Install stuffs from source

I try to install mplayer from source, after it done i hit mplayer, command not found. After that i try to install tmsnc and its the same, command not found. I tried bsdsfv too, and there was an error:
make: /usr/bin/install: Command not found
make: *** [install] Error 127
I install these progs from source always, and it was succes always.

1.
[~] > pacman -Qo /bin/install
/bin/install is owned by coreutils 6.7-1
2.
Why the hell would you want to install mplayer from source? Arch often if not always has the newest stable (sometimes even unstable ) stuff in sensible yet reasonable tuned packages. It eludes me why you would want to compile mplayer yourself. If you need to, at least use ABS.
Other than that I must ask the same question iBertus already asked: are you even running Arch? Perhaps Gentoo is more to your liking.

I went back to the shop and got the CD changed, but it didn't help.
Also please tell me how can I use Navigation on N95. Do I have to buy the liscence from nokia or there is some other way.

  • Installing Software from Source

This question might sound a little bit retarded, but I'm just starting out, so I'd appreciate a little bit of help. I'm trying to install software from source, but it does not seem to work. Or at least, not for lynx, so I'm wondering if pacman is the only way of installing software on Arch (which I pretty much doubt).
I've downloaded lynx, unarchived it, went into its directory, and typed ./configure, followed by make and make check. Everything seemed OK, as I have even got the "Welcome to Lynx!" message. So I went on and typed sudo make install, and no errors occurred. But when I tried launching it with lynx, it said the command is not found. What am I doing wrong?
Also, one more thing: when I loose the prompt, how do I get it back? I mean, like this (http://bit.ly/4tkurS)
    Thanks in advance!

This isn't really arch specific. Installing from source without using the package system is a bad idea(tm) on (almost) any distro. Only the method used to create a package differs.
Edit: not that you "learn GNU/Linux" by compiling anyway. The best way to learn GNU/Linux is just to use it, and to read. There are several good books on the kernel, init systems, userland basics and so on.

  • [RESOLVED] Wireless_tools - Unable to install it from source

    Hello everybody,
I just moved from ubuntu to archlinux few days ago.
So I did use the net install from isolinux because the core install was dropping me to the grub menu.
So I configured the network during the install process with dhcpcd and iwconfig wlan0 essid xxx key xxx and it did work like a charm. I noticed something btw, my desktop (where I am performing the install) haven't got the access to internet till I reboot it and put my laptop offline (to help me with archlinux wiki while installing). Weird. Like if the laptop was getting the address in place of the desktop.. .
The install completed perfectly and I rebooted.
    Here are the troubles...
I started my fresh install and tried to install couple of things but I was offline. I thought I got to do the same: precising to the system my essid and the corresponding key with iwconfig.
    Iwconfig: command not found.
Ok, why is that I dunno but I downloaded the wireless_tools.29 on my laptop, put it on my WD Passport USB HDD, mount it in Arch, was able to copy the directory and unpack it in my root directory. Then I run a make && make install, everything seemed ok. I still hadn't found iwconfig at this point so I followed up the instructions here: http://julp.developpez.com/linux/wg511T/
    Still doesn't work.
I tried to pacman -U but it said the package is corrupted, I downloaded it again but same error...
So if someone would just give me the instructions to perform the install from those sources or from the tar.gz file properly, I'll appreciate it.
    Thank you,
    David
PS: I have searched the whole forum but didn't find an explanation with the source file, maybe I am wrong to go that way...

    ftp://ftp.archlinux.org/core/os/i686/wi … pkg.tar.gz
Why not try downloading the above- just run a pacman -U (it's 32 bit, for the record).

  • File problems installing FLAC from source

Long after executing $sudo make install, I got an error. I Googled the error (make[2]: * No rule to make target `../../src/libOggFLAC/libOggFLAC.la', needed by `test_seeking'. Stop.) and then did a find (searching the entire drive as root) and it seems that the file in the aforementioned path (libOggFLAC.la) is actually not anywhere on my computer. There are many files in the directory it should be in, but not that specific one.
Any clues? I downloaded the package with Fink, which has only ever been reliable. Weird.
Oh, and, yes: I did run ./configure, too

amicrawler - i am now on Tiger and have gcc 4.0 installed and selected.
I'll give that a shot, thanks.

  • Is installing from AUR similar to install from source?

I wonder if installing applications from AUR is similar to installing from source? Recently I have a problem where Eclipse SWT embeded browser is broken and 1 solution is installing firefox from source. So I wonder if installing from AUR is similar as installing from source?
StackOverflow question about broken SWT Browser

You may also be interested in ABS.  ABS is the official build system for Arch.  Things supported by Developers go into Core and Extra, things supported by trusted users go into community.  To get the packages for the extra (which is where firefox lives), install and run (as root) abs.  Then the build stuff for firefox will live at /var/abs/extra/firefox
    ewaller@odin:/var/abs/extra/firefox 1021 %ls
    firefox.desktop firefox.install firefox-install-dir.patch libvpx.patch mozconfig PKGBUILD vendor.js
Looking at the PKGBUILD, that package does compile from source.  Copy the directory to a user directory, enter that directory, and you can build your own copy with makepkg.  You can then install the package with pacman -U
If you need to change something, change the files in your local copy.
This is not that tough, but it is most definitively not a project for a beginner.  The documentation you need is out there, you will need to do your research.

  • [Solved] Apps compiled from source never work and a security question

    Gentlemen,
I'm a Linux noob but in spite of that I managed to install Archlinux thanks to a fine How To Wiki.
    1. I have a question regarding compiling from source in Arch - does it differ from other linuxdistros?
With other distros I normally install in /usr/local and that has worked flawless.
Take Pacman for instance: although I can see there is this Opera app available in the repo (via arch's home page -> search package), the 'pacman -S opera' tells me the app doesn't exist.
I've tried to download and install it from source following Opera's own 'how to' but the app fails to start, after a successful installation.
Same goes with other apps such as f-prot antivirus.
Did I miss something important here?
    2. I installed Arch over FTP. How safe is it, considering I'm not behind a router and the iptables/firestarter was only installed after xfce4 was installed. What about open ports and such? I know there aren't many services enabled/listening but I noticed couple of daemons such as portmap being active during the installation process.
    Thanks

a pkgbuild is pretty simple once you get used to it,
you may be put off by packaging standards, you can ignore them, they are only for people intending to share
with other via the AUR for example.
you can copy one of the existign ones, either the prototypes or jsut anyone from the aur,
then change stuff you fidn necessary, like pkgname, pkgver, etc.
and add the same build commands you'd use otherwise to the build()
and usualy for a make install, just add DESTDIR=$startdir/pkg etc.,... just practice you'll get the hang of it very quickly
Hi Kumico, thanks for the tip.
Or I could try using Arch's default paths as long as the applications don't mind. But it's nice to have an alternative solution should any trouble arise.
Regarding pkgbuild, I'll probably start to use it when I feel more comfy with the Arch environment itself.
Using the terminal to perform...well, just about everything, rather than having a nice gui isn't actually bad, but there sure is a transition for a newbie to adapt to.

  • About building Apache and PHP from source

    Hello,
I figured my question should be posted here, if it should be done somewhere else, I apologize.
I'm in the process of exploring solaris 9 (I have RH5 - 9, FC1-3 and FreeBSD 4.7> experience). I was wondering which tools I need to build stuff from source, like Apache and PHP. I am aware of www.sunfreeware.com, which helped me out with mc and other useful stuff.
The problem I see is that when I install packages from sunfreeware.com, I must rely on the package maintainer to release a new package for newer Apache/PHP versions (with bug/security fixes in it). I plan to run a public webserver on this config, so I figured it'd be best to build what I need from the source so I can update it anytime I like.
    What I installed from sunfreeware.com:
    autconf
    automake
    gcc
    make
    bison
    expect
    mc
    libiconv
    ncurses
    flex
What else do I need to successfully build software from the source?
Are there any people running a public web/dns/mailserver on Solaris (whatever the version)?
If someone could answer to those questions, I'd be most grateful.
    Bas

Have you installed the companion CD? All you need is there.
    Have you tried to compile?
If so, what errors do you get?

  • Compiling Apache 2.2 and php 5.2 from source on Arch

    Hi there
Wanting to compile Apache 2 with PHP 5 on my Arch server. I figure this must be frequently done by people out there wanting more control over how their servers are setup, and was wondering if anyone had some good documentation for this? If none exists I'm keen to work on putting it up on the Arch Wiki.
I've compiled apache httpd-2.2.16 from source already, and have it running nicely.
    Apache compile options were:
    ./configure --prefix=/usr/local/apache \
    --enable-rewrite --enable-ssl --enable-so \
    --enable-mime-magic --enable-suexec \
    --enable-static-rotatelogs \
    --disable-imap --disable-userdir --enable-cgi \
    --disable-dav \
    --disable-proxy-connect --disable-proxy-ftp --disable-proxy-http --disable-proxy \
    --disable-authnz-ldap

  • Building ArchLinux from Source

Hello I am new to Archlinux.
I come here from a long way through Ubuntu, Debian over Gentoo and finally Linux from Scratch. However none provided me the boot times I wished, so I came to Arch. I don't know wether the question was discussed, at least I could not find it:
How can I install ArchLinux from Source? I want to benefit from "-O2 -march=native" (or -O3? What is more appropiate for Intel Atom N450, 1GB RAM?). I only find documentation for using the binaries provided.

The beautiful aspect of Arch, to me, is that you can install all of your desired apps from binaries in a very short time and later compile them (or some of them) from source code to optimize performance. I run ArchLinux on a couple of systems with Atom 230 and 330 processors (each with maxed out memory, 3.2GB).  I've noticed a nice improvement in responsiveness as I've moved step-by-step from a system composed entirely of pre-compiled binaries from the repositories to a system composed mostly of the same packages compiled locally with my own CFLAGS ("-march=atom -O2 -msse3 -mfpmath=sse").  I think that installing from source is a reasonable thing to do and is very easy with Arch:
    pbget <package> && cd <package>/ && makepkg --install --noconfirm --log  [-s]
You can prepare for your daily or weekly upgrade with
pbget --abs --upgradable && pbget --aur-only --upgradable
To get a kernel compiled for the atom cpu just use pbget to get the kernel26 package (or pbget --aur-only kernel26-ck to get the ck-patched kernel), edit the PKGBUILD to enable menuconfig (I use "make gconfig"), run makepkg and enable the atom cpu option in the menus.
Arch doesn't have USE flags (and I'm glad of that) but the equivalent is to edit the PKGBUILD.  You may have to delve into the source code before changing ./configure options:  makepkg --nobuild && <check the configure options> && vim PKGBUILD && makepkg --install
In general the Arch devs have done well in choosing the right configuration. I'm happy to stick with almost all of their decisions and burn myself once in while when I try to do otherwise

    Hi,
have you installed the prebuild binaries for libjpeg, and libpng? They are universal binaries.
Otherwise you can copy/paste the gcc line, and get rid of the ppc part. Then run setup.py again, and it should continue on.
(otherwise get a python from python.org and use the binaries... they work fine on leopard)
    cheers,

    Hi,
Can any one help me on the below issue ?
while executing automated test case in test center it is showing as test case is in progress, then i navigated to virtual machine (where the test agent is online), there Internet
explore has opened automatically and my test case execution started, but with in a seconds IE has closed . However, in test center, test case status is showing as in
progress, after  2 or 3 min  some of  test cases getting passed and some are failed.
Here my question is in lab center-->virtual machine, IE has opened automatically and navigated the 2 or 3  links and with in seconds IE has getting closed. Why IE is getting closed without completing execution?

Music is not included in the backup (and nor are films or tv shows), only the contents of third-party apps are included. Did you not do File > Transfer Purchases when connected to your computer's iTunes to copy your iTunes purchases over, and/or have you not got a backup copy of your music somewhere e.g. on an external drive ?

  • [SOLVED} How to install from source

    Hi,
I'm trying to install Wittfella's qtfm from source and I have no idea how to do it. Previously I've used ./configure and make install.
What is the install process for Arch?

    This http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/AUR_Helpers
If you look into PKGBUILDs you see the good old './configure && make install' but by using pacman you don't have to worry about dependencies and if you remove the installed app, it gets removed all the way, no garbage left behind.

  • Man Pages when installing from source

    Hello,
Whenever I can, I prefer to install applications by source following the steps:
    1. sudo ./configures --prefix=/usr/local/app-name
    2. sudo make
    3. sudo make install
Everything runs fine (the only difference is the prefix parameter), but the applications is not automatically added to the PATH.
If the app should be available to all users I create a symbolic link in /usr/bin pointing to /usr/local/app-name/bin. If it is just for a single user, I added the location to .bash_profile file of the user.
Now I noticed that the man page of the app-name is unavailable, because the man page file is installed in /usr/local/app-name/share/man, in a location different from the rest.
Can someone help me to fix the linkage of the man pages? Where does the man command reads from by default?
Note: I prefer to install with --prefix to /usr/local/app-name because it's easier to remove the entire application when I don't need it.
    Thank you.

Yeah... it worked like a charm!
    Thank you Zerwas.
I marked as Solved but what if we want the man page to be available to all users without the need to edit .bash_profile? Can we create a symbolic link somewhere? (like I do with the /usr/bin) Certainly there's a default folder for man pages.
    Thanks again.
