Install on USB - for i686 and x86_64 Questions

I'm installing on a USB flash drive for portable use everywhere without lugging a laptop or even a netbook around.
The wiki at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/In … B_key#Tips says: "For the most versatile compatibility it is recommended that you install the x86_64 architecture with multilib support because it will run on both 32 and 64 bit architectures. "
Through Multiple installs, I can get 32 bit or 64 bit installation -- but not both.  Installing with 64 bit and multilib enabled (yes, all of the [mutlilib] section in /etc/pacman.conf is uncommented) enables the repository, but only for the odd package that requires 32 bit code;  there's no 'parallel' 32 bit install or abilitiy to "run on both 32 and 64 bit architectures."  Sixty-four bit with 32 bit multilib enabled can't be booted on a 32 bit machine.
A plain reading of the 'Tips' section mentioned above suggests one can run a portable USB-based system on both 32 and 64 bit hardware.  I am, sadly, unable to find any suggestions how to get this to work.
Where might I look for a solution?
Thanks!

I found the edit that put this info in the wiki: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php?ti … did=254699
64-bit w/ multilib will run both 32-bit and 64-bit applications, but it will run only on 64-bit hardware.
Maybe that's what the author meant. As it stands now, this statement is wrong.
fionn wrote:As a secondary followup question:  what kind of voodoo do they do on the dual-architecture install images?
I doubt there is any magic involved. The iso has both the 32-bit and 64-bit applications.

  • Making packages for i686 and x86_64

I have a number of packages which I use which are either not mainstream, or if they are, I compile a bit differently.
I distribute them amoung machines which are both i686 and x86_64 so the question is can I make them for both types of CPU at the same time or indeed on the same machine?
If not why not? And, can we change makepkg so that it can?

I believe it is, but it is a lot more difficult.  On your i686 host system, you would need an x86_64 kernel (and toolchain?).  I have never actually tried....

I assume that you have installed new RAM in your MBP.
It would be helpful if you indicated the EXACT model/year MBP that you have.
What the the RAM specifications that you are trying to install?

Look in your Applications folder.  If your system behaved as expected, you should have an iMovie 9.0 folder in your Applications folder.  Apple moved the old version there as even they suspected the new versions was a train wreck.

  • I could not install the upgrade for iTunes and Error message said "can't start because MSVCR80.dll is missing" Reinstallling has not helped. Is it Apple's fault?

I could not install the upgrade for iTunes and Error Message said " Can't start because MSVCR80.dll is missing". Reinstalling has NOT helped. . Is the fault with the Apple iTunes upgrade?

Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (later)
Remove all of these items in the following order:
    iTunes
    Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall move on to the next item)
    Bonjour
    Apple Application Support
Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.
The uninstall and reinstall process will preserve your iTunes library and settings, but ideally you would back up the library and your other important personal documents and data on a regular basis. See this user tip for a suggested technique.

installing microsoft office for mac and getting prompt for installer password.  i have put in apple id password and admin password and not working, i have also reset my admin password 3 times and it is still not working? how do i get past this?

You don't use your Apple ID or its password to install anything on your Mac. You use the admin account's name and password.
Use the name and password you last entered when resetting them. The "name" you use is not the short name of the admin account folder.
For example. If you create an admin account of John Smith, the short name given to that account's folder will be johnsmith. So when an app requests an admin name and password to install something, the admin name you enter is John Smith, not johnsmith.

  • Enable Bootcamp to install from usb for OSX 10.9**WORKS**

So basically, I have trying to install windows on my mbp using a usb drive. However bootcamp wont allow me to do so since I have a optical drive on the laptop. I have been searching for a long time and eventually came across this solution and I would like to share this so u guys dont have to google all over the place again .
The solutions given before by changing info.plist is correct except that now Bootcamp crashes everytime you change it in OSX 10.9.
    Full solution:
    1. Add your Boot Rom Version(from system info) under DARequiredROMVersions.
    2. Add Model Identifier(from system info) under PreUSBBootSupportedModels
    3. Delete "Pre" from "PreUSBBootSupportedModels", so you have "USBBootSupportedModels"
The first 3 steps are same as before and if its not clear you can easily google solutions with screenshots.
The next step is only for OSX 10.9, as it employs some kind of code signature to prevent you from changing info.plist and cause bootcamp to crash.
    4. Open your terminal, use the following command
    sudo codesign -fs - /Applications/Utilities/Boot\ Camp\ Assistant.app
Sudo means using administrator privilege and u need to enter your mac password. And the command resigns the bootcamp application so that it runs with the new info.plist file and not crash.
    5. Continue on with your installation....
    Cheers.
P.S. back up info.plist before u change anything.

do you have multiple partitions on your USB stick? And what partition table does it use?
I have two windows installers. One is on a 4GB single partition fat32 formatted stick, and one is on a 5GB partitions of a 500GB USB HDD. On the USB HDD I have windows as second partition. First is OSX installer. I noticed that I can boot in BIOS mode with the 4GB USB stick, but not with the 500GB USB HDD.
So try a windows formatted USB stick with a single partition. See if that works.
Be carefull with google.. In the last few days I have been researching some bootcamp related things and there is waaaay more wrong information of people that tell others what they 'heard' than that there is right information of those who know how stuff works.
I am of the 2nd category btw. I only tell you what I know for sure. If an '06 macbook with ODD can boot of of USB into BIOS mode, then so should you.
Edit: The reason the Windows EFI installers says it found an MBR partition only is because by default the disk is in GPT mode with a 'protected' mbr so that non-gpt aware programs wont look and scream "free space! ".
In order for Bootcamp to install in legacy BIOS mode it converts this 'protective' MBR into a "hybrid" MBR. If you download the open source app "Gdisk", install it, and type "sudo gdisk /dev/disk0" in terminal you will see there is either a protective or hybrid MBR on the disk.
Formatting a disk to fat32 with any OSX tool (BC Utility or disk utility) will convert the protective MBR to Hybrid MBR.
Gdisk allows you to reset this to a protective MBR as described here: http://superuser.com/questions/508026/windows-detects-gpt-disk-as-mbr-in-efi-boo t
Hybrid MBR: Full Bootcamp compatibility. OSX knows whats up and decides everything. Windows installs in legacy BIOS mode on an MBR type disk.
Protective MBR: Bootcamp utility and OSX are not used since they would convert the disk to a hybrid MBR. This mode is compatible with booting in EFI mode. EFI compatible Windows versions (7 partially, 8 completely) will live alongside OS X, for the most without problems. And will install on a GPT type disk.
Hope to have helped you with this. Took me three full days of non-stop reading to figure this out.

Edit 2: Make damned sure you have a backup of your system. Messing around with partition types and tables shouldnt hurt when you know what you're doing. But since I know this for three days, and you apparently havent found this yet, I think it's safe to say both of us aren't yet 100% sure of what we're doing .

  • Arch i686 and x86_64

    Hi!
I've noticed that there is a x86_64 project for arch at www.arch64.org
Why is that project separated from the normal i686?
The ftp hierarchy supports multiple architecture types:
    ftp://ftp.archlinux.org/0.8/os/i686
There could be a i586 and a x86_64 as well. I think it has been introduced for that reason a couple of years ago, so why not use it.
Selection of architecture could be at /etc/rc.conf or /etc/pacman.conf
I know that i586 and x86_64 aren't as stable as i686 is. But I think theses projects could get more testers, because it's easier to install them, find packages, more mirrors are available and so on.
    Regards,
    Moritz
PS: I hope this discussion didn't happen before and I did not found it, but maybe this is the time to discuss it again! :-)

Talk to syamajala or c14n. They can be found in IRC. c14n is busy as hell, but he maintains the system, syamajala is the guy that basically started and heads the project. If you can boot the sucker using directions from the wiki, you'll then be able to build and compile packages in much the same way as i686 users.

  • I have installed an UPGRADE for LR5 and by mistake downloaded an upgrade thinking it was an UPDATE

Can I simply reinstall my discs? Should I de-install the download? Will I lose data i.e. photographs which I was working on while the new upgrade was installing?

Thank you Jeff. I am using an iMac with the new Mavericks software.  I first installed an upgrade for LR5 from discs which I purchased some weeks ago and seemed to be using the installation to work on my photographs. Then a screen appeared talking about an upgrade  which seemed to be an update to the discs already installed for LR5 so I downloaded it while continuing to work on photos. There were no instructions to close application. When I did close the application at the end of my work session and then tried to reopen Lightroom it is asking for a serial number. When I put in the serial number I have on the discs it says can't use that because it's already being used.  So my question is can I deinstall this latest download and either recover the earlier version or reinstall the discs?  I would like to use the latest catalogue so that I have my latest work that I've done on my photos.
Apologies if this seems confusing - I am confused as to what has happened and would appreciate help. Thanks in advance.
