Install JavaDB with no root access?

I cannot access my Linux server as root. That means that I cannot execute files. Is it possible for me to simply upload the JavaDB files and make it work as a database? Install it without root access?
How about MySQL? Can I also do the same (just upload the files to install it, not having the root access on Linux server)?

Of course. It's just a collection of jar files and you can configure (per application, in fact) where the DB itself is to be found as well. See the documentation.

  • Does managing Oracle 10g RAC with ASM require full root access?

We currently have three entirely separate support areas, Unix, Storage and DBA. We're now considering using Oracle 10g RAC with ASM and as part of the assessment trying to work out if we can still draw similar support boundaries. I know that installing RAC and configuring ASM requires root access but will DBA continue to need root access to manage & support RAC? If so, does anyone know if the commands they need can be RBAC'd or if we just need to share root access going forwards. I've had a look at a number of docs including http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/rac.102/b14197/toc.htm. which is fairly informative but none of them seem to mention the requirement for root access on Solaris. I'm guessing they just assume that it's available, but that's not generally the case in our environment.
    All advice / info welcome!

I would have thought that the only reason you would need root access once RAC and ASM had been set up would be to add more disks to the ASM configuration. This would be needed to change the ownership on the raw LUNs or to make additions to metasets (SVM/Oban) or diskgroups (VxVM/CVM). Beyond that, I can't imagine needing root access.
I'm sure others will chime in if they can think of other reasons!

Restore from the backup you had prior to installing Mavericks.
However, the upgrade should not have altered your partition scheme. Did your erase and format the drive prior to upgrading?

I want to install Flash on a computer with no internet access.  When I tried to download, I got a message that Flash is already installed.  Yes, it is, on my PC.  I want it on my laptop, too.  How do I accomplish this?

Download the Adobe Flash Player offline FULL installer directly by right clicking one of the following links and selecting "Save target as" (IE), "Save Link As" (FIrefox) or "Download Linked File As" (Safari).
Flash Player 12.0.0.44 for ActiveX (Internet Explorer)

My macbook pro has a virus/trojan that is resetting the EFI via apci and it is getting root access privileges. It seems to be creating multiple aliases that bundle with rogue apps and preferences so it is very difficult to control or fix. Please help..It all stems from the "about donwloads" PDF which kicks off the restructuring of the OS..

Well given the fact that it is not just myself who is infected and also that this is my 3rd macbook in 1 year because the other 2 efi's were compromised to the point where they were unusable, and also that I must've been to the mac store no less than 100 times in a year for these issues, I beg to differ. Here is what I can show you. This has been ongoing for over a year now.
I will try and show you as much as I can.
    1) Here is what I see when I run mount from terminal:
/dev/disk0s2 on / (hfs, local, journaled)
devfs on /dev (devfs, local, nobrowse)
map -hosts on /net (autofs, nosuid, automounted, nobrowse)
map auto_home on /home (autofs, automounted, nobrowse)
    localhost:/4zOta2Q9FMiMnRjTROIbhU on /Volumes/MobileBackups (mtmfs, nosuid, read-only, nobrowse)
Why on earth is /Volumes/MobildBackups my localhost is beyond me. I don't use iCloud and Mobile me is obsolete.
    2) Here is what I show when I run ls -al /*/*/*/*.efi from root
    -rw-r--r--  1 root  wheel  994464 May  1 00:33 /System/Library/CoreServices/boot.efi
    -rw-r--r--  1 root  wheel  994464 Oct  2  2012 /usr/standalone/i386/boot.efi
    -rwxr-xr-x  1 root  wheel  115716 Dec 13 14:08 /usr/standalone/i386/tmbootpicker.efi
As far as I know my boot.efi should not change everytime I boot my machine.
    3) Here is something very interesting. When I run cd /dev followed by ls -al look what I have;

  • Old IMAC with 10.5.6 OSX. Forgot Administrator password. Started up from OSX install disc 1 and selected password reset from utilies in Installer. But HD icon doesn't show up. (Only install disc and admin root available:no good). What can I do?

Old IMAC with 10.5.6 OSX. Forgot Administrator password (which I had already changed.) Followed instructions as per http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1274
Started up from the original OSX install disc 1 and selected "Password reset" from "utilies" in Installer. But HD icon doesn't show up. (Only install disc and admin root available:no good as the support website underscores: Important: Do not select "System Administrator (root)". This is actually the root user. You should not confuse it with a normal administrator account.).
    What can I do?
    Thanks for your suggestions. Antonio

Not familiar with that version of OS X but try using Terminal and type in resetpassword. If that brings up a password reset screen is your original username shown?

  • WSUS throwing 13002, "Client computers are installing updates with a higher than 25 percent failure rate. This is not normal."

    Hello,
Within the past two months our WSUS Server started throwing error 13002, "Client computers are installing updates with a higher than 25 percent failure rate.  This is not normal."  We currently have 252 computers with errors in WSUS,
and 33 updates with errors.  We have never had issues up until two months ago.  If you keep rebooting the machine, and keep running updates, they eventually all install.  I believe I will see the machines with errors go away as the weekly scheduled
WSUS install runs over and over, and the machines reboot.
    - We run IE8 in our environment and sometimes IE9.
    - We have 300 clients, all running Windows 7 SP1 x64.
    - Our WSUS server is running on Server 2008 R2.  The WSUS build number is 3.2.7600.262.
    - We created an alternate WSUS 4.0 server on Server 2012, and redownloaded all updates.  We put one client on it and it is showing errors on 3 updates, KB890830, KB931125, and KB2917500.
    - Clients are throwing errors 800F0902, 80242016, and 80070005.
    - I've noticed something with the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder on the clients.  When an update runs and fails, there is a "Install" folder created inside this folder.  If you try to open it after the failure you get
"Access Denied"  If you reboot the machine, the install folder goes away.  (I assume this is a temp folder created to run updates).  I've checked the permissions on this folder on various machines and all seems normal.  I think
this is the root of the problem, and why we need to keep rebooting to get all of the updates to run.
    - I tried deleting the Software Distribution folder on a client after stopping the update service, then restarting the update service.  The folder redownloads but the client still throws errors.
    - I've gone through our Group Policies looking for anything that can cause this and found nothing.  We've created a test OU blocking inheritance, and only applying a WSUS policy in it to make it get the updates internally.  I then rebuilt multiple
machines using Dell KACE, and still had failures.
    - We run SEP 11 and 12 on our clients.  I've tried removing the AV, making sure the firewall was off, etc.  It still throws errors.
    - I've spoken with our network team, and installed wireshark on a few clients looking for network errors and found nothing.
    - I've tried various Dell KACE scripted installs on test machines (erasing and rebuilding the machines from scratch), after which I run Windows Updates from WSUS.  They have thrown errors.
    - I've rebuilt a machine using Dell KACE, undomained it, then ran updates externally from WSUS going to Microsoft's site, and I'm still getting errors.
    - I've tried removing all software from the Dell KACE build to where it is just installing the OS and I'm still getting errors.
    - I tried taking a plain Windows 7 x64 DVD and installing that on a test machine, then without domaining it and without installing any other software, running updates from Microsofts update site.  This seems to work, althrough it does throw some errors
but I believe those are related to having to reboot your machine in order to complete the updates (I can't remember that error code at the moment).
Has anyone else been experiencing this?  Any suggestions as to how I can fix this?

    Hi,
    Error 800f0902
Please try the method in this thread:
    Error
    Code: 800f0902
    Error 80242016
If you receive Windows Update error 80242016 while checking for updates, it might be caused by a connection interruption between your computer and the Windows Update servers.
    80070005
    Usually means access denied
Since it worked perfectly for a while, did you make any change on the server? Any applications new installed on clients?

  • Ability to install Studio 10 without root privileges

My group is currently using Forte Developer 6 to develope on Sun Blade 2500 machines running Solaris 8. I would like to use the trial version of Sun Studio 10 to show my group the performance improvements recieved by upgrading compilers. I've downloaded the install packages, but found that root privileges are required to run the install (even when trying to install in my own workspace). Is there any way I can install Studio 10 without having root privileges? I work for a fairly large company where it is almost impossible to get root privileges even for developer machines to do any install. Finding someone who does have root privileges and is willing to do the install seems even more difficult. Anyway, any and all help would be greatly appreciated!

Unfortunately, root privileges are required for installing, updating, or uninstalling any available release of Sun Studio. The reason is that the product is installed as packages, which requires root privileges to update the Solaris package database. Using packages and root-only access ensures that an installation is identifiable and consistent (except for mistakes made by people with root access). Supporiting the product is difficult when there is no way to know what is actually installed.
Nevertheless, the ability to install as an ordinary user is a frequently-requested feature. We are looking a ways to provide this capability in a future release.

  • Makemkv requires root access? [SOLVED]

Okay. I've been running into a problem with makemkv and was wondering if anyone else had run into it and solved it. Basically, I have to run makemkv as root or with sudo. If I run it as a normal user, I get a dialog telling me "Application failed to initialize" which isn't very helpful. I installed it using the AUR package, but I get the same results if I grab the source and build and install it as my normal user to my home directory, so I don't think that it's a problem with the AUR package.
My guess is that there's a permissions problem somewhere, but I have no clue what it could be. I've used makemkv under other distributions before and never had this problem. I even tried an older version of makemkv which I know worked fine in OpenSuSE with a normal user. But in Arch, it doesn't work without root access.
So, I'm fairly certain that something requires root access in Arch that didn't in OpenSuSE. If anyone has any clue as to what setting I need to tweak, or which file I have to change permissions on, or whatever it is I need to do to make makemkv work as a normal user, it would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Problem solved. The issue was that /dev/shm wasn't world writable. With /dev/shm world writable, makemkv works just fine as a normal user.

  • Root access question

I have seen from some other postings that there is supposed to be a root password that is common to the N900. However when I try to use it, it doesn't seem to work. I see a lot of people suggesting the use of rootsh, but surely the same functionality should be achievable by just using sudo su root?
So, if there is one root password for the N900, isn't that a security hazard and consequently we should all be changing ours to something we choose?
    Thanks for your help.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I have changed my root password, because I do development and require SSH access TO my phone.. but I would not be surprised if a default phone had no root password.. ie password authentication for root is disabled (this is not the same as having a null password)
There is, by default, no user authentication way into the n900.. so the root password is irrelivant..
You could change root's password, but you would need root access to do so... the way root access is enabled normally is via "sudo gainroot"
This command is disabled normally.. It can be enabled by putting your device into R&D mode (which is not recommended and my make your device unstable) or by installing the rootsh package
sudo su is not supported because it is not allowed in the sudoers file..
sudo gainroot IS allowed in the sudoers file.
    So, to answer you question..
the easiest way to enable root is to install rootsh (which patches gainroot to allow acces with or without R&D mode)
changing the root password can be done after you've done that, but unless you are planning to install a root service with authentication, it isn't particularly relevant.. DO do this if you plan to use openssh-server

  • Using a package manager w/o root access

I do a lot of scientific programming at work on different servers with out of date CentOS repositories and without root access. To get the libraries I need and to keep them up to date, what I'm doing now is compiling every program I need from source on every computer I use, and never updating the software.
Is it possible to a package manager to operate in $HOME without root priviledges? For intsance, could I install yum (CentOS package manager) into $HOME or, even better, install pacman into $HOME and pull and update software from Arch repos into my $HOME directory? Or has anyone run into this problem and figured out a better way to install and update software?

pacman has a --root <path> option. Try that (I haven't).
Also, I don't know how you or the admins would feel about this but if you've got physical acces to the machines, anything is possible.
Specifically, you could use a Linux LiveCD to mount the root partitions of said servers and reset the root passwords (in /etc/shadow).
A less drastic approach would be to add your user(s) to /etc/sudoers with an entry like this
    Username ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD: /usr/bin/pacman

  • 10.7.1 root access gone

    Dear Admins and Readers
Under 10.7.0 Server I was able to activate the root user and I was able to login to my Mac Mini Server i7 as root.
Now after I did the update to 10.7.1 Server, this capability has disappeared . I'm able to du a "su root" with the coresponding password, but I'm nomore able to login through the login window.
    What's going wrong?
    Any idea?
Thank you in advance for anyones suggestions and help.
    Regards from Switzerland
    Thomas Thaler

    Hi Thomas,
I had the exact same issue but on a non-server Mac OS X 10.7 and later updated to 10.7.1. I was in a hurry and didn't want to spend the day to find a fix. I formatted the hard drive and reinstalled Lion from scratch making sure that root access via GUI was still working. I updated to 10.7.1, installed dev tools and everything is still working.
I've seen that you posted your question on Macintouch website, you could also post the additional info there. A good place to post is StackExchange (http://apple.stackexchange.com/).

  • [SOLVED] VirtualBox won't recognize host USB devices w/o root access

VirtualBox is currently unable to detect the host's USB devices without root access. When I try to add a USB filter with user permission, the menu says
    <no devices available>
but when I run VirtualBox as root, it detects the USB device, obeys the filter once added, and I can access the USB device from inside the virtual machine. Is there any way to get the same behavior from a non-root account?
This user account is part of the vboxusers group and I have guest additions installed.

Well, sometimes it's the truly silly things that get you. I rebooted and VB now detects the host USB devices with regular permissions. All of the device filters are now working except the one for my NTFS-formatted external HD. The filter will grab it from the host OS but I cannot access it in the guest. I read that VB used to have a problem with USB 3.0, but that seems to have been resolved in the latest version. Is there any other explanation for why this isn't working?

You are on Windows 2000, you do not have a "Firefox" button, and should consider yourself to be fortunate in that you still have menus and don't have to do anything to get the menus back instead of the "Firefox" button. (The same applies to Windows XP users).
Use the "File" menu to get to Import. You are not on Windows 7 or Vista, and don't have to put up with the nonsense added for Aero.
If you want the "Firefox" button you can get it with View -> toolbars -> (uncheck) Menu Bar. The menu bar and the "Firefox" button were supposed to be mutually exclusive (which is impossible in some cases without being incompatible).
Once you are using the "Firefox" button ...
Use the "Alt" key to view the menu bar (temporarily) containing File, Edit, View, History, Bookmarks, Tools, and Help. On Windows 7 and Vista, the menu bar was hidden by default in Firefox 4 and above. These menu items are more or less available under the "Firefox" button which has the most used of the built-in Firefox menu items available in a different format.
To get back to having menus again. "Firefox" button -> Options (second column) -> (check) Menu Bar
You can make '''Firefox 7.0.1''' look like Firefox 3.6.*, see numbered '''items 1-10''' in the following topic [http://dmcritchie.mvps.org/firefox/firefox-problems.htm#fx4interface Fix Firefox 4.0 toolbar user interface, problems (Make Firefox 4.0 thru 8.0, look like 3.6)]. • Using Creative Cloud on a desktop in a rural area with no Internet access

I have a Creative Cloud subscription for my home desktop. I will soon be participating in a photography workshop in a rural area with NO INTERNET ACCESS. I don't own a laptop and will be hauling my desktop to the place we're staying. I know the software is installed on the machine and I should be fine with using it without online access, correct? Am I also correct in thinking it won't be "seen" as being used on a second computer because while I use it on this trip I won't have Internet access and therefore no IP address?

    Hi there
The only thing that might cause you trouble is if your workshop is over a month long. While using applications downloaded from Creative Cloud, internet access is required once a month for a routine license check. Here's a snipet from the Creative Cloud FAQ:
    http://www.adobe.com/products/creativecloud/faq.html
Do I need ongoing Internet access to use my Creative Suite applications?
Because your Creative Suite applications are installed directly on your computer, you will not need an ongoing Internet connection to use them on a daily basis. However, you will need to be online when you install and license your software, and at least once every 30 days thereafter. The software will alert you when you need to connect to the Internet for a license status check.
A quick note: if the product is unable to verify your license at the 30 day mark, a 7-day grace period will begin. However, if you are not able to access internet within those 7 days, your applications will be blocked (Soucre: http://forums.adobe.com/message/4513667#4513667)
Regarding your second question - as long as you are using the same device you already have your applications installed on, you'll still only have one device registered to your account.
If you have any more questions, please don't hesitate to post here again.
    Cheers!
