Integration - Windows Server 2003/2008R2: Creating a login script that attaches programs to a certain user group. Upgrading to Windows 7/8

We are currently running a windows server 2003 environment with a 2003 server being the DC. We have a couple of 2008 r2 servers that are member servers.
OK...
Our users are primarily operating off of windows xp clients/workstations in which they use RDP to connect to the newer member servers that are windows 2008. With their base profile in xp I am using roaming profiles via server 2003. I am looking to begin
upgrading all of the workstations to all-in-one windows7/8 boxes partially because of cosmetic reasons(#weird) and partially because we will eventually begin using the camera options that are in the all-in-one's.
Also..I must do this one at a time as we don't have the money to do a complete overhaul of all client workstations..If that was the case, I could just redo the network and make those members servers the DC and backup DC as well as add a virtual server
in which everyone can access those legacy programs that are still needed...
As you guys know windows 7/8 boxes will not work with server 2003 and roaming profiles. The reason we don't completely upgrade to 2008 r2 environment is because we are still holding on to a legacy program that requires server 2003 and these programs are
vital to our operation.
So..broken down even further...
A: User is part of a 'LocalAdmins' group that makes them automatically a local admin upon any system within our domain.
B: User  logs in to windows xp with credentials in which a tailored made per user roaming profile comes up from server 2003
C: User then logs into one of the two terminal servers via RDP with same credentials and accesses new primary application. To access the legacy applications, they merely minimize their RDP session to get back to the windows xp session.
Ultimately..
1. I'd like to begin replacing option B: with windows 7/8 all-in-ones and and have the RDP saved sessions, that talk to the 2008 member servers, as well as, a few vital ie shortcuts automatically come to all users that are apart of that "LocalAdmins
group period.
2. Setup 1 server 2003 box that runs that legacy program and allow everyone access via a Virtual Environment..
3. If they log into a windows xp box, or a windows 7/8 box, I want them to have access to the same icons.
I guess this is a lot to digest, but my question is, what script could I make that would essentially allow uniformity for both my xp workstations and newly added windows 7/8 boxes? What script could I create that would,I guess reside on server 2003, that
brings all the neccessary icons to the users that are apart of that "LocalAdmins" group despite having a windows xp, 7, or 8 workstation?

" I don't see what the issue is because a logon script will still be managed by Group Policy and will have to be applied using GP rules.  In the end you still have to write the script."
You basically contradicted the smug part of your rant and multiple answers with this statement!!! You just recognized that some sort of script would be necessary if I chose to use it via group policy.
But according to you..
"It is not and has never been done via a script."
Clearly it has a section per user for a "profile path" and a "logon SCRIPT". Which warrants my creation of this post since I have currentely implemented
roaming profiles. That is how I am manipulating what users can have on their desktop because of course, we have different users that have different needs. But out of all the users, there are programs that need to be laced and seen upon immediate login.I
will consult other people as this is only preliminary planning but about half of your statements are completely unwarranted and UNNECESSARY!
This statement also proves your additional inaccuracies...
"All of the profile things are handled by Windows and have nothing to do with scripts.  You define all of that in Group Policy."
That's just silly talk. I told you in my initial break down of my scenario in an entirety that I am using "tailored made per user roaming profiles" to control desktop environments not group policies in this case. But you just made an absolute statement in
saying "You define all of that in Group policy" which is completely wrong...
Do me a favor, please don't respond to this post anymore. I'd love to see if any other partner, staff or whatever mind responding. Thank you for your help anyway. I will use what is useful in your post and discard the rest.
Thanks

  • Can't access some clien'ts features after migration Windows Server 2003 - 2008R2

    Hi,
I have done migration of the domain controller from Windows Server 2003 to 2008R2. The old domain controller is set as a relay. After that, I have problems with the clients.
Now with the 2008R2, it is impossible to:
    -Explore targeted computer's disks.
    -All RPC features.
-The deployment by GPO is also impossible (Group Policy object did not apply because it failed with error code '0x80070015 The device is not ready).
All of these features works well on the relay. I also can't shutdown a computer from a pc logged as Administrator.
I've got the problem on the 3 sites I've migrate.
    Thanks.

    > The old domain controller is set as a relay.
Please explain "relay" further. I never heard this label in terms of

  • Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition 32 bits Service Pack 2 never finishes searching for updates and use 100% of CPU.

Hi everyone, I am having issues updating a clean Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition 32 bits Service Pack 2, so any help with be appreciated cause I've already tried all my cards for the past 5 days in this particular issue without success.
All I did so far is installing Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise with Service Pack 2, open IE to update, it keeps searching for updates and never stop, after 20mn to 30mn the process svchost.exe start using 100% of my CPU.
I already tried the following scenarios:
1-  Install IE8, install the update KB927891 and the Windows Update Agent 3.0 (I already had this one installed). Reboot and run windows update trough IE8 and the problem did not solved.
2- Install those 2 software "MicrosoftFixit.wu.MATSKB.Run" and "MicrosoftFixit50777", open IE to update, it still hangs and continues eating my CPU. This is the output of "MicrosoftFixit".
Windows Update error 0x8007000D(2014-01-06-T-06_06_34A) --> Not Fixed
Cryptographic service components are not registered (This service is actually running successfully) --> Not Fixed
3- I found the following script that would register some DLL, deleting the "SoftwareDistribution" and forcing windows update to solve the problem and nothing happened either.
    Link to script:

Herein is the root cause of your issue. A topic that's been discussed in several blogs, forums, and even in the media since September regards a known issue with attempting to patch IE6 RTM via Windows Update.
Aside from that particular issue... browsing the Internet with an unpatched instance of IE6, especially from a Windows Server system, is also asking for a world of hurt.
    Might I suggest the following:
Download the IE8 for Windows Server 2003 installer to a thumb drive.
Download the latest Cumulative Security Update for IE8 for Windows Server 2003 to a thumb drive.
Reinstall Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 2.
Upgrade to IE8 from the thumb drive installer and apply the
    Cumulative Security Update.
Now your machine is capable of safely browsing to Windows Update to install the rest of the updates (well, maybe, there's also all those other Security Updates from the past seven years that your machine still has vulnerabilites for -- even those seven
years of updates are going to take a Very Long Time to scan for, download, and install).
Why don't you have a WSUS server? -- noting, wryly, that you've posted in the *WSUS* forum.

  • Windows server 2003 Standard edition RAM Upgrade

We are using Windows server 2003 Standard 32 bit edition in our office With HP ProLiant DL580 Generation 5 hardware , We are trying to upgrade RAM to 8 GB from 4 GB but it is not taking, It is detecting 8 GB RAM while booting but not showing in my computer
    property.
Same thing we tried with Windows server 2003 Enterprise edition and it is working fine there.
Is there anyway to upgrade it ?

It is normal. You simply need to use a 64 bit OS.
You need to re-install the OS to be running a 64bit version as no in-place upgrade is supported.

  • MS14-044 for SQL Server 2008 Standard on Windows Server 2003?

MS14-044 was recently released and states that it applied to MS SQL Server 2008 SP3, yet the patches available for this security bulletin do not list Windows Server 2003 in the supported operating systems. Does MS14-044 not apply to SQL Server running
on Windows Server 2003? If it does apply, why isn't there an update available to run on Windows Server 2003?

    Hi Chasg76,
According to your description, the patches available for MS14-044 do not list Windows Server 2003 in the supported operating systems and you want to know whether MS14-044 applies to SQL Server running on Windows Server
    2003.
Based on my test, KB2977321 applies to SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 3 product and it does apply to SQL Server 2008 SP3 running on Windows Server 2003.
I installed SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 3 in Windows Server 2003 SP2 x86. After the service pack 3 installation completed, KB2977321 was offered in the Automatic Update.
Besides, you can manually install the update by downloading the update form the Download Center web site as well.
I also tried the manually installation and I downloaded the Security Update for SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 3 (KB2977321) from this web: Security Update for SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 3 (KB2977321) (https://technet.microsoft.com/library/security/MS14-044),
    it was installed successfully.
After installed security upgrade, I checked the file attributes and compared to this article: MS14-044: Description of the security update for SQL Server 2008 SP3 (GDR): August 12, 2014(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2977321/en-us).
    The result is the same.
According to my test, MS14-044 applies to SQL Server running on Windows Server 2003 even though Windows Server 2003 is not listed in the supported operating systems.

  • Issues with creating PDF's (Acrobat 8.1.6. and 9.1.3) in Windows Server 2003 (32 bit) and Windows XP (64bit)

We have a report package that generates customised reports
We generate the PDF's by simply "printing" to the Adobe PDF printer
In Windows XP Pro (32 Bit) the report creates the PDF perfectly
In Windows Server 2003 (32 Bit) or Windows Xp Pro (64 Bit) the PDF is created 90% perfect but some of text has slipped on the page.
Whilst we are looking into the report writer (Dev Express) I would like to rule out any Acrobat issues.
    With thanks
    Mark

I think it will work fine if you use the "Enterprise" authentication option.  It may have dependencies on 32 bit components.  So, that's why we must run IIS in 32 bit mode even though it's on a 64 bit OS.  That means CR supports 64 bit OS systems only if you bring down other components that CR uses to 32 bit levels.  I'm not sure if that is considered "full support".
We are trying to use the LDAP authentication option, but that tab is disabled.  Other tabs such as Active Directory and WinNT are disabled as well.  There maybe another component that we must bring down to 32 bit processing.
Is there a way to enable the LDAP authentication configuration tab?
    thanks

  • Need a Way to Create a Local Group Push via GPO on Windows Server 2003 DC

There is a new requirement to create a new local group on all machines and add all local and built-in administrators. To save time, I would like a GPO to create the new group, along with configuring its members. Any helpful information I found
is for Windows Server 2008 and up.
Does anyone know what I can do with my Windows Server 2003 DC?
    Thanks,

    > Does anyone know what I can do with my Windows Server 2003 DC?
Since DCs do not have local groups - what OS are your member servers and
clients running? If 2003/XP: Install KB943729
You need _one_ computer running Vista/2008 or higher to edit your GPO.

I am getting this error when trying to log on windows server 2003 remotely using smartcard. We have our own CA. We are able to successfully logon on windows server 2008 using same card.

    Hi,
Base on my research, Event 537 indicates that a logon attempt was made and rejected for some reason other than those covered by explicit audit records in this category.
Would you please provide more details?
Are there any related warnings and errors under Application Logs or System Logs?
By remotely login, do you mean logon via RDP?

  • ALUI + Windows server 2003 + WebLogic server + SSO via WIA

    Hello,
I'm trying to configurate SSO on ALUI in my environment.
    I've got two servers.
On server 1 is installed ALUI 6.5 on WebLogic server.
On server 2 is installed Active Directory.
Both servers are attached to one domain from active directory and both servers use Windows server 2003 as operation system.
My way of implementation SSO in this environment is folowing:
    1. I install IIS on server 2.
    2. I deploy WebLogic plug-in for IIS and configurate it to proxy. This is configurated on server 2.
    3. I check that this setup works by trying to connect to the portal via IIS.(true)
    4. I configure Windows Integrated Authentication for the /portal virtual directory.
    5. I install Identity Service for AD (server 2)
    6. I configure Authentication Source and synchronize my Users from AD. After users have been synchronised into the portal, I validated setup by trying to login on the portal as one of AD users.
    7. I change portal Authentication Source type to Synchronization only and select SSO as Authentication partner in portal administration.
    8. I modify Authentication source prefix, enable SSO, and select SSO provider (for WIA SSOVendor=5) in the portalconfig.xml file
    <setting name="DefaultAuthSourcePrefix">
    <value xsi:type="xsd:string">mydomain</value>
    </setting>
IE on a computer in the mydomain is configured to "Automatic logon with current name and password". Site points to the portal(server 1 ) via the proxy on the server 2 server is in the local intranet zone, but this configuration is on running.

If I do same configuration in environment where ALUI is runnig on IIS(without cofiguration proxy and weblogic plug in) than automatic login to portal is right.
Have you got any idea how to solve this?

Here are the steps to enable it (from what I remember)
    1. Log into the portal, update the Auth Source, select the "Synchronization" menu item on the left, change the option to 'Synchronization with Authentication Partner' and a new dropdown will appear, select the only option 'SSO Authentication Source'.
    2. portalconfig.xml - set the SSOVendor attribute to 5 (WIA) it's currently 0 and AllowAutoConnect flag to 1 on all webservers you'd like this to happen on.
    3. IIS Administrator - browse to the portal/sso virtual directory, right click the 'sso' folder and select 'Properties'. In the Directory Security tab click the 'Edit' button in the first section for "Administration and Access". Uncheck the "Allow Anonymous Access" and check the box for "Integrated Windows Authentication" in the second section of the page, on all your webservers
    4. Restart the portal on both servers.
There is a good deal of info on WIA on the archives from the Plumtree days

  • Windows server 2008 R2 x64 Authentication failure while try to access Windows server 2003 R2

    Hello,
I try to access Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard from Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 standard using integrated windows authentication . And because my application tries to read SQL server i'm getting and error that user is not trusted. Then I tried to open a
simple shared folder on  2003 and none of the users is able to do it. Both servers are part of common workgroup in the same IP range. Using domain is not an option. Migrating 2003 to 2008 is not an option either. The specific DB provider I have to use
supports only windows authentication, so creating user into SQL server is not an option too. I have tested many applications and cases which requires/uses windows authentication and non of the manage to connect.
Any help is very welcome because things are urgent!
    Authentication failure

That method in workgroup mode may be a problem.

  • Windows Server 2003 R2 Backup with Hyper-V in DPM

    Hello,
I am trying to backup multiple Windows Server 2003 R2 VMs on Hyper-V (Windows Server 2012 R2) with DPM.
When I try to this I get the following errors:
    On the Hyper-V Host:
    Source: VSS ID:8229
A VSS writer has rejected an event with error 0x800423f4, The writer experienced a non-transient error.  If the backup process is retried,
the error is likely to reoccur.
. Changes that the writer made to the writer components while handling the event will not be available to the requester. Check the event log for related events from the application hosting the VSS writer.

The Output of vssadmin list writers on the Hyper-V Host looks like this:

       Writer Instance Id: {0b5be050-91e2-41a6-9207-414f1291f975}
       State: [8] Failed
       Last error: Non-retryable error
In the Windows Server 2003 R2 VM there are no errors in the eventlog.
Only the information, that VSS is started and stopped after a while.
When I do a Backup with ntbackup of in the VM everything runs fine.
When I create a checkpoint with Hyper-V everything runs fine, too.
The integration services are up to date and get-vmintegrationservice -vmname VMName shows everything is enabled and OK.
On the Hyper-V host there are 13 VMs. 3 of them are running Windows Server 2003 R2 and 2 of them are showing this error. It seems to be no general problem with Windows Server 2003 R2 then.
I tried the backup on a different Hyper-V host with no success.
How can I narrow down the cause of this error?
    Thanks.
    greets,
    torsten

Thank you to everyone in this thread!
After digging through VSS and Hyper-V dead-ends, the solution above worked for me in a W2012 R2 environment.
I only had this problem trying to back up W2012 R2 Hyper-V VMs stored on a CSV, hosted on a W2012 R2 Host Cluster, backing up from a Host node.  I could back up from within the guests fine.  Both Windows Server Backup and DPM 2012 R2
gave VSS errors on the cluster hosts.
In fact Windows Server Backup complains with 80780189 it won't back up an application with files on a CSV, which is a common cluster configuration.  This is an example of another caveat in a minefield of MS caveats buried in fine print which often negates
configurations touted by MS Marketing, things which sound great on a sell sheet, but in practice are impractical or just not production-ready because of these restrictions.
Disabled Backup in Integration Services, performed an offline back up from DPM 2012 R2 (which did briefly affect serving the workloads on the VM), which succeeded, and then re-enabled Backup in Integration Services.  DPM then continued to
sync successfully after that for a day.  However, this problem returned after a period of heavy DPM backup activity.  So I redistributed backups through various Protection Groups to spread the DPM load over a longer period and this seems to
    have solved this problem.
In general I had lots of problems installing, configuring, and now operating DPM, so the experience has not been smooth, but most of the problems have now been solved.  I find you have to "baby" this product and not push it too hard,
    otherwise things start breaking.
    Thanks again everyone!

  • Hyper-V VM Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2 Network Problems

    Hi Guys,
I am trying to setup a new VM in my lab (I am using windows 8.1 in my host)  with Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2. I already installed the integration services in that VM, the network adapter is ok (Hyper-V network adapter). Well, everything it seems to be
ok, but my W2K3 Machine keeps getting 169.xxx ip. My host is wireless , the virtual switch is ok, since I have other 4 VM (W2K8, W2K8R2, W2012, W2012R2) working fine with that switch and having access to the internet, just this VM with W2K3 is not working.
Do you guys can help ?
    Thanks

Please check the properties of your NIC adapter in W2K3 if the Client for Microsoft Network is installed.
And also try to compare the network setting for other VMs NICs in Hyper-V to find the deference.
I would create new VM and install clean W2K3 for testing.

  • Zenworks DLU Account Creation on Windows Server 2003 TS

We are a Novell shop running novell netware 6.5sp5, Metaframe
Presentation Server v3.0 r03 running on a Windows server 2003 server with
the novell client 4.91sp2, Zenworks 6.5sp2 desktop management client and
a Citrix Web Interface 4.0 server providing access to the environment
(all servers located in our NY location). We have NDS alias accounts
setup in our NY container for outer office users who need to connect to
Citrix (so that their Citrix session does not try to connect to their
home office server, rather it will connect to the NY Novell server.
The problem is when an alias account tries to login for the first time,
Zenworks DLU does not create the local account on the Windows box.
However, If the user account is a true NDS user account in the NY
container (not an alias), the DLU account is created successfully.
I have read several documents saying that this scenario should work fine
and others that say that Zenworks does not support alias accounts.
Can anyone shed some light on this problem?
