Installaling Swing Application

Dear friends,,,,
I have a huge Swing application which runs using JSW and Firebird database.
I Need to, somehow, create an installation program (in a CD) to set it working in clients machine.
The tasks of this program would be:
- to install the Firebird database
- do create some directories and copy some files (3 files)
- to access an web link to start the system using JSW
Would anybody have any idea how (and with what) I could do that?
PS.
All my clients machines are Windows
Appreciate any help
Thanks

  • Install swing application on server/desktop with database

    Hi,
I developped a swing application which I need to install soon. It's the first time I install an application on my own, so any help would be welcome.
I use maven for build, hibernate for the database access.
Is there anything I need to take into consideration about the following things (are there good sites for reference?):
    - the build process
    - I use an external database (mysql), the configuration files are part of the program (they are not put somewhere external) --> any advice on good practices?
    - if the database is put on a server, as well as the jar file of the program, will there be any problem when trying to open the program from another computer, having access to the server?
    - if the database is put on a server, and the jar file of the program on a computer having access to the server (for the database), beside the normal hibernate configuration for the database (ip adres, port, ...), are there important things that might cause problems for the communication between the program and the database?
    thanks for any advice

There are always problems when trying to communicate between two machines. Have you set up your MySQL server so that your database accepts connections from all other machines, for example? Or does it just accept connections from "localhost" because that's where you were testing?

The names of some of those things are "firewall" and "router".

  • Opening a PDF file from a swing application in MAC

    HI everyone,
Actually I am developing a swing application which should be executable in both windows and Mac (even other) platformes. In my panel I have an icon which leads to a pdf file. I saw in the following thread:
    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?forumID=17&threadID=617767
    that we can use
Runtime.getRuntime().exec("rundll32 url.dll,FileProtocolHandler " + file);to open what ever file in windows. I want to know what should I do if this application is running on Mac or Linux! I have never worked with these OS so I do not have any idea how to resolve the problem.
Can anyone help me with this matter?? That would be really nice of you to reply :)
Thanx and have a great day.

Thank you for replaying so soon..
Well you are right by using a widget and etc.. but the problem is that I have been told that this application should open a PDF file that has bookmarks to each chapter of the text and one can make a search on this text by using pdf search.. So I do not have any other choice than opening a pdf :D and my time is unfortunately limit.
For solving the problem that the user may not have PDF reader.. well I have been told that user should install the pdf reader, so in my application package I am putting the installation file of PDF.
But going back to my problem.. I guess is someway I have to get the OS type of the user and I have to do a SWITCH or something on the OS type and then change the content of the Runtime.exec(). But the question is how can I get the OS type and what should I change in Runtime.exec().
So now any idea? any solution??

  • Unicode characters with accents won't display in Java Swing applications

I'm using FreeMind (a Java Swing application) and I need to enter classical Greek characters with accent marks. When I type an accented Greek character, FreeMind displays the unaccented character. However, I can type the accented character in MS Word, then copy and paste into FreeMind, the accented character appears.
One of the FreeMind developers indicated this was a Java Swing issue, not FreeMind, and suggested I test with another Swing application. So, I installed jEdit and got exactly the same results. I can paste an accented character into jEdit, but I cannot type it in directly.
I'm using Windows Vista with Java 6 Update 22 (build 1.6.0_22-b04). I also tested on a XP Pro box with Java 1.6.0_18-b07 and got the same result.
One other note: A couple days ago, I was able to type accented Greek characters into FreeMind. But it only worked for a couple days and then the behavior reverted to unaccented characters. It is possible, but I don't recall specifically, that I updated Java during the time and that may indicate a bug in one version of Java but not another.
Any assistance or guidance would be greatly appreciated!
    Darin

    Walter,
The link you provided does not appear to describe the Greek Polytonic keyboard. (The page also describes using the "Option" key as the dead key. There is no "Option" key on my keyboard. I'm using a Sony VGN-NS140E purchased in Chicago, i.e. standard physical US keyboard.)
Please see http://darindavis.net/languages/keyboard_Greek.pdf for a detailed description of how to use the Greek (Polytonic) keyboard in Windows to produce a complete set of accented classical Greek characters. This method works in MS Word and Notepad. I enabled the Greek (Polytonic) keyboard with:
Windows (Vista) Start > Control Panel > Regional and Language Options > Change Keyboards > General > Add > Greek (Greece) > Greek Polytonic
A test that will demonstrate whether you can replicate the error is to do the following in both MS Word (or Notepad) and jEdit (or FreeMind):
    1. Enable the Greek Polytonic keyboard
    2. Type "\" then "e" which should produce an epsilon with smooth breathing and grave accent (ἒ)
When I do this in MS Word or Notepad, I see the epsilon with smooth breathing and grave accent. When I do this in jEdit and FreeMind, I only see an epsilon.
I recorded a screencast to illustrate the problem: http://www.screencast.com/t/TRKkKQrCgbN
Actually, this problem is transient. Sometimes FreeMind or jEdit will display accented characters, other times it won't. Ironically, the first time I recorded the above referenced screencast, a few characters in jEdit did appear with accents. A couple minutes later, I re-recorded the screencast and as you can see jEdit did not display the accents. Between the two recordings I literally did nothing other than stop the Jing recording and start a new one. There is another variable at play here and I can't determine what it is. The most likely source seems to be Java since MS Word and Notepad consistently display accent characters.
    Thanks,
    Darin

    Exception in thread "AWT-EventQueue-0" java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: sun.font.FileFontStrike.createScalerContext(J[DZIIZFF)J
UnsatisfiedLinkError indicates that the JVM cannot find a native method's definition. Generally this means that the shared object file (.so on unices, .dll on Windows) cannot be found by the JVM.
Since the missing method is visibly Sun's code, presumably a built-in JRE method, that probably means your JRE/JDK install has been corrupted (corroborated by a quick Google search on the obvious keywords).
Try reinstalling the JRE or JDK.
Secondary, it is not possible to launch the Java-Applet in Control Panel of Windows. It happans nothing. I don't understand this sentence. What are you doing exactly, and how is that related to the first question?
    Much luck,

  • Deploy Swing application in sun studio

I use Sun studio to write a swing application. How I can use this app in other computer(may be not install JDK or JRE)

Your question doesn't have to do with SunONE Studio ...
First off, of course the other computer needs to have at the very least a JRE installed. So if you assume they don't have a JRE, you need to arrange to deliver a JRE to them or include it with your installation procedure / tool.
Think about the contents of a Swing/java app - it's a .jar file plus other resources (that can be bundled in the .jar file). It helps to have a launching script or .exe depending on the platform, but that's not absolutely necessary as on many platforms simply double clicking the .jar file will launch the app (assuming a JRE is properly installed).
So deploying the application is just a matter of copying the .jar file to the system. But might involve the use of an "installer" depending on the needs of your customers.
Another route that's unique to Java is Java Web Start - in this case you write a JNLP file (it's in XML format), put it out on a web server, and send the link around. The browser will help you to launch the application. The customer still needs to get a JRE installed, and once they do the JWS pieces are available. JWS will handle the installation of the actual application, plus if you need to update the app JWS will see the updates and copy new .jar files or whatnot to their system.

  • Launching Adobe Viewer from a Swing application

How do I launch Adobe Viewer (or Reader) from my Swing application. I have a help menu item that needs to open the viewer with the PDF help manual. Since the application is cross-platform, do I need different versions of Adobe with my install package? Thanks for any help.

Thanks. I tried the adobe bean and it seems to work fine until I select the "Print" icon. It crashes the Viewer and my application as well. I get the following:

can any body give me approach or some coding tips.

Your problem is where did the user install PowerPoint, right?
Here is some code that figures out where the user installed explorer. You can use similar code to find PowerPoint.
The you can build a temporary batch file with its path, like I showed you before, and run it (the batch file should get deleted automatically later.):

  • Downloading and installing Swing 1.1 or 1.2

We have a RS6000 box w/AIX 5.1. We just upgraded to Java 1.3.1, but Swing must not be part of the default install. I need to download and install Swing 1.1, or 1.2 because we have an application that requires it. Can someone tell me where to download Swing and where I can find some Swing install instructions for AIX 5.1? thanks for any help
    Paul

Java 1.2 and higher all have Swing, as far as I know. Although, with AIX, who knows. You'd have to go to IBM's AIX site and find out, most likely.

  • How to give Common Background color for all JPanels in My Swing application

    Hi All,
I am developing a swing application using The Swing Application Framework(SAF)(JSR 296). I this application i have multiple JPanel's embedded in a JTabbedPane. In this way i have three JTabbedPane embedded in a JFrame.
Now is there any way to set a common background color for the all the JPanel's available in the application??
I have tried using UIManager.put("Panel.background",new Color.PINK);. But it did not work.
Also let me know if SAF has some inbuilt method or way to do this.
    Your inputs are valuable.
    Thanks in Advance,
    Nishanth.C

It is not the fault of NetBeans' GUI builder, JPanels are opaque by default, I mean whether you use Netbeans or not.Thank you!
I stand corrected (which is short for +"I jumped red-eyed on my feet and rushed to create an SSCCE to demonstrate that JPanels are... mmm... oh well, they are opaque by default... ;-[]"+)
NetBeans's definitely innocent then, and indeed using it would be an advantage (ctrl-click all JPanels in a form and edit the common opaque property to false) over manually coding
To handle this it would be better idea to make a subclass of JPanel and override isOpaque() to return false. Then use this 'Trasparent Panel' for all the panels where ever transparency is required.I beg to differ. From a design standpoint, I'd find it terrible (in the pejorative sense of the word) to design a subclass to inconsistently override a getter whereas the standard API already exposes the property (both get and set) for what it's meant: specify whether the panel is opaque.
Leveraging this subclass would mean changing all lines where a would-be-transparent JPanel is currently instantiated, and instantiate the subclass instead.
If you're editing all such lines anyway, you might as well change the explicit new JPanel() for a call to a factory method createTransparentJPanel(); this latter could, at the programmer's discretion, implement transparency whichever way makes the programmer's life easier (subclass if he pleases, although that makes me shudder, or simply call thePanel.setOpaque(false) before returning the panel). That way the "transparency" code is centralized in a single easy to maintain location.
I had to read the code for that latter's UI classes to find out the keys to use (+Panel.background+, Label.foreground, etc.), as I happened to not find this info in an authoritative document - I see that you seem to know thoses keys, may I ask you where you got them from?
One of best utilities I got from this forum, written by camickr makes getting these keys and their values very easy. You can get it from his blog [(->link)|http://tips4java.wordpress.com/2008/10/09/uimanager-defaults/]
Definitely. I bit a pair of knucles off when discovered it monthes after cumbersomely traversing the BasicL&F code...
Still, it is a matter-of-fact approach (and this time I don't mean that to sound pejorative), that works if you can test the result for a given JDK version and L&F, but doesn't guarantee that these keys are there to stand - an observation, but not a specification.
Thanks TBM for highlighting this blog entry, that's the best keys list device I have found so far, but the questions still holds as to what specifies the keys.

I am replicating some of the sample report of SQL Servers in BusinessObjects XI R3.1.
One of the SQL Sever's report is of product catalogue type that gives complete information like name, category, description along with the products image etc... for each of the products.
I am trying to replicate the above said SQL Server report in Business objects XI R3.1. I am facing problem in bringing the image in to my BO report. The image resides in a table and its datatype is of varbinary(max). I don't know the exact matching while creating an object in the uiverse designer.

  • How to install Adobe Application Manager?

How to install Adobe Application Manager? I downloaded it, but can't install.
Just purchased the CC for photographers.  Have been using Photoshop since version 3.
I have been studying your support docs for several days and have no business messing around with something called, .gz files and installation logs. Totally unsuccessful "Updating" my CS6 or CS6 bridge or Extension Manager or the Adobe Support Advisor by the CC Desktop.
Have no Photoshop CS6 because I followed your CC support instructions.
Uninstalled my CS6 today so I can finish a job tomorrow.  Bad decision on my part because I can't reinstall it and am unable to correct
    this problem.
I was able to use CC to update LR, but am absolutely too afraid to touch it now.
I have been waiting inline for Chat also, but the numbers ahead of me are going up.
If someone in this Community forum can help me, it would be fabulous.
    Thanks very much.

    Uninstalled Creative Cloud.
Downloaded it again - 4th time.
Deleted a AAMDetect file from the Library/Internet Plug-ins
Downloaded and installed Adobe App Manager and an icon for it is on my Desktop
    Installed Creative Cloud.
    OK.
Now how do get my Photoshop CS6 back before I download Photoshop CC?
CS6 is not listed in the available Apps in the CC Desktop.
Support wait time right now is 2 hours by phone.
After sitting on Chat yesterday only to see the people "waiting ahead of me" go from 17 to 18, I gave up.
    Please advise.
    Thanks again.
