Instant Client Easy Connect

I have seen plenty of examples of people connecting with
sqlplus hr/your_password@//mymachine.mydomain:port/MYDB
but is it possible to do
sqlplus hr@//mymachine.mydomain:port/MYDB
and get prompted for a password?
sqlplus -H suggests that the /password is optional but it seems to be required.

Here
http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/tech/oci/instantclient/htdocs/winsoft.html
you can find Instant Client 10.1 and 10.2 for Windows.
These can be used to access Oracle 8.1.7.4, but they do not include an OLE DB provider.
If you want to use OLE DB to access an Oracle 8 server, you'll have to install the regular client (10.2 optimally).

  • ORA-12514 error: Instant Client 11 connect to remote Oracle 8i

I encountered a problem that I have spent hours fixing that. Here is the problem:
I am trying to connect to a remote Oracle 8i server using Oracle 11 instant client: here is my connection string in PHP:
    *$conn = oci_connect('db_user', 'db_pass', "db_ip/db_service");*
db_ip is the ip of the server, such as "12.34.56.78". db_service is the service of server, such as "test".
The error shown is "*ORA-12514:* TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor"
I could use the same client to connect to another oracle 10g server. The php code is same, only change the db_user or db_pass or db_ip. db_service is not provided.
I dont use tnsnames.ora for either oracle *10g s*erver or oracle 8i server. I just use the simple IP of server. Does this matter?
Server using: Windows Server 2008 R2
    PHP: php 5.2.17
    Oracle Instant Client: 11_2
    Any ideas will be appreciated.

  • Instant Client for Win32 and ODBC Application

    Hi.
I just want to know how will Instant Client handle an ODBC Data Source in Windows 9X/2000/XP.
Will it be a new ODBC Driver?, Can developers like me ship that "driver" with the application so that the end user could just open the application and use it without any other installation?.
How many disk space will Instant Client need?, do we need to set up the Instant Client to connect to the source, as we need to do with the current client software, or will it be enough to set the Connection String?
Thank for your help, I am developping a little application for my company that need to access an Oracle Database and need to be installed for many users on Windows XP Desktop Machines.

I noticed your reply to this topic and I am
having the same problem with OLE DB or ODBC.
I posted the following on another message and
nobody has answered. There are also no examples
in the Oracle web site on how to connect to a
remote client using ADO. Any help will be
    appreciated, Tony.
I am trying to create an installation package
from Visual Basic (version 6.0) that will let
me connect to a remote Oracle database. Does
anyone know what needs to be installed on the
client machine? I created a standard package
and it does not work on the client.
My connection string is as follows:
    Dim adoCn As New ADODB.Connection
    adoCn.Provider = "OraOLEDB.Oracle"
    adoCn.ConnectionString = "Data Source=PSYTEST" _
    & ";User ID=SYSTEM" _
    & ";Password=Ciao" _
    & ";PLSQLRSet=1;" _
    & ";Remote Server=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx"
    adoCn.Open
The xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the IP address of the
server. The program works when I use it on
the local machine, but it does not work when
I create an installation package and I install
it on a remote client machine.

  • Instant Client Installation problems

I am trying to install the 10g Instant Client to connect to our Oracle database via ODBC in Windows. I have downloaded the Instant Client Basic and the ODBC packages and put them into one folder on my hdd, ran the odbc_install.bat and added the folder to my PATH Environment variable. But when I try to create a new ODBC data source, the TNS Service Names don't make any sense and look like characters not readily found on my keyboard!
Am I doing something wrong? Is there a walk through instruction manual available somewhere?
    Please help!!
    Many thanks

I'm not sure to be honest, but what I downloaded did not have a setup.exe.
Does what you're talking about allow you to connect to Oracle databases via ODBC? If so, is it downloadble from the Oracle site?

  • Instant client support for oracle rac ?

My questions is does instant client support rac ?
    example : tnsnames.ora
    RAC =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = DB1-VIP)(PORT = 1521))
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = DB2-VIP)(PORT = 1521))
    (LOAD_BALANCE = yes)
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVER = DEDICATED)
    (SERVICE_NAME = RAC)
    (FAILOVER_MODE =
    (TYPE = SELECT)
    (METHOD = BASIC)
    (RETRIES = 180)
    (DELAY = 5)
    )

If you are asking if Instant Client can connect to a RAC cluster, the answer is yes. There is no functional difference between a full client and Instant Client. I hope that helps!

  • Not able to connect VS Web Developer Express through instant client 10

I just spent 10 hours attempting to connect Web Developer Express 2010 to an Oracle 10g database. In the end the solution was beyond simple, but with the existing threads there is a lot of talking around the problem. I’m posting this in case it might help someone else.
Obtain the Oracle instant client software that will work for your database. You will only need the basic package.
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/features/instant-client/index-100365.html
Extract the contents to a temp location on your hard disk
Create a directory for the application – it could be anything, but here is what I used
    C:\instantclient
Copy the extracted files into the directory you just created.
Right click on my computer and choose properties
Under advanced and environment variables you will need to add the directory you created above to the system variables PATH. You will need to create a new system variable called TNS_ADMIN and put the same c:\instantclient path in it.
Create the file tnsnames.ora under the c:\instantclient directory and put your customized entry in it. Below is an example.
    tnsnams.ora file contents
    <Alias for this tnsnames entry> =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = <Your Oracle Server>)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVER = DEDICATED)
    (SERVICE_NAME = <Your database instance>)
It’s a good idea to restart your system after this installation.
In web developer express use the .NET Framework Data Provider for OLE DB.
Here is the key piece of information!!
Under server name you need to use the alias from the tnsnames.ora file entry. If you do not do this it will not pick up the SERVICE_NAME parm and will give you some goofy error like:
ORA-12514: TNS:listener could not resolve SERVICE_NAME given in connect descriptor
    or
ORA-12514: TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor

These days I very seldom use ODBC for Oracle - most recently it was simply to get Enterprise Architect to "talk" to Oracle. I never used it for my client applications (unlike in the fast distant past), so what I know about ODBC is seriously outdated.
Even so, a few comments. :-)
Have you tried creating a user DSN, in case a system DSN somehow works different environment wise?
The above error description sounds like the original TCP connection was successful (i.e. it is not a host unknown or not reachable error). Subsequent packets seem to fails.
To confirm, run the listener on namesrv1.xy.zz.com with logging enabled and have a look at the listener.log - does it show a connection being accepted/handled from your PC when you use the ODBC DSN?
Have you tried the Oracle ODBC drivers? When getting EA connected I had problems (also with Instant Client) and Microsoft ODBC driver for Oracle. Downloaded and installed the Oracle ODBC driver and it worked just fine first time around.
PS. You should raise this topic on the Instant Client Forum instead.

  • CR 2008 and ODBC connection using Oracle Instant Client driver?

    Two questions.
I'm creating CR 2008 report using an ODBC connection. The ODBC driver is the Oracle Instant Client (version 10.2, I think.)
When I define the connection, I see only a few tables. I do not see the Tables, Views, Qualifiers tree that I see with a normal Oracle Server connection.
Does anybody know why this happens? Is there a CR ODBC driver that works better?
Second question:  I have a .NET application that is pointing the report to another Oracle DB. In my db, table names are not unique -- each user has the same set of tables. I find that when the .net applciation sets the datasource, I get connected to the first table with a given name; I do not get the table scoped by the logon user.
In the .net application, how do I scope the table name to a particular user.
    Any info helps. Thanks.
    Tim

    Hi Tim,
Below are the replies to your questions:
Answer 1: Please try the below steps:
    - Make sure that in File->Options->Database Tab in the Data Explorer section the corresponding checkboxes are checked for tables, views, system tables, synonyms and stored procedures and the Table name LIKE and Owner LIKE boxes are blank.
    - Please try with OLEDB connection and check the results.
    - You can also refer to this SAP note no# 1215994, the link to which is given below:
    [https://websmp130.sap-ag.de/sap(bD1lbiZjPTAwMQ==)/bc/bsp/sno/ui_entry/entry.htm?param=69765F6D6F64653D3030312669765F7361706E6F7465735F6E756D6265723D3132313539393426]
Answer 2: If you are using RAS SDK only then you would be able to change table name. Please let us know if you are using RAS.
If you are using RAS with Java please post your query in the Java forum else if you are using Visual Studio/.NET then please post your question in .NET Forum.
    Please update with the results.

  • Instant Client Connection Problem - Excel 2007 to Oracle 10g

    Dear users,
I would some help to connect Excel to Oracle.
I am using Excel 2007 (32-bit) on Windows Vista Enterprise 64-bit. I want to connect to an Oracle 10g database through our local network using ODBC. I need to fetch some data once into an excel sheet.
There are no firewall issues or connection issues between my current machine , as I can connect from my machine, using SQL developer as a local client to the Oracle Database which is on another machine on the network.
I tried to make an ODBC connection but Oracle is not listed as a driver.
I beleive ODBC is the best way to do this, but please correct me if I am wrong.
It is an Oracle 10G database.
    I downloaded instantclient-basiclite-windows.x64-11.2.0.2.0.zip a
I also downloaded the extra ODBC components: *Instant Client Package - ODBC: Additional libraries for enabling ODBC applications.
I unzipped both in a folder called C:\instantclient_11_2
The system path included that. I checked after rebooting.
I placed my tnsnames.ora (which I copied from the server) in that folder.
I got ti from the server : D:\Oracle\Ora10gR2DB\network\admin\tnsnames.ora
I ran the exe "odbc_install" and It told me the ODBC was intalled successfully.
When I went the control panel, administrative tools, ODBC
    In the user dsn tab
I added a new entry. I chose the Oracle driver (previously it was not in the list)
    Used the following values
    Data Source name: OracleL
    Description 123
TNS Service NAme: I chose fro ma drop down menu our prod environment. (There are two entries with the production name, one in caps and the other in lowercase)
    Userid: my username
I tried Test the connection and got this:
    Unable to Connect
    SQlState=S1000
[Oracle][ODBC][Ora]ORA-12545: Connect failed because target host or object does not exist
    Any suggestions please.
    Thnaks in advance.
    A.
Thanks for all your help, in advance.

You probably should remove current ic packages and get the 32-bit ones instead.
    Start over.
When I went the control panel, administrative tools, ODBCOn Windows x64, to manage 32-bit ODBC DSNs/drivers one needs to run the tool from Windows\SysWoW64\odbcad32.exe.

When I ping the host I get reply.
Also I am able to connect to that same database thru perl( so I presume there is no problem with the database not avaiable or port not open etc), where additionally ORACLE_HOME and ORACLE_SID env variable are set to the path in the remote machine. The databse version is Oracle 9.2

Am I missing some set up.
Can anybody help please...I have been trying since last 3 days.
    Thanks

    Hi Laurenz,
Sorry to say...but it still does not connect(incorporated your suggestions), nor is the trace generated. sqlnet.log looks no different. As about any other oracle clients...I did not have any until yesterday evening when we installed the entire 10g oracle...client and database.
Anyways now too after having installed oracle 10g on D drive, no succes in connecting to remote databse.
    Two questions:
    1. Is XE client compatible with 10g database? As I am trying to connect to 9.2 version as mentioned in my initial query.
    2. When I ping the host I do get reply. BUT when I telnet i.e.
    telnet host port
....it says "could not open connection to the host, on port XXX: connect failed"
Does it mean there is a firewall at the remote end which is preventing the successfull connection? But then how do I connect thru' Perl with no extra info...
Any other suggestion please let me know...and also do you suggest I uninstall all oracle clients other than XE...or is there any way out ...having multiple clients?
Another query...hope I can use toad after having set up the XE client?
    Thanks in advance...

got message ORA-03134 when creating ODBC connection to database version 9.2. However, it was successful to connect to database versions 10g and up. Has anyone successfully connected to Oracle 9.2 by using the 10g instant client?

    Thanks.

I think this is nothing to do with ODBC, to clarify try to connect with sqlplus to same DB.
However, what is your exact Oracle client version?
Looks like there was a bug in 10g, and I think issue is fixed in patch to 10.1.0.3. Check @ 10g client vs 8i server (ORA-03134): news?

    Thanks
NicoleODBC sits on top of the Oracle client. (or any other native client of a given db product).
I don't think the ODBC drivers come with the instant client, though if you can locate a 3d party odbc driver for Oracle, that should work with the instant client.
Oracle ODBC drivers do come with the full client, but even there don't install by default - at least not up through 10g. In that case you have to select 'custom installation' (which can be done after a basic run-time installation) and select 'windows components'.

  • Error ORA-12154 trying to connect with instant client 11g / LDAP on Ubuntu

    Hello,
I have successfully installed instant client 11.2.0.2 and sqlplus on my Ubuntu 11.04 workstation. I am able to successfully connect to DB's defined in tnsnames.ora, but when the resolution is (or should be) by LDAP, I get error
ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified
Note: while it's fine for testing, it's not a viable option to setup all the DB's defined in the OID in tnsnames.ora - I need to use LDAP.
    My setup is as follows:
    Install folder: /opt/oracle/instantclient_11_2
    TNS_ADMIN=/opt/oracle/instantclient_11_2/
    sqlnet.ora
    NAMES.DIRECTORY_PATH=(TNSNAMES,LDAP)
I am certain that tnsnames.ora and ldap.ora are valid, as I can connect successfully on another machine with the full client installed using the same files.
I tried to setup tracing in sqlnet.ora as follows
    TRACE_LEVEL_CLIENT = SUPPORT
    TRACE_DIRECTORY_CLIENT = /tmp
    TRACE_FILE_CLIENT = sqlnet.trc
but not trace file gets generated in /tmp - am I doing something wrong ? (Note, I also tried to set DIAG_ADR_ENABLED=OFF as suggested by Laurenz Albe in Instant client don't work trace but that did not help)
    I checked DocID=359206.1 but I don't think that applies as I'm on 11g.
Hope someone can help. Thanks in advance !

Add the following line to sqlnet.ora in the directory to which TNS_ADMIN points:
