Installing SSD in a Macbook with partitioned drive.

I am planning on installing an SSD in my 15" non-retina display Macbook pro. When I first bought the mac I partitioned the hard drive so I could run windows in bootcamp and parallels. If I replace my old HDD with the new SSD and clone it will the SSD also become partitioned and able to boot in either OS?

Check this link to CopyCatX which may be able to duplicate the entire drive. It could be worth contacting them to see if it has the capability to clone Mac and Win simultaneously. Let us know if it can as others can benefit from this information.

Ideally, you should clone your HD as Bimmer 7 Series explains.
However, if your computer originally shipped with Lion or Mountain Lion, a clone is not necessary to merely reinstall OS X. OS X Internet Recovery will create a recovery partition, download the installer package, and install it on a completely empty SSD or HD.
Even if your computer shipped with Snow Leopard, it may be eligible to download a firmware update that creates the same ability: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4904

  • How to add a SSD to 2010 iMac with 1tb drive

How to add a SSD to 2010 iMac with 1tb drive? I have a mid-2010 iMac with 1tb HD and would like to either replace the HD with SSD -or- add 256 or 400gb SSD to maybe the Optical Drive and use it as the boot drive. Is this possible with Model 11,2? i thought i\I'd read it was, but recently am reading my system is too old - OWC have SSD drives for newer models not Model 11,1 -or- 11,2

Any SATA SSD will work, whatever you are reading is incorrect.
You have 2 choices with this model-install the SSD in place of the HDD or the Superdrive.
If you are installing in place of Superdrive you will need some form of SSD Caddy-these can be found on the cheap at places like eBay, also OWC sell one called the DataDoubler.
    Guide:https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Installing+iMac+Intel+21.5-Inch+EMC+2389+Dual+Hard+ Drive/8643
If installing in place of old HDD you will notice that the propietary Temperature Sensor will not fit on the new drive, you will need to replace this with a sensor such as this or this
You will also need a 3.5inch to 2.5inch drive adaptor such as this
    Guide: https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iMac+Intel+21.5-Inch+EMC+2389+Hard+Drive+Replacemen t/6284
If you still have doubts contact OWC as mentioned above, I would start deciding whether your Superdive is needed or if you want to swap out the HDD.
Hope this points you in the right direction

  • Installing Leopard on a Macbook with a Windows partition

I've heard that if your Macbook is partitioned with windows, you will have problems when you try and install the new Leopard operating system. Is this true? Can I just simply place a leopard install disc into my computer and get the new operating system without worrying about anything?

It's nonsense. I installed Leopard on my partitioned and Boot Camped drive with no issues or problems.

  • Install os x on macbook with windows 7 installed

Hallo. I have got macbook with only Windows 7 installed. How could I possibly get mac os x on it? Thank you

Yup, there have been a couple of users on these boards who have done just that. You start Boot Camp Assistant to create a drivers disk for Windows, and if necessary, remove the Boot Camp partition you just created. So now you have the necessary drivers for your Mac.
Boot to the Windows DVD and do a quick erase to NTFS of the only partition on the drive; your OS X partition. Install Windows and your drivers. The only working, bootable OS on your Mac is now Windows.
I asked one person why, and they said they never intended to use OS X, but wanted Apple's much more reliable hardware to run Windows on.

  • Want to install SSD and make it the main drive

Hello, I just purchased my Lenovo IdeaCenter H530 Desktop and straight away installed a GT640 video card.   Everything seems good and I'm waiting to install a SSD.   I would like to run windows 8.1 from the SSD as the primary drive, and use the 1TB HD as a storage drive for files etc.
How should I install the SSD, which BIOS settings should I change, and how can I get windows transferred from the 1TB HD to the SSD, and make sure that windows boots from the SSD?   Is there an online tutorial for this?  Or could someone talk me through this?  Thanks!

    hi jenny0101,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
The only concern here is transferring the Windows OS to the SSD drive and everything else remains as it is now.
You can Try Paragon Backup & Recovery 12 Home
    I can say
Clone the Drive to your SSD Replace the HDD with your SSD using the same connection and it should work.

  • Install Mac OS on MacBook but CD drive doesnt work

I have a black 13 in. MacBook (Late 2007) running 10.5.8 and I would like to update to the latest version of Mac OS but the CD drive on it doesn't work (I accidently dropped my MacBook and now CDs wont go inside the drive) I also have an 27 in. iMac (mid 2010) running the latest version of Mac OS. (I have all of the install discs that came with each computer) Is it possible to install the latest version of Mac OS on my MacBook using my iMacs CD drive? Or at least reinstall the Mac OS on my MacBook like if it were brand new?. If it is possible can anyone direct me to where the instructions are, or the discussion forum for a similar situation like this one?

It is not possible to install without a working DVD drive. You could use your iMac but only if your MB has a Firewire port. If so, then you can use Target Disk Mode.
    1. Follow the basic instructions for connecting the two via FW cable.
    2. Boot the MB into TDM.
    3. Boot the iMac from the Snow Leopard installer DVD.
    4. Use Disk Utility from the installer's Utilities menu to erase the hard drive on the MB.
    5. Quit DU. Install SL by selecting the MB's drive as the target.

  • Outputting to tape via MacBook with Lacie Drive?

So this may have been covered but I can't find it so here it goes: The MacBook has only 1 Firewire port. I'm looking for suggestions for outputting to tape when also using a Lacie Drive which occupies the port. Hooking the Lacie up via the USB won't be fast enough right? So this means figuring out an alternate way to lay off to tape from FCPHD. Does this mean rendering the sequence out as .mov file? If so, which codec is going to give it as close to the same resolution as if I was laying off directly from the FCPHD Print to video?

It depends on the camera npeovideo is using: Canon cameras seem not to like to be daisy chained with LaCie drives... even though mine (Canon MVX4i = Optura 600) works perfectly. But from the other posts in this forum I'm probably an exception.
So I suggest npeovideo first tries daisy chaining. If it works, OK.
If it doesn't work, the only solution I can think of is to copy the project media from the LaCie into the internal hard drive (and reconnect it), disconnect the LaCie drive and print to video to the camcorder, directly connected to the Macbook firewire port. Using USB connection for the external drive might lead to dropped frames and loss of quality.
As an alternative, in order to reduce the need for internal disk space, and in case npeovideo edited a short movie out of an originally long raw movie, he could: a. Export > Quicktime Movie, self contained, (not: Using QuickTime Conversion) to the internal disk drive, b. create a new FCE project where you import that movie into a new sequence, and c. without any further editing, just print to video that sequence (after disconnecting the LaCie drive as above).
I hope some of this may solve the problem.

  • ITunes and IPOd Music on MacBook with Crashed Drive

Have run into a situation. Have MacBook 1.83GHZ, was running OSX 10.4.11 that original 80GB Hard Disk totally crashed on 3 days ago. Apple store replaced hard drive (thank you), but was unable to remove ANY data. This included 1600 songs, and 3500 pictures in Itunes 7. So my libraries (not backed up) are gone. However, my IPOD 5th Gen has all the same pictures and songs on it.
All I want to do is to sync from my IPOD back to Itunes on the MacBook with the new hard drive and restore what I had before the hard disk crashed.
I see in Apple help there is discussion about moving Itunes libraries to a new computer, which requires some access to the old computer. this does not help....
    Any ideas/help are appreciated

Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use our iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod.
The transfer of content from sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve music files and playlists from your iPod. I use Senuti but have a look at the web pages and documentation for the others too, you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well. This is just a small selection of what's available, you can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:
Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    Comparison of iPod managers
    Senuti Mac Only
    PodView Mac Only
    PodWorks Mac Only
iPodDisk PPC Mac Only (experimental version available for Intel Macs)
TuneAid Mac only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
    iPodRip Mac & Windows
    YamiPod Mac & Windows
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac & Windows
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
There are various programs out there for recovering photos from an iPod, have a look at the ones below. If you search the internet you can find more. Just be aware that what you'll be recovering will be photos optimised for the iPod so they won't be the same quality as the original full resolution versions:
iPod Photo Liberator Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
Keith's iPod Photo Reader Mac only
If you have full resolution copies of the photos on the iPod have a look here: Apple Knowledge Base article - Use Disk Mode to copy photos from iPod
Keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • Unable to Install Flash Player in Macbook with 10.6.8

I have followed all the troubleshooting procedures on Adobe support including clean uninstall to no avail. During the installation it always hangs up at 95% but then "completes" the installation. It is a 2009 Macbook with OSX 10.6.8. I have Flash Player on an older iMac with 10.6.8 and it works fine. Help.

Download the installer by right clicking and selecting "Save as".
    http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/licensing/mac /install_flash_player_11_osx.dmg
When you mount the DMG and the window opens, right click the installer and select "Show Package Contents".
In the new window that opens, go to Contents/Resources and double click the Adobe Flash Player.pkg.
It should run all the way through.

  • Installed ssd on new macbook but getting a grey folder with a question mark?

Hi, I bought a new macbook pro, late 2011. Installed aftermarket SSD myself. Switched mac on and i get a question mark in a grey folder with a white background. I rang Apple and they said they mac cannot find the operating system.
    Any help?

You have to install OS X on the SSD in order to use it. Start with:
    Drive Preparation for Lion
    1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Once formatting is completed quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
The installation is done via the internet so you will need an active network connection which can be wired or wireless. The installation can take several hours.

  • How do I install mavericks on a macbook with out the app store?

Okay, so this has been very annoying lately. So, long story short, I had to erase my HDD on my Macbook Pro which erased my operating system, and I do not have an OS X install disk. Is there a way to get OS X Mavericks with out having to go to the app store? I'm running OS X 10.5.8 Darwin on a 2007 iMac. So, I do not have access to the App Store. I am only 16 and I don't have a credit card to spend the 20 dollars on upgrading the OS to 10.6.0 Snow Leopard. Is this possible to get Mavericks so I can put it on a USB and install it, or no? The Macbook Pro is just a regular Mid 2012 13 inch with 4gb RAM, an Intel 2.5 i5 Processor, and a 500gb hard drive. Please help, I do not want to have this amazing notebook hanging around that I can not use. Thanks.

If this is for a 2012 MBP, the you can do this:
Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer.
