Inquiry about M71KR-E and Windows

I'm new to UCS so not all the familiar.  I have a few blades with the M71KR-E in them and am installing Windows on them.
1) I have on interface going to fabric A and the other interface going to fabric B.  When I install Windows it sees both network interfaces, but I was wondering how to team them within the operating system.  Do I have to go to Intels site and download appropriate drivers and teaming software since it sees the interfaces as Intel 82598EB 10 Gigabit AF Dual Port adapters?
2) Also Windows doesn't apparently have a driver for the fiber channel portion of the M71KR-E as they show up as unknown devices.  Where do you get the drivers for the fiber channel controllers?
Thanks.

Russ
I will just add some more color to what Robert mentioned.
In UCS from the adpater you cannot do active/active teaming. This is because the FI's are not vPC peers.
So for teaming you will have to use active/passive, ALB, SLB etc (and not 802.3ad).
Now to achieve teaming of failover capabilities there are 2 approaches.
Both are fully supported and you can take either.
Background on the M71KR-E or Q (also referred to as the Menlo for the FCoE ASIC) -
If you look at the attached diagram, a M71KR is characterized by 2 Ethernet PCI devices (the Intel 82598) and the FC chip from Qlogic or Emulex(depending on what flavor of the CNA you are running).
These PCI devices (2 ethernet and 2 FC) is what the OS sees in the device manager.
The 2 ethernet devices will be Local Area Connection#0 and #1 as seen in the network properties.
The card also has 2 DCBX ports which use the baclplane traces to connect to the IOM-A and B respectively.
By default, Local Area Conenction#0 is wired to DCBX0 while #1 to DCBX1.
It is important to note that the Intel PCI devices are not wired directly into the physical ports. They go through the "Menlo FCoE" ASIC.
Now regarding teaming -
Approach #1 (what has traditionally been done)-
You create a SP and set up 2 vNICS going to A and B Fabric with Fabric Failover disabled choosing the VLAN.
You download the proset teaming driver on the blade running windows for example. You unpack and install it.
You create a team and choose Active/Passive (no 802.3ad).
It creates an interface "Team#0" and you assign an IP to it. It will do active/passive amongst Local Area Connection #0 and #1.
If DCBX0 fails (and was the primary path), the driver will go via LocalArea Connection #1 (DCBX1) and vice versa.
You are correct in stating you assign an IP to Team#0 and not the Local Area Connection#0 or #1 and hence you have 1 IP subnet.
Approach #2 (Using fabric failover unique to UCS) -
You create the SP and setup 2 vNICs going to A and B with Fabric Failover enabled (so they will be A-B and B-A) choosing the VLANs reqd on both.
In this case the OS again will show you the 2 network devices Local Area Connection #0 and #1.
This is where the seamlessness of the solution comes in. There is *no* teaming driver to be downloaded/configured.
You assign an IP to Local Area Connection #0 for example 10.x.x.x.
This will go via DCBX0 ..Now if there is an issue upstream on Fabric A, the Menlo ASIC will transparently redirect Local Area Connection#0 to DCBX1 giving you active/passive. If Fabric A uplink is gone lets say, your Local Area Connection#0 will still stay up and is now going via Fabric B. If Fabric A comes up, the system reverts it back to its original path.
In this case you could potentially assign another IP subnet to Local Area Connection#1 for example 20.x.x.x and use that too which will go via DCBX1.  DCBX0 and DCBX1 are backing each other and is being done by Menlo amongst other things.
So in this case failover is provided as part of the fabric. No teaming software version issues, nothing to configure, just a checkbox in the SP.
It works indepedently of the OS so for Windows/linux etc ..behavior is same. This is recommended for the flexibility it offers.
Fabric Failover is only available on the M71KR and the M81KR (the architecture of the 2 cards is different though).
Hope it helps
Thanks

  • About Parallel , IDM and Windows 7.

Hi.I'm new to apple products. This is my first time using macbook as i had been a loyal user for windows. My question is about parallel 9.I own a 13' Macbook air with 128GB SSD and 4GB RAM.Is it going to work with Parallel and Windows 7 ?Should i get Window 7 or 8 ?Is it going to be so laggy since my MBA isn't that powerful.I'm confused whether to use Bootcamp or Parallel.I had already googled through so many reviews but it is confusing. My only purpose to use Windows is just to use IDM ( Internet Download Manager). Can anyone helps me ? Thanks.

    Hi,
1- This is normal behaviour. WHile your MBP is capable of running SNow Leopards 64-bit kernel by default it is set to use the 32-bit kernel of SL.
Have a read here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3770 and here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4287
2- SInce you are about to use Parallels with Windows 7 I would suggest to get the 32-bit version.
With Parallels 64-bit Windows would be only neccessary if you have to use WIndows programs that need 64-bit WIndows and/or use more than 4GB of RAM.
But since the hardware ressources are shared between OSX and Parallels WIndows and you "only" have 4GB RM you should not assign more than 2GB RM to Parallels WIndows.
i386 only means that the OSX (Darwin) kernel is meant to run on Intel processors.
    Regards

  • Questions about Lumia Line and Windows Phone 8

hey , i am using Nokia 701, a Symbian smarphone i love very much, but would like to know more about the WP OS and how it fares against it. If u have answers for the questions below or even better - if u own a Lumia 720, which i find interesting, please give ur opinions.
    1. There are many GPS Apps in Android which still havent been ported to WP8. Nokia 701 has , in its native browser, GPS functionality, so when i enter GPS enabled websites, I can share my location to them on my Nokia 701, and also using the Opera Mobile browser.
Does the Lumia 720 have GPS enabled BROWSERS ?
    2. Second question - the thing i LOVE about symbian is that Whatsapp is always connected and so - messages are immadietly delivered, faster than android even, i believe.
If u keep internet connection ON with the WP device and  a friend sitting next to you will message you over WhatsApp, how fast will it reach,
when the app is closed and when the app is in the background?
And is there any difference between having the screen locked or unlocked ?
I hate it when there's a delay in recieving messages. It happens with android and some iPhones.
    3. The Lumia 720 has 512 mb of RAM. Does it limit downloading of apps, meaning you simply cant download them because they cant work on the device?
And do you feel LAGS with apps who should work with your 720?
I'd love hearing all of your thoughts. This will help not only me but other users who read this in time to come and maybe even Nokia when they perform R & D .

Phone also monitors your movements, usage, and sends to the owner -Microsoft. You don't own the phone or controls to privacy, Microsoft claims to do that for you. It also uploads your device contacts somewhere once you open an account in order to use the phone and the WP8.1 OS. THINK TWICE
lol.. Try again, every app which wants to access location or other data needs to get permission from you to do so. Also you have the choice to allow the phone to send information to Microsoft during the first set up of the phone..

  • A Few Questions About Parallels 5 and Windows 7

    Hey guys!
So, I am taking a computer programming class that requires Windows, just so we can all be on the same screen at the same time (lame, I know). Anywho, I have a Mac, so my teacher provided me with a log-in to MSDNAA, to get Windows 7 for free, and he gave me Parallels 5.0 for free as well. (go community colleges!)
    A few questions:
1- I am running Snow Leopard right now on my 2009 MacBook Pro, and my processor is the 64-bit processor, but after running the command uname -a I discovered that my Kernal is loading in the 32-bit mode. Is this normal? Shouldn't it be running in 64-bit mode?
    2- Which Windows 7 should I get, the x64 or x86 (32-bit or 64-bit)?
    Thanks for any/all help!

  • Need advice about Mac Pro and Windows networking

I currently have 2 machines at work: One HP Windows PC (high configuration) and a PowerMac G5 2GHz dual. I'm basically close to purchasing a new Mac Pro to replace both machines but need some advice. I do the majority of design work on the Mac. However I need the Windows PC to also do some design work but mainly use it to connect into the windows network at work. Basically I need to be able to access the network drives (which are set up with Novell Netware, with IPX turned off), Novell GroupWise email system and connect to the internet through the LAN. Can I do this with a Mac Pro, with either Bootcamp or Parallels? Is there any sacrifice in terms of performance in using Bootcamp or Parallels? The end result I want is similar to what I am doing at the moment - at the moment I use a PC to network and the Mac to design, side by side with each other. What I want is to do this from one machine, not two. (I also need the PC side of things as I need to use some software that isn't available on the Mac, eg. bespoke databases that run on PC). Is it easy to network under Bootcamp/Parallels? What pitfalls are there that I need to be aware of?

When your running Windows via bootcamp, you are essentially Running windows on a PC architecture. You will have all the same capabilities that you have now.
When you use Parallels to run Windows, you are running Windows as a virtual machine running within the confines of the Mac OS. The advantage is that you can run multiple OS's at the same time, and easily share files and data between them. The disadvantage is that the OS running within Parallels has a slightly performance hit, meaning you are not running as fast as the bootcamp version, but the performance hit is very slight. The only place that Parallels is lacking at the moment is in support of 3D or accelerated graphics. That is Parallels currently cannot make use of a graphics card 3D capabilities or advance GPU options. Parallels has stated their intent is to provide better graphic card support in the near future.
With all this in mind, I don;t see any reason why you cannot use Parallels for your Windows networking needs, and the Mac for your design needs, all at the same time. You will need of course to ensure you have enough RAM to support both OS's if you intend to run them at the same time.

  • Question about Photoshop 7 and Windows 7

The harddrive on my old computer crashed.  I had Photoshop 7 on this computer.  I recently purchased a new laptop(windows 7 64 bit).  Is it possible to install Photoshop 7 on my laptop?  Also, can more than one version of Photoshop (i.e. Photoshop 7 and Photoshop CS5) reside on the same harddrive?
    Thanks
    Cari

Also, can more than one version of Photoshop (i.e. Photoshop 7 and Photoshop CS5) reside on the same harddrive?
Yes, they can. All installs are independent. As to whether PS7 will install and run on W7 I cannot tell from personal experience, but from reading other people's threads it seems to work for some, but not for others. In any case, nothing is lost by trying...

  • Question about video driver and window manager

    Dear All:
I have been using Arch for a couple of months now and I am absolutely amazed by how top of the line this system is.
Congratulations and thank you to all the developers!
A couple of questions for anybody interested in these topics:
    1) Do people usually use open-source video drivers, or proprietary? What are the advantages/disadvantages of either solution, in terms of stability and performance? (I have an ATI Radeon Mobility graphics card on an IBM T43 laptop).  Also, I use dual-head with an external NEC lcd display using MergedFramebuffer, but I notice that the external monitor is not set completely well.  Looking closely at the black background standard in Openpox, for example, I notice a constant flickering of the pixels.  Can it be because I am not using the proprietary ATI driver?
    2) What is, in your opinion, the fastest and most reliable window manager?  I wonder whether somebody has run objective comparisons.
I fell in love with wmii recently, but managed to crash it twice when I tried to run kmail (perhaps because this application is not wm-independent?).
Also, applications seem to respond the fastest in fvwm on my system!? Isn't wmii supposed to be the fastest, being the lightest?
    Thank you for your help!

Recently, iTunes upgraded.  My 7th generation iPod is now not recognized and I cannot sync.  The troubleshooting talks  about being visible in Windows (iPod is invisible)  No other options and nothing about windows 8

I have had similar issues with mine, happens mainly if I transfer songs and then decide to disconnect my iPod to listen to them with my IEMs (I use Interenet Explorer in my case and it is not neccessarely up when this happens, so I seriously doubt it is an issue conencted to the web browser). I have no patience for this so my trick is I try to eject it from iTunes, if that does not work, then I bring Windows explorer up, right mouse click on the iPod mounted drive and select Eject. It gives me the same warning but there is a third button selection called Continue. When I choose that it just disconnets the drive anyway and the iPod is finally disconnected. It seems to work each and every time I do it so this solution is fine for me. Would be intersting to see what the real root cause of this is because I started getting this problem with the newer iTunes 11.

Hey! I have had an Ipod touch for about 7 years and it has always worked! but for some reason i plugged it into my laptop and my computer is recognizing that it is plugged in but my itunes isnt what do I do?

    See

    - I would start with
Removing and Reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows XP
    or
Removing and reinstalling iTunes and other software components for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8
However, after your remove the Apple software components also remove the iCloud Control Panel via Windows Programs and Features app in the Window Control Panel. Then reinstall all the Apple software components
    - Then do the other actions of:

Hmm, that's some sort of MIDI Arpeggiator setup in your environment. Strange that you don't know it, this has to be custom-installed, it is not part of the standard setup.
You can do two things about it:
1.unlock your current screenset (shift-L), then close the (Bass Driver) window, then relock the screenset (shift-L). Next time you open up this project you won't see the Bass Driver, but it is still in the project.
    2. You can remove the whole page: open the Environment (cmd-8), then go to the dropdown menu arrow top left of the Environment window and select the Bass Driver layer. If it is selected, dropdown again and choose Delete. Now Save your project under a different name (Save As...), so that you still keep the Bass Driver setup in the original project. If you don't need to keep it, you can simply Save.
