Installing 10.4 Server on a XServe Dual G5 via remote from a MBP 10.5

I have just purchaced a XServe Dual G5 running 10.3 Server. The admin password is lost (purchased it from a auction). So I purchased a original OS X Server 10.4 bundle (CD and DVD). As the XServe lacks a video card I need to install the server remotely via my Macbook Pro running Leopard (10.5). I've installed the Server Tools (10.5 as 10.4 Server tools won't install) and started the XServe with the 1st CD of OS 10.4. The server started from CD and I have found the IP address the server is using in my DHCP list. The hardware address matches the xserve hardware address and a ping <ip> replies. After this all installation steps fail.
I've tried to use the Server Assistant, no servers found, not in the list, not on the IP.
I've tried to use ssh root@<ip address>, no reaction.
I've tried to use /System/Library/Serversetup/sa_srchr 224.0.0.1, no reply.
I've tried to mount the XServe on Firewire, works fine, but OS 10.4 Server won't install via my MacBook Pro, as this is Intel and my original version of 10.4 server is not universal.
I am getting desparate, is there no way that I can install OS 10.4 on this server? I need 10.4 because I run Filemaker Server, and Filemaker Server does not run on 10.5
Any idea's out there? Please?

Hi everyone, thanks for your reply. I've tried most of these solutions and read all the documents. But it didn't help me any futher. At a point I've got the ssh working, at least, got reply from the server that I had to install the ssh key, so there is communication. But then it stopped all together again. Very frustrating.
I've ordered a video card for this XServe @ 234 euro's, out of frustration, so I will be able to install my original OS 10.4 and upgrade it to the lastest 10.4 version.
I suppose that there is no upgrade .dmg from apple that will allow me to upgrade my 10.4 cd's to 10.4.7 (universal) what will create the possibility to install it from my MBP via firewire. I could not find anything.

  • How to Install FC Server on G5 Xserve

We have an Xserve Dual G5 running OSX Server 10.5.5. I'd like to install FC Server but the installer will not proceed as the graphics card is "not quartz extreme" compatible. Can anyone tell me which PCI graphics card(s) will do the job?
    Thanks
    Fausto

Technically, your server is not a supported host for FCSvr. The only PCI GPU still out there for the Mac is the Radeon 9200, and I don't think it is Quartz Extreme qualified. Apple states that ATi cards must be AGP to support Quartz Extreme.

  • XServe G5 doesn't boot from OSX 10.5 Server Install DVD

After a long and rather happy life with 10.4 Server on my XServe G5 I decided I'd like to check out the ical Server and the other goodies in 10.5 Server.
I still have installer DVD form my maintenance I bought with the XServe.
XServe G5 10.4.11 runs headless, I have ARD
Admin computer is a MBP 17" unibody (INTEL) runing OSX 10.6.2
    A few problems:
Admin tools 10.5 cannot be installed on my MBP -
I downloaded the Admin Tools for 10.6 they 'should' work for this but
I wasn't able to connect to the XServe due to other problems:
    Here what I tried:
Insert OSX10.5Server Install DVD into XServe G5 -> gets ejected (no clue why or where to check why)
Insert OSX10.5Server Install DVD into external FW400 DVD drive -> is mounting, can be chosen as startup drive but reboot always ends up booting from installed 10.4 Server OS.
I also tried doubleclicking the "INstall OSX Server 10.5" Icon when the DVD was mounted but same failure, XServe boots from internal system rather than from install DVD.
Any ideas what I might be doing wrong ?
Any hints how to "service" the existing istallation so it will allow to boot from external (or better internal) DVD drive ?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

The trouble with a headless G5 is you can't see what happens when holding down the option key at boot but an external DVD-drive (if needed) must be firewire on a G5.
An Open Firmware reset sometimes make the computer find firewire drives afterwards.
We have a customer running iCal server for 10-15 people on such a machine but the RAM is "upped" to 5GB. It is also running FileMaker server 10 and filesharing. + Retropect 6.x "Backupserver".
You can run with non-ECC RAM (PC3200) in that Xserve.
It could work OK but expect 100% CPU periodically mostly because of running Python scripts for iCal server.
Keep calendars fresh - don't import/save/keep old events for years back in them.
10.5 iCal server It can't handle too many events in one celandar (1500 max I belive someone found out by testing). I can take "forever" syncing calendar with many events.
iCal server in 10.6 is revised for less resource use.

  • PPD install on MacOSX server ?

    Hello,
we are using 10.4.3 Print Services on 2 xserves for about 14 printers and are having some issues with Xerox printers.
the correct PPD is installed on the clients and according to the Printing Services Manual from Apple it is not necessary to install the PPD's on the server (page 33). (which could be logical because it is not even possible through Server Admin)
Is this correct ? Does anyone has more info on this ?
any help or comments would be great.
    regards,
    Dimi.
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

We have some issues with some Brother printers, the correct PPD is installed on the server, how can I make the clients use the correct PPD, it always defaults to the Generic Postscript, but with these Brother (HL-2070N) it just prints out gobble.
I've found yesterday that you can add an LPR Queue to Open Directory and specify the printer model/ppd which works great when adding manually, how can I tell the clients to use this printer which tells the computer to use a specific driver???

  • Installing 10.5 Server on Macbook pro 2.9.3 extern. HD Issues -booting loop

    Hey all,
    system:
    • macbook pro 2.93
    • external firewire drive
    Objective:
    • installing 10.5 Server from dvd on external drive
    Issue:
    • macbook pro when trying to boot up from the 10.5 Server dvd is stuck in a reboot loop
    Additional info
    • this dvd was used to install on a xserve and works fine
    • holding the option key on boot up shows the dvd as one of the bootable options
    Question:
    • is there any issues in installing 10.5 server through a macbook pro?
    • what can I do to fix this issue?
    Any help would be appreciated.

If this is the latest-generation Mac Book Pro then the minimum OS version it can boot from is 10.5.7.
Therefore you need to ensure that your Install DVD is at least 10.5.7. If it's any earlier it won't boot the MacBook Pro.
Also bear in mind that if this is the OS that came with the XServe, it's likely licensed to the XServe and you can't (legally) install it on another machine (unless, potentially, you've installed some other OS on the XServe).

  • 10.5 Server on Apple XServe M8628LL/A?

two days ago I got an Apple XServe M8628LL/A
it runs Mac OS X 10.4.11 Server, which it runs perfectly fine.
but, there a some features new in Leopard server that I could use.
the server has two 1Ghz G4's and can have up to 2GB of RAM (has 512MB now but I plan to upgrade that by adding three more 512MB modules, I know where I can get them, just need to actually place the order).
meaning, it can run Leopard, it will slow down a bit but, well, I use it for myself also public for a site but, i don't get a lot of visitors and I have a second (dell) server which can "jump-in" if the XServe can't handle all requests, so, I want to upgrade it.
there is one problem though, this model has a CD-ROM drive.
Leopard Server is, TMK, only on DVD.
so, can I get Leopard server on it, and if so, how?
there are two things I came up with but I'm not sure they'll work, leopard server does come at a price so I'd rather not "just try" I'm ok with the system slowing down a bit, but it be a waste if I can't install it.
the things I came up with:
    1. Remote Install Mac OS X, but I'm not sure that also works with Mac OS X Server.
    2. "restore" the install dvd to a firewire drive, as in, make a new partition on my external FireWire drive, make A DMG image of the install dvd and use disk utility's "restore" feature to get the contents of the DVD on the new partition, connect it and boot from the firewire drive,
if it has the contents of the install DVD it should just work as if I was using the DVD, but will it? and it this even legal? I hear that it's not as I would be making a copy of the dvd, yet, at the same time, copyright laws allow to make one copy for personal use, as I'd use if only for the installation that be personal use.
if remote install works that be easier but if not the idea with the FireWire disk is the only thing I know.
I have Leopard (desktop version) on my eMac (see below) and that runs fine, the XServe is faster so I think it will run quite good (at least, I hope).

n.v.m. think I found it, /applications/Server/Server Assistant -> Install Mac OS X Server on a remote computer....

  • Installing Application through terminal session on xserv

    Hey-
I've got a xserv Tiger server, rack-mountable, which just came in. I was hopint there was some way to install software on this machine (i.e. bring up a remote desktop) using an xserver terminal.
I should admit that I am a unix person who has very little experience with MAC, but on similiar Solaris environments, using an xserver (xterm) usually does the trick.
Any help would be appreciated, i.e. setting up VNC, etc...
    Thanks.

If the software is in a package format, .pkg or .mpkg, then you can use the installer command:
    installer -pkg DeveloperTools.mpkg -target /
installer has a pretty good man page.

  • Server Monitor on Xserve running Client OS

I have an Xserve running the regular client OSX (Filemaker Server, didn't see the point in installing the full Server OS). Is there any way to get Server Monitor running? I would like to be able to keep an eye on the hardware functions.

Is there any way other than loading Mac OS X Server, you mean? Not directly.
You could enable and use the [SNMP daemon within the Leopard Mac OS X client|http://www.bynkii.com/archives/2007/12/aprimer_to_snmp_on_mac_os_x1.html], but that won't give you the Server Monitor interface.
Or you could see if the [Lithium software|http://lithiumcorp.com] is sufficient for your needs.
Or you could load the 10-client Mac OS X Server distribution, which has the monitoring stuff baked in.

  • OD Question after installing 10.8 Server

    Hello all,
I am working with Apple support team on this matter but I thought I would reach out to the community as well since the Apple guys seem a little stumped.
    Here is the situation.
We have been using 10.6 Server on our XServe for a few years now. Aside from AFP crashing fairly often (causing our network users to not be able to connect to or loose connection to their home folders), it has been working very well.
Earlier in the year, I worked with Apple tech support to help resolve the AFP problem and the final solution they came up with was to upgrade to 10.8. Well I took it a step further this summer and put in a new hard drive and did a fresh install of 10.8.
I got DNS set up and working, I then enabled Open Directory and did an import from an archive I made on the 10.6 system. So far so good, I have been able to authentiacte to all my AFP shares with existing user accounts, log in to client systems with existing user accounts and successfully bind computers using our DeployStudio workflows. This works for both my 10.8 and 10.6 clients.
So the problem, I created some new accounts using Workgroup manager and was unable to authenticate at a log in screen or when attempting to connect to a share point. I did learn that setting users up in Workgroup manager does not enable all the services for the users, including File Sharing. No problem, I go into Server.app and enable the services I want. I am now able to authenticate to sharepoints with my new users but I can only authenticate at the log in screen on 10.8 clients. When I try on 10.6 clients, I almost immediately get the no go shake.
The Apple tech left me with the request to reimage one of my 10.6 clients so it is fresh, bind it and try again. Well I have done that. Still no go. I am still going to call Apple about it but I am not confident they will be able to resolve it for me. So I am putting this out there to see if anyone has any tips.

Here is what I ended up doing to get all the services automatically enabled whenever I add a user using Workgroup Manager.
I have a group called all staff. This group shows up in both Workgroup Manager and Server.app. In Server.app I gave the All Staff group access to all the services. Now when I add a user with Workgroup Manager, as long as they are placed in the All Staff group, then they automatically inherit the permissions applied to the group. Obviously you could do this for any group and just make sure the user is placed appropriately. Not even Apple recommended that to me while I was troubleshooting this with them.
I don't have any replica's going, so I am not sure what the procedure would be for that but I would assume that since they are replicating that all of the permissions and inherited settings would replicate. But I cannot test that theory.
Also for anyone reading my original post, I was able to fix the problem where my users were only able to log into 10.8 machines and not 10.6. Demoting the Open Directory master and then re-setting it up fixed the problem. Only that deletes all user passwords. Luckily I only have a little over 100 users so we manually entered all the passwords. Probably not the best solution for someone who has thousands.

  • SharePoint Foundation 2013 installed on Windows Server 2012 not sending out email notification

I have a server where i installed SP Foundation 2013 on top of Windows Server 2012. I have configured the SMTP as well as the outgoing SMTP in Central Administration
of SharePoint. When i create an alert on a document library, its did not sent any email notification on the changes made to the document in the document library. So, i created a workflow to send out email using SPD2013. The workflow run, but it cannot sent
out email with error saying that outgoing email is not configured correctly. I have checked with another server which i installed SP foundation 2013 on top of Windows Server 2008 R2 - its sending out email just fine using same configuration and outgoing SMTP.
I need help to resolve this issue or at least the cause of the problem.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Try below:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/13771.troubleshooting-steps-for-sharepoint-alert-email-does-not-go-out.aspx
Go to Central Admin ---->Operations----->outgoing email settings and verify that SMTP server is mentioned correctly
    2) Test the connectivity with the SMTP server.
In order to do that follow these steps:
      Open  cmd
telnet <SMTP server name> 25 ( We connect smtp server to the port 25)
you should see a response  like this 220 <servername> Microsoft ESMTP MAIL Service, Version: 6.0.3790.3959 ready at date and time
Beware that different servers will come up with different settings but you will get something
If you dont get anything then there could be 2 possible reasons, either port 25 is blocked or
the smtp server is not responding.
For testing response from your server
For testing response say ehlo to it.
                            Type :
                                        ehlo <servername>
                            output:
                                        250 <servername> Hello [IP Address]
Now a test mail can be sent from that SharePoint server.
Now we need to enter the From address of the mail.
                          Type :
                           mail from: [email protected]
                           output:
                           250 2.1.0 [email protected]….Sender OK
It's time to enter the recepient email address.
Type : rcpt to: [email protected]
    output:
    250 2.1.5 [email protected]
Now we are left with the data of the email. i.e. subject and body.
    Type : data
    output:
354 Start mail input; end with <CRLF>.<CRLF>
    Type:
subject: this is a test mail
    Hi
    This is test mail body
    I am testing SMTP server.
Hit Enter, then . and then Enter.
    output:
    250 2.6.0 <<servername>C8wSA00000006@<servername>> Queued mail for delivery
    Type: quit
    output:
    221 2.0.0 <servername> Service closing transmission channe
    3)  Check alerts are enabled for your web application
verify if the windows timer service is running or not.
Run this stsadm command to check that
          Stsadm.exe -o getproperty -url http://SharePoint-web-App-URL -pn alerts-enabled
         This should return <Property Exist="Yes" Value="yes" />
If you don’t get this, Enable alerts by:
         stsadm.exe -o setproperty -pn alerts-enabled -pv "true" -url http://SharePoint-web-App-URL
If its already enabled, try turn off and turn on it back.
    4)  Check the Timer job and Properties
           Go to
MOSS 2007:  Central Administration > Operations > Timer Job Definitions (under Global Configuration)
In SharePoint 2010: Central Administration > Monitoring > Review Job Definitions
Check whether the "Immediate Alerts" job is enabled for your web application. check these properties:
                       job-immediate-alerts
                       job-daily-alerts
                       job-weekly-alerts
           stsadm.exe -o getproperty -url "http://Your-SharePoint-web-App-URL" -pn job-immediate-alerts
           The expected output is:
           <Property Exist="Yes" Value="every 5 minutes between 0 and 59"/>.
If you don’t get this, run the following command to set its value.
           stsadm.exe -o setproperty -pn job-immediate-alerts -pv “every 5 minutes between 0 and 59" -url http://Your-SharePoint-web-App-URL
    5)  Check whether the account is subscribed for alerts and it has a valid email account. This should be the first thing to check if the problem persists for some users not for      all.
    6)  Then check if at all those users have at least read permission for the list. Because the first mail should go out for every user without security validation but the next ones       won't be delivered unless the user has at least read
    permission.
    7)  If it is happening for one user, can also try to delete and re add the user in the site.
    8)  Most importantly , you should try this one.
Run this SQL query to the content db < Select * from Timerlock>
This will give you the name of the server which is locking the content database and since when.
In order to get rid of that lock
Go to that server which is locking the content db and then restart the windows timer service.
within some time it should release the lock from content db, if not then at the most stop the timer job for some time
Once the lock will be released then try to send some alerts
You will surely get the email alert.
I found this is the most probable reason for alert not working most of the time. We should start troubleshooting with above steps before coming to this step for any alert email issue but from step 1 to step 7 are best for new environments or new servers.
If the issue is like this ,alert was working before and suddenly stopped working without any environmental change then above conditions in step 1-7 should be ideally fine.
Even after this if it is not working, then you can try these few more steps too
    9)  Try re-registering the alert template:
    stsadm -o updatealerttemplates -url http://Your-SharePoint-Web-App-URL -f  "c:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\TEMPLATE\XML\alerttemplates.xml" -LCID 1033
    10)  Try to clear the configuration cache
If this helped you resolve your issue, please mark it Answered

    Gurus,
If I am not wrong, the Oracle VM Server 2.2.0 installer for 32-bit and 64-bit are the same file.
I have AMD 64 bit machine, when I install Oracle VM Server 2.2.0, it installs as 64-bit.
However due to requirement, I want to install Oracle VM Server in 32-bit mode.
    Will appreciate the steps.
    Regards,
    Krishna

    Krishna,
Please note that the zip file from the Oracle eDelivery/Linux site contains a single Oracle VM server ISO file; this file is used for both x86 and x86-64 hardware. The Oracle VM server install routine automatically detects the hardware platform and installs the appropriate 32-bit or 64-bit Xen hypervisor. Regardless of the hardware platform, 32-bit or 64-bit, dom0 is 32-bit. Will a 32bit dom0 meet your business requirements?
Could you please let us know the business requirements re 32bit?

It is shown on this page:

Is it possible to do this with SBS2008 ?
If "YES", are there any published information about the procedure ?

Yes, it is. Thank you very much.
But there is something that confuses me - I want to migrate from Win2003Std to SBS2008. And also, I want to keep the existing Win2003Std as a second DC for a long time.
But it is written in the shown article:
... After the migration is finished, you must remove the Source Server from the network within 21 days. ...
Is this rule mandatory for the scenarios where the Source Server is Std, not SBS ? As I know, I can have more than one DC(Win2003Std/Win2008Std) together with SBS2003. But what about SBS2008 ?
