Installing Leopard on older Mac

I have a MBP with a 2.4 ghz SR cpu/4 gb ram and a 160 gb 7200rpm hard drive that I bought about 14 months ago and it came with Tiger and now runs 10.4.11
I would like to install Leopard but I am wondering if doing so will hurt its performance in any way?
Is it good enough to run Leopard as well or perhaps better than Tiger?
If I install, should I do a clean install and reinstall all of my apps as well?
I definitely do not want any problems caused by just installing over the current setup.
Also, besides my personal files, how do you back up the mail settings and emails, the internet settings and the address book?
Thanks a lot for any advice.

Hi - the specs of your MPB are fine and Leopard should run absolutely great in my opinion. How much RAM do you have installed presently, as perhaps upgrading to 4GB (Your machine's maximum) will enhance your experience.
When installing you should be given the opportunity to "Upgrade" - i.e. retain all files and settings. If your present system is running well there is no need to perform a clean install.
However, as in all cases where touching the OS are concerned I recommend a full backup just to be on the safe side before you start upgrading.

  • Installing Leopard on a Mac Pro

As I am a bit of a scaredy cat, I have put off installing Leopard on my Mac Pro. This is a work machine and although I have another G5 that is perfectly usable if this machine went belly up I have still not bit the bullet so to speak... until now.
I'd like to install Leopard and wanted to do what I usually do which is a complete erase and install rather than the standard migration. I have always had problems with this and so this is my preferred route. Since the Mac Pro comes with 3 extra bays in which to put hard discs, am I able to put in a new drive start up the mac from a Leopard install disc and install Leopard on this drive. Or does it always install to the drive in bay one. My ideal set up would be to have both operating systems and install all the apps I use on Leopard in a methodical way, testing as I go along. This was how I migrated from Panther and I am happy to do this although it does take a little longer.
Another solution is to do a migration as well I guess to see how this would go. Can a migration be done from the internal drive in bay one or would I be better off Carbon Copy Cloning my Tiger disc to an external drive and using this instead. Since the drives are so easy to swap in and out I figured this is an option, but don't know.
The only other thing is I use the new Adobe CS3 apps which require internet enabling. I can have 2 versions of say After Effects at a time on 2 different macs. I can install on a third but have to disable one on one of the others. If I have AE installed on both Leopard and Tiger on the same machine does this mean I have to disable it in Tiger before I switch to the other Leopard install. Confusing isn't it.
Anyway hope some of you more technical people out there can help with some of these questions
    all the best

The drive bay doesn't matter. You can install onto any drive,

You can use Migration Assistant to migrate from internal drives. It is safest to just migrate data, not applications. Install the latest versions on the applications.

It depends on how Adobe does it. If they just look at the hardware configuration, you could activate the new copy without affecting the old one. If they look at the version of OSX, or the disk drive, you may have to deactivate the one you aren't using before it will let you activate the other.

  • Installing Leopard on a Mac Pro with Snow Leopard

I have several applications that are not yet compatible with Snow Leopard, I've just bought a Mac Pro 8 core and It comes with snow leopard, is there a problem if I install Leopard 10.5.8 on the Mac Pro and migrate all my information from my Mac Book Pro ?

There is a problem, unfortunately. A Mac can't run an older version of OS X than the version that shipped with it. See here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2186

  • Leopard on older mac?

Does anyone have experience with installing Leopard on an older mac? I have a powermac with dual G4 processors running at 867 Mhz - the bare minimum Mhz-wise of what Apple recommends for Leopard.
I want to know if it's worthwhile to upgrade this machine to Leopard, or if the machine will crawl performance-wise after the upgrade.

I decided to take everyone's advice. I upgraded my powermac and I bought a new macbook.
Since everyone knows Leopard runs well on a new macbook, I'll instead tell you about performance on my PowerMac G4 867 Mhz: Pretty darn good. I figured I'd have to back the change out, but no. Everything I used to do on my mac is just as fast now - if not faster - than on Tiger. Now, some of the new eye candy is pokey, especially compared to my macbook. E.g. there's a noticeable pause when bringing up quickview or one of those spring loaded thingies on the dock (I forget the marketing term for them). But web browsing, iPhoto, mail and other fun things work wonderfully on my new OS. As does e.g. the screen sharing.
All in all - if you have a mac that is as good or better than this, you shouldn't hesitate to upgrade.

  • New mac mini server: Install OS on older Mac Mini?

I have an UBUNTU server running on the network and was thinking of replacing it with the new Mac Mini Server edition. I also have an older (2009 - intel) Mac Mini.
I was wondering if I could install the OS X Server OS that comes with the NEW mini on the OLDER Mac Mini and reformat the newer server as a "normal" workstation.
I can deal with the optical drive issue. I'm just wondering if the OS X Server software is tied to the newer hardware in any way.
I'd be saving about $300 this way - not a big deal but still worth it. The "traditional" way would be to buy an new Mac mini as a workstation and a copy of Mac OS X Server for the older Mac Mini

No. That OS can only be installed on the Mac model it shipped with.

  • How to install Lion on older Mac Pro

I had a Macbook Pro that I installed Lion onto. The Macbook pro overheated and is now dead. I'd like to install Lion on my older Mac Pro (can't install Maverick on this computer) and when I go to the app store it says Lion isn't available in the U.S. Anyway to get it onto this computer? If not, I have no way of syncing this Mac.

Then: Contact Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers.

  • CAN I INSTALL LEOPARD ON MY MAC?

I have a Mac Pro. I thought I had more than enough space on my computer to go from Tiger to Leopard. .....Problem is, I put the Leopard disk in my drive, click on the install, but the screen goes grey and there is a big circle with a line through it (like a no smoking sign without the cigarette) that appears - then the computer spits out the software disk and I'm back to the desktop without any further installation options.
Is this happening because it's telling me I don't have enough memory? I'm perplexed...Help?
    My system is as follows:
    Hardware Overview:
    Model Name: Mac Pro
    Model Identifier: MacPro1,1
    Processor Name: Dual-Core Intel Xeon
    Processor Speed: 3 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 2
    Total Number Of Cores: 4
L2 Cache (per processor): 4 MB
    Memory: 4 GB
    Bus Speed: 1.33 GHz
    Boot ROM Version: MP11.005C.B08
    SMC Version: 1.7f10

Memory is not the problem. 4 GB is more than enough to support Leopard. The slashed circle is an indicator that the selected startup disk does not contain a viable system. Ejecting the disk at startup is an indicator that the Mac cannot read it. IOW, the signs point to a defective disk or optical drive.
    1. Check the disk for scratches, blemishes, or contamination like sticky fingerprints. Clean the disk if dirty & try again. If visibly scratched or blemished, return it to an Apple Store for replacement.
    2. Try starting up from another DVD like your original Tiger system disk. (Don't install anything.) If your Mac starts up OK from another disk, the Leopard DVD is probably defective even if not visibly so. Take it back to an Apple Store for replacement.

  • Unable to install Flash on older Mac-running 10.5.8

Help! Is anyone else unable to install an older version of Flash on their less-then brand new computer(PowerMacG4)?? I'm running 10.5.8. I've downloaded the Uninstaller(which has a pink x in the upper-right corner) but two versions of Flash remain on my computer. When I try to install the version of Flash which adobe has recommended I get this message:
             Adobe®Flash®Player cannot be installed.
Devices with PowerPC processsors are no longer
supported. Click below to download the last version
             Flash Player for PowerPC.
             Get Flash Player for PowerPC
I then click the"Get Flash…” which takes me to the same page which asks for the operating system I have and the version I need, I type in what they offer and go through the same thing.

Pulled this paragragh from an article talking about Apple pulling Flash from iOS in favor of HTML5..."Mac users take note: Flash requires OS X 10.6 or later running on an Intel platform since Adobe removed support for PowerPC Macs in Flash 10"
Not really sure what that all means, I believe I am not intel but PC. I will look into HTML5

  • Get error when trying to install Leopard on Power Mac G5

    Specs are G5 1.8 GHz
    1 GB of RAM
    80 GB HDD
Error is: Mac OS X cannot be installed on this computer: this software cannot be installed on this computer.
I am using retail Mac OS X install disc.\
    Any ideas?

None of the Gray Discs will work, they're all machine specific, & IntelMac only too.

That one only works on certain model MBPs, for 15 inch MacBook Pros manufactured between October 2008 and June 2009.
Perhaps if you had the Black Retail Leopard Disc & put it in the MBP's drive, then booted the MBP into Target mode...

Then boot the G5 with the Option key held down, it may work, not certain

  • Can I install leopard on new mac pro intel machine

This machine came with Snow leopard on it but it is conflicting with a USB 3.0 card I have been trying to install.
I THINK it is conflicting because I have a similar card on a 2009  Mac Pro intel,
running Leopard and I have not had one issue since installing IT, many months ago.
So I thought I would put in a new HD (larger 2TB) and start a fresh install and go down to the Leopard so the USB 3.0 PCI card will work!
When I do the reboot to instal from the disc, it just sits on a grey screen for 15 min before I gave up.
I replaced the Leopard disc with a Snow Leopard disc and the boot from disc went as normal.
    So..........

    Like I said, issues.

  • Install Leopard on a mac mini

Thinking about upgrading to a mini and was wondering if Leopard or Snow Leopard can be installed on the new minis that ship with Lion. I'l love to use Lion but would have to upgrade all my third party software and thats not possible at the moment. Any advice is appreciated....

No. Snow Leopard cannot be installed on new Minis. Their hardware specifically requires Lion. Same with new MBAs.

  • Install Leopard Server Onto Mac Mini via Firewire Target Disk Mode?

From the answers I have seen, so far anyway, the short of it is this can be done. Other than partitioning the Mini's hard drive as a GPT, which I don't know how to do.
Is there anyway to install via firewire target disk mode? The Server Assistant on my MacBook Pro wants to connect to the Mini via a network connection... but, the Mini has no monitor and no OS installed (it has an empty 500 GB hard drive). Thus, I can't get them to talk to each other over a network connection, can I?
I could try and plug it into a monitor and install locally, but the Install disc is on my MBP and currently it is in Firewire TDM, with the Mini's hard drive mounted on the Pro.
I don't want to have to get a monitor to do this... The Mini is brand new 1.83 with 2 GB of RAM and a Samsung 500 GB internal hard drive. It is mounted and the Server Installer sees it, but cannot use it because it just sees it as a firewire drive (the installer won't install to these drives I guess).
    Any suggestions?

you can configure it using server admin and workgroup manager running on another machine. you can also use screen sharing/ard if you need to see what you're doing. as long as it has a valid address on the lan, you can configure it. just be sure to give it a static address is you're going to use it as a server.
you could have installed the os from your dmg with the mini booted in target disk mode, too. the installers are in /System/Installation/Packages. you should be able to run them by double-clicking the OS installer or using the /usr/sbin/installer command from the command line.

  • Installing Leopard 10.5 on a new Mac Mini (2010 model)

Hi, I have just purchased the new look mac mini, which came with Snow Leopard.
I wish to also install Leopard (10.5) on this machine for software testing purposes, but when I insert and boot from my Leopard disk, the mac just hangs with a grey screen.
I assume that the new Mac requires newer drivers that are available on the Leopard disk.
Is there anyway to install Leopard on this Mac?

maybe this will help to understand why that is not a good idea: _*Don't install a version of Mac OS X earlier than that which came with your Mac*_.

  • Installing Leopard with discs from another Mac

I've a Mac mini, first generation, G4 processor, running Tiger. I've recently bought an iMac 24 inch which runs Leopard. Is it possible to install Leopard on the Mac mini using the discs I got with the iMac? Thanks!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
No, it is not. Disks that ship with Macs are hardware specific and will not install on different hardware. Also, it is a violation of the single user license agreement.
