Install on Firewire HDD?

Ok, Apple's support documents have not helped me with this question. Can you install Boot Camp/Windows onto a bootable firewire HDD? Apple says yes in one place and no in another, so which is it?
Thanks

Hi......
I need help too.
I have a 4 week old Apple mac with Leopard. Have installed Windows XP Service Pack 2 Version 2002 via Bootcamp and when I want to log into Windows the Screen freezes immediately you choose Windows Option and will not even open up the Windows Desktop!!. I have to switch off and can only get into and use Macintosh. Has any else had this problem? Have heard that it needs to be Windows XP Version(SP2) 2004. Not impressed!!
Can I get in to Windows from within Macintosh?

  • Installing a new HDD

Okay I have a 80Gb Firewire HDD and internal 80Gb HDD, the plan is to use CCC to backup the current 30Gb HDD to the FW one and make it bootable. Then swap out the 30 for the 80, Hook up the FW external HDD and copy back to the new internal 80gb HDD.
First is this a good idea, remeber I'll have the 30Gb HDD untouch waiting if there are any problem.
But I need to know how do I boot to the FW external HDD if I have a blank internal HDD, do I just boot from the installer CD and select the FW drive and re-boot to that?
    The iBook is running 10.3.9.

With the FireWire drive connected to your computer and Mac OS X installed on it, restart with the Option key held down, select the external drive in the list of disks, and then push the button with the straight arrow. Doing this won't change the computer's default startup disk, which can be done from the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.

    Hi ...
I've succesfully installed Win 7 64 Bit Ultimate in Bootcamp on my Macbook .
I've got all Windows device drivers installed just fine except,
that my WD My Book Studio External Firewire HDD keeps disconnecting all by itself .

On OS X the drive stays mounted / connected,
    it's just that Windows-side of things . ):
The Drive is formatted as NTFS,
so it should be readable / writeable by Windows . ))::

Are you using NTFS driver in Mac OS X to WRITE to your MyBook?
If so, switch to Paragon Software's. Demo is fine.
MyBooks are often trouble, though usually under OS X.
In Windows, do chkdsk on it.

  • Satellite A300-15M - Can I install a second HDD?

    Hi there.
I own a SatelliteA300-15M. I bought the laptop 2 years ago. I have already 250GB hard drive which came with the laptop. Recently I got my laptop serviced from local shop. I noticed that it has an additional slot for another hard drive. I saw a post that some of the A300/A305 laptops have the space for second hard drive but not the connectors.
If anyone owns A300-15M can they please tell me if i can install a second internal hard drive in my model? Is there a sure way to find if I can really install a second hard drive?

    Hello
    > but not the connectors.
So the case is claer: If you dont have a second SATA connector, you cant install a second HDD.
Check also the forum regarding such questions. The point is that one notebook series (e. g. Satellite A300) is always equipped with the same case but the hardware is different. So not all models have the same features. ;)

  • Satellite X200-245 can i install a second HDD

    on satellite X200-245 : can i install a second hard drive ?
    is it possible ?
There is a place for it but no sata connection on the mother board where can i find this connector

No you cannot install the second HDD because there is no HDD connector which would allows to connect the HDD to the mobo.
And No, its not possible to upgrade the mobo with such connector.
The X200 has the two HDD bays because some X200 support 2 HDDs and some dont support it.
Your X200 doesnt support 2 HDD

  • External Firewire HDD causes hangs on my Mac Pro & HDD lag using finder

External Firewire HDD causes hangs on my Mac Pro & HDD lag using finder.
I have an 2008 Mac Pro 8 core 2.66hz, 10GB Mem, ATI HD4870 with 4 internal 1 TB Drives. I have 3 external HDDs (2 USB + 1 FW400). The 2 USB HDDs are for Time Machine and backups.
The external FW HD is a 1TB bootable clone of my Internal 1 TB boot HDD.
I have 2 problems ... somethimes when using finder or opening a folder, copying files, starting or quiting a program, I get the spinning beach ball that seems to hang the Mac.
I power off the external FW HDD and everything starts to work. I get an error about the device going offline, I then power the FW HDD back on and all is good.
It seems the external FW Drive tends to hang the system. It occurs pretty frequently.
    Any recommendations?
The other issue is that when I use finder to go to a folder, I seem to have to wait for all these drive to spin up. You can hear them all start whirring.
is there a way to remove that lag?

If you recently moved to Snow Leopard you might look for new firmware for your external drive. I would also get DiskWarrior and run that on the external and consider programs like Drive Genius. You might also back it up and wipe it and restore the data. After that I'd consider looking at a new external.
Sleeping drives that take time to spin up after waking....I'd like to learn how to stop that myself. Be sure the Energy Saver in System Preferences is set to not put drives to sleep when possible. Even then my drives will go to sleep and I have up to 6 external added at times and they take quite a while to all spin up. I've never found a way to prevent that.
BTW...external USB drives on a MacPro? Really? Even for backup....

  • Is it possible to install a firewire bus in a new (2010) unibody macbook?

    Hi,
I have been offered a good deal on a firewire audio interface but unfortunately my macbook doesnt have any firewire ports. I have tried it out using a firewire/USB adapter with a powered USB hub but the macbook just disables the port saying it is drawing too much power. Is there any way i can install a firewire bus in my macbook? or is there some kind of adapter/cable that would solve the power problem?
    Thanks

    No.

  • IMac continuously beeps three times when FireWire HDD is attached

    Hi there,
Whenever I reboot my iMac while my external FireWire HDD is attached to it, it continuously beeps three times in a row. I detach it, and restart the iMac, and voila, it boots again!
Any ideas why it can't boot while my FireWire HDD is attached to it? It doesn't seem to be a RAM issue as is specified here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2674?viewlocale=en_US

It could be a firmware issue with the firewire drive.
Have a look at the article in this link

how do i get access to this ext firewire drive?
are there other issues that I should look for?
    thanks

Check the settings in the Finder's preferences, and whether the Disk Utility is able to see or repair the drive. If it still won't show up and doesn't need repair, click here and follow the instructions.

  • Firewire-HDD plugged to MacPro unmeant mounted on iMac via FireWire network

    Hi folks,
I am from Germany with the following problem.
I connected two MACs - Mac Pro (10.5) and iMac (10.6) - via Firewire for networking.
Now I bought a FireWire 800 HDD and plugged it into the MacPro for faster access to video-data. Unfortunately every time I turn on the HDD it is mounted on the iMAC???? I always have to pull out the FireWire network-cable from the iMac before. Than it works and the HDD is seen by the MacPro. After that I can plug in the Firewire Network-cable back into the iMac for work.
Is there a solution? Is it possible that it matters which port I use for network or HDD...??
    Thanks for help, Andy

    Hmmmmmm, it is really simple....:-)
1.) I have an iMAC with connection to Internet.
2.) I have an MacPro which has no connection to Internet and thats what I want.
3.) Sometimes I need to share Files between iMac and MacPro, so I have connected them permanent to a Mini-Network via FireWire.
4.) I work with FinalCut on the MacPro
5.) I bought a FireWire HDD for use ONLY with MacPro NOT to share it.
6.) I connected the FW-HDD to the MacPro
7.) I turn on the FW-HDD and it appears and is mounted ONLY by the iMAC what I DO NOT want.
    8.) I turn off the FW-HDD
9.) I disconnct the two Macs from FW-Connection
10.) I turn on the FW-HDD and it appears and is mounted on the MacPro what I WANT
11.) I connect the FW-Network back on, to share Files between the MACs - NOT from the FW-HDD, (it is ONLY for the MacPro Video) but from the internal drives.
    12.) So far, so good.
13.) Problem: I want to mount the FW-Hdd to the MacPro by turning it on without disconnecting the two Macs.
    Better????

  • External firewire hdd | no suspend mode?

    hi list!
i'm using an external hdd with an prolific 3507 chipset, which causes a few problems with apple mac os x 10.4. so finder hangs sometimes and freezes the whole sys. but it looks pretty good after 10.4.8 update.
unfortunately it doesn't go into suspend mode when i'm hibernating the mac mini. but the strange thing is, that this 'feature' worked before (shortly after i bought it), but stopped working after a kernel upgrade (i think it was 10.4.4). anyway it works with the usb2 connection...
any hints? does suspending your macs lead to a supend of the external firewire hdds?
mac mini 1.66 dc, 1 gb ram Mac OS X (10.4.6)

You  probably should re-post in the Boot Camp forum, this is where the Boot Camp and MS Windows folks hang  out.

  • How to install a second HDD in Stelllite P200D

I want to install a SSD and move my HDD into the slot for the second HDD. I can't find any document how to install the second HDD. Do I need special adapter or any HW to do that?
    kind regards Frank

    Hi
At the bottom of the unit you can find two HDD bays. Right?
But one of the bays does not contain any connectors? Right?
At the first look this might be a little bit strange but fact is that different Satellite P200/P200D models were available on the market with different motherboards.
Some would support a 2nd HDD but some units dont. But all models supports the same bottom covers and some people think that an 2nd HDD would be possible which is wrong.

  • What command do I type into open firmware to make it install from firewire

Hi All I am trying too get Leopard onto my G4 cube using the open firmware to fake the clock speed using the below:
For single CPUs, use the following three lines:
    dev /cpus/PowerPC,G4@0
    d# 867000000 encode-int " clock-frequency" property
    boot cd:,\\:tbxi
However, my installation is going to be via FIREWIRE so what command do I type into open firmware to make it install from firewire and not CD?
    Many thanks

    Hello,
I wanted to do exactly the same until I discovered LeopardAssist!! No need to bother with code lines! It works just fine and its free!

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
The hard drive is not formatted, and it must be formatted in "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" in order to install OS X.
Close the OS X installer, and go to Utilities menu (on the menu bar) > Disk Utility. Then, format your hard drive in "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" as Format > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html Finally, close Disk Utility and install OS X

  • Installing a Firewire port into a G3 IMAC

A G3 CRT IMAC with OS9.2 was donatd to our little cable TV station.
It has USB ports, but no Firewire ports. However there seems to be some sort of access expansion hatch.
Question: Is it possible to install a Firewire port on a G3 IMAC of this vintage?
We do community TV and would like to use it as a simple off-line editing computer.

If this is a tray-loading iMac, you might still be able to find one of Sonnet's Harmoni processor upgrades which also includes a Firewire port. But it's probably not worth the money unless you could find one really cheap. Newer iMacs with Firewire ports show up on eBay regularly for under $100.00, and eMacs frequently appear well under $300.00.
