Installing arch - internet via openVPN

Hi guys,
I finally want to install arch. However, I can only establish a internet connection via openVPN (the university provides internet service at my dorm). So how do i do this?
How I would do it:
Stop dhcpcd service (necessary?)
Identify Ethernet controller and activate it (both steps according to this.
Install openVPN from USB stick if necessary (I read somewhere that openVPN is available on the install media?)
Establish openVPN connection according to uni's instructions
But what do I do once I installed the base system and chrooted? Which one of the following is the correct one? Plus I need to install openVPN via pacman -S openvpn, right?
Thanks for your help, I hope I can finally use arch soon!

I just wanted to report back, I performed the above and was able to install Arch remotely via SSH.  Thank you for your confirmation, it was what I needed.

  • Failure to install Arch Linux via netinstall AIF; PGP key issues

    Hello,
I'm am attempting a fresh install Arch Linux on a clean machine: Dell 1420, 4GB RAM. I am using the archlinux-2012.02.09_04-00-01-netinstall-dual.iso installer.
Installation progresses nicely through the package selection (I choose core, core-dev, xfce, and xorg packages only, to keep it simple for now). The packages download quickly, and then the installation fails during installation indicating that none of the PGP keys are known for any of the downloaded files. The process essentially aborts and I press 'Continue' returning me to the main menu. I have repeated this process several times.
What needs to be done to install Arch Linux?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
Thanks, I have been through the Beginners Guide. I just want to get Arch Linux to "start" with a very basic GUI. during one of my installation iterations I did install only 'core' files, but the same failure occurred. so I'm at a loss as to how to get even a basic installation to take hold. Thoughts on the pgp key issues?
    Thanks.
Update: I've switched to using the default net installer (2011.08.19) and the installation succeeded!

  • [SOLVED] external USB HDD fails to install arch w/boot device ERROR

I've been working on installing arch linux via an external USB harddrive (specifically seagate free agent go 320GB) for 1 week now, and everytime I failed - until TODAY! thankfully I found this post, where user Dieter@be references this link, which displays BUG ID#17231 at the top titled "Can't boot LiveCDs 2009.08 (/dev/archiso doesn't show up)". the bug report states ::
I can't boot the LiveCDs 2009.08, neither netinstall nor core.
When it tries to access /dev/archiso it shows these messages:
:: Waiting for boot device ...
    Waiting 30 seconds for device /dev/archiso ...
ERROR: boot device didn't show up after 30 seconds ...
    Falling back to interactive prompt
You can try to fix the problem manually, logout when you are finished
    ramfs$
reading further thru this bug report, I found a very insightful post by Heiko Baums (cyberpatrol) where he says the following, and I quote ::
Problem found. The link /dev/archiso wasn't created.
    After
    ramfs$ cd /dev
    ramfs$ ln -s sr0 archiso
    ramfs$ exit
    it continued booting correctly.
And sg was also loaded after this. ;-)
as you see, the bug report was for the CD version, not the USB version - yet, my issue with the USB bootdisk was the same, (no matter which boot disk I tried = netinstall, core, .img, .iso, etc) meaning I got the EXACT same error = "ERROR: boot device didn't show up after 30 seconds ..." ! well, I figured that I'd try one of the new fancy ISOs found @ http://build.archlinux.org/isos/ - specifically I use/used archlinux-2010.03.04-netinstall-x86_64.iso.
upon running Unetbootin from windows 7, and choose to install the ISO archlinux-2010.03.04-netinstall-x86_64.iso to my first partition on my USB harddrive (that first partition being FAT32, and had already been set as bootable previously), that completed successfully. I rebooted, and choose to boot from USB drive, the ISOlinux bootloader came up as normal, I choose DEFAULT and off it went.... sure enough, it errored out at the same place as listed in the bug report ::
:: Waiting for boot device ...
    Waiting 30 seconds for device /dev/archiso ...
ERROR: boot device didn't show up after 30 seconds ...
    Falling back to interactive prompt
You can try to fix the problem manually, logout when you are finished
    ramfs$
this time though, I issued the following 2 commands ::
    ln -s /dev/sdb1 /dev/archiso
    exit
from there, EVERYTHING worked as it should!
to recap: the solution for me was create a symbolic link pointing /dev/archiso => to my partition which held the archlinux netinstall (which is where I told Unetbootin to install it to)! done and done. I felt this needed to be posted here, as I could not find this solution after MANY google searches, archlinux wiki searches, forum searches, etc. honestly, I think it would be prudent to have this tidbit of information added to the Install from USB stick archwiki page as a side note to those that may run into this issue.
this is not the FIRST time I have run into this problem with a USB install of archlinux, but this is the FIRST time I found a fix! thanks to all the great posts I reference here, without this information I dont think I would have been able to install archlinux on my new alienware m11x laptop.
    -peace-
PS: no amount of rootdelay=XX  nor pmedia=usb  nor usbdelay=XX would work in my above attempts either.

FAT16 here. Parted Magic sees my USB drive as sdd. I tried your way and surprise, surprise, it didn't work.
    ln -sf /dev/sdd /dev/archiso
    mount -t vfat /dev/archiso /bootmnt
    mount : Invalid argument
I thought maybe you meant mount -f vfat /dev/archiso /bootmnt instead. I tried it too, it resulted in a kernel panic.
What else can I try besides installing from a IDE/SATA CD drive ? Because this issue is NOT solved. At least not for me. Wonder if "archlinux-2010.04.05-netinstall-i686.iso" from the here will solve it (really hope so).
SOLVED IT HERE (with yet another image): http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=93645

It sounds noobish but my friends like to know if they can install Arch Linux without Internet connection ?

    mcmillan wrote:
The core iso should be all you need, just boot off that to start the installation. It's been a while since I did an install, but somewhere along the way it gives you an option to install off the cd or do a net install. You just need to choose the cd installation.
That being said, all you'll have without internet will be what's on the cd, so you'll be left with a pretty minimal install. If you want to update and install additional software then you'll either need to get the computer temporarily  connected, or download the packages on a different computer and transfer them.
I am looking to do something similar. I have the core system installed on an older laptop, but I cannot get the wireless working (it has no ethernet). I've tried downloading the libgl packagesfrom a mirror to a thumbdrive, but it's a dependency nightmare. Is there a better way to do this?

'The beginners guide and the install guide in the wiki cover this, i believe it also has a section for connecting to an encrypted access point. So to answer your question: yes its possible and no its not too complicated and yes there is a tutorial on this

You need to do a clean reinstall.
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
    * Firefox 5.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
    * Uninstall your current Firefox version.
    * Do not remove personal data when you uninstall the current version.
Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
    * It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Firefox Profile Folder] and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.

  • Installed Arch on external usb drive: Drive errors after reboot

I installed Arch on my external usb hard drive and everything seemed to be working fine. After rebooting though, I had a bunch of filesytem errors (ext3) and the system was unstable. I am guessing that this has to do with the unloading of the usb modules at shutdown. If this happens to early, then the root drive doesn't have a chance to shutdown properly, hence the filesystem errors.
Anyone know how to solve this?
    Thanks!

EtreCheck looks at your log files for any kernel I/O errors. That is what it is reporting. EtreCheck just reports what it finds and tries to avoid judgements exception the most extreme cases. The drive might be OK. I am seeing more reports of this than I would have expected. It may just be a problem with Yosemite. It really prefers SSD disks in all cases. On my own machine, I have seen a slow external drive exhibit classic failure symptoms and sounds when connected via USB2. But then when I switched to FW800, it was fine. Other people are reporting that when they downgraded back to Mavericks, their disk errors went away.
So, I don't have a good answer for you. The drive might be bad, and it might be fine. Yosemite is definitely having problems with it. You may experience performance problems with that drive attached.

If you have a Mid 2010 model: Computers that can be upgraded to use OS X Internet Recovery. If later then see below:
Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
If you have an earlier model:
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • Before I install Arch w/XFCE on my old computer...

I'm installing Arch on an older computer and I want to keep it kind of lean. The computer is a PIII @ 1Ghz w/512MB RAM, so it isn't old-old; but it's just old enough that I don't want a lot of extra junk, which is precisely why XFCE was my choice of DE.
I'm doing my homework and read the Arch XFCE wiki and saw a package called "xfce-goodies." What is in that package?
Also, this computer has a wireless internet connection, so two questions:
1: Will I be able to connect to the web before I need to install xorg and networkmanager?
2: Will nm-applet work on the xfce-panel, or will I have to do tricks to get it to work. I know it works in Xubuntu, but that doesn't mean it works in default xfce.

pogeymanz wrote:Actually, my #1 question was the other way around from how you answered it. I know that I need to be online to get xorg, but I was asking if I will be able to GET online without installing netcfg2/whatever. And now that I think about it, probably not... I will just need to plug into the network for a few hours and then move back to where it belongs I guess.
A package called wireless_tools is included in the install CD which allows you to use the CLI to configure a wireless network. See the 'connect manually' section in this gentoo wiki article: http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Wireless_C … nd_Startup
AFAIK this should be enough to get your wireless going.
[edit: Tigrmesh is right, the netcfg package is in core now, so get the new iso's]

  • Setting up Network & Internet via Router on Solaris 10 (x86)

The problem that I have seems to be a very common one. As a regular windows user I have never had any reason to use any other Operating Systems, however, studying oracle on Sun Systems through university has meant that unless I get my own Solaris machine set up I will be unable to work on my assignments form home.
This being said when it comes to anything other than windows I am a little stuck. The interface of Solarix 10 is relatively straight forward and I have managed to set the majority of the system up, however, one area that seems to baffle me is the network side of things.
I have spent the past few hours looking over this forum and bashing google but I have had no luck. From what I can tell Solaris is not picking up my Network Interface Card (MSI KT4AV) built-in.
I connect to the internet via a D-Link DSL 604GT. The network consists of 3 wired connections and about 5 wireless laptops/pc's and such.
Having said that I have searched for drivers for my card with no luck. Is there anyway to confirm that my network card isnt being detected or is this not the case.
If you want more information about my problem then please let me know.

BTW I also dug up this info about the VIA VT6103 LAN controller that according to the MSI site your mobo uses.
    according to this thread
    http://forums.viaarena.com/messageview.aspx?catid=6&threadid=66105&enterthread=y
You can go to the windows update site and it will scan and detect the controller and load the driver, not sure how that works but it is in the thread. Also if you are fealing up to it according to the thread you could go to
    http://homepage2.nifty.com/mrym3/taiyodo/eng/
and #3 is a driver reported by some to work for the VIA VT6103 LAN controller which is known as the Via Rhine II Fast Ethernet Adapter.
I myself am using #17 the nfo driver for my nvidia nforce2 built in nic. The afore mentioned Install check tool reported the nifty web site as the location of my third party driver. It works like a champ.

Although it may ultimately be necessary to perform a Factory Default Reset on the AirPort Extreme and start over with a new configution, we can first try to see if things will work with the existing settings on the device.
Push the reset button (if present) on the cable modem
Power off the modem by pulling the power cable
Remove the internal battery from the modem (if easily accessible)
Power off the AirPort Extreme and every other device on the network....order is not important
Wait at least 20 minutes....longer is better
Re-install the battery in the modem if it was removed previously
Make sure that the Ethernet cable from the modem is connected to the WAN port (circle of dots icon) on the AirPort Extreme
Power up the modem and let it run 4-5 minutes buy itself
Power up the AirPort Extreme and let it run 4-5 minutes
Then power up each other network device one at a time about a minute apart
Check for a good Internet connection on the network with all devices
If still no luck, you will need to perfom a Factory Default Reset on the AirPort Extreme as follows:
Pull the power plug from the back of the AirPort Extreme
Hold in the reset button and keep holding it another 8-10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the power back in to the AirPort Extreme
Release the reset button and allow 25-30 seconds for the AirPort Extreme to restart to a slow, blinking amber light
Then open AirPort Utility end reconfigure the AirPort Express again.

  • What would be the best way to install Arch, if I have Broadcom wifi?

I can boot into an Arch USB disk, but I can't connect to the Internet, since my laptop doesn't have ethernet and the wifi card is Broadcom, which requires the `broadcom-wl` package. What would be the easiest way of proceeding with this install? On IRC, I was advised to either: (1) boot into another distro, connect to the Internet there, then chroot into the Arch USB image, and download the additional packages from there, or (2) download the `broadcom-wl` package from the AUR, and a build environment, transfer these files to the USB system, and then compile and install the module there. Both of these solutions seems rather complicated to me. With (1), I was having difficulty mounting the arch .img as a drive using Ubuntu, since Ubuntu's `mount` command needs a filetype, and didn't seem to like any of the filetypes I tried. With (2), I have a feeling this would be fairly complicated--I'm not sure which binaries I can install for my system, or how to install packages that I downloaded offline.

I was having difficulty mounting the arch .img as a drive using Ubuntu, since Ubuntu's `mount` command needs a filetype
    Not sure what you mean?
I too had issues with my internet, eventually I installed arch from Ubuntu. I used bootstrap image and it worked as advertized in the wiki.
EDIT: If you using Ubuntu then don't forget to create '/run/shm' otherwise pacstrap will fail.
