Installing New Microsoft Office Over Old?

I bought Microsoft Office 2008 which I want to install on my external HD which is running Tiger. But on my old internal HD I was running Office 2001. I thought I'd have to re-install that Office onto my new HD but that didn't seem to work. When I open the alias of my old HD and try to open Word documents I get the warning that Microsoft can't open shared libraries and to either open virtual memory or re-install. What's weird is when I first opened a doc just now, it did open into Text Edit, although it had a W at the top like it was Word. But when I tried a second doc, then I got the warning again. Maybe because the 2001 Office is old is why it's not working properly? Or, if I install the new Office onto Tiger, will it over-ride the older one? Do I need to un-install the old Office? I don't want to do anything without asking, first. Thanks for any reply.

When you use Classic, Tiger starts up a pretend version of OS9 using the version of OS9 you have told it to use as Classic.
I have on my computer this set up:
Hard drive 1: OS9
Hard drive 2: Tiger, OS9
When I want to boot to OS9 I select the version of OS9 on drive 1. It has a lot of extras in it that won't help when using OS9 as Classic.
When I want to run an OS9 generation program inside Classic when booted from Tiger I have it set so Tiger uses the copy of OS9 on drive 2. This copy does not have plug-ins in it required by certain programs I use only when actually fully booted to OS9. Those programs would protest if I tried to use them from inside Classic because they could not find those components.
I don't know if you have a similar setup. If you did, it would explain why Office 2001 does not work in Tiger's Classic but does when booted to OS9 which is actually a different copy of OS9.
Since I also have the older Word documents on CDs, will they open into the newer Word after it's been installed and I insert the CDs? Or would I be able to just drag them from the OS 9 folder and onto the desktop and then into the new (Tiger) folder?
They should just work with the new version of Word wherever they are located. You don't need to move them. The only problem with having them on CDs is you won't be able to save changes.

    Hi Raghavendar,
Generally, when you install Lync 2013 in the computer with Office 2010, a Lync Meeting Add-in will be installed and enabled in Outlook 2010. Please follow these steps to check it:
    1. In Outlook, click the File tab, click Options, and then click
    Add-Ins.
    2. Please take one of the following actions:
If the add-in is in the Inactive Application Add-ins list, follow these steps:
    a. In the Manage drop-down list at the bottom of the dialog box, click
COM Add-ins, and then click Go.
    b. Click to select the check box next to the add-in, and then click OK.
The New Online Meeting button should now be available in
Calendar View, and the Online Meeting button should be available when you create a new calendar item.
If the add-in is in the Disabled Application add-ins list, follow these steps:
    a. In the Manage drop-down list at the bottom of the dialog box, click
Disabled Items, and then click Go.
    b. Select the add-in, and then click Enable.
    c. Restart Outlook, and then verify that the add-in is displayed in the
    Add-ins dialog box.
The New Online Meeting button should now be available in
Calendar View, and the Online Meeting button should now be available when you create a new calendar item.
    3. In Event Viewer, view the Application log to see whether an error was logged for Outlook, for Lync 2013, the Lync Meeting Add-in for Microsoft Office 2013.

  • Is it worth it spending $200 dlls in the new Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac?

I am trying to decide whether to upgrade my Mac to the new Microsoft Office 2008. Is it worth it? What are the differences between the new version and the old one?

There are more differences than would be practical to list here.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MicrosoftOffice_2008_forMac
might be a good place to start, as well as Microsoft's website for a full description of new features. ArsTechnica also has a review of it on their website somewhere too.
Is there any specific reason for upgrading? If not, then I would recommend sticking with 2004. I went out and got 2008 about a month ago (student licensing, so it only cost me $40) and I'm not at all impressed. It's slower than 2004, even on my quad-core Mac Pro. The overall responsiveness of the application is sluggish, especially in Powerpoint. Dragging textboxes and other elements around the page, for example, is incredibly laggy and feels imprecise. No to mention Microsoft broke Endnote compatibility in Word 2008 as well, so if the Cite While You Write feature is important to you, forget about it. I'm sticking with Office 2004 and iWork for now. I don't feel so bad since I only spent $40 on it; no way would I justify $200 unless I needed 2008 for a specific reason (ie work compatibility, etc)

how can i convert New Microsoft Office Word Document to adobe

    Hi itchigo,
You can use Microsoft Word's inbuilt feature of converting the doc to pdf by simply selecting Save As> 'pdf doc format' from the drop down.
    Please refer: http://office.microsoft.com/en-001/word-help/save-as-pdf-HA010354239.aspx#BM11
Adobe Reader does not have the capability of converting docs to pdf or vice versa. It can only be used to read pdf files.

  • Can i install my Microsoft office in apple store???

    hi guys
i have one of my friend
she purchase macbook air 13 inch and she has her own microsoft office cd
so she think she doesn't need the cd rom and she ask me if she can install the Microsoft office in apple store for free or not???
    thanks

That isn't necessary. If she bought the CD, the CD holder should have a product key on it. She can go to Microsoft's website and enter the product key here to download it: https://www2.downloadoffice2010.microsoft.com/macdl/registerkey.aspx?culture=en- US&ref=macdl.

  • 2009 macbook running slow after installing 2011 microsoft office, skype won't work either

Daughter just installed microsoft office 2011 ( her college sells it to students for $15.00 & you can use it for 4 years) on her 2 year old macbook.  Computer is now running very slow and she isn't able to skype either.  She got rid of her old microsoft program. Any clue what is going on?  Could she need more memory or something?  Maybe a trip to the genius bar over Thanksgiving break?  She installed it because she was unable to open many documents she was recieving from professors because she was running an old version of office.

    Karen...
Not enough free space on the startup disk can slow the system down.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure you have a minimum of 15% free disk space.
And the startup disk may need repairing.
Follow the instructions here >  Using Disk Utility to verify or repair disks

  • Can I do a "clean install" of Microsoft Office 2008 on Lion 10.7.4?

I've got a macbook pro (early 2011) and want to install Microsoft Office. I'd rather pay less and just get Office 2008 instead of 2011, but I want to make sure that I'll be able to install it without any problems. I haven't installed any versions of microsoft office.

    Kappy wrote:
Well, my old Office 2008 has a PPC-only installer. And, if you have read a lot of these similarly related questions you'll also see others who have had an installation issue because their installer requires Rosetta.
Now, my understanding from way back when is that some Office 2008 discs did indeed come with a PPC-only installer. Later on it was replaced with a UB installer. This came originally from MS as I seem to remember.
I'm geniunely surprised by that, I have ancient copies of 2008 (we used to install a lot of them) and they are all Universal, even Microsoft's technotes make no mention of a PPC installer (and these are the notes specific to Lion compatibility) so thanks for the info, now I will have to go through our collection of Office 2008 media and find one.
Copies of Office 2008 on sale now are unlikely to contain the PPC installer I would guess, and can be exchanged if they do.
But the OP should install 2011 (unless connecting to a 2003 Exchange Server which is not supported by Office 2011)

  • How do I activate a pre-installed Microsoft Office 2013 ?

    Microsoft Office Home and Business 2013 - en-us - Microsoft -
Brought a new all in one HP Envy touchsmart CTO desktop back in March, when trying to use any of the MS office home and business 2013 suites I get the following message " To Activate Office, enter the email address that is associated with your office subscription" or enter a product key instead" I purchase the MS office 2013 in the package deal with from HP, so it came preinstalled ..any help someone can give me will be greatly appreciate, I already contacted HP chat and she wasnt able to help me and referred me to this link "www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/chat.html but looks like they aren't available on the weekend. thanks!

If the real MS office is installed, then there should be some product materials in the packaging for the computer, namely a product sleeve or pamphlet that has a product key.  Other than that, it is possibly something that was done for you as part of the startup procedure and you did not realize what was actually happening.  Did you try inputting an email address?

  • New Microsoft Office???

    Hey guys,
i have a question... I wanna buy the microsoft office software to finally be able to view and write .doc and all this other stuff....
But I really dont know when to buy, cause microsoft will release its new "vista" and I heard that a new office version will come with it... Does that meen, that I can expect a new version for macs within the next year too???
    Thanks for answering
    -Marc

Office and Vista are separate products and will most likely be released at separate times. Waiting for one and expecting the other isn't practical although that's what Microsoft intended to do at one point.
Release dates for both products are always speculative until announced by Microsoft. Back in Feburary the release date for Office 2007 was expected to be October 2006. In June the Office release date was expected to be available to corporate customers by end of year and sold in stores early next year. Times can still slip.
As for Vista... If you've kept up on the press you know by now not to hold your breath.
If you need Office now I advise you to go ahead and get it. You'll always be able to upgrade it (except for Student & Teacher versions) and if Office 2007 is released within about 30 days of your purchase Microsoft may even upgrade you for the price of shipping. And keep in mind that brand new versions will have bugs. You can always rely on your "old" software to be more stable.
    Hope this helps! bill

  • Install newer OS version on old mac

    Hi,
I was wandering if it's possible to install the latest OS version available on an old iMac.
    Here's the specs:
Processor: 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory: 1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
The reason why I'm asking this, is that in order to use the iPad 2, I need a Mac OS X v10.5.8 or later, which I obviously don't have. So, in order to have the new gadget within few weeks, the only solution is to install a new OS on my old mac. If this is not possible, I'll have to use my money towards a new machine first and then the iPad.
    Any suggestion?
Thanks for your time and consideration to this matter.

    Hi,
You can upgrade to Leopard v10.5.8 on your iMac.
    Leopard requirements:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP517
You will need to purchase Leopard. Might be better prices elsewhere but start with Amazon as Leopard is no longer available from the Apple online store. I strongly recommend not purchasing from eBay.
Before you upgrade make sure there's enough free space on the iMac disk. Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. *Make sure you always have a minimum of 15% free disk space.*
Good idea to check out the iPad online manual here before purchasing.

    Hi,
As mentioned in ths article below, run for Office 365 products on to a Remote Desktop Session Host server is not supported. You can install Office products for Office 365 to a virtual desktop, but the virtual desktop must be assigned to a single user.

  • Reinstalled Install disc- New Microsoft Office serial number?

    1. I originally had Leopard and use the install disk to downgrade to the original version of leopard because of some problems I was having with an online computer game. When I used the install disk, the employee who upgraded my RAM and the operating system (from tiger to leopard- since they had no computers with preinstalled leopard) gave me a tiger install disk instead of the leopard. This cleared all of my Leopard applications. Is there anything I can do?
    2. Now that all this happened my Macbook is not allowing me to run the Windows that was previously installed onto my computer. What can I do? All of my windows serial numbers have been used already.

    1. Anything you can do about what? If you mean install Leopard then you will need to erase the drive and reinstall it from scratch. If you only have a Tiger installer then unless it's the special version of Tiger for an Intel Mac you're out of luck. If it is the Intel version then you can install Tiger unless your model doesn't support Tiiger.
    2. Serial numbers can be used again on fresh installations. You simply cannot have more than three installations concurrently if you have the Student Edition.
