Instance name = ORACLE_SID = db_name ?
I'm not sure whether the instance name is the same as the db_name as the ORACLE-SID ?
Could someone clarify this ? Thanks.
think the question is which is the difference between an instance an a database ?
Imagine the database is what you backup ... so the files and the instance is what manage your files ...
Nope I don't think so. OP asked
whether the instance name is the same as the db_name as the ORACLE-SID
I didn't understand the last part of your reply. How does instance manages the files of the db?

What is the maximum number of characters in an Oracle 10G Instance Name
All,
Can I know what is the maximum number of characters in an oracle 10g instance name under AIX? Is it 7 characters or 8 characters?
regards
SanthoshOne should really make the difference between db_name and instance_name: if instance_name default value is db_name it can be different
(even on a non RAC database).
For example with Oracle 10.2.0.4 you can create a database named DB78 with instance_name=DB12345678:
$ uname -a
Linux lx01.localdomain 2.6.18-92.el5 #1 SMP Fri May 23 22:17:30 EDT 2008 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
$ ps -fu oracle | grep smon
oracle 6353 1 0 20:30 ? 00:00:01 ora_smon_DB12345678
oracle 6412 5596 0 20:37 pts/1 00:00:00 grep smon
$ export ORACLE_SID=DB12345678

Which file decide instance name in RAC 10g ?
Which file decide instance name in RAC 10g ?
How does RAC know which instance should start from which machine?
Thanks.The spfile is NOT the correct answer, actually.
1. The instance name for any Oracle instance, whether in a RAC or not, is derived from the value for the ORACLE_SID parameter which is in force at the time the startup command is issued. If you were to:
export ORACLE_SID=SALES
sqlplus / as sysdba
startup...you would just have created an instance called SALES.
2. The spfile (or init.ora if you're not using an spfile) contains a parameter called INSTANCE_NAME. That defaults to whatever ORACLE_SID is set to as an environment variable when the instance is started, hence point 1 above. But you can force an instance to acquire a non-SID name by deliberately setting it to something different. That's unusual to do, though, except in a RAC context where you want to subvert the default load balancing mechanism.
2b. The spfile (or init.ora) also contains a parameter called DB_NAME -but that is the name of the database, not the name of the instance, and is therefore irrelevant for the purposes of working out how instances get their names,
3. Neither of the above answers has got anything to do with RAC knowing what instance runs on which machine. That is the job of the Oracle Cluster Registry file (OCR), for which you have to provide about 100MB of space on a shared hard drive during the RAC installation itself.
You populate that file by running DBCA to create your RAC instances (and DBCA then automatically updates the OCR to record the fact that it created instance X1 on Node A and X2 on Node B, and therefore that's what will happen in the future unless you change things).
Or you can update the OCR yourself by using the SRVCTL utility. You'd do something like: srvctl add instance -d DB1 -i X3 -n C (add an instance called X3 to run on Node C as part of database DB1).
A little more details about the OCR is available in Section 13 of this article, for example: http://www.dizwell.com/prod/node/26?page=0%2C5 -

Changing Instance Name - spfile
Hello guys,
i've got a little question about changing instance names and values.
For example i got the following spfile (only example values):
*.db_name=DB1
DA1.shared_pool=9000000
DA2.shared_pool=8000000
and so on...
So the db_name DB1 is valid for all instance identifiers.
But how can i specify manually with which instance name the oracle db server should start? (for exampe DA1 and DA2)
The standard spfile name can also not be used, because of oracle searches normally for $ORACLE_HOME/dbs/spfileSID.ora file?
And which value is preferred, if i have a value for all instances (*.shared_pool) and a value for the specfied instance (DA1.shared_pool)... which parameter is valid if both are specified in the spfile?
Thanks and regards
Stefanhi,
Every Instance having there own spfile<sid>.ora.hmm that sounds very strange to me. Because of the option with the identifier in front of the parameter (*= for every instance, DA1 = only for instance with name DA1).
I read about the advantage only having one spfile for more instances (for exampe RAC).
So maybe there is a possibility, to start an instance with the specified name (in my example DA1 or DA2).
I don't want to change the DB name... only the instance name so that i can easily start the same db with different parameters (=different instance name)..
Thanks

Two nodes ASM has same instance name
Hi,
I created a two nodes ASM grid , when the grid installation(11.2.0.1) finished it created the +ASM1 as the instance name for both my nodes.
I did setup the ORACLE_SID to +ASM1 and +ASM2 for the node1 and node2 respectively before the installation.
Whats wrong I am doing for the grid installation? Please suggest.
ThanksHi,
For installing the grid infrastructure for cluster, yes for sure you need a shareable disks, in case of failure of one node then your data (diskgroup) is accessible on the other node.
You can add a new "Oracle VM virtualBox" Machine that works like a SAN Server (iSCSI):
Step 1: On SAN Server VM.
- Add for example 6 virtual disks (2 disks for OCR & Voting, 2 disks for DATA and 2 disks for FRA if you want).
- Install tgtd package.
- Configure the tgtd
Step 2: Then, on both Nodes:
- Install the iSCSI initiator.
- Install Device-Mapper-Multipath
- Start up the multipathd
I had written an article how to set up an SAN Server and Device-mapper-multipath.
I hope this can help you.
Best regards -
Can the instance name of prod. database and standby database may be same
Hi all,
Actually I knew that while configuring Physical Standby
1> Database name should be same
2> Instance name should be different
But,today I saw a DR system where the database name and instance names are the same. So I came to know that it can be done.
I just wanted to know that what are the trade-offs of putting DB name and instance name same?There isn't a tradeoff. By default, the instance_name is the same as the db_name unless if specified differently in teh pfile. What matters is the service name connecting to the instance.

Confusing with the Global Database Name and Instance Name
Dear fellow DBA's and Experts,
Good Day.
We presently have an existing database registered (on V2 Exadata) with global database name as BIDEV.domainname.com. It has 4 instances viz., BIDEV1 and BIDEV2 which have the same service name as the instance name.
Last week, on our new X4-2 Exadata, we tried to create a fresh database. While doing so, we entered the details as below in the installer:
Global Database Name: BIDEV
SID Prefix: BIDEV
Service Name: BIDEV.
Then upon the successful installation of the database, when we query
1. (SELECT * FROM GLOBAL_NAME), it shows BIDEV as the global database name.
2.
SQL> sho parameter service
NAME TYPE VALUE
service_names string BIDEV1
3. Sho parameter name gives the below details:
SQL> sho parameter name;
NAME TYPE VALUE
cell_offloadgroup_name string
db_file_name_convert string
db_name string BIDEV
db_unique_name string BIDEV
global_names boolean FALSE
instance_name string BIDEV_1
lock_name_space string
log_file_name_convert string
processor_group_name string
service_names string BIDEV1
Curious to know why it created an instance name as BIDEV_1 instead as BIDEV1.
Had tried another attempt on our test environment with SID prefix as BIDEV1, then the instance was created with the name as BIDEV1_1.
Also, would like to know what happen if we give the Global Database Name as BIDEV.domainname.com for installing the same BIDEV database on a different server while the 1st server is still functional.
Appreciate if someone could throw some light on the above confusion. Any reference material or source to the clarify the doubt.
Warm Regards,
Vikram.Hi Vikram,
Your clustered database is not full RAC, it's RAC ONE node database. In RAC ONE node database, instance names are created in that format only (i.e.e dbname_1), I don't know if there is any way we can change it to dbname1. OR if you really want to change the instance name to dbname1 format, then you can convert RAC one node database to Full RAC, then remove instance and add another instance, I hope it would be added in dbname1 format. I have not tested it, test it on your test system first.
You can find the database type in the output you shared,
Type: RACOneNode

Generate a report from the grid to get all the 10g instance name and size
Hi Guru
Greetings foe the day
can you help me to Generate a report from the grid to get all the 10g instance name and size.
If its passible you would help me a ton
Thank youIf you can see in you query, you asking to view dba_segments for one instance and the other query is over the MGMT$DB_TABLESPACES view but NOT "WHERE" clouse is using, and if ypu have more once instance then than view sum all the tablespaces sizes.
How many instanced are registed in your grid control?

select target_name DB_NAME,host_name Host,sum(trunc(tablespace_used_size/1024/1024/1024,2)) size_GB
from MGMT$DB_TABLESPACES group by host_name,target_name order by target_name
it gives the size as 1,507,473.149 GB

Following is the procedure how i changed the DB and instance name
1Alter database abckup controlfile to trace;
2.Edit the trace file to create a new file
create a instance with diff SID(New sid)
startup nomount
edit the initora.file
changed the instance and db_name in Init.ora
edit the controlfile with resetlogs option and set dataabse name
alterdatabase open tresetlogs
shutdown backup
Is it correct?
looks correct to me
aything i missed out?edit the init.ora and then startup nomount and then execute create controlfile command and then open db.

Responsibility Name and Instance Name
Hi All,
Is there a way to know to which responsibility we are logged in to once we are logged in?
Also, is there a way to know the instance name we are logged in to? Working on too many instances and responsibilities and when ever i get confused, i am forced to relogin.
Is there a way where its/it could be displayed somewhere?
Thanks.I face this problem all the time and its quite frustrating to be clueless & lost. I wish Oracle could also add the functionality of switching responsibilities without actually logging out and logging in.
Anyway, I have created a custom folder from the below sql statement to display all the session information. I have then shared this folder with all the users/responsibilities.
select
sys_context('userenv', 'db_name') db_name,
sys_context('userenv', 'current_schema') current_schema,
sys_context('userenv', 'host') host,
sys_context('userenv', 'os_user') os_user,
sys_context('userenv', 'terminal') terminal,
sys_context('userenv', 'sessionid') sessionid,
sys_context('userenv', 'session_userid') session_userid,
sys_context('userenv', 'session_user') session_user,
sys_context('userenv', 'authentication_data') authentication_data,
sys_context('userenv', 'authentication_type') authentication_type,
sys_context('userenv', 'bg_job_id') bg_job_id,
sys_context('userenv', 'client_info') client_info,
sys_context('userenv', 'current_schemaid') current_schemaid,
sys_context('userenv', 'current_user') current_user,
sys_context('userenv', 'current_userid') current_userid,
sys_context('userenv', 'db_domain') db_domain,
sys_context('userenv', 'entryid') entryid,
sys_context('userenv', 'external_name') external_name,
sys_context('userenv', 'fg_job_id') fg_job_id,
sys_context('userenv', 'instance') instance,
sys_context('userenv', 'ip_address') ip_address,
sys_context('userenv', 'isdba') isdba,
sys_context('userenv', 'lang') lang,
sys_context('userenv', 'language') language,
sys_context('userenv', 'network_protocol') network_protocol,
sys_context('userenv', 'nls_calendar') nls_calendar,
sys_context('userenv', 'nls_currency') nls_currency,
sys_context('userenv', 'nls_date_format') nls_date_format,
sys_context('userenv', 'nls_date_language') nls_date_language,
sys_context('userenv', 'nls_sort') nls_sort,
sys_context('userenv', 'nls_territory') nls_territory,
sys_context('userenv', 'proxy_user') proxy_user,
sys_context('userenv', 'proxy_userid') proxy_userid
from dual;
Now it reminds me I should also add responsibility name to the above sql.
Hope this helps. -
Using a variable in an instance name
Hey all,
Simple question:
I'm trying to use a variable to call on different instance names:
var picCaller:uint=2;
material_mc.addChild(pic_""+picCaller+"");
The code in red is the issue in question. In this example, I'm trying to add a child called "pic_2", with the number two called from the variable "picCaller"
Any assistance is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!Just for context, here is what I'm trying to do:
I have jpegs in my library and I want to add them to the stage when they're needed, so just to add one image, here is the code I have:
var pic_1=new pic1(0,0);
var image_1:Bitmap=new Bitmap(pic_1);
material_mc.addChild(image_1);
I want to put the above into a loop so that I dont have to repeat those three lines for every image in my library like so:
var pic_1=new pic1(0,0);
var image_1:Bitmap=new Bitmap(pic_1);
var pic_2=new pic2(0,0);
var image_2:Bitmap=new Bitmap(pic_2);
var pic_3=new pic3(0,0);
var image_3:Bitmap=new Bitmap(pic_3);
var pic_4=new pic4(0,0);
var image_4:Bitmap=new Bitmap(pic_4);
var pic_5=new pic5(0,0);
var image_5:Bitmap=new Bitmap(pic_5);
var pic_6=new pic6(0,0);
var image_6:Bitmap=new Bitmap(pic_6);
var pic_7=new pic7(0,0);
var image_7:Bitmap=new Bitmap(pic_7);
the variable "picNum" is the total amount of images that in the library, each one exported as "pic1", "pic2", "pic3" respectively.
var picNum:uint=7;
var picCaller:uint=1;
var picMC:MovieClip = new MovieClip();
picMC=this["pic_"+picCaller];
for (var i:int = 1; i <= picNum; i=i+1)
var "pic_"+i = new image_i(0, 0);
var image:Bitmap = new Bitmap("pic_"+i);
Thanks so much for your help. -

The system cannot find the file specified
I have tried from so many forms. This is so frustrating. Thank for everyone/anyone who wants to help. So this is what happened: I had to uninstall my previous sqlserver 2012(which worked great) for some reason, and I uninstalled everything from that download.
Then I installed the trial edition of sql server 2012 (64 Bit) and It wouldn't connect to the database. (Error mentioned above.) My local DB is COWBOYS. (COWBOYS is also my computer name.) After this, I have tried downloading sqlexpress and sqlserver 64bit
many times and cannot connect to my local DB.
How do I connect to my Local DB?
Also, I think this might help: (When I run sqlserve.exe, which I was able to find in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\110\LocalDB\Binn, I get an error: Your SQL server installation is either corrupt or has been tampered with(Error getting
instance ID from name). Please uninstall then re-run setup to correct this problem.
I would happily re install it, if it wasn't my 20th time.
I don't have any remote connections, I don't use username/password, only window authentication. I work mostly on visual studio, but without able to store /retrieve data, I don't know how to survive.
May be the solution is very simple, but I am too frustrated.
Some of the things I have tried:
From a command prompt, enter one of the following commands:
net start "SQL Server Agent (MSSQLSERVER)" OR
net start "SQL Server Agent(instancename)"(for instance)
on my sql configuration, I cannot start anything because there is nothing there to start. I can post more details, if that would help. Also, some more details about the error:

Any one that can help me, I will be greatful. Thank you so much. p.s. please ask me anything if you have any questions.It sounds like there are a couple things going on here. First check if you have a successful install of SQL Server, then we'll figure out the connection issues.
Can you launch SQL Server Configuration Manager and check for SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) if default instance or SQL Server (other name) if you've configured your instance as a named instance. Once you find this, make sure the service is started.
If not started, try to start it and see if it throws an error. If you get an error, post the error message your hitting. If the service starts, you can then launch SSMS and try to connect. If you have a default instance, you can use the machine
name in the connection dialog. Ex: "COWBOYS" where Cowboys is the machine name. However, if you named the SQL Server instance during install, you'll need to connect using the machine\instance format. Ex: COWBOYS\Romo (where Romo
is the instance name you set during install).
You can also look at the summary.txt file in the SQL Server setup error logs to see what happened on the most recent install. Past install history is archived in the log folder if you need to dig those up to help troubleshoot, but the most
recent one may help get to the bottom of it if there is an issue with setup detecting a prior instance that needs to be repaired.
