InDesign Crashes When Dealing with Table
Hi Folks,
I'm running a 2012 MacBook Pro, OSX 10.8.4, and InDesign CS6 8.0.1
I have a document I've been working on for the better part of 1.5 years now (a physics book, lots of pictures, diagrams, equations, etc.) This morning it was working fine.
A few hours later, there is one specific table at the end of a chapter on page 199 that appears corrupted. All the data in the table magically disappeared. Now, when I try to edit the table, delete the table, export the file, anything, everything stops and crashes the moment the table comes into play.
I first tried just deleting the table. Causes InDesign to crash.
Then I tried exporting the file to IDML. Causes InDesign to crash.
I've tried deleting preferences... still causes InDesign to crash.
I can export to PDF still.
The only issue appears to be with the file (and that particular table). Editing other files, or other tables in the document, still works fine.
Any ideas? I'm happy to erase the problem content and continue, but I can't afford to throw the entire document away and start over... and anytime I try to delete the table, edit the table, etc, the whole thing crashes.
Here's the start of one of the crash reports:

InDesign crashes when syncing book with Hyperlinks in master
Hi,
I seem to have an issue with InDesign crashing when trying to sync a Book (INDB file) with page links (Hyperlinks) in the Master.
Ref. Hyperlink panel > Edit Hyperlink > Link To: Page
I've narrowed the crashing issue down to InDesign only crashing when the Style Source (containing the master with page links), tries to sync with another doc in the Book that uses the master in the Pages panel. Thus I do not get a crashing error if the doc does not contain the master in the Pages panel.
For the pages that did not contain the master on the Pages panel I noticed that the Hyperlinks were labelled differently from the Style Source (ex. "hyperlink 1" from the Style Source would be "hyperlink 2" in the first document synced with it (assuming only one hyperlink present).
If I remove the Hyperlinks (page links) from the master, the error no longer occurs for any of the pages.
I put the links on the Page as opposed to the Master to test functionality and they work as expected. Although part of the reason for having the Master is these links appear exactly the same across multiple pages in the Book.
I've tried to export all my pages as IDML files then re-save them as INDD files to no avail. Did the same to all the files as well with "Save As" which didn't do anything either. I then installed the latest patch I could find: Application Version 7.0.4.553 (See all InDesign Patches), which also did not work.
Not sure if this is a bug or if what I'm trying to accomplish should be done differently.
The links in the Master need to link to the first page of select docs in the Book. Similar functionality to how a rendered table of contents would behave.
Ref. Layout > Table of Contents...I had the same problem, and it turns out that the problem is having the same file into different folders. For example I had an MP4 in iTunes, and the same file in the photos folder that was being updated to the iPad. So I just removed one file and it syncs perfectly.

InDesign crashes when scrolling/editing a corrupted page with a broken link.
Just sharing a problem I had and how I solved it (with help from adobe tech support-thanks!).
Indesign CC running on a Mac OSX 10.9.2
PROBLEM:
InDesign crashed when ever I reached a certain page in a large document I was working on. On that page was a link to an illustrator file. Somehow this file must have been corrupted, but there was no chance to edit or delete this link/page as the program crashed instantly when ever I tried to manipulated that specific page.
SOLUTION:
I opened a new, empty document; opened the broken file and moved all pages to the new document: LAYOUT/PAGES/MOVE PAGES; select Move Pages "ALL"; Move to: "Select the new document"; click OK. I went back to the new file with the moved pages saved it and deleted the corrupted link on that page which I could now edit again. Problem solved!
Hope this is helpful for anyone who experience the same problem.Did you share in the program forum? InDesign

InDesign crashing when running script on large files
Hello,
I have created a javascript that will:
For each InDesign file inside of a specified directory {
Open the file
Find all textual elements with the specified character style
Convert that textual element to a hyperlink
Export the file to PDF (with a specified export preset)
Close the document
The script is working great. However, the script will cause InDesign to crash if it encounters a file with a larger file size. The script works fine with InDesign files that are less than 50 - 60 MB. When it hits a filesize that is any larger, InDesign will crash. I am running InDesign CS5.
Does anyone have any recommendations?
Thanks!I figured out my problem: I had a block of code in my for loop (which converts all character styles of a given name to hyperlinks) which would set the hyperlink styling properties. For some reason, this code would crash InDesign when dealing with larger InDesign documents. I deleted this block of code from my script.
Here is the code block:
for(/* looping through the active document */){ . . . ++hyperlinks;
with(hyperlink) {
highlight = HyperlinkAppearanceHighlight.none;
borderStyle = HyperlinkAppearanceStyle.solid;
visible = false;
name = foundTexts[i].contents + " :" + id;
Thanks for everyone's suggestions! -
How to get around a performance issue when dealing with a lot of data
Hello All,
This is an academic question really, I'm not sure what I'm going to do with my issue, but I have some options. I was wondering if anyone would like to throw in their two cents on what they would do.
I have a report, the users want to see all agreements and all conditions related to the updating of rebates and the affected invoices. From a technical perspective ENT6038-KONV-KONP-KONA-KNA1. THese are the tables I have to hit. The problem is that when they retroactively update rebate conditions they can hit thousands of invoices, which blossoms out to thousands of conditions...you see the problem. I simply have too much data to grab, it times out.
I've tried everything around the code. If you have a better way to get price conditions and agreement numbers off of thousands of invoices, please let me know what that is.
I have a couple of options.
1) Use shared memory to preload the data for the report. This would work, but I'm not going to know what data is needed to be loaded until report run time. They put in a date. I simply can't preload everything. I don't like this option much.
2) Write a function module to do this work. When the user clicks on the button to get this particular data, it will launch the FM in background and e-mail them the results. As you know, the background job won't time out. So far this is my favored option.
Any other ideas?
Oh...nope, BI is not an option, we don't have it. I know, I'm not happy about it. We do have a data warehouse, but the prospect of working with that group makes me whince.My two cents - firstly totally agree with Derick that its probably a good idea to go back to the business and justify their requirement in regards to reporting and "whether any user can meaningfully process all those results in an aggregate". But having dealt with customers across industries over a long period of time, it would probably be bit fanciful to expect them to change their requirements too much as in my experience neither do they understand (too much) technology nor they want to hear about technical limitations for a system etc. They want what they want if possible yesterday!
So, about dealing with performance issues within ABAP, I'm sure you must be already using efficient programming techniques like using Hash internal tables with Unique Keys, accessing rows of the table using Field-Symbols and all that but what I was going to suggest to you is probably look at using [Extracts|http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/9f/db9ed135c111d1829f0000e829fbfe/content.htm]. I've had to deal with this couple of times in the past when dealing with massive amount of data and I found it to be very efficient in regards to performance. A good point to remember when using Extracts that, I quote from SAP Help, "The size of an extract dataset is, in principle, unlimited. Extracts larger than 500KB are stored in operating system files. The practical size of an extract is up to 2GB, as long as there is enough space in the filesystem."
Hope this helps,
Cheers,
Sougata. -
Indesign crashes when I try and open my document
I created a file in Indesign which represents many days of work.
It crashed indesign when I was pdf'ing the document and now it crashes indesign every time I try to open it.
It is my only version.
I have tried many ways to open it but nothing has worked - can you help?
I've just realised that now - Indesign crashes when I try and open any document!
Thanks very much
NB Someone suggested I send it to Adobe and they may be able to fix it, but I can't find a contact email to send it to.You need to empty the InDesign Recovery folder (which is hidden in your user profile/library). You can find the path to InDesign SavedData in this link: Replace Your Preferences and the recovery folder should be in the same folder with the InDesign SavedData file.
Once the recovery folder is empty you should be able to launch ID, then try opening the file. If it wasn't damaged while writing it back to disk it will be fine, in the last previously saved state. -

Indesign crashes when picking swatches
hi, Im working in indesign cs3 (updated to latest) on tiger 10.4.11 I have been working on this book on and off since April, but last week i noticed indesign crashing when color swatches are picked from the swatches palette. This especially happens when working within master pages, but it has also happened when not in the masters. I have deleted the fonts file in the cache, I have also trashed the preferences, and it still happens. Has anyone come across the same phenom? If so what is the fix?
For now I'm avooiding the swatches palette, its a pain in the butt especially working on a long document. Any tips are appreciated.hi Larry. I dont mind trying that, the only thing is I'm working off the book palette, with about 12 chapters in it so far. I've only been working with 4 of the 12 so far, so not sure how to export the whole book as inx. Or may be just export them one at a time

InDesign Crashes when exporting to InCopy
I support several hundred InDesign/ InCopy users. We have been using this workflow for several years.
Approximately a month ago, we migrated to CS5 (7.0.3). I began to immediately get support calls that InDesign and InCopy were crashing. A few of the calls were that InCopy was crashing when pasting text from MS Office, but he overwhelming majority of the calls are for InDesign crashing when exporting stories to InCopy. If exported one at a time, the stories export fine. When exporting all stories or an entire text layer of stories, it will crash nearly without fail.
Our environment consists of Mac Pro 2x2.66Ghz and 2.8Ghz Intel Core Duo 2 iMacs running 10.5.8. with CS5 7.0.3. This is happening on multiple machines. A few of them have been gone over to verify base OS integrity, permissions repaired, DiskWarrior run etc… to make sure we did not have individual machine issues.
I need resolution for both issues, but the crashing while exporting is so prevalent that my graphic designers are starting to really get aggravated.
I searched the forum for "InCopy", for "export" and for "crash." None of those terms returned a single hit. I can't imagine those terms are not in this forum, so I am working on the assumption that searching must be broken at the moment.
Thanks in advance for any guidance,
KevinTry posting on the InCopy forum. There was another similar report there...

InDesign crashes when printing
Using InDesignCS2 4.0 on a MacBookPro OS 10.6.8.
InDesign crashes when I hit "print" on all documents, so it looks like it's not corrupt data in the document. As a workaround, I can export to a pdf and print, but now need to add printer's marks, which can only be done through "print."
I've re-installed the program from the original disk.
Thoughts?
-- Jerry MonaghanIs this an installation on a computer you've just acquired? Or did it work before on this particular computer?
There is a mismatch between your InDesign version which came out in May 2005, and Mac OS X 10.6, which came out in 2009. InDesign CS2 was designed for a much earlier version of Mac OS X 10.2.8 to 10.3.8. Apple often makes OS changes which makes features in much earlier software versions not work.
You're lucky to have a workaround to be able to print via PDF files. -
