Initramfs and blocking some sata drive detection

Would it be feasible/possible to tell the initramfs to ignore everything but my root filesystem?
When I load, before rc.sysinit takes over, I see a LOT of text, mostly because I've got 5 harddrives and 3 usb devices hooked up to the comp. Is there any way to shorten that part seeing as how I don't need to access any of the other harddrives that early in the boot process? Thanks.

You can remove try to remove the usb modules by getting rid of any 'usb..' hook in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf. However, you *need* sata driver for your main harddrive, and once it gets loaded the kernel will detect all the remaining sata drivers as well. What you can try though is to pass 'fastboot' parameter to the kernel - that might cause the kernel to detect the driver in parallel - so shortening the time needed to detect them. [However this might cause that the init will proceed before your root harddrive is detected, resulting in a problem that it will try to mount a nonexistent drive and fail.]

  • Single sata drive detection problem

Ok here is my problem that I am pulling my hair out over.
I purchased k7n2 delta ilsr and a sata 10000 WD raptor drive yesterday.
I am trying to install the single drive in my system and the os will not detect the drive.
This is the steps I have been taking to no avail.
    1.  On  boot up pressing ctrl f  to set up a stripe raid array (required even if there is only one drive)
    2. reboot and boot to western digital data lifeguard tools and format the drive.  (This program sees the drive just fine and says its functional.)
    3.  Reboot and set the bois to boot to os cd, reboot and run the w2000 cd and hit F6 when prompted.  Then it prompts me to install the promise 376/378 fastrack drivers which I do and it installs them.  then it leads me to the prompt to install the os and it says setup did not find any hard disk drives installed.
I have tried many variations of this to no avail, what am I missing?

I romoved the jumper in the jumper block with no change, the floppy drive installs the promise drivers fine, I d/l the larger file folders  for the promise drivers with no change.
the drive is attached to sata1, I moved it to sata 2 with no change.
The only thing I can think of is a bios setting I am missing, I cannot see the drive in the bios only when I boot to the wd utility.
My other thought is according to the mobo manual it says to fdisk and format rather than using the data lifeguard utility I am using to format.  I do not have the files to boot to dos, fdisk and format the drive.  I made a msdos boot disk in xp and transfered format and fdisk to the floppy but the command in dos does not work.  format ???? to where there is no drive designation.

  • AppleRAID and G-Tech SATA drives disconnecting

    Hi
We're working with a 2 x 2.66GHz MacPro, 2GB RAM, digitising HD material with Final Cut Studio 2, onto a G-Tech SATA drive (two external drives in an enclosure, striped with Apple RAID). The drives will disconnect about three times a day, which throws a spanner in the digitizing. If I power the drives down and then back on, it reconnects. I've swapped the cables, moved the SATA card so that there's a gap between it and the Kona capture card, and the problem persists. Here's what I see in the system log:
    AppleRAID::completeRAIDRequest - error 0xe00002ca detected for set "G-SATA" (3A92F239-1E61-4402-A49C-7E02E599859E), member BC894A87-BFB0-4E6D-915E-80DCE942F668, set byte offset = 278947631104.

Does anyone know if this looks like a hardware error (the drives themselves, the cables or SATA card), or something wrong with AppleRAID (ie, would switching to SoftRAID help?) Even though a restart of the drives fixes it, I'm concerned that we may ultimately lose our expensive HD data.
    Thanks!

Is the G-SATA from G-Tech the product you are having trouble with? Is this the link?
    http://www.g-technology.com/Products/G-SATA.cfm
The picture of the card is small but it looks like a 2-port Silicon Image SiI-3132 card. If the card is based on the SiI-3132 design, the latest version 1.1.9 Mac driver can be found here:
    http://www.siliconimage.com/support/supportsearchresults.aspx?pid=32&cid=3&ctid= 2&osid=3&
These 2 port cards works well with individual drives but when used with RAID sets they are limited to approx. 115MB/sec read and write performance. All of the PCIe Macintosh four port host adapters provide superior performance. These include the following controllers:

  • VIA SATA drive detection

I'm having difficulty setting up RAID with the VIA on-board controller.
    (Please see signature for configuration)
I used to have the problem that my SATA drives were unpredictably detected upon boot (it worked sometimes). Now, after re-cabling my IDE drives to install WinXP64, they are NEVER detected.
I have two problems with the VIA RAID BIOS (2.02):
    (1) it can't see the drives and gives me the message
"HardWare Initiate Failed!!!" blah blah "The Bios does not be installed! Press to continue!"
    (2) pressing Tab does not enter the VIA BIOS setup
Since I have never used these drives (due to difficulty of driver installation in Linux), it hasn't been a problem before. Now that I have WinXP64 I want to use them.
    Could someone tell me:
    (1) what the jumper settings should be on the drives (see below)
    (2) what the MSI BIOS settings should be
    Thank you for *ANY* suggestions!

    I figured it out:
The jumpers need to be shunted on 1&2 for both drives. Without jumpers, "spread-spectrum clocking" is enabled, which the VIA controller doesn't like. The controller also won't work with PM2 (power management 2) mode, jumper shunt on 3&4.
(yes, there are jumpers on these two WD SATA drives)
And yeah, now I have to deal with XP-64 to map the array (or drive).
    Thanks!

You would find it far simpler to install the OS with recovery discs. How to order recovery discs.
If you can identify the part number on the back of the DVD drive, then we can see if the firmware updates for the drive on the support site apply to it.
If the manufacturer's name is also known, firmware updates can also be found at the manufacturers website under product support.
Is the new Windows Vista Ultimate installation DVD  the 64-bit version?
The way around this installation issue is to perform a Windows Vista hard disk installation.
    Kind regards,

  • Hard drive detection problem - PLEASE HELP!!!!

I'm about at my wits end with this problem.  One of my drives crashed over the weekend, and since then the replacement drive never gets detected.  When I have the second drive installed, my computer never gets past the "Verifying DMI Pool Data", then says disk boot failure.  When I take out the second drive, my computer boots fine.  I've tried different jumper settings, thinking maybe i looked at the diagram backwards, disconnecting my DVD drive and putting the hard disk on the secondary IDE, and installing the new drive as the master and installing Windows on it, with the old drive as the slave.  Nothing has worked.  As soon as I connect a second hard drive, I get a disk boot failure.  I've checked the boot priority a hundred times, and it's correct.  In case it was a power supply problem, I removed everything except the two hard drives and some RAM, and that didn't fix anything.  I'm lost as to where to go from here.  My computer works fine without the second drive, but I need the second drive for gaming.
I'm now thinking it may be the motherboard, because a couple things have happened over the last month.  First, all of a sudden I got a CMOS checksum error, then about a week and a half ago the onboard NIC died.  And when I installed the updated drivers and flashed the BIOS, on restart I received an error message saying something was wrong with the overclocking settings and had been reset to the default values.  The problem with that is I never overclock anything.
I'm not even sure the old drive actually crashed anymore.  I heard clicking coming from the computer, and when I all of a sudden lost access to the drive, I assumed it crashed.  But now that I am unable to get the brand new drive to work, I'm thinking I need to get a new motherboard.  I'm trying to avoid that as long as I can though because this one is only 5 months old.
Would a possible solution be to just leave the master on IDE, and buy a SATA drive to use as a second disk?  Or does mixing IDE and SATA cause issues?
Thanks for any help anybody may be able to offer.
Anyway, here are my system specs:
    K8N Neo4 motherboard
    Athlon64 3200+
    2.5 GB RAM - 3x 512 and 1x 1GB stick
Boot disk - Western Digital 120GB ATA 100 IDE
Old Slave - Seagate 60GB ATA 100 IDE
New Slave - Western Digital 120GB ATA 100 IDE
    NIC - Linksys 10/100
    DVD-RW - Mad Dog Multimedia
    DVD-ROM - Sony

Does the 2nd HD work then, were you able to boot up and install Windows?
    Does BIOS detect it?
Have you tried a new IDE cable?
Make sure that all the pins are properly in and not loose in the molex connector to the HD.
Have you tried using the new drive alone on IDE-1 or 2?
Have you tried clearing CMOS? remove P/S AC cord, press case power button a few times to drain remaining power then clearing CMOS buy way of the jumper.

  • MSI 787-G46 slowly boot and not load DVD drive after bios 1.6 beta2

I used bios version 1.5 without any problem. Now I loaded bios version 1.6 beta2 and when the PC starts at the lower right corner of the screen appeared the letters A2 for about 10 seconds, which was not. So I gave back 1.5 bios and the problem persists. I also found that it has the effect that the system does not load DVD drive.

In the new bios 1.6 beta 2 added item: Patch SATA driver detection issue and add item to control.
I do not know where it's set in bios, can not do this problem?
I was having similar issues with this bios after enabling RAID the hard drive BBS listed my drives multiple times and wont let you change the order, also trying to boot to the operating system would just display some EFI shell. I can only assume we will need to wait on another release for a fix.

  • Need Sata Driver to connect my external hard drive?

    Hi
I have an hp eliteworkbook 8540w with windows 7 on it. I made a backup of my computer witht he windows 7 backup software and put it on an external drive. When I try to restore the entire computer with that backup I must use the system repair disk to get to the option to restore my computer.
However it will not recongize my external drive and thus I cannot get to the image. My drive does connect through a usb cable but I am wondering if I need some sata driver as well.

ehm, i have like the same problem, and trying diffrent USB locations does'nt solve anything, instead the external hard drive will not run under the drivers of the other USB locations then windows gave it. but everyone can solve their problems by watching a trial on youtube or follow one one some blog/forum. only...i don't ever get the blue disk thingy in device maneger, what really sucks, i need to format this drive, but how? anyone got to tell me a diffrent way, diskpart does'nt work, diffrent letter theory does'nt work, diffrent USB location does'nt work, i cannot find drivers that can run this device, even thought i don't know anymore then ''sata portable HDD device''

  • Can I install a SATA drive in Mirror Drive Door G4?

I am looking at a Seagate 500 GB SATA drive at a great price at MWave ($109.) but see that SATA may require a different cable connector from the IDEs that I normally use in my box. Can I buy some kind of adaptor cable, or do I have to get a card of some kind. Where and how much?
Or, could I install the SATA (it's a ST3500630AS) in an external enclosure that fits ATA 133 3.5 hard drives?
    Thanks,

    Hi
You'd need a Mac compatible PCI card containing a SATA controller. The FirmTek SeriTek 1S2 or Sonnet Tempo is a popular two port choice (they're effectively the same card) and are available for around $70.
The Sonnet Tempo at least comes with a single SATA data cable, and a single power converter cable that allows you to use a legacy molex power connector (as found in the G4s) to power a SATA drive. Some SATA drives come with both power connectors anyway, hence the converter cable isn't required, but I don't think the Seagates do.
I use SATA drives in my G4 as they're marginally faster, the cabling is generally easier and more importantly they can also be moved to newer Macs in the future which support SATA drives natively. For me the extra cost of a SATA card was worthwhile.

  • Can't load XP onto SATA drive

I have a problem with a new system I am putting together.  The MB and HD are new and I do not suspect either of them to be the problem.  I formated the HD with Maxtor's program and it seems to go fine.  I can load the 6 floppies and start the CD for XP.  The HD appears in the boot sequence.  I can not find anything in the BIOS that suggests it supports SATA, even though I looked everywere.  When I try to load XP it goes OK until it asks where you want to do the installation and at that point it suggests there is no HD.  This is the only HD in the system.  Any suggestions would be appreciated because MSI support is closed for the weekend and I want to work on this over the weekend.

Tried another SATA disk and it does not show in My Computer or Windows Explorer either.  I know the new disk is good because I took it out of another working computer.  One thing though, I did not install any of the critical updates, so I assume it does not even have SP1, does that matter?
Back to the BIOS question.  One of the above replies suggested making some changes to the BIOS and those options are not there.  I tried the key combinations and they did not bring up new menu options either.  How much effect does the BIOS have on the SATA drive?  Does it need the update to make it SATA compatable as far as the options?  Sorry to be such a bother, but this is my first experience using the SATA that gave me a problem.  I put togther a system for my wife and used a SATA drive and everything was seamless.
ensure you have running XP with SP2. and sis chipset drivers are installed.

  • Do I need to install drivers for a sata drive?

I have K7N2 Delta2-LSR and it came with a sata raid driver floppy disk.  Mine is just a single drive on which I want to install Windows. I read some where that it is not needed during windows installation unless I want to setup a raid system. Is this correct? My sata drive shows up under the external device icon, the small green arrow icon on the system tray. Is it suppose to be like that or is it because I did not install the sata drivers during windows installation? Any advice please?

What brand and model of SATA drive are you using? I had two other posts on this issue because one model of Maxtor drive that I tried works fine and another model does not work at all.
My configuration is like yours, I currently only have one SATA hard drive connected to this machine. There are multiple PATA drives on the machine and they all work fine together.
Seeing your post made me do more research on my motherboard. Until now, I thought the SATA controller on this board was not capable of RAID. I know know it is, thank you silverferro and Stu

  • [Athlon64] CAN'T SEE SINGLE SATA DRIVE / K8T NEO no Promise controller

I have a K8t NEO -the cheapskate version with no PROMISE SATA controller or on-board Firewire
I have been running on XP SP2 on 2 IDE drives, everything is ok.  I added a SINGLE SATA drive and turned the VIA SATA controller on in BIOS. I did the MSI Live Update and have the latest VIA SATA driver, latest chipset, latest BIOS, latest EVERYTHING. At boot, the VIA SATA controller reports my Hitachi SATA as Channel 0  Primary"  in the SATA devices table.  Going into the SATA RAID menu it tells me "You can't make RAID with just one drive"  which is true, of course.  But the point is the controller SEES the drive.
I've run MSI Live Update and have the latest BIOS, latest SATA XP driver, latest EVERYTHING.
Windows XP doesn't see the SATA drive.
In XP  I see a VIA RAID CONTROLLER in Hardware / Device Manager  which is DISABLED.   When I right-click then click ENABLE on the VIA RAID CONTROLLER  the machine reboots immediately.  I tried safe mode, same thing.  I tried BIOS settings of "No PNP O/S Installed"  and "Yes PNP O/S Installed"  and reset the NVRAM.  No change.
I think there must be an IRQ conflict....  I have a sound card (on-board sound is turned OFF in BIOS) and AGP video card, and that's it- no WiFi NIC or anything else to eat up IRQ resources. I use the Realtek on-board ethernet.
I tried my Windows 98 partition and that booted, detected the new hardware (VIA SATA) and I installed the driver from the MSI CD  and Win 98 is happy with the SATA drive..... it sees the drive just fine.
How do I make Windows XP see the SATA drive?

Have you tried starting XP with CD and entering recovery, log on as admin and see if SATA drive is there? Remember to "F6" with a floppy drive of SATA drivers for
-XP-... I'm assuming you already have as you said all is uptodate.  When the boot BIOS for the VIA SATA apprears and you press "TAB" I believe it is, you can mess with the SATA functions. Sorry if does not apply to your compy or you've already done all this.... BTW you CAN run a RAID array with one HDD, at least thats what I did on my Promise controller.
In my Device Manager under Disk drives it looks like this (notes bracketed are noting position):
Promise 1+0 Stripe/RAID0 SCSI Disk Device (Bus Number 0, Target ID 1, LUN 0 (G:\ 1-160GB IDE Seagate/notice ONE drive)
    Promise 2+0 Stripe/RAID0 SCSI Disk Device (Bus Number 0, Target ID 0, LUN 0) (F:\ 2x200 SATA)
    ST3160023A (Location 1 (1) VIA IDE D:\)
VIA SATA RAID 0 SCSI Disk Device (Bus Number 0, Target ID 0, LUN 0) (E:\ 2x120 SATA)
    WDC WD800JB-00CRA1 (Location 0 (0) VIA IDE C:\)
Under the boards BIOS, is the SATA drive listed under the BOOT table??? In my system it lists the above 5 partitions (7 HDD's total), floppy, 2 CD/DVD drives, etc...
Oh also in Device Manager IS the VIA SATA controller appearing in the "SCSI and RAID controllers" tab??? I have set mine to just SATA before and of course now it says "VIA SATA RAID Controller"... for you it should read "VIA SATA Controller". Remember there are 2 different drivers for the SATA controller, one for SATA and one for SATA RAID. Look on your floppy disk or if you saved out the updated driver. I made a new floppy with the latest XP drivers. When booting from WINXP CD, and promted for "F6" and press it, later it will show you TWO different drivers after reading the floppy disk for XP. You obviously want the non RAID driver... hope that helps somewhat... g'luck

  • K9A2 Platinum nightmares - recognizing SATA drives

I'm trying to build a new system
Have a SATA drive that isn't being recognized on attempting to load Windows Vista Ultimate 64Bit
Do I need to load a SATA driver - if so - can anyone post the link please??
Does it have to be put onto a floppy???
    Cheers

PS I have back-pedalled from setting up a 4 disk SATA array in RAID1+0.....   will this be an issue....?
Maybe trying to run before I could walk....
If I can get it running on 1 drive I'll try that configuration.....

No - I haven't managed to install Vista Ultimate 64bit yet - but I'm determined I will - so please keep going with the help and suggestions!!!
It's a completely new build - every component is new
The box that the motherboard in did worry me slightly - it had a quick guide for the wrong motherboard...... so I'm hoping the supplier hasn't resent out a board returned as faulty......... there are some less than perfect suppliers out there
I have 4 brand new SATA drives (1TB)
Initially tried to set up as a SATA RAID 1+0 - only occasionally would the drives be recognized whilst trying to install
(And thought perhaps I was trying to run before I could walk - not tried any form of RAID before, and not used Vista before)
So then tried to set up on 1 SATA drive, all others not connected
And I tried this several different SATA ports - and several different SATA drives, including both the Promise and the SB600 ports
Then tried to set up on a brand new IDE drive  (500GB) with Vista Ultimate
Then gave up on Vista - to see if it would load XP....
So I am trying to install XP on the same brand new IDE drive.... and I'm now in the interminable wait for the drive to format the partition
Forgot how long that was with XP and IDE (especially on a large drive)
Installing Vista I get blue screens of death at numerous points in the install process - and I think I've seen every possible BSOD message now
So I am beginning to think it's a motherboard problem...
     >:(
Will let you know if XP installs
    Or not
If it does, is it easy to install Vista over the top??
    Cheers for the help

  • Question about using a SATA drive through an Epress34 card???

I have a basic question about OSX and how it treats a SATA drive hung from an Express34 SATA card. So OSX just treats any drive as a mounted drive as far as I know bbut what about when booting...
If, at boot up, I use the 'cmd C' option to select an external SATA dirve hanging off of an Express34 SATA card, will OSX see that drive as if it just were the internal drive in the MBP or is there some inherant difference between the real internal drive and any other SATA drive?
I guess the question is... does the cmd C option really just tell the OS to treat this drive as though it were the interal drive and boot from it (assuming the drive is bootable of course) or is ot doing something else.
If that is the case, why can't I use an external drive and install BootCamp on it, assumiong that I booted from this drive?
Is there a difference between an external SATA drive from an Express34 card and an external firewire drive?
    TIA,

  • SATA drive support?

I would like to add some SATA drives to my G4 as a backup scheme for Retrospect. What PCI controller should I get that works with Mac OS 9.2.2?
Or is there a Firewire (1394A) solution that I should consider?
    Gary

    >If it were my machine, I'd stick with firewire.
Me too. But I need the large capacity offered by SATA. I have a small army of 500 GB IDE disks and they are taking up a lot of desk space.
My ideal system would have a single Firewire dock with 1 or 2 bays in it populated with 1 TB disks. I can't find any vendors that make (or made) 1 TB IDE drives. Thus my desire for SATA.
    Your thiughts please.
