Inline editing on discussion board

I have a discussion board on which I have created a view to show only posts that I have made and switched on the inline editing option, but it doesn't give me the boxes to update the row. The inline editing works on a general list but not on the discussion
baord list. How do we get it to work?

You have to actually create a Datasheet View.
In the ribbon, choose the List tab and click Create View. In the resulting menu, choose Datasheet View. By default, the same columns will show in the view that are in the standard view. Click okay and you should be good to go.
For some reason, the Discussion Board requires a separate view to be created to be able to use Datasheet View.

I have a SharePoint 2010 site with two discussion boards. I added one additional field to each of the boards: a lookup to another list to link the discussions to individual projects. I need 2 different boards because they have different posting permissions
(one is open to all for comments, and one is open only to the project team to post but everyone can read).
When I go to the pages for each of the discussion boards, they work fine.
But I'm putting together a page for individual projects, and want to have web parts for both discussion boards on the same page, showing the discussions related to the selected project.
I am able to add one of the discussion boards to a web part in the page, but when I add the second discussion board to the page, the new web part contains:
One or more field types are not installed properly. Go to the list settings page to delete these fields.
Correlation ID: blah blah blah
I've searched for similar postings, but mostly I see this error message related to migration from 2007 to 2010 -- this is not the case here: I created both discussion boards, and the whole site, in SP 2010. I've also found this message related
to coding errors using SPQuery. I am not doing any coding here, just using the built-in SharePoint 2010 Edit Page -> add a web part -> select the discussion list. I tried doing it from SPD with the same result.

I figured it out. I was using ?FilterField1=fieldname&FilterValue1=value on the URL to the page to pick out one project number. The web part I was trying to add was for a list that did not have that particular fieldname. I didn't realize that would matter
since I was using the Connections -> Get Filter Values From to get my filter values from the main web part, which does have that fieldname.
I added a field with that fieldname to the other list and set a workflow to copy the lookup value of the project number lookup field into the new field. Now all is working fine. Sorry for the wild geese in my original question.

Unable to Customize SharePoint 2013 Discussion Board

Hi,
We are trying to customize SharePoint 2013 Discussion Board app and are unable to modify existing Flat, Subject, and Threaded views or create new views. Following are the error messages we are getting:
*** Error message when creating new views based on view types Subject, Flat, or Threaded:
TypeError: Unable to get value of the property '0': object is null or undefined
Note that when creating the view no options are available (only option to name and make default are available). The view created after display of this error message does not have any Columns, Sort, Filter or
other properties defined. Manually defining these properties does not make the view function as desired (Flat view is not flat).
*** Error message when editing existing default views Subject, Flat, or Threaded:
Cannot complete this action.
Please try again.
Troubleshoot issues with Microsoft SharePoint Foundation.
Note that this is nothing to troubleshoot or error number provided. The URL shows /_vti_bin/owssvr.dll?CS=65001. Also, the edit screen does not show any view property to change.
Note that both ability to edit existing views and create new views work in SharePoint 2010. This issue is with SharePoint 2013. Please guide to resolve this. View in other apps can be edited.
This issue is only with the Discussion Board app.

You will not be able to modify the default view in SharePoint 2013 i.e. Subject/Flat or threaded. However you can create a new view based on your requirement and use it.
When you try to create new view, the fields will not be available for you to select during creation of view, instead create a view with proper name, once the view is created, go back for modifying the new view and you will have the fields available for selection.
Note: Make sure you have mandatory CU installed on the farm.

Sharepoint 2013 discussion board item view (flat.aspx) throws js error after being migrated from moss 2007

After preforming a migration from moss 2007 to 2013 on-prem we have noticed that html tags are showing up in the discussion board posts. I have tracked the problem down to the flat.aspx page throwing a js error.
'SPAnimationUtility' is undefined - coming from the sp.ui.discussions.js file
this is what I see on the page:
The reply and edit buttons function fine. Its just that the html is exposed.
Anyone seen this before or have a clue as to how to solve?

As I remember there are a couple managed properties (metadata) that are used by the views that don't get created when you migrate a discussion board from a previous version. I don't remember the specific properties, but take a look at a new discussion
board in 2013 and compare the properties in the views and you will find them.

SharePoint 2013 Discussion Board lists wrong name in Reply

Using a basic SharePoint 2013 Discussion Board with Content Approval enabled. Because of Content Approval, all posts/replies must be approved before they are visible. The problem is that SharePoint references the "Modified By" column
in the Flat.aspx view when viewing a discussion thread.
For example, let's assume we have three employees:
Jaclyn - User who replied to main discussion thread
Ryan - User who replied to Jaclyn's reply
Brian - Admin w/ Approver rights to moderate comments
In the screenshot below, Ryan clicked "Reply" on Jaclyn's comment. Once Brian approved it, SharePoint displays the note "In response to Brian's post" instead of "In response to Jaclyn's post". It seems to be referencing the
Modified By column which updates to Brian's name once he approves it.
Is it possible to have SharePoint reference the correct name? This is causing confusion in our organization since Brian is not involved in the discussion topic at all. Thank you.

I could produce this issue based on your description.
And I also created another Discussion Board without Content Approval, and created a new discussion, then:
UserA replied to the main discussion thread.
Admin replied to UserA’s reply.
In Admin’s reply, it displayed “In response to UserA's post”.
Administrator edited the UserA’s reply.
UserB replied to UserA’s reply after Administrator edited.
In UserB’s reply, it displayed “In response to Administrator's post”.
By design, the ReplyToLink references the Modified By column of the reply when a user replys a existing reply.
When we enable Content Approval and the approver approves the reply, by default, the approver has changed the item, and the Modified By is changed to the approver. So, for your issue, it is normal.

Creating HashTag in sharepoint 2013 community discussion board

We are trying to create new HashTag in sharepoint 2013 community discussion board. But we are unable to do so. It is getting treated as plain text. We are able to use existing hashtag on same discussion board but not able to create new one. Is not that
a loophole in social feature of sharepoint.

Access Denied Error on replying to a discussion board Post using anonymous access in sharepoint 2013 .

We are facing issue while replying to a post in Discussion board using Anonymous access users in Sharepoint 2013.
WE are able to post a discussion using anonymous acess but not able to reply to the discussion post.
Steps Performed - :
1. Enabled Anonymous access at Web application Level .
2. In SiteCollection > Site Permissions > Anonymous Acess > Enable for List and Libraries .
3. Disable ViewFormPAgeLock Feature .
4 .Go to Discussion board List >Permissions > Break Inheritence .
5 . Given Add ,Edit and View item permission to anonymous users .
6 . "Create and edit all items " Discussion Board Library Advanced Settigs .Infact ,Neither option is working .
Please suggest if we are missing soming .Please help

Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that when you went to the Discussion List and selected the thread then view the list in “Flat” view, the Spelling ICON was greyed out.
By design in SharePoint, when you view the list in “Flat” view, the ribbon would be as below:
Only when you add a reply and move the mouse to the content, the Spelling ICON will appear.

You are probably on the Safari Category page.
From there, you need to click the Safari Forum page.
On Forums there is an option to Post New Topic.

Permission Levels for Newsfeed or Discussion Board

Hello,
I only want to allow people to view only, download (documents) and have a discussion or provide feedback (I don't want them to edit or add/make changes, etc.). I reviewed the permission levels and "Read" would be an ideal option but it doesn't
allow them to use Newsfeed or Discussion Board. I don't want to give them permission to "Contribute" or "Edit" (which allows them to use the discussion board & newsfeed but it also allow them to edit and make changes to the site).
Can you please help me?

Hi Vann, not sure if you're giving them contribute permissions to the site or just on the discussion list, but I would give them read access to the site and contribute access to the discussion. Then go into the advanced settings for the discussion list
and check the "create items and edit items that were created by the user." This will prevent them from editing items other than ones they created.

Adding portions from discussion boards

On my website I want to add clips or posts from various discussion boards. One way I tried was to take a screen shot or picture of it. I imported it like a photograph, but it was too small. ANy other suggestions? (I am hesitant to just put a link incase the site goes down or away.)

Double-click your image to open it in the Preview app, scale it up and save it. Then you'll have a larger version to put in your iWeb site.
Also, Picnik is a free, web-based image-editing app which is easy to use.

Firefox updated to latest version, now I can not enter data in a discussion board dialog box in Blackboard. IE8 had same problem, change to compatability mode and IE functions. Any fix for firefox?

Thanks to everyone here, I read a gazzilion messages before i was brave enough to start and it paid off.
Fitted board (£29 from stal.com) fitted duron, downloaded bios 3.6 and installed. set core voltage in bios to 1.55 and multiplier to 11.5x .Fit xp1800 - Boot and then go back into bios to set processor at 1.5v(Note: 1.5v not available until first boot with xp 1800)
Now going to try the fuzzy logic thingy.

Importing to Discussion Board Post from legacy source

Hi All,
Im sure im not the first to wonder or ask this question but here it goes.
We have recently moved out intranet to SharePoint 2013. We have rebuilt from the ground up using many of the out of box solutions as well as some third party apps and web parts however these is one aspect that is stumping us.
On our old intranet we use a SQL based forum/discussion board package which has
about ten years worth of posts, surveys, Q&As etc. As it is SQL based it is very easy for use to query and pull this legacy data however
we cannot find a way to import into SharePoint. We do not expect to import it all but would like to import at leas the last 12 months of submitted
data with at least basic fields like Title, description/content, tags, post date and post user. We do not mind other metadata being striped out like voting etc.
We have dug deep into the SharePoint database files to see if we can directly insert but
it is very complex and almost certainly not supported. We was also hoping for a discussion board data list view so we could bulk cut and paste. This is not ideal but would at least be a better option than manually inserting each post.
Does anybody have an idea where to start if at all possible.

All this means is that the rendering is slowed down by something in the design of the website. If it is a thread with over 500 posts, you probably will have difficulty viewing it, unless you have a high speed internet connection with low latency, enough hard disk space to cache the files, and/or view threads in tree mode. To use Tree mode, go to My Settings, and select Tree View under Topic Page View in the General SEttings.

So how big is your hard drive?
How much free disk space is there?
Have you tried to empty the browser cache?
Does this issue happen with short threads as well as long ones?
Do you have any system modification software such as Speed Download, PthHelmet, or other browser enhancement software?
Are you sure all your software is known to be Snow Leopard compatible?
