. Then restart the app and see if it works normally.
Then reboot your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously ignoring the red slider until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. See if that fixes your problem.

  • Short question. How do I turn off the auto indent in Pages?

I'm trying to write test answers between the questions. When I type in the answers, they indent to the indention point of the question. Then the second line of my answer also indents the same amount; I can't get it to move out to the left margin.

In the Inspector, select Text and then Tabs. Set your Paragraph Indents as I have done, and you will not have any auto indenting. If you want knowledge on the various ways to set indenting in Pages, choose Help, and type, “indent paragraph.” The second item returned should offer, “Setting indents for paragraphs.”
No need to go back to Word.

  • How can I create a new format in pages?

Basically this comes from trying to change the vertical indentation on pages. (Like you can change the horizontal, you know? I just wanted to make the text field smaller on all sides. Incidentally, if you know how to do a vertical indentation change, I'd be all ears.)
Anyway, apparently you can't do that, so....
I've got a set up that I want (two text boxes linked so that text spills over to the next) but I want this to be on every succeeding page without having to create the page all over again with new text boxes.
Is there any way to .... I don't know .... "automate" might be the right word, this first page set up so that it's automatic when my text fills the two boxes?
    Help?
    Thanks,
    R

    Two separate questions.
    1. "Vertical indentation"
Word processing document: Set the Document's top margin to a larger number. Highest I tried was 8" on a US Letter sized page, giving a 3" band for text. Graphic objects placed outside (above) this margin do appear on the display and on a Preview of the print, but I didn't check if they make it through to the printed page.
Or use a borderless, colourless shape with default Wrap properties to fill the space where you do not want text to appear.
Page Layout: All text is in Text boxes. Size and position of each box may be set as you wish.
    2.Linking Text boxes
Word processing document: Text boxes are independent objects if they have not been created as linked. You can add more linked boxes to a chain of linked boxes, but they will not reproduce themselves. New pages are added as text fills the base text area of the page, but the only objects appearing on the new page are those that have been set as Master Objects. These are not useful in your case, as the Master objects are exact copies (including content) of the original.
Page Layout document: If you Capture a page containing a pair of linked text boxes, that page becomes available in the menu of the Pages button in the Toolbar. The two boxes on a new pages will be linked to each other, but not to the original pair. To join the new boxes to the chain, click on the last box in the chain, then click on the first new box. The link will be added, and any excess text will flow into the new box(es).
NOTE: Not thoroughly explored. Do some experimenting.

    Barry

  • Is there a way to import an outline from Pages to Keynote?

I have about 30 slides each with bullet points that I've outlined with indents in Pages.
Is there a quick and simple way to populate this content into a Keynote presentation without having to manually create a page for each?
    Thanks

If you have Microsoft Office you can export a Word outline saved as .rtf , import it into Powerpoint and then open the Powerpoint from inside Keynote. It might work saving the Pages file in Word format and going from there.
It is a little complicated but once I worked out how to do it worked every time.  It is a little different for Keynote 6 and 5.
In your Word document you need to apply styles so that when you import the text into Keynote they map like this:
    Heading 1 = Title
    Heading 2 = Body level 1
    Heading 3 = Body level 2 etc
The system reads the file and wherever it finds a Heading 1 it makes a new slide. So for every new slide there must be a Heading 1 element, even if it is just a placeholder which you change or delete later.
    Keynote 6:
Prepare a Theme with the styles you want and drag the slide Master that most slides will use to the top of the list of Masters. Save the Theme (Save/Save theme). It will appear under My Themes in the Theme chooser.
1 Save Word outline as .rtf (important!)
    2 Open Powerpoint
3 Choose menu item Insert/slides from outline
    4 Save the Powerpoint file
    5 Open Keynote
6 Select File/Open and open the just saved ppt or pptx file. (You can open Powerpoint files directly into Keynote)
7 Choose the Theme you want (File/Change theme)
8 The slides will now all have the first Master in the list; apply different Masters to slides you want to change
    Keynote 5:
1 Save Word outline as .rtf (important!)
    2 Open Powerpoint
3 Choose menu item Insert/slides from outline
    4 Save the Powerpoint file
    5 Open Keynote
6 Select File/Open and open the just saved ppt or pptx file. (You can open Powerpoint files directly into Keynote)
7 Copy some slides from another presentation with the format you want into the Keynote file (or construct new masters as you wish them)
8 select all the new slides you have just imported and apply the master you want (the fonts, etc, won't be as you want them.)
9 select all slides and then select Format/Reapply master
10 By default if you open a Powerpoint file it may copy videos and audio into the file and you can't then change this. If you don't want this, copy slides back into a file which has been saved with external audio and video.

  • Pages to Doc Compatibility Issues

Why can't Apple/Pages fix its compatibility issues w. Word? It let's U save a file as doc. but many changes made in doc. do not take (e.g. tables, indentations, and page brakes). Why does not Pages default to the folder I open a document in when I re-save the document? Even when opening a document and making a simple change and hitting Save, Pages takes me back to the root directory.  That makes no sense.  Arghhh!!

Given what you described, I'm quite sure that you didn't exported the document as a .doc file where it was stored the first time.
I repeat : when you open a .doc file to edit it, it's a foreign document and the app doesn't take care of its original location. What is meaningful for it is location of files using its native format.
From my point of view, the best scheme is to work always on the native Pages document (don't re-open a file exported as .doc). If changes are required, apply them in the Pages document, save it then (and only when it's saved as Pages) export it as .doc.
When I'm forced to create a Word document from Pages, I don't use File > Export …
    I don't use Share > Export.
I use Save As the way you may see on this Screenshot:
This way the default location is the one where the Pages document was saved.
The changes in the layout aren't bugs but the results of deliberate design choices.
As I wrote, the goal was not to reproduce exactly in Word the layout of the Pages document.
It was just to give something readable.
The User Guide clearly states that differences may occur.
As far as I know, when you open on a PC a document created in Word on a mac, you are not sure that it will match exactly the original design.
During the export process, documents created in Pages will loose several of the features which make Pages an interesting tool. I hate M…Soft products but, if someone is forced to exchange on regular basis with Office users, iWork isn't the tool to use. Better work with Office or with one of its free clones.

  • Abiword shift+tab behavior?

Does anybody know how to set
    Shift+tab
to decrease indent like it does in other word processors? I find it strange that I have to use backspace to decrease the indent (which is also annoying because backspace is typically use to delete the bullet at the current indentation). Using shift+tab doesn't do anything.
I cant find info anywhere and i get the feeling this is something only im experiencing.. I'm on abiword 2.4.6.

I do not know..For an example...if you are in Word or Pages and you press tab to indent..I used to press Shift and then tab to undo such indent if it isn't what I was going for in the page set up.  When I press the combination, it no longer undos the indent, it keeps indenting.  Howver, the shift works to capitalize a letter and the tab works to indent normally.
try command Z to undo your tab indent in Pages.
