10.5 Server on Apple XServe M8628LL/A?

two days ago I got an Apple XServe M8628LL/A
it runs Mac OS X 10.4.11 Server, which it runs perfectly fine.
but, there a some features new in Leopard server that I could use.
the server has two 1Ghz G4's and can have up to 2GB of RAM (has 512MB now but I plan to upgrade that by adding three more 512MB modules, I know where I can get them, just need to actually place the order).
meaning, it can run Leopard, it will slow down a bit but, well, I use it for myself also public for a site but, i don't get a lot of visitors and I have a second (dell) server which can "jump-in" if the XServe can't handle all requests, so, I want to upgrade it.
there is one problem though, this model has a CD-ROM drive.
Leopard Server is, TMK, only on DVD.
so, can I get Leopard server on it, and if so, how?
there are two things I came up with but I'm not sure they'll work, leopard server does come at a price so I'd rather not "just try" I'm ok with the system slowing down a bit, but it be a waste if I can't install it.
the things I came up with:
1. Remote Install Mac OS X, but I'm not sure that also works with Mac OS X Server.
2. "restore" the install dvd to a firewire drive, as in, make a new partition on my external FireWire drive, make A DMG image of the install dvd and use disk utility's "restore" feature to get the contents of the DVD on the new partition, connect it and boot from the firewire drive,
if it has the contents of the install DVD it should just work as if I was using the DVD, but will it? and it this even legal? I hear that it's not as I would be making a copy of the dvd, yet, at the same time, copyright laws allow to make one copy for personal use, as I'd use if only for the installation that be personal use.
if remote install works that be easier but if not the idea with the FireWire disk is the only thing I know.
I have Leopard (desktop version) on my eMac (see below) and that runs fine, the XServe is faster so I think it will run quite good (at least, I hope).

n.v.m. think I found it, /applications/Server/Server Assistant -> Install Mac OS X Server on a remote computer....

  • Is there an Exchange server equivalent for Apple Xserve?

I have an Apple Xserve and I'd like to run something like an Exchange server, to allow my Entourage clients to host calendar, email, Tasks, and addressbooks on there. Is Apple working on anything like this?

    Hi
There should be no need to post in the XServe Forum. The XServe is dedicated server hardware, your question is really about the Server OS. You could browse the Server Forum for more information:
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=96
To answer your question - Yes, absolutely. Kerio Mail Server:
    http://www.kerio.co.uk/kms_home.html
    Zimbra:
    http://www.zimbra.com/products/
Both of these products offer support for iPhone, Treo and Blackberry. KMS has a handy facility where it can remotely 'wipe' a supported mobile device if its been stolen. Although this is speculation and not really 'allowed' on these forums I think Apple is working towards similar features in their forthcoming Server products. Right now Apple's built in mail server is poor in terms of what is offered using the Interface. It's good enough to get you going if all you want are simple Mail Services. It's actually quite good. However if you want more then you there is not much you can't achieve if you're prepared to use the command line. A necessity at some stage if you are contemplating administering a server regardless of its role. Apple are planning to expand what is available by adding 'out of office' and server side 'email rules' facilities in Snow Leopard:
    http://www.apple.com/server/macosx/snowleopard/
You don't have that currently unless you are prepared to install avelsieve:
    http://email.uoa.gr/avelsieve/
I'm not sure how well Apple's built-in Mail Server supports shared contacts and calendars with Microsoft's products? It's been some time but I have had some mixed success in the past. KMS has no problem regardless of platform or what is being used. For PCs it behaves exactly as if it was an Exchange Server.

  • Mapping a network folder stored on an Apple Xserve to a Windows user a/c.

I have a number of domain users who need to get there individual network folder mapped to there profile when they log onto the domain from various MAC in the building.
We use a batch file that maps the users network home folder to there profile when they log onto a PC.
Does anyone know how to do the same process for those same users loggin onto a MAC OS X leopard machine.
Users network folders are stored on a Apple Xserve. Authentication comes first from Windows Server 2003 Active Directory.
(at the moment MAC users accounts are loaded entirely from the Apple Xserve, resulting in the user constantly writing to there profile across the network.
What I would like to do instead is to 'force the local home directory on startup disk', this is an option in directory utility on each mac. This will force the profile to load locally. Then using some sort of script or batch file map the users network home folder to the desktop of the MAC. Therefore reducing traffic across the network as the user profile will be loaded loally and will only be saving to there netowrk folder)
Does this make sense, and advice appreciated...???

Check out the AD-OD Sandbox. I think there may be instructions in there on how to do it:

  • Intel Xserve and Apple Xserve Diagnostics

Has anyone figured out how to run the Apple Xserve Diagnostics (AXD) that is included with the new servers? The documentation is very poor to say the least, in once instance the user guide says to see the user guide for more information. Another pdf says to refer to www.apple.com/server/documentation for information on AXD yet this site has no mention of the intel Xserve yet. I've searched the service manual and got much of the same run around.
I've managed to install the AXD on another Mac OS X server and activated the netboot image but it does not appear to run in the same manor as the Apple Remote Diagnostics for the Xserve G5s. Any help is appreciated!
      Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    David
Unless someone knows different the only place I know of is here:
    https://gsx.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/GSXAppServer.woa
You need an Apple ID. To access the Service Source you'll probably need a Tech ID. Alternatively you could apply for the CD from Apple directly? Or from an Apple Authorized Repair Specialist. You could take the XServe directly to either of those locations and see if they can run the Diagnostic tools for you?

  • Help - Migrating from Tiger to Leopard Server via Apple Maintenance Program

Hi, I'm to upgrade an Apple Xserve running Mac OS Tiger to Leopard. There was an Apple Maintenance Program purchased for this Xserve. I plan to do a clean install on the server, however, I don't know where to find Leopard's serial number or if I need one or if I can do a clean install via AMP.
This was the first AMP sold in my country I think and the VAR was a little clueless, it wasn't our plan to upgrade until now and I don't know who to ask.
I have the media, but it wasn't the one that apple sent, the VAR just made me a copy of a Leopard Server. I have the license program agreement, there it is stated the License Number (amp - xx -xxxxx format), the License Date, the Sales Order # and something label PO.
Could somebody please point me out how should I proceed? The server is being moved from its intended use so a clean install is no problem (and prefered).
    Thanks in advance
    Rafael

You should get the media directly from Apple complete with "xsvr-"serialnumber in an envelope in the (snail-)mail.
We have customers which didn't get the serial or DVD in the envelope so we had to contact Apple again.

  • Apple Xserve Diagnostics - where?

I bought an Xserve in October 2007. It came with the Leopard Server disks. I would like to test the hardware, due to some odd problems I'm having, as well as a failed upgrade attempt to Snow Leopard, but my Admin Tools disk does not contain the AXD program, or in fact any apparent diagnostics. I also cannot find anything in Apple's downloads or support site that would help. How do I get the diagnostics so that I can test my server?
    Thanks

    Hi Niel,
I believe your right. I just dont understand how they could not mention this in the manual. It clearly states:
    Goal:
Start up the AXD (Apple Xserve Diagnostics) EFI tools located on the admin tools disk
    Method:
D (make sure the Admin Tools disk is inserted)
It would have been nice of them to make a little note stating your comment.
My net card can't run in full duplex, whereas my MacBook Pro can, so I suspect a hardware failure. The logic board has been replaced once already. I suppose there is no other solution, than to pull the Xserve from the rack and have it serviced unless the Apple Enterprise guys has another idea.
    Thanks mate,

Is PXE boot supported on Apple Xserve servers ?

    Hi
PXE Boot is not supported on the platform at all - Server or Client. Apple uses BSDP - Boot Service Discovery Protocol.

  • Spotlight Indexing on Windows server? vs Xserve.

    Hello,
I need some help defending the purchase of an Apple Xserve running 10.5 server and 10.5 clients. We need to upgrade from 10.3 server to 10.5 to take advantage of Spotlight Indexing and fast searches. The Enterprise I.T. folks are saying we can use a Windows file server to do the same thing for less $$$.
    1) does Spotlight indexing work on Macintosh file services for windows.
    2) Is the indexing done workstation side or server side, what are the advantages of doing the indexing on the server side with Spotlight server (services) on the OSX server.
I need help----their closing in on me....I'm out numbered in the thousands.
    Thanks,
    Rick

You might try editing your registry so that *.cfm, *.cfc, and other ColdFusion related files are treated as text files by the Windows search feature.  See link below.

  • Old Apple xserve Raid 1.24 and New Intel Xserve

    Guys
Quick question - i currently have an Apple G5 xserve setup with an apple xserve raid {1.24} as a file sharing server in my studio
ideally i am looking to get my xserve upgraded to the new intel version but would like to know if the old xserve raid would still be compatible with the new xserve?
any info would be super appreciated!

Yes - it will work just fine. The only issue is that you'll need a new Fiber channel card for the Intel XServe since it only supports PCIe cards, not PCI-X used by the previous XServes.

  • Apple XServe G5 Won't Start Up

    Hi,
My apple Xserve G5 has stopped turning on after I shut it down. When turned ut back on I pressed the power button all of the fans spin up and the System Indicatior light turns Solid Amber/Orange and does not flash. I tried leaving it on for a long period of time to see if it would start up on its own but the fans became progressivly faster and faster until I turned it off. I have tried what apple says to do and hold the indicator light when turning on the then releasing it when the processor lights start flashing. Other than turning on and off it is completely unresoponsive. Any Ideas?

Thanks... I found that the power supply on neither my G5 or G4 would start up from cold? I just leave them plugged in to keep the psu warm now.
    Thanks,

  • Apple Xserver Raid, 1 raid mounts and the other raid does not mount

Apple Xserver Raid, 1 raid mounts and the other raid does not mount but all the lights on the drives are green

Kind of lacking in detail there...
Did the other volume mount in the past? and it stopped working? When? What changed?
What does Raid Admin.app have to say about it?
Does it see the drives? a RAID set on those drives? A link on the fiber channel connection?

  • Safari 5.1.4 update breaks SoftwareUpdate on 10.6.8 server, on 2008 xserve, IFJS_PropertyListConvertToType() called with type=3

We've got 3 new-to-us 2008 xserves that we put into service last week.  Installed 10.6, updated up to 10.6.8 and took all of the software updates up until Safari 5.1.4.  Computers all work fine.  Then take the safari update -- afterwards, SoftwareUpdate crashes a bit after launch, gui or command line.  The error when you do it on the command line is "IFJS_PropertyListConvertToType() called with type=3".
Over on the osx snow leopard server discussion board, several other people are reporting that they have the problem but only with the 2008 xserve, the 2009 xserve is just fine.  (No reports yet about the 2006 xserve.)
I have reported the bug to apple, and they asked for a crash report, which I gave them.  It's bug #11048593  (not sure if those are publicly viewable...)

We’re having the same issue on our 2008-era Xserve, but not on our other Snow Leopard servers and clients.
Apple released an Apple Software Installer Update 1.0 release today which may address the problem.  See http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1512  Needless to say, you need to install this update manually using the downloaded DMG.
I’ll be installing this update this evening on our systems to see if this resolves our issue.

  • Installing 10.4 Server on a XServe Dual G5 via remote from a MBP 10.5

I have just purchaced a XServe Dual G5 running 10.3 Server. The admin password is lost (purchased it from a auction). So I purchased a original OS X Server 10.4 bundle (CD and DVD). As the XServe lacks a video card I need to install the server remotely via my Macbook Pro running Leopard (10.5). I've installed the Server Tools (10.5 as 10.4 Server tools won't install) and started the XServe with the 1st CD of OS 10.4. The server started from CD and I have found the IP address the server is using in my DHCP list. The hardware address matches the xserve hardware address and a ping <ip> replies. After this all installation steps fail.
I've tried to use the Server Assistant, no servers found, not in the list, not on the IP.
I've tried to use ssh root@<ip address>, no reaction.
I've tried to use /System/Library/Serversetup/sa_srchr 224.0.0.1, no reply.
I've tried to mount the XServe on Firewire, works fine, but OS 10.4 Server won't install via my MacBook Pro, as this is Intel and my original version of 10.4 server is not universal.
I am getting desparate, is there no way that I can install OS 10.4 on this server? I need 10.4 because I run Filemaker Server, and Filemaker Server does not run on 10.5
    Any idea's out there? Please?

Hi everyone, thanks for your reply. I've tried most of these solutions and read all the documents. But it didn't help me any futher. At a point I've got the ssh working, at least, got reply from the server that I had to install the ssh key, so there is communication. But then it stopped all together again. Very frustrating.
I've ordered a video card for this XServe @ 234 euro's, out of frustration, so I will be able to install my original OS 10.4 and upgrade it to the lastest 10.4 version.
I suppose that there is no upgrade .dmg from apple that will allow me to upgrade my 10.4 cd's to 10.4.7 (universal) what will create the possibility to install it from my MBP via firewire. I could not find anything.

  • Leopard Server on G4 XServe?

I run a lab of 31 Intel iMacs (plus a number of assorted machines around the school) using a G4 1.33 GHz XServe with 1.25 GB of RAM. The lab iMacs and the server are both currently running 10.4.11.
I have purchased an unlimited license of Leopard server, but am hesitant to install it at this busy moment in the school year. I have two questions:
    1. Will my old G4 XServe handle Leopard Server well?
    2. If so, would I be advised to update my lab clients to Leopard as well?
    Any advice would be helpful.

From experience, the G4 server does Leopard pretty well. 10.5.0 would occasionally deadlock the server when running multiple services and mail services would run away under 10.5.1. 10.5.2 is so new I can only say that three days and nothing to report. You might want to max the RAM out depending on how many services you are running. Recall that a G4 Xserve can take a max of 2 GB of RAM so there is not much room to grow - but it will be worth it if you have a lot of services.
Also, the 1.33 model commonly came with only a CD Rom drive. Leopard is DVD media only. So you will need to be creative and either find an external firewire DVD drive, clone the install media to an external drive, install in firewire target disk mode, or do a net install.
Additionally, if you are doing any level of RAID on the system, I usually recommend backing up the data, breaking the raid, and then recreating it. While Tiger to Leopard does not seem as vital, Panther to Tiger was an issue because the Apple software raid went from version 1 to 2. Old habits die hard. I still do clean installs from major release to major release.
And the final piece of advice is - why change mid semester? If you have a stable, working environment, let it play out until you have a break. While there are some compelling reasons to upgrade to Leopard, I doubt you will use many of them, especially if you have no time to explore and learn. Also, Leopard is still a little shaky with AD integration so if you have a parent directory service, stay on 10.4.11 until Apple gets a few more releases out (I will say that 10.5.2 is much better, but I am waiting for the shoe to drop and I am basing this on one environment with a single domain). Plus, while you have not mentioned what the lab is used for, I would bet a round of drinks that those iMacs have some piece of software that is not yet Leopard compatible. Adobe just released the Acrobat compatibility fix. InDesign is rocky (although 10.5.2 seems to have smoothed things up). Hang in there and finish out the school year/semester.
What is the rush. Hold off until the students are out of the way. That way you do not disrupt the classroom experience or worse, shut it down because of a blown upgrade.
    Hope this helped.
