Installation on a CPU without PAE

Hi, is it possible to install ArchLinux on a system with a non-PAE cpu? (intel centrino dothan)

My hardware is an ancient Dell Latitude D800 which is running Linux Mint 11 with no pae kernel. I cannot upgrade because a pae kernel is required and it can't be run on it.

  • Thread yields cpu WITHOUT forcing process to lose cpu

I would like to know how a thread should yield the CPU without forcing its process to lose the CPU. The candidates are thr_yield, sched_yield and yield.
"The yield() function causes the current lightweight process to yield its execution in favor of another lightweight process with the same or greater priority." This looks promising if the LWP is bound to the thread in question, but I still don't know what would happen if the thread has process contention scope.
"The sched_yield() function forces the running thread to relinquish the processor until the process again becomes the head of its process list. It takes no arguments." Yuck! Does this mean that the process is booted by the operation? I would have preferred it if no mention of process had been made."
"The thr_yield() function causes the current thread to yield its execution in favor of another thread with the same or greater priority." Perhaps the best candidate. This does, of course, push us in a direction away from portability unlike sched_yield.
I was just wondering if anyone knew the answer to this question. Thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to reply.

    Hi,
without AWR/ASH your options for retrospective troubleshooting are very limited. You can use statspack -- but unlike AWR, it requires the DBA to either launch it manually, or manually schedule a database job for this purpose.
V$ views won't help you because they either represent statistics accumulated since the last instance startup, or the current state of the database (like V$SQL which externalizes the current contents of the library cache -- so if a cursor is aged out, you won't find it there). What you need is differential stats -- i.e. differences between snapshot (e.g. before and after a problem), there are no default mechanisms in the database for that (other than AWR or analogs).
    You query is meaningless because:
    - cursors may have been aged out
    - cursors may have later last_load_time (because after being executed in the specified interval, they may have been active at a later time)
    - even if you managed to get an accurate number of cursors accessed during a certain interval, what would you do with it?
Pretty much your only option is to do log mining, if you have archived logs for the period of interest. It's time consuming, but it will give you the entire history of all SQL run, if you really need it.
    Best regards,
    Nikolay

  • 3rd node is taking 15% of CPU without any load and connection on the server

    Hi,
I am struggling to resolve the 3rd node is taking 15% of CPU without any load and connection on the server. but not find clues for this. Please give me some inputs.
    The issue is:
We have 8 databases on our 3node RAC (11.2.0.1). One of the performance team guy reported that 3rd node is taking 15%cpu utilization when there is no load and connection to the database and at that time the other 2 node are taking only 1%cpu. even i have checked it by using top command and it is almost given same results.
To come out of this issue, i have two solution in my mind, but i am not sure whether this approach is good or bad. the plans are
(1). shutdown the databases and check the cpu usage. --to findout is there any thing wrong with Kernel parameters or at system level.
(2). Shutdown the databases and CRS on the 3rd node and reboot the server.
If above process is correct then i need to take permission from my manager.
I am total stuck, what i need to do. Is there any other approach to resolve this issue. Please help me, this is very critical issue for me.
Also i have checked from GV$SESSION for the active session, but i didn't find any connection apart from oracle processes.
    Thanks in advance.

Thank you Guzma for your suggestion,
When i checked the gv$session for the active sessions from only 2databases, Do i need to check in all the databases and make sure there are no active session and try for the 1st solution.
-more over i have observed that one of the oracle process is taking 99% of the 15%cpu when i checked from top command. i have tried to find out the what the session is from below, but it given no results from the 2of the DB's.

  • Strange installer process takes CPU away

I once tried to download paint onto my Mac computer and then that is when things started getting slow, like I think it became kind of laggy, I ended up going to the task monitor thing and saw that there was a process called installer which was taking up a lot to CPU, I ended it but I decided to test around and hope that I fixed the problem, but I found out that every time I moved something random and useless from downloads into the trash, the process comes back, I didnt really move stuff from the downloads stack thingy until now, but I might of done it once or twice before without any problem, also I think it once started without me even moving anything from downloads to the trash, this is weird, how to I make that stop???
I'm not sure if I explained that right

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) on the advice of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    PATH=/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin; clear; Fb='%s\n\t(%s)\n'; Fm='\n%s\n\n%s\n'; Fr='\nRAM details\n%s\n'; Fs='\n%s: %s\n'; Fu='user %s%%, system %s%%'; AC="com.autodesk.AutoCAD com.evenflow.dropbox com.google.GoogleDrive"; H='^[[:space:]]*((127\.0\.0\.1|::1|fe80::1%lo0)[[:space:]]+local|(255\.){3}255[[:space:]]*broadcast)host[[:space:]]*$'; NS=networksetup; PB="/usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c Print"; A () { ((a==0)); }; BI () { $PB\ :CFBundleIdentifier "$1"; }; LC () { $2 launchctl list | awk 'NR>1 && !/0x|\.[0-9]+$|com\.apple\.(AirPortBaseStationAgent|launchctl\.(Aqua|Background|System))$/{print $3}' | grep -Fv "$1"; }; M () { find -L "$d" -type f | while read f; do file -b "$f" | egrep -lq XML\|exec && echo $f; done; }; AT () { o=`file -b "$1" | egrep -v '^(A.{16}t$|cann)'`; Ps "${1##*/} format"; }; Pc () { o=`grep -v '^ *#' "$2"`; l=`wc -l <<< "$o"`; ((l>25)) && o=`head -n25 <<< "$o"`$'\n'"and $((l-25)) more line(s)"; Pm "$1"; AT "$1"; }; Pm () { [[ "$o" ]] && o=`sed -E '/^ *$|CSConfigDot/d;s/^ */   /;s/[-0-9A-Fa-f]{22,}/UUID/g;s/(ochat)\.[^.]+(\..+)/\1\2/;/Shared/!s/(\/Users\/)[^/]+/\1-/g' <<< "$o"` && printf "$Fm" "$1" "$o"; }; Pp () { o=`$PB "$2" | awk -F'= ' \/$3'/{print $2}'`; Pm "$1"; }; Ps () { o=`echo $o`; [[ !     Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

  • SAP CE Installation in Distributed Mode without SAPMNT Folder Share

    Hello
We are installing NW CE 7.1 in Production Environment in Distributed Mode - App Server on one host and DB Server on another host.
The App and DB server OS are Windows Server 2008 R2 and DB is Oracle 11g. We have successfully installed SCS on the app server and now installing DB Server Instance on the DB Host. While installing the same, the SAP Installtion asks for path of SAPMNT.
Our Network Team has informed that due to security reasons, in production data center they will not be able to allow sharing of folder from App Server. They have asked us to check if there is any other way of completing our installation without actually creating folder share on App Server.
We would like to know whether the sharing can be taken out of the server component and the same can be enabled on the different machine and this can be given the UNC path for accessing the same.
Kindly confirm if this is possible and supported by SAP. Also let us know if there are some other supported options regarding the same.
    Regards,
    Shubham

    Hi Sunny,
Thanks a lot for your response. So does it mean I can copy the usr/sap folder to the DB Server and give the path from the same DB server to complete the install? Does this path need to be provided in UNC format or can be using local drive path
Also can I do the same for Additional App Server that we can install. Kindly confirm.
    Regards,
    Shubham

  • Can i reset a Server Installation to start over without reinstalling?

Is it possible to delete all the (or some) Prefs of an Server-Installation to start over the Configuration without reinstalling the System? (i have no second computer and an iMac without CD-ROM).

If you're on Mountain Lion, it's pretty easy. Just drag Server.app out of the Applications folder. This will disable all of the server processes. Then you can remove everything in /Library/Server. That will remove all of the saved state, effectively returning you to a clean install of server.

  • Oracle Installer 10.2 crashes without error

Shortly after I press Install after selecting what to install the installer just crashes without an error. I am suing Windows XP.
    Any ideas?
    Ben

I have a Windows2003 server with an Oracle version 10.2.0.2 database installed.
I had the same problem this morning when I tried to run the OUI for the 10.2.0.3 patch installation.
OUI let me select the ORACLE_HOME, then showed what software was about to be installed for the 10.2.0.3 patch. After I clicked the "INSTALL" button, it went to the installation progress screen and immediately hung during the "De-install" phase. After waiting a while with no activity, I canceled out of OUI. I checked the installation log files and found the same "INFO" messages mentioned by orangetwig above except for the final "INFO" message with the OUI-10125 error. I did not get that particular message in my installation log.
There is a report of a bug in MetaLink (Bug 6475819) that looks like a problem similar to this one. It has the same installation log file "INFO" messages, except the "Method 'dispose()' not implemented" error is thrown for the OiifpNodeSelPanel class instead of the OiifpwizIntroPanel class, which is what orangetwig and I are experiencing. Oracle provides no solutions or workarounds.
The funny thing is, I have installed the same 10.2.0.3 patch successfully on fresh Oracle 10.2.0.1 installations with no trouble at all. This morning's failure occurred when trying to apply the 10.2.0.3 patch to a database that has been running for a while and that has had APEX and BIPublisher installed on the same server. But these have nothing to do with the ORACLE_HOME that I was trying to patch, so that shouldn't be a factor, should it?
Also, the server has been routinely receiving automatic Java and Windows OS updates/patches. Could they have broken something needed by OUI?
I'm just making wild guesses, because Oracle hasn't provided any explanations or solutions.
    Any suggestions?

  • Group policy software installs to remote users without VPN

Matt:Funny you should ask this, I justpublished a post in the Active Directory groupon how to extend AD domain services to remote users without the cost and complexity ofa traditional VPN. While DirectAccess provides a viable option, it requires Windows 7 Enterprise clients and there are a lot of moving parts to making it work (see this article).Pertino gives you the functionality and end user transparency of DirectAccess, but it works with any Windows 7 client version as well as Macs and is super simple to deploy and administer. Here's a video that shows you how.If it looks like it might work for you, you can try Pertino free for 30-days by goinghere.

If you were able to configure DirectAccess; your remote users would be connected to the corporate network without a VPN at all times - though I'm thinking this is not applicable to your situation.
But strictly speaking, you cannot use Group Policy Software Installation to manage software on computers that are not connected to the corporate network. 1) They are unable to retrieve the policy, and 2) unable to retrieve the software package.
You would need a 3rd party solution for this.

  • X86 Workgroup Server Installation with 1 CPU

    Hi Folks,
I have couple of newbie questions ..
    a) Can I Install Workgroup Server mode on X86 with 1 CPU ?
    b) I registered with sun to get a 60 day evaluation license. How long does it usually take for getting it?

    Hi,
You should use the OpsMgrDWRead account.

  • Installation on a computer without a C: drive

    Dear reader,
For some reason WinXP decided to call my main drive L: instead of C: during installation. This means I have no C: drive. Now the installation of LabView terminates prematurely with an error message about C: being an illegal drive. How can I install LabView on my machine?

    A possible 'work around':
Search and locate a program SUBST.EXE (You will find more that one instance)
From the search window select the instance in system32
right click and select "Open Containing Folder"
    This should take you in
    \Windows dirctry\system32\subst.exe
Right click on this and 'Send' a shortcut to your desktop.
Close the search etc windows and from your desktop
right click on the newlly created shortacut and
    select properties.
Edit the target line (that should show something similar to this):
    L:\WINNT\system32\subst.exe
    so that it becomes:
    L:\WINNT\system32\subst.exe C: L:\
and save the changes (Apply or OK)
After you run this shortcut you should see an L: and
    a C: drive letters.
    Since after LV insta
ll it will look for C: references,
you can copy (or move) this shotcut into a startup directory:
    L:\Documents and Settings\\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
    or:
    L:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

  • J2EE Processes using 25% CPU load without load

    Hi
We are running a Portal cluster with 2 cluster application nodes with each 2 J2EE server processes and a dispatcher.
We experiences that after some time the J2EE server processes can start using typical 25% CPU without any load on the portal - after some time the load typically increase to approx. 50% CPU (still without user load) and the only "solution" is to restart the processes.
Anyone you have experienced a similar behaviour?
    BR
    Tom

Are you doing load balancing too somewhere?
I though I read somewhere about some replication between nodes that goes on.  If they transfer their information and drop it, that is fine.  But they don't. On the next round they exchange the new info and info from the last time.  It just grows.  Look at you DB server, check to see if one of the DB's grows with the CPU load.
The other thing is logging.  I am a log freak myself but, sometimes I get into trouble by logging too much.  Next time your CPU loads check *.log and temp logs, see if there are any over 10 gig.
Not that I never had one,
    no,
    never.

  • Update UEFI without CPU

    Hi,
I've never owned an MSI motherboard before, so without complete documentation in the FAQ section here or in the manual:
I'm planning to buy an MSI B85I board and want to pair it with an Intel G3240. Given the CPU is a Haswell Refresh, the motherboard requires the latest UEFI update. Can I update the UEFI BIOS without a CPU via M-Flash?
    Thanks in advance.

Quote from: Bernhard on 19-July-14, 14:40:23
Depends where you are buying from? If its a shop, let them do the CPU install and make sure that the latest BIOS is flashed.
The DC refresh CPUs mostly work on the older BIOS versions, at least that has been the experience for the users on this forum. The users then flash the latest BIOS.
See here for a user that tested and actually flashed back to the first BIOS version on that board and DC still worked. https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=181245.0
Thanks. I'll see what the shop can do. It seems the 8-Series motherboards are quickly being made redundant given the difficulty to find a compatible CPU (without BIOS update).

  • Stored CPU consuming in messaging server 7u5

    Hello, All!
I have just installed  the newest version of communication suite(7u4).
I've made test installation on the computer without any users and with empty message store.
However stored process consume 4% CPU usage. In such situation I suppose the product is not yet ready for production use.
I'm waiting for the messaging server patch.
    The answer is:
You want the fix for bug 16311689: reduce CPU usage for stored. The workaround for that bug is: configutil -o local.store.deadlock.checkinterval -v 100.

Were you testing the Messaging Server at the time of the 4% cpu usage?   Were there any store related commands being run, like reconstruct, mboxutil, rehostuser?   Were any users connected and sending messages?
What cpu usage were you expecting to see?
Where there any WARNING or CRITICAL messages in the default or system logs at the time?
What OS is this running on?  What filesystem is in use?  ZFS, UFS, etc.
What are the specs for the system you were testing on?   Disk configuration?  Memory size?
I would expect even an idle Messaging Server to consume some cpu as the store does run automated processes on the database and transaction logs.  How much will depend on load, tuning that's been done, disk performance(average service time is very important for Messaging Server performance).
Please see the following documents for tuning recommendations.
