Inheritance in Flex

Like, I created a screen with a menu, combobox to filter search, textbox, datagrid ......
Ae I want this screen to serve as basis for other screens, like an extended form in Visual Studio.
In case I need to change a menu I can usually, if I enter more than one option on the menu, the menus are taking shape, no fading, like my project was in Flex 4 ...
For example in Screen 1 had a menu Add, Change, Delete, Add 2 had on screen and Change, in which the tava Delete button was nothing.
If I need to maintain in a third screen for example, change the datagrid Screen 3, you'll be much easier, because I already have a screen based on ...
Hugs

I believe there is an ensureCellIsVisible method.

• Newbie needs ENV help

Hi all,
I recently inherited a flex project someone left for dead...
I am having a little trouble finding some things referenced in
http://livedocs.adobe.com/flash/9.0/ActionScriptLangRefV3/.
When in Flex builder 3, I cannot seem to import any fl.* packages.
How do I get to this package???
Also, I do not see any support for nested Data Grids... I
have a REAL need to be able to nest one grid within another. Is
there any way I can do this in Flex? I found some stuff about the
AdvancedDataGrid component, but, I don't know where to look for
information on its capabilities.
So, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,
Stan

Hi Stan,
Here's the link to the Flex 3 feature introductions on our
Adobe Labs site about Advanced DataGrid:

• Set data function

hi folks,
i'm new to flex and that is why i don't know when the set data function of item renderer is called. means what causes the call for set data function of item renderer?
i inherited a flex application (the developer left) and i am wondering why the set data function of one item renderer is called when an item of the item renderer was clicked but the set data function of another item renderer is called just one time (when the view is created) but never again even if an item of the item renderer was clicked.
so please can someone explain me or mention a good ressource for reading about how it works?

Whenever data changes in some way, for example when the dataprovider is changed, the set data function is called automatically.
Some tips:
1. Make sure the dataprovider is bound (<s:List dataprovider="{myDataCollection}"/>
2. If you change the dataprovider, call the refresh() function (like when the dataprovider is a IListCollectionView)
3. override the set data function in your itemRenderer to do additional things there.
Hope this helps

• Need help with url for mx:HTTPService

I inherited a Flex project and I do not have much experience with Flex.
I have a mxml file with a HTTPService defined where the url is defined as such
<mx:HTTPService id="domainFetcher" contentType="application/xml" resultFormat="e4x"
url="{XXX.xxxPrefix}queries.php" method="POST" result="domainResultHandler(event)">
<mx:request xmlns=""><ListDomainTree/></mx:request>
</mx:HTTPService>
I cannot determine how {XXX.xxxPrefix} is defined. When I make changes on the target web location I do not see the changes. If I remove the {XXX.xxxPrefix} then I do.
So, it looks like {XXX.xxxPrefix} is pointing to another location that I cannot determine.
I hope someone can help me with how to find out how the value of {XXX.xxxPrefix} is getting set.
Thanks

Use network monitor(it is a feature in Flash builder) to determine the url, also, XXX.xxPrefix? is it a property of the class where this httpservice is defined? I still do not understand what you mean by the following line.. Use debugger to find out whats in the prefix thing. Still your question does not have clarity, may be you should post more code.
I inherited a Flex project and I do not have much experience with Flex.

• Stopping Flex Style Inheritance

Hey everyone,
I'm using a TitleWindow as a container for several controls.
A lot of the internal controls are RichTextEditors and other things
based off the Panel control. Such internal controls inherit the
styles from the TitleWindow, but I don't want them to. I attempted
inheriting TitleWindow and using the following metadata:
[Style(name="headerColors", type="Array", arrayType="uint",
format="Color", inherit="no")]
But I get this error:
Declaration of style 'headerColors' conflicts with previous
declaration in
C:\dev\flex3_sdk\frameworks\libs\framework.swc(mx/controls/DataGrid).
Anyone know how to accomplish what I want without having to
apply the "normal" style to all my child controls?
Thanks!

Somewhere in your pom.xml where you are configuring your build dependancies there will be a line <scope>caching</scope> this line is configuring the build to use a flex runtime shared library. This line is generating the error because caching is not a valid dependancy scope in maven 3 however mojos uses it anyway. There was a defect opened against flexmojos; I've linked it below. Froeder's response to the issue was that it was not fixable, that the warning is expected and that we'll have to live with it for now.

• Flex datagrid custom itemRenderer - making column NOT EDITABLE

Hi all,
I am new to flex and having been trying to build custom editors and renderers for datagrid. I ran into this problem trying to fix another one (http://forums.adobe.com/post!reply.jspa?message=3569216)
The problem is :
I have a custom editor and a renderer for a text column. The whole grid is editable (i.e; editable=true). But clicking on the cell does not show me the editor. However, if I change the renderer to mx.controls.label, clicking on it takes me to my custom editor.
Can anyone please tell what I am doing wrong?? I am pasting the relevant code for more details.
DATAGRID : Replacing itemRenderer = "renderers.TextRenderer" with itemRenderer = "mx.controls.Label" makes the column editable
<mx:DataGrid id="dg" editable="true" rowHeight="100" width="861" x="10" y="10" height="498" dataProvider="{this.slideArray}">
<mx:columns>
<mx:DataGridColumn headerText="Text" width="100"
resizable="true" sortable="false"
itemRenderer = "renderers.TextRenderer"
itemEditor="editors.TextEditor"
dataField="text" editorDataField="myData"/>
</mx:columns>
</mx:DataGrid>

]]>
</fx:Script>
</s:MXDataGridItemRenderer>
Tricks I have tried and failed :
1. added the following code to the renderer
override public function get data():Object{
return super.data;
2. remove/change focusEnabled
3. wrote the same renderer in Actionscript - making it extend MXDataGridItemRenderer. I had to add the label component txt using addElement. Clicking on this does show th editor but it doesnt show the label txt at all... i.e; I dont get any text displayed.
I am using Flex 4.0 sdk.

It worked!!!!!!! Thank you!! What you mentioned was indeed the problem!
Here is the custom item renderer's set data function
Before
Now
override public function set data(value : Object):void{
super.data = text;
this.txt.text = (value as Slide).text ; //txt is the Label control
override public function set data(value : Object):void{
super.data = value;
this.txt.text = (value as Slide).text ; //txt is the Label control
oh man, this is such a stupid mistake. I think I was confused with having three text properties - one inherited from MXDataGridItemRenderer, one in my txt Label control and one on my slide.
I had no idea that sending the value up to the super class was so important. None of the docs I read seemed to give much importance to this statement.
thanks so much and sorry for taking up so much of your time. I guess it is uncessary to post any more code.

• I am unable to assign breakpoints in Flex Builder 4

I am new to Flex ( a month or so ) and have inherited a big project. This is an odd one. I am unable to assign breakpoints in a particular project. (I've redacted company specifics...)
Here is an example:
If there is a breakpoint loaded the project won't launch. It stalls after loading the first swf file...
If I uncheck the breakpoint the project will load.
If I try to insert a breakpoint after the project loads I get this:
Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance...

• Flex Automation API "Licensing Issue"

Hi,
We are using "Eclipse Ganymede with Flash Builder Standard Version - 4.0 plugin" + Premium License. We are working with the automation of a Flex application. The automation tool we are using is the FlexMonkium 4.1.5.
We have some issues with the automation. I have mentioned those below:
Flex Automation API is limiting the features of the FlexMonkium 4.1.5 as this tool inherits the features and it underlies on the mechanism of the FlexAutomation API only.
Due to the above mentioned point, the dependencies are:
License not present. With the trial version only limited records are allowed.
License not present. With the trial version only limited replays are allowed.
When we record the user actions performed in the application with the FlexMonkium, we are getting the error as "License not present. With the trial version only limited records are allowed."
Note: This error is thrown after 15 - 20 user actions have been performed.
When we execute the recorded script, it is showing up a error message as "License not present. With the trial version only limited replays are allowed."
Note: This error is thrown after 51 -20 user actions have been executed by the script.
The complete code of the application is compiled with "Eclipse Ganymede with Flash Builder Standard Version - 4.0 plugin" + Premium License."
From the adobe forum: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/682958 we understood that the 4.1 SDK with Premium licence would work fine with record and playback.
My quesion is, Does the same works with this combination > "Eclipse Ganymede with Flash Builder Standard Version - 4.0 plugin" + Premium License.
Please guide me to resolve this issue, it would really be very helpful for me:)
Thanks in advance,
Anand.S

May I know what you mean exactly by "Flash Builder Standard Version - 4.0 plugin" + Premium License.
Have you entered Flash builder premium license key in the screen that asks for serial number? If so, it will be Flash Builder Premium version 4.0 and not Standard version any more.
If so, automation should work without any issue.
To check whether premium features are enabled for your version of Flash Builder, please open "Network Monitor" using Window > Show View and see if it is enabled.
If it is disabled, it shows a message that premium license is required.
Please confirm.
Thanks,

• Flex SDK 3.2 : Unmarshalling issue : SOAP objects are not deserialized completely

Hi everybody !
I have a strange problem with SOAP deserialization in flex 3.2, and I thought this forum will be the best place to get answers ...
When I try to fetch some objects (like the ones shown below), the XMLDecoder does not deserialize all the properties.
In this case, it stops at the property named "rating". After it, all other data are lost.
I've used the flex builder debugger to locate the problem, and this lead me to the following method in the XMLDecoder class :
getApplicableValues(parent:*, valueElements:XMLList, name:QName,context:DecodingContext, maxOccurs:uint):XMLList:
State of the variables, before the "bug" :
The strange behavior appears after the five first properties had been deserialized correctly.
At this step : startIndex = 5, and the next property to unmarshall is "user" (according to the MExpertNotes object mapping)
the valueElement's list contains the following elements :
to simplify the notation, I will write only the position in the list and the xml tag name (see the complete soap response for more details at the end of this post)
(position, fieldName)
(0, ID) -> inherited from MotocycletteObjectImpl
(1,comment)
(2, noteValidation) (a Bean, never returned by our service -> set to null)
(3,noteValidationID)
(4,rating)
(5,timeOfCreation) -> inherited from MotocycletteObjectImpl
(6,user) (a Bean, never returned by our service -> set to null)
(7,userExpert) (a Bean, never returned by our service -> set to null)
(8,userExpertID)
(9,userID)
(10,version) -> inherited from MotocycletteObjectImpl
when it enters the for loop, at the first iteration the valueElements[i].name is equals to "timeOfCreation" and the name parameter is equal to "user".
so this test : if (name == null || valueElements[i].name() == name
|| ((name.uri == "" || name.uri == null)
&& name.localName == valueElements[i].name().localName))
returns false. The skipAhead variable is set to false (and i don't understand why). It stops iterating over the valueElementList, and so, skips all other properties.
Is this a bug ? Does a workaround exists ?
This affects many of our objects.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Use of inheritance in web services

Hi,
I'm new to Flex development and have been developing a PPro extension which also uses a couple of web services to obtain information about the media and sequences.
One of the web services I use gives me information about a project. This project contans a list of clipmarks (sub-clips) that will become a sequence in PPro. The problem is that the web service clipmark class is the superclass of either media_clipmark or audio_clipmark, and the items it puts in the list on the server side are of these subclass types. So you get a list of say 3 media_clipmarks.
BUT when then appear in the results in Flex they have been reduced to their common superclass clipmark and thus don't contain any of their specialised properties. Is inheritance of server side class not supported by the proxy generator code in Flash Builder 4? Is there any way to achieve the result I want - that is a list of clipmarks which are either media_clipmarks or audio_clipmarks and get the specialised properties as appropriate?
I am assured that the server is correctly adding these to the project and I assume it is the declaration of the project as having List<clipmark> that is causing the problem.
If this question has already been answered please point me to the relevant answer - couldn't find it by search.
Thanks
John

You can't send the special charater as it is, replce them with their equivalent notation
"&" with "&"
"<" with "<"
">" with ">"
"\"" with """
"'" with "'" etc

• Flex DataGrid last empty column dynamic width

Goal: have a blank right-most column in a DataGrid that takes
up the slack in case the other columns do not total 100% of the
overall grid width.
This is what I have, which seems to work:
<mx:DataGridColumn editable="false" sortable="false"
minWidth="0"/>
I am wondering if there is a best-practice way of specifying
such a last column that is better than the above tag.
Flex SDK 3.2
Thank you,
Mike Chabot

It worked!!!!!!! Thank you!! What you mentioned was indeed the problem!

override public function set data(value : Object):void{

• Flex 4 preloading modules and moduleFactory question?

Hi,
I've run some tests and taking into consideration this info about preloading modules: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/flex/using/WS2db454920e96a9e51e63e3d11c0bf64277-7ffd.html#WS2d b454920e96a9e51e63e3d11c0bf64277-7feb
Here are 2 scenarios:
1) If you preload a module like the link example above, then you can't load it with moduleFactory any more, since it was preloaded without one. So there will be no styles inherited at all.
2) If you preload a module like the link example above, but this time you pass moduleFactory, then it will be preloaded with the moduleFactory and when you load it into your application the styles will be inherited, no matter if you pass or not the moduleFactory here. It only depends on the moduleFactory u pass when you preload it.
Now here is the summary question which I think is not possible at this point but just want to make sure if there isn't a way and maybe request a feature for it:
Is it possible to have 1 module loaded 2 times in an application with 2 different moduleFactories passed to each ?
Example: If for the first you pass moduleFactory = null, and for the second you pass the main app moduleFactory
Note:
I think it doesn't matter if we talk about preloading or loading the same module more than once at the same time
I'm pretty sure that the first time it is loaded it will get the moduleFactory and the second time it will use the moduleFactory specified the first time, not the one which is specified when loading.
So if we take this example we pass null for the first time the module is loaded, which means the second time it's loaded no matter we pass the main app moduleFactory, it will still be null and no styles will be inherited.
I'm not sure but I think that if you trace the moduleFactory it will correctly display the object you passed so in our example in the second loading, moduleFactory won't be null but the main app moduleFactory, but styles won't be inherited anyway..

Hi,
I've run some tests and taking into consideration this info about preloading modules: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/flex/using/WS2db454920e96a9e51e63e3d11c0bf64277-7ffd.html#WS2d b454920e96a9e51e63e3d11c0bf64277-7feb

• Style Inheritance on default custom style

I've created a custom class that uses some customs styles
I've defined (i.e. underlineColor). I used the sample code to
create a default style value with a one time classConstruct method.
I did notice that the sample code provided by adobe doesn't
seem to work when you use a style tag to define only some of the
style parameter, I was able to fix this by checking each style
parameter in the construct and setting only the ones that where non
existing.
But I then hit another wall, this time trying to use style
inheritance, according to documentation, inherited styles are check
on the parent first and then checked on the class defined styles,
but I've noticed that this doesn't seem to work, in fact if I use
the classConstruct method to define the style default values then
inherited values are not used.
I was wondering if anyone knows how to create styles default
values with inheritance and how the classConstruct method is really
used.
thanks

No, the closer the tag is to being your actual class, the
more likely its
style is to be used.
