Thread yields cpu WITHOUT forcing process to lose cpu
I would like to know how a thread should yield the CPU without forcing its process to lose the CPU. The candidates are thr_yield, sched_yield and yield.
"The yield() function causes the current lightweight process to yield its execution in favor of another lightweight process with the same or greater priority." This looks promising if the LWP is bound to the thread in question, but I still don't know what would happen if the thread has process contention scope.
"The sched_yield() function forces the running thread to relinquish the processor until the process again becomes the head of its process list. It takes no arguments." Yuck! Does this mean that the process is booted by the operation? I would have preferred it if no mention of process had been made."
"The thr_yield() function causes the current thread to yield its execution in favor of another thread with the same or greater priority." Perhaps the best candidate. This does, of course, push us in a direction away from portability unlike sched_yield.
I was just wondering if anyone knew the answer to this question. Thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to reply.
Sincerely,
jonnie savell
Hi,
without AWR/ASH your options for retrospective troubleshooting are very limited. You can use statspack -- but unlike AWR, it requires the DBA to either launch it manually, or manually schedule a database job for this purpose.
V$ views won't help you because they either represent statistics accumulated since the last instance startup, or the current state of the database (like V$SQL which externalizes the current contents of the library cache -- so if a cursor is aged out, you won't find it there). What you need is differential stats -- i.e. differences between snapshot (e.g. before and after a problem), there are no default mechanisms in the database for that (other than AWR or analogs).
You query is meaningless because:
- cursors may have been aged out
- cursors may have later last_load_time (because after being executed in the specified interval, they may have been active at a later time)
- even if you managed to get an accurate number of cursors accessed during a certain interval, what would you do with it?
Pretty much your only option is to do log mining, if you have archived logs for the period of interest. It's time consuming, but it will give you the entire history of all SQL run, if you really need it.
Best regards,
Nikolay

J2EE Processes using 25% CPU load without load
Hi
We are running a Portal cluster with 2 cluster application nodes with each 2 J2EE server processes and a dispatcher.
We experiences that after some time the J2EE server processes can start using typical 25% CPU without any load on the portal - after some time the load typically increase to approx. 50% CPU (still without user load) and the only "solution" is to restart the processes.
Anyone you have experienced a similar behaviour?
BR
TomAre you doing load balancing too somewhere?
I though I read somewhere about some replication between nodes that goes on. If they transfer their information and drop it, that is fine. But they don't. On the next round they exchange the new info and info from the last time. It just grows. Look at you DB server, check to see if one of the DB's grows with the CPU load.
The other thing is logging. I am a log freak myself but, sometimes I get into trouble by logging too much. Next time your CPU loads check *.log and temp logs, see if there are any over 10 gig.
Not that I never had one,
no,
never. -
Discoveryd process uses 100% CPU - Safari Can't find the server
Hello
Since upgrading to Yosemite, I lose connection to the internet 2 or 3 times a day. (Outlook goes offline at the same time)
This is with a wired connection. (Wi-Fi is turned off)
Safari gives me the "Safari Can't Find the Server" message.
Restarting the computer solves the issue temporarily.
While I'm unable to connect to the internet, Activity Monitor shows a process named "discoveryd" that uses 100% CPU.
Force quitting this process gives me back access to the internet instantly. Unfortunately, I suffered a kernel panic (auto restart) a few minutes after force quitting discoveryd. I'm not 100% sure those 2 are related but it would be an odd coincidence as I never experienced had a single kernel on that system. Haven't tried force quitting that process since.
I'm using this iMac in a work environment. (Connected to a windows file server and exchange)
This issue has been happening 2-3 times a day since the day I upgraded to Yosemite.
Any pointers on what could fix this issue ?

I have a java process running on HP-UX with a 1.4.2 JVM. This program is using some third-party code (quartz) to act as a batch scheduler similar to cron. When running in production, the process runs fine for several days and then starts maxing out the CPU. The server has 8 cpu's and the last time the problem occured, 4 of the cpu's were 100% in use with this process.
I've tried sending a "kill -3 pid" but I can't seem to get a thread dump. I've eventually gotten some 700Meg core files. Is there anyway to use these core files to tell me what is going on?
Any ideas on how to trouble shoot this problem? We've used some profilers but we can't duplicate the problem on test servers so we aren't learning anything new.
Thanks,
BrianTry pstack to read the stacks of the threads in the process.
Try pldd to determine the shared libraries in the process then
use truss to trace calls in any of these libraries to determine where
the cycles are being spent. -
ORACLE dispatcher process running high cpu (100%)
Hi:
I'm running Apex 4 on database Oracle 11g 11.2.0.2.0. The cpu consumption is really high after a while. Oracle Dispatcher process goes 100% cpu for very long time.
Anyone here had the same problem? I'm created more dispatchers to workaround this issue but the problem is not solved. At oracle support seams there's a bug about this issue 14106948, but no solution yet.
Anyone with same problem? Any solution?
Thanks
RicardoYour problem may not be exactly the same as that of the original poster of this thread, and it can be very confusing for everybody if we try to answer more than one question in each thread.
In order for us to give your problem our undivided attention to try to solve it, would you kindly start your own thread, describing the trouble you are having in the fullest detail, including completing your details to show what Mac you are using, what operating system, and what version of the application in question. -
Java process take 100% cpu
Hello,
I have a webapp running on Tomcat 5.0.28/RHEL 3.0. After some time (approximatively 1 hour), a java process take 100% cpu load and never stop, but the application do nothing.
Some detail on my configuration :
Distribution : Redhat Enterprise Linux 3.0 (updated)
Kernel 2.4.21-37.0.1.ELsmp
Glibc 2.3.2-95.37
JVM : JRockit 1.4.2.08 (the last one)
Tomcat : 5.0.28
Server : 2*Xeon 3GHz HT, 2Go RAM
JVM param : -Xmx:256m -Xms:256m
Thanks for your answers ...Try taking thread dump (send a SIGQUIT to JRockit using "kill"). If you
get a thread dump, the VM is alive, and it's probably your java program
that's broken. In that case, make a JRA recording to see what's happening:
http://e-docs.bea.com/jrockit/docs142/usingJRA/jra.html
The methods pane is probably what you're looking for.
If you don't get any thread dump when sending a SIGQUIT to JRockit,
come back here.

IOSD process getting 50 % cpu utilization
HI,
I have VSS running on 2 cisco WS-C4506-E.
My process cpu goes high and when i check IOSD prcoess taking majority of CPU

What is this IOSD process do
ThanksASim,
Is there any chance for you to log a CIsco TAC case so that we login to your device and check what causing the CPU to go high?
Else here is TS method :
====================
1- Check the CPU utilization (Show proc cpu sorted | ex 0.00) >>Check which process is utilizing more CPU usage.
2- Check STP to see if there are any loops (show spann det | in ieee|from|occur|is exec) >> Check for any STP changes for VLAN , If yes then track that vlan and see which inteface is sending and recieving high packets or any drops on that particular interface.
3-Check the CPU packets Stats,
4-Use the following inbuilt non impacting debug to find out the packets going to the CPU(menioned in the same high CPU troubleshooting document)
Switch#debug platform packet all receive buffer
platform packet debugging is on
Switch#show platform cpu packet buffered
Focus on finding any common traits in the packets like srcmac etc.Once we know the bulk of the traffic goingto the CPU the source can be shut off
to bring the CPU down.
Hope that helps,

3rd node is taking 15% of CPU without any load and connection on the server
Hi,
I am struggling to resolve the 3rd node is taking 15% of CPU without any load and connection on the server. but not find clues for this. Please give me some inputs.
The issue is:
We have 8 databases on our 3node RAC (11.2.0.1). One of the performance team guy reported that 3rd node is taking 15%cpu utilization when there is no load and connection to the database and at that time the other 2 node are taking only 1%cpu. even i have checked it by using top command and it is almost given same results.
To come out of this issue, i have two solution in my mind, but i am not sure whether this approach is good or bad. the plans are
(1). shutdown the databases and check the cpu usage. --to findout is there any thing wrong with Kernel parameters or at system level.
(2). Shutdown the databases and CRS on the 3rd node and reboot the server.
If above process is correct then i need to take permission from my manager.
I am total stuck, what i need to do. Is there any other approach to resolve this issue. Please help me, this is very critical issue for me.
Also i have checked from GV$SESSION for the active session, but i didn't find any connection apart from oracle processes.
Thanks in advance.Thank you Guzma for your suggestion,
When i checked the gv$session for the active sessions from only 2databases, Do i need to check in all the databases and make sure there are no active session and try for the 1st solution.
-more over i have observed that one of the oracle process is taking 99% of the 15%cpu when i checked from top command. i have tried to find out the what the session is from below, but it given no results from the 2of the DB's.

How to kill Forms Runaway Process using 95% CPU and running for 2 hours.
We had a situation at E-Business Suite customer (using Oracle VM server) where some of Form processes were not being cleared by form timeout settings automatically.
Also when user exits the form session from front end, the linux form process (PID) and DB session did not exit properly, so they got hung.
They were spiking CPU and memory usage and causing e-business suite to perform slowely and ultimately causing VM host to reboot the production VM guest (running on Linux).
We could see the form processes (PIDs) using almost 100% cpu with "top" command and running for a long time.
Also we verified those Form Sessions did not exist in the application itself.
ie. Using from Grid Control -> OAM-> Site Map -> Monitoring (tab) -> "Form Sessions".
It means that we could safely kill that form process from Linux using "kill -9 <PID>" command.
But that required a continuous monitoring and manual DBA intervention as customer is 24x7 customer.
So, I wrote a shell script to do the following;
• Cron job runs every half an hour 7 days a week which calls this shell script.
• Shell script runs and tries to find "top two" f60webmx processes (form sessions) using over 95% cpu with 2 minutes interval.
• If no process is found or CPU% is less than 95%, it exits and does nothing.
• If top process is found, it searches for its DB session using apps login (with hidden apps password file - /home/applmgr/.pwd).
a. If DB session is NOT found (which means form process is hung), it kills the process from unix and emails results to <[email protected]>
b. If DB session is found, it waits for 2 hours so that form process times automatically via form session timeout setting.
It also emails the SQL to check the DB session for that form process.
c. If DB session is found and it does not timeout after 2 hours,
it kills the process from unix (which in turn kills the DB session). Output is emailed.
This are the files required for this;
1. Cron job which calls the shell script looks like this;
# Kill form runaway process, using over 95% cpu having no DB session or DB session for > 2hrs
00,30 * * * * /home/applmgr/forms_runaway.sh 2>&1
2. SQL that this script calls is /home/applmgr/frm_runaway.sql and looks like;
set head off
set verify off
set feedback off
set pagesize 0
define form_client_PID = &1
select count(*) from v$session s , v$process p, FND_FORM_SESSIONS_V f where S.AUDSID=f.audsid and p.addr=s.paddr and s.process='&form_client_PID';
3. Actual shell script is /home/applmgr/forms_runaway.sh and looks like;
# Author : Amandeep Singh
# Description : Kills runaway form processes using more than 95% cpu
# and Form Session with no DB session or DB session > 2hrs

If you have the same problem with some other unix and DB processes, the script can be easily modified and used.
But use this with thorough testing first (by commenting out <kill -9 $PID1> lines.
Good luck.

Is it possible to create mandatory advertisement without force Run
Hi All
1.We want to create the mandatory advertisement with without force run and want to run it from RAP
2. I already knows that if I will create non mandatory advertisement it will sit in RAP and will not run.
But I want to implement point 1 as I want content to be downloaded in cache quickly and want to run it manually from RAP.Hi Jason
thanks for the reply ,I got answer from your different post ,we can give longer future date to avoid execution of mandatory application .
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/systemcenter/en-US/a327e7ce-58aa-40d5-8fdd-35df1bc414f1/sccm-advertisement-precache-download-mandatory-but-not-force-run?forum=configmgrswdist
actually what I wanted , is to download the application in advance in cache and execute later in future date
every time I was selecting as soon as possible so it was forced run, now I made it future date working accordingly because I am running it from RAP now.
Many Thanks Jason -
Hello,
I'm not 100% sure if the two are related, but I have a client who was seeing 100% CPU usage using Adobe Acrobat Reader X 10.1.2 on Windows XP 32-bit and Firefox 11. The acrord32.exe process would hang around after closing the main window and eventually leading to tons of processes and his CPU at 100% use. I believe disabling Protected Mode may have solved this issue. I didn't see it documented anywhere so I figure I'd post about it here and see if anyone else was seeing this resolved as well.I noticed 'only' 50 % CPU usage. Not during Reader usage with ~ 20 %, but it started after closing main window.
Two instances of acrord32.exe were created - the moment pdf was opened - of which one was using zero CPU.
After opening another pdf, 2 more processes were created, so 4 in total. Have seen 2 of them using 100 %.
Issue is easily recreated.
This is all in 10.1.3, no fix from Adobe, only THE fix from you: turning of Protected Mode!
After which now only one proces is created, with 1 to 3 pdf documents opened at same time.
This instance is then nicely shutdown after the last pfd is closed. -

Choose Restart from the Apple menu. Or, just press the power button and choose Restart.

IPhoto cpu usage high, process isboxd
Hi All
Hoping you could shed some light on an issue i'm having with iPhoto. I've recently noticed that on launch it has been running a process called isboxd, and this is using a high amount of cpu power, and also pushes my core temp up to 80 degrees C. Once i quit iPhoto this process stops and cpu usage drops back to its normal 1%. I've tried quitting the process whilst iPhoto is running and it immediately restarts itself. I have also rebuilt my iPhoto library too and this hasn't sorted the issue either.
My iPhoto library is 56GB
I've only just started noticing this process happening, hopefully someone can shed some light onto what the process is doing, and if i can stop it.Then try to test in a different user account. You might want to enable the guest account for testing. If you are seeing the same proble in a different account, that would show that your iPhoto preferences may be corrupted.
Delete the iPhoto preference file: com.apple.iPhoto.plist from your ~/Library/Preferences folder.
In Lion and Mt. Lion also the cached file in
~/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto
The library is hidden in Mt. Lion: To remove the files:
Click somewhere on the empty Desktop to bring the Finder forward.
Select "Go" in the Finder's main menu bar and hold down the alt/option ⥠key, until you see the "Library" in the drop-down menu. Double click it to open a Finder window, so you can browse the files inside.
Scroll down to the "Preferences" folder and open it.
Remove com.apple.iPhoto.plist
Note: this will reset all iPhoto preference settings to the default values, you may want to take a note of them, before you do that. -

Hi,
we have found 2 computers (Windows XP Pro x86, Windows 7 Pro (not sure x64 or x86) were the latest version use all CPU with multiple processes AcroRead32.exe.
PDF are loaded from local drive.
I've tried on my computer (Windows 10 TP x64). No problem.
PDF size is small (150 KB).
Does anyone experience this problem elsewhere ?
Is there something to check ?
