"Inner bevel" filter bug? When I use "hard chisel" a striped pattern appears. Why?
Hello,
Can you please help me out with this following issue.
In order to make some geometric shapes in my artwork look like "3D", i use the "Inner Bevel" filter and for this case, with a "hard chisel" parameter. The result shows also a stripped pattern, which I don't want. What's the cause and how do I fix this?

J, try right clicking the layer styles and chose Create Layers to seperate the highlight and shadow component of the bevel Emboss. Unclip the new layers from the shape by Alt (Opt) clicking the interface between the shape layer and highlight layer. Place a layer underneath the shape layer and fill it with black - you'll see how the highlight is constructed and extends way beyond the shape. Invert the black layer, and you'll see the same thing for the Shadow area.
Now try Ctrl (Cmd) clicking the Highlight layer, and you'll see that the lines apear as individual selections.
I don't know why it is the way it is, but perhaps Brett or Chris can explain? It has always been a source of annoyance to me, and that's for sure. Noel might have some ideas, as I can remember him speaking about something similar a while back.
BTW The only way I could get a screen grab that included the marching ants, was with the Windows 7/8 Snipping tool. You can leave it minimised on the task bar between snips. Really useful.

Query runs slower when using variables & faster when using hard coded value

My query runs slower when i use variables but it runs faster when i use hard coded values. Why it is behaving like this ?
My query is in cursor definition in a procedure. Procedure runs faster when using hard coded valus and slower when using variables.

How to make sharp inner beveled corners?
I am wonder if it is possible, when using the bevel and emboss tool in the layer style menu, to make a sharp inner corner?
I was working on creating a frame using hard chisel bevel - it makes the outside of the frame have a sharp corner, but the inside is rounded. See sample image at:

I was trying to apply the bevel to the frame, but obviously I need to do this in two steps.. one layer for the outer bevel, and another for the inner. It needs some tweaking.. even in the example you give Noel, there ends up being a very thin white line around the inner bevel. More noticable when working with a larger image. Looks like I will need to make the inner box slightly larger to overcome this.

btw.. slightly off topic.. how did you manage to include images in your post? I had to link to an external site to show my image. When I clicked on the camera icon in this post dialog window, nothing happens.. I get a status message at the bottom of my browser that says 'error on page' I am using IE8 with Win7. I do notice however, that I can insert an image using Firefox - is there some trick to getting it to work with IE8? I realize that clicking this presents a pop-up dialog, and I have pop-ups disabled in IE, but normally I can temporarily bypass this by holding the Control key down when clicking on a pop-up link, but in this case it does not help. Any idea? -
We share one PC running Windows XP. When he opens his account he keeps getting first in the lower right hand corner that the updater is safe then a message box comes up that says " Update Failed make sure another version is not running and restart" When I Open my account no such message appears-why? Who has Admin rights on that PC?
If you don't have Admin rights you probably don't have "rights" to update Firefox, thus don't receive the "update message".
Try opening Help > About Firefox and see if you get a message about the update. And while you're in that window see if it says Firefox 27.0.1 or just Firefox 27.0 .
As far as the "Update Failed make sure another version is not running and restart" message, if your User Account was running in the background and you had Firefox open, that could cause Firefox not to proceed with the update in your husband's Logon User Account. Firefox needs all Firefox user Profiles to be closed as part of the update process. The user Profile that is initiating the update will close automatically, but the process will hang if any other Firefox Profiles are running in the background. ''I have that happen frequently when I am switching between 2 Logon User Accounts in WinXP.'' -
IPhoto 11 bug when using external editor (Photoshop Elements)
In iPhoto 11, my iPhoto database is confused/corrupted whenever I edit a picture in my external editor (Photoshop Elements 8). I believe this is an iPhoto problem because the picture is not corrupted until I quit iPhoto try to re-open the edited version.
Steps I take:
1. Pick a file, and "Edit in External Editor". Duplicate of the file is made (ThisPic.jpg becomes ThisPic_2.jpg), and that duplicate is opened in PSE. I edit the photo in PSE, and hit Save - PSE updates ThisPic_2.jpg. I close PSE, go back to iPhoto, and I can do whatever I want to the file - double click to view larger, export, everything seems fine. When I pick "File | Reveal in Finder" and use either the "modified file" or "original file" option, they take me to ThisPic_2.jpg in the finder.
2. Close iPhoto
3. Re-open iPhoto
4. Now, that file seems to be corrupt in iPhoto. I can see the thumbnail image for ThisPic_2.jpg, but nothing else works. I double click on the file, and I get a black screen with a triangle and an exclamation point in it. When I try to export the file, nothing happens.
The interesting thing is when I go into "File | Reveal in Finder". When I pick the "modified file", it doesn't seem to find it - I am shown the root of my hard drive in the finder. But when I pick "original file", it takes me to ThisPic_2.jpg, and I can use preview to see that my edits are still there.
I copied that file to the desktop, re-imported it into iPhoto, and I can access that photo again through iPhoto - everything works, even after I close and re-open iPhoto.
I reported this through the iPhoto Feedback option. I thought I'd share what I found in case it helps anyone else.Welcome to the Apple Discussions. I get the same response when I follow your workflow. If you select the thumbnail of that photo and use the Photos ➙ Revert to Original menu option you will be able to view the photo in full size.
Evidently editing in iPhoto with an external editor puts the edits on the duplicated original file and puts that file in the same Masters subfolder as the first file was imported into. Once iPhoto is restarted the links are messed up and the Revert gets rid of the "edited" link and keeps the link to the file in the Masters folder.
It definitely is a bug. However, it's not taking up more space on the hard drive than the edit that resulted in a modified file linked to the original file. There still are just two files.
Subsequent edits to the file with the external editor result is the edits being added to the file with no problems if iPhoto is closed and relaunched. The downside is that if you make 3 edits to the file you can't go back one edit. It's non reversible. The edited version can be deleted leaving the untouched original version.
Subsequent edits to the same file with iPhoto work as usual, with a modified version being created.
So Old Toad, I have just gone from iPhoto 9 to iPhoto 11 and step by step this is what is happening for me.
In iPhoto 9 if I selected photoshop to alter an image it created one duplicate version of the image and put that into the modified folder and that edited image became the image you would see in the events viewer. All very logical.
Now iPhoto 11 is doing the same for me but is creating multiple duplicates ie. everytime I select photoshop to edit an image. One image I edited recently has now got 6 versions in the library. If that is the way iPhoto works then that will be fine as it is doing it's job for me but the caviat is have I got 6 times the memory space being used up or does it just appear that way? If the memory space useage isn't being increased then I am OK with this new way of doing things but if the memory space is being used up then it is a fiasco - especially as apple are concentrating on writing their systems to use up less space than before in line with current thinking.

SimonThe optimizer has, well, optimized out the row_number because you never refer to its value in the outermost query.

I have a WD 2 tb hard drive that I want to use to back up my Mac Pro quad core. How do I create a back up startup disk? Also, when I used Time macine, it only backed up users and not the system or library folders. Ideas?

Time Machine should be enough to make a backup of your files. Also, it should back up all folders, so open System Preferences > Time Machine > Options, and make sure that there are no folders included in the excluded items list.

Trouble with slow Macbook Air. I have first generation MacBook Air and have a hard time keeping hard drive from being full. After trashing many docs, I have almost 5 gigs available, but mac is slow and I keep getting color wheel when I use Mail. I'd like to install Lion, but now I'm afraid it will slow down my machine even further. Do I have enough free hard disc space? Is Mail problem related to free hard disc space? Thanks for your help!

When to use Nested Class/Inner Classes ?
I am not very clear, when to use nested/inner classes..
The scenario is :-
class ABC
//ABC need to store multiple instance of class XYZ
class XYZ
int member1;
int member2;
One approach is
class ABC
class XYZ
//vector of class XYZ instances is stored in class-ABC
or another approach is Class XYZ can be in separate JAVA file.
Query:-
1) Is there any difference between nested or Inner class...or are they same?
2) When should they be used....Is it good to use in above scenario.
3) What are the disadvtanges/advantages of using the Nested

above scenario.To write an inner class is a design decision. Do other classes need to know about the class XYZ or not? Do the XYZ class need to know about the inner working of the ABC class? How complex is the XYZ class etc.

has anyone had this kind of error?
I am using IBOT, and I set Schedule_ to Start Date=21/09/2009, Time of Day=08:00, Set Time Zone=GMT+01:01, and Recurrence_ to Every 1 week(s) on MON.
When I look overview of this IBOT, everything is fine, but when I go Show IBOTs acting on my behalf Next Run is not date that I had set. And IBOT is not running in time that he should. But when I set Recurrence_ Daily Every 7 day(s) every thing is OK. IBOT is running and Next Run shows correct date and time.
ThanksThis looks the same as bug 5539348 "Schedule an iBot to run immediately and weekly, the immediate run doesn't take place". According to that bug when you say start immediately and run every 1 week you are actually saying start the schedule now not start the ibot?! So a schedule is created in the scheduler to run your ibot every week on Mon but it does not run it immediately.
I think this is a bug with the weekly schedule though as setting it to 7 days seems to fix it. The bug database seems in infer that later releases of 10g fixed this problem so it might be worth upgrading to a newer patch release if it becomes a problem and seeing if this fixes it.
