Installing python-umdifftools

A bit of a noob question.
Numdifftools stopped working so I used yaourt to re-install it. It didn't work so I looked at the pkgbuild. It had python setup.py install rather than python2 setup.py install, to reflect the change since Python 3.0 has been installed. Obviously this was trivial to fix, but should this be changed in the pkgbuild or is python setup.py install preferable for most people. If it should be changed am I suppose to notify someone to change it?

    Python is not an app, it's an operating programme, like Flash or Java, you won't get an icon. By the way, why do you want Python ? I have it and it makes a novelty Beer programme fill screen then empty when tilted ! Only bothered with it because I have a mate who thought his fruit based product was the best thing since sliced bread, worry about Python if you find something you really want that requires it to work !

    errors occurred, no packages were upgraded.
    This happened also to the other 2, pygtk i installed with pacman -Sdf pygtk and it installed but the others gave me that error.

    it looks like a database problem, like it has no record of the package being installed previously and cannot write to it again after the update. Anything irregular with your permissions to /var/lib/pacman/local? I would try deleting the offending database entries in /var/lib/pacman/local/<pkgname> and reinstalling each again.

  • [SOLVED] Terminator, "you need to install python bindings for libvte"

    Upgrade terminator to 0.96-3, with new dependency to vte3.
    It suggested to remove vte, which is not needed any more. So I followed the suggestion.
    Then I can't open terminator! Got a error dialog "You need to install python bindings for libvte".
    Finally, I installed the vte package to fix it.

    Indeed, vte is still required.

  • [SOLVED] Cannot install python per instructions in Beginner's Guide.

    So, the overview:
    I just finished installing as per the Beginner's Guide and have logged in as root.
    I've enabled a couple mirrors in /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist
    Doing NOTHING ELSE I run the following command: "pacman -Sy" python and the result:
    python package not found, searching for group...
    error: 'python': not found in sync db
    After that I tried another suggestion I saw here on the forum: pacman -Sy and then pacman -Syy
    Nothing. I thought maybe I botched something on the install, so I did it again. Same result. I cannot get pacman to install python (or ruby) or anything.
    What gives?

    Yes. If no mirrors are uncommented a different error comes up. (no servers configured for repository)

  • Error when installing Python.

    I'm trying to install Python on my mac, but every time at the end of the install I get this error:
    "The following install step failed: run postflight script for Fix system Python."
    So... yeah. I've had my Mac for all of 5 days now, so keep the chat mundane please.

    I think there is a possibility that the installation has been almost completed and you can ignore the error message. Did you try using python?
    Where did you get the installer? If you are using "python-2.5.1-macosx.dmg" from http://www.python.org/download/, then you can exclude "Fix system Python" (not needed on Leopard) from the installation. Start the installer by double clicking "MacPython.mpkg", and push "Customize" button after you selected the volume into which you want to install. In the "Custom Install" window, just uncheck "Fix system Python".

    Thanks. Had a look at the PKGBUILD for python-setuptools, it is marked to replace python-distribute.
    Thing was, I was trying to install python-prettytable from AUR which has python-distribute as makedepends via the wrapper 'packer' and this was failing.
    Now tried the manual install for python-prettytable via makepkg -s and it was able to resolve the dependency correctly.
    So could be an issue with packer in resolving such dependencies.

  • Installing Python 3.1.1

    Looking for help on installing Python 3.1.1 on 10.5.x and 10.6.x. Has anyone done this successfully and can share the steps?
    Thanks !

    Well, sallied forth and got it to work ( I believe ):
    Got 3.1.1 from
    http://www.python.org/download/releases/3.1.1/
    untarred in ~/Downloads:
    tar xvf Python-3.1.1.tar
    Then within the Python-3.1.1 directory ran:
    $ ./configure --enable-framework MACOSXDEPLOYMENTTARGET=10.5 --with-universal-archs=all
    $ make
    $ make test
    $ sudo make frameworkinstall
    Finally, to fix the PATH, added this to ~/.profile
    export PATH=/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/3.1/bin:$PATH
    from command prompt
    $ python3.1
    launches new version ...
    Some modules don't seem to work..but the goal was to just get it running and this seemed to do it...
    This was on 10.5.8 BTW

    Normaly Python is already installed on your mac (if you have 10.3 or above)
    Open a Terminal window an type "python"
    if you get a text that looks like this, python is installed:

    I see you are on a mac - building these packages with the default install can be a major PIA. I recommend starting with a fresh python install instead of the system one just to make sure std packages don't get messed up. Also, make sure you have mac dev tools/env installed so you get the right gcc version.
