Intel GMA950 and system RAM
I'm trying to make sense of the actual RAM used by the video system on my mini. There are some clues at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303407 - but I want to dig a bit deeper...
At the moment, on my mini - both vm_stat and the Activity Monitor reports 493M of RAM so I'm guessing only 19M is presently in use by the video card?
Does anyone know how to influence this?
What amounts are other people seeing?
With only one sample - it looks to me like the 80M is a conservative over estimate so that people don't get surprised if/when that much actually gets used.
It could be that this shared memory system is different from the typical PC setup.
For example, on my Compaq, I can select how much video memory I want to set aside from my system's main memory for video purposes.
I can choose: 32 MB, 64 MB, or 128 MB.
Since I have 1.5 GB of RAM in the Compaq, I set it to 128 MB.
That memory is constantly pulled-aside. It is never available for the rest of the system. So, as for as the system is concerned, I only have 1408 MB of RAM in my computer.
The other 128 MB is mapped directly to the video system.
I would expect that in Apple's design, they are allowing the memory to be used as needed. That might account for why you have only 19 MB missing now.
That would mean that you have the 16 MB overhead being used, plus the 4 MB of Video Memory.
Apple's design provides 64 MB of video memory plus 16 MB of overhead for the controller. That adds-up to the 80 MB that they publish.
So, as stated above, my best guess, is that your system only needs 4 MB of video memory for what it is doing at the moment. It may draw on more memory as it needs.
This is probably a better solution than always losing the full 80 MB of RAM.
Again, this is just guesswork though.
Hope my thoughts are of some help.

Intel 975x and E6600 overclocking?
I've attempted overclocking but I'm not sure if I'm doing it right.
E6600. 1GB RAM.
I've got my FSB @ 300 and set FSB & RAM at a 1:1 ratio. The RAM is now running at 533mhz as opposed to 667mhz.
My mobo is an Intel 975x and the RAM is DDR2 5300.
The only reason I'm asking is because I'm with stock cooling at 2.71Ghz and the test usually fails around 30 seconds with Orthos. So I'm stuck, Windows seems stable.
Anything you can guys can suggest?
Cheers.Oh, in that case I think it's:
2x512MB Memory Speed 667 PC5400 timings manually set to 5,5,5,15
EDIT: Are the voltages and speeds I'm using safe? The memory voltage option at '2.0' was yellow so I was just wondering, I'm quite skeptical.
I've been running Orthos for about 20 minutes now and it seems to be running fine, of course it's not conclusive but the results are better than before.
I'm also wondering, If I were to upgrade my RAM what would be the best option for my setup? Like what timings and what speed RAM should I be looking for? Can I fit any speed DDR2 into this board?
EDIT2: Running Orthos, the cores are at 56C-55C respectively, is that an ok temperature? -
I have a Macbook Pro late 2012 model with intel processor and 4G of RAM. I upgraded to Yosemite and now my system is so slow. I do not have a backup to revert to because of insufficient space. I have ordered a 1T external drive to do a backup now. What can I do to improve my system performance? Do I need to upgrade RAM or do I have to reinstall Mtn Lion?

What operating system can I upgrade my 2006 MacBook Pro 17" inch to if it has a 2.16Gh Intel dual core and 2G ram?
A Core Solo or Core Duo Mac can go to Mac OS X 10.6.8. A Core 2 Duo or better can go to Mac OS X 10.7.2.

HI, I HAVE A MacBook Pro 2.3GHz dual-core Intel i5 AND I WAN'T TO UPGRADE THE HARD DRIVE UP TO 750GB AND ALSO THE RAM MEMORY TO 8GB. WHAT SPECIFIC MODEL OF HARD DRIVE AND RAM MEMORY SHOULD I BUY??? THANKS
No need to type in all caps - we HEAR you!
I would take a look at the internal drives offered by both Crucial (click the link "Internal Hard Drives Now Available") and OWC. I would stay away from Western Digital drives as they seem to have problems on a number of Mac models.
You can also shop for RAM at Crucial and OWC - just select the System Scanner tab at the Crucial website to find out which memory is right for your machine.
Good luck,

Hello Guys
i want to install MacOSX to my pc
i heard something about that (like OSX86 project ?)
i have got Intel Core2 Quad processor and Gigabyte P35-DS3 and 3GB RAM and ATI Radeon HD4850 Sapphire graphics Card ?
please answer .......Teknus... Here's the issue. For starters, I understand software licensing issues may not be interpreted the same in all countries (although they are still applicable). I also understand that everyone is not familiar with what software licensing is. It is technically possible to install OS X on a PC (as you have seen on your friends computer). However, Apple has designed OS X to only work on Macs. In order to get OS X to work on a PC, it must be modified ("hacked"). As these forums are owned by Apple, we are not permitted to provide you with instructions on how to hack their OS.
Having said that, I have used OS X on PCs. It is not a pleasant experience at all. The experience is actually poor enough on a PC that I would not even use it... opting for Windows or Linux instead. You're simply sacrificing too much of the true OS X experience when you try to run it on standard PC hardware. If you want to try a different operating system, give Linux a try. There are many free versions out there and they will run on just about any PC. The forums are also very helpful. Linux is much more similar to OS X than Windows.
I understand that Macs are expensive and that you would like to use OS X on a PC. The simple fact is that using it on a PC would not be the same as using it on a Mac. -
Adobe CS4 OpenGL issues with 10.6.2 and Intel GMA950 video card
I just upgraded to Adobe CS4 and in PS I cannot enable OpenGL. I'm running 10.6.2 on a Macbook with the Intel GMA950 video card.
I was wondering if 10.6.2 does not have the relevant drivers for CS4 to recognize this chipset or that since the video card is integrated (as opposed to a stand alone with the newer Macbooks) that Intel has not update the drivers? It ***** since I cannot use some functions inside PS without OpenGL.Hello blue20 & welcome to discussions
1.) You can search these forums for the topic of:
Adobe CS4 GMA950
As an example, if you haven't already, in an effort to parse what's already been discussed.
2.) Have you looked at any of the Adobe forums:
http://forums.adobe.com/message/2356530
3.) How many fonts are you working with?
The general approach at this time is to ask if you've checked for any problematic fonts (all languages) with Apple's Font Book (look in the Applications folder). Find and remove all duplicates also.
Start there to be sure all fonts that are in play come out with a clean bill of health.
Don't hesisate to perform wholesale deletion of old and/or little used fonts - be skeptical of anything that has come from Office 2008, including those related to an Equation Editor installation.
By all means be sure any 3rd party apps AND plug-ins are Snow Leopard compatible.
An additional measure is to clear the existing font caches:
http://www.macworld.com/article/139383/2009/03/fontcacheclear.html
That said, 10.6.2 release notes have this to say about fonts:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3874
Fonts fixes provided for:
• an issue with font spacing
• an issue in which some Fonts are missing
• font duplication issues
• an issue with some PostScript Type 1 fonts not working properly
Good luck in any case. -
Core Image and Intel GMA950 graphics processor
Does the Intel GMA950 graphics processor support Core Image?
Mac Mini Mac OS X (10.4.4)And it's fast! (contrary to lots of the bad hype about integrated graphics sucking.) Intel and Apple did their homework on these minis.

I am upgrading from Tiger to SL in a MCBPro with 2 gb ram and an intel chip and I get the following notice: Installation failed.... THE INSTALLER COULD NOT COPY THE NCESSARY SUPPORT FILES. Any help is appreciated...
Yes. I've found that works best. Especially if the drive is external, since external connections are typically slower, and Spotlight loves to eat up space going back and forth. Time Machine will eat up as much space as it can, and typically needs drives at least twice the size of the original hard drive that is being backed up, if being backed up in full. So unfortunately there is a lot of empty space that is needed for smooth operation.

Hi, I am going to buy a new iMac desktop. I am going for the 3.4GHz Quad-Core Intel i7, 16 GB RAM and 2TB ATA Drive. I want to know whether I should go for the dual drives option i.e including the 256 GB SSD. I do a lot of 'heavy' media work.
by looking at the specs the laptop is better but if your not a gamer or graphics designer then you most likly wont notice a difference in the performance at all so with that said a few downsides
the processor is i5 the i7 processor is the better processor the graphics card has half the dedicated memory that the laptop has and the hdd compared to the solid state is not much of a difference unless you wanna move your computer all the time you wont need a solid state drive
but like i said before if your not a gamer or graphics designer on your computer you will not notice the difference most likely -
My 27' 2.4 GHz Intel Core i7, 12GB RAM iMac keeps restarting.
My I wonder if anyone on here could help me.
My 27' 2.4 GHz Intel Core i7, 12GB RAM iMac keeps restarting all the time. It's been happening for months now but has got worse and worse. It started when I was using programmes like adobe Pr & Ae but now it happens when I have only have safari or other small apps open.
What happens is the screen freezes, I can hear a clicking should and then the machine just restarts all of a sudden.
I get the message: 'Your computer was restarted because of a problem. Click report to see more detailed information and send a report to Apple' which I have done ever time for about 50+ times now in total. The 'problem details and system configuration' states the below:

I use my iMac daily for work and it happens from 4-10 times a day depending on what applications i'm using. More if I'm trying to render a video. It is really furstrating and keeps me from doing any work at all, I can't keep working like this but I have no choise. I really can't be without my computer for very long as I use it to do everything and I do not have another. Also I have all my files on the hard drive. I have bought a Seagate external HD to back up my files onto so I can make a genus bar appointment but everytime I run time machine or try to copy any of my files over to the external HD the machine restarts and disrupts the file transfer. So I can't even back up my files which are really important to me. I even had to retype this whole message becuase my imac restarted while I was fulling in this question.
What is worse is that I bought the extra warrenty (Apple Care) which is due to expire sometime in March 2014 I'm unsure of the date. Might have expired already I don't know. So I need to get this fixed ASAP.
Extra information on the machine:
iMac
27-inch, Mid 2011
Processor 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory 12 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2048 MB
Software OS X 10.9.2 (13C64)
Can anyone see from the information I have given about what could be wrong with my machine?
Any help or assistance would be much appriciated.
Thanks,
JamesHi. I am currently having the same issue on my 2011 27" 3.1 GHz i5 with 12 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
For the last couple of months I have been experiencing random restarts, power offs and so on. I have already had this escalated and had my machine taken into Apple to run a Hardware test. They redid the newest OSX version in store and ran the AHT for an hour and got no results. The Genius Bar were asked by Apple Canada to run an all night test. According to Apple they ran the test for 4 hours and got nothing. I was then told to take the machine home and run it with just the memory that was original in the machine. I stressed tested the video card with a benchmark tool called Heaven for 2 hours. 90C was the temp and no failure. I did a Terminal "Yes" loop for a couple of hours and no failure on the CPU. I ran the Apple Hardware Test for 11 minutes and this is the result.
I also have a video of what happened after I restarted the test after about a 5 minute cooldown period. 20 minutes into the test the Imac stalled and made 3 long beeps over and over again like an alarm with a long pause between. I took the memory out of the DIMM 0 & 1 slots and replaced them in the 2&3 slots rand the test and got nothing after 2 hours. I put the memory back in the original spot and ran it again and got no results. Apple contacted the "Genius" techs and they informed them that I had fixed the problem and everything should be good now. I was also told to go ahead and transfer back over my Time Machine Backup. Since this all happened I have had the Imac restart 2 times in the last almost 2 weeks and today got this error message

I would also like to add that The Second High Level tech I spoke to told me to use a program to take an image of what my computer was doing when the fresh install of Mavericks was installed and then again after the Time Machine restore. I sent both and have had no response back. The "Engineers of Apple" would be taking a look at those files. This is what I was told anyway's.
So I would like any advise because Apple hasn't been too helpful. I haven't heard anything back at all. Its been a little while. This seems that it could be an issue. I sat in the store speaking to a gentleman with a brand new iMac 27 inch that was having the same exact issues. I was told his was newer so they were not the same. The owner of the new iMac just rolled his eyes and laughed. James McConville seems to be having the same issue and I have read quite a few others before I saw this post from yesterday.

Testing 4x E5-4650s and 128GB RAM - tweaks for 32-core performance?
Howdy. I've got the following system:
4x E5-4650 eight core CPUs (32 cores/64 HTs total)
16x 8GB EEC RAM - 4 sticks per CPU
2x 512GB Samsung 840 Pro SSDs
5x 3TB Hitachi HDDs in RAID5
1x GTX 670 w/ 4GB RAM
Windows Server 2012
When I'm exporting 1080p from Premiere Pro CC with software encoding I'm getting really low CPU usage - around 4% usage, If I enable Mercury Engine it jumps to about 20%. Any tips or tricks?
*EDIT: I'm exporting from various sources and frame rates to 1080p H.264@50fps I'm happy to run some tests.Just finished PPBM7 and got the following:
Disk I/O Time = 244s
Premiere disk write rate is 152.02MB/s
H.264 Encoding = 126s
MPE gain = 293/97 = 3
The disk I/O time is strange as I get the following with CrystalDiskMark:
While doing the PPBM disk test this is the disk activity reported:
It seems to average out at about 500MB/s according to the resource monitor but only is shown as 152MB/s? It also has the OS on it so that might be an issue. Here are the ATTO Benchmarks, which seem pretty on the mark for the specs:
I think there are definitely major changes needed to get better performance out of this system. I'm just running a few tests now and it seems that Windows 2012 is pretty shocking compared to WinSvr 2008: Supermicro X9QR7-TF+/X9QRi-F+ vs Supermicro X9QR7-TF+/X9QRi-F+ - Geekbench Browser
Having a look at the benchmarks for the 11TB RAID5 shows some amazingly bad performance - 11MB sequential write, 200KB/s random 4K write. I get better write speeds on my USB stick. Either CrystalDiskMark is screwy or the raid setup is totally broken. It's setup using the onboard LSI 2208 controller, which I though was pretty decent. I'm guessing since my disk is 92% full that really messes with performance:
ATTO gives clearer picture, with transfer sizes below 32KB being crippled to under 1MB/s:
But of course when I copy a single 40GB file from the RAID0 SSDs to the RAID5 HDDs I get this, which I'm totally ok with:
Anyway, the major issues is really that the CPU is really underutilised and only uses about 30%. It's over 80% on one of the NUMA Cores but only 25% on the others. Looks like this:
I suspect that Premiere Pro is only detecting 32 of the threads, not 64. In the Multiprocessing preferences in After Effects it only shows up as have 32 logical processors, not 64. Thinking I'm having the same issues as this guy (same mobo and processor): AnandTech | Trials of an Intel Quad Processor System: 4x E5-4650L from SuperMicro
Any help would be appreciated. -
Steps after you replace the hard drive and add RAM
I like to tear things apart. I'm gonna put a bigger HD in my 12" G4 powerbook (160GB), and boosting the RAM. Got the physical stuff down. Not a computer operator type at all though. So when I fire this puppy back up, is there hard drive partitioning to do, do ya have to hold down the C key while it boots up. Anybody got a link that walks ya through the steps. Gonna do the same to my black macbook 2 GHz intel machine and lookin for an "after" link for that as well.
Thanks in advance,
JCWelcome to the Apple discussions.
You have a couple of choices. If you have an external hard drive with a firewire connection that has a bootable backup, hold the option key down when you boot up, it will show you that drive, choose it, and it will boot from it. Bring up disk utility, choose the new hard drive, erase it, giving it a name and choosing mac OS X extended (journaled). You can then highlight the drive name you just created, and under Partition check to ensure under options that it's the Apple partition map. If you only want one partition for the whole drive, you can then use a program like SuperDuper to copy the contents of your external hard drive backup to the new internal hard drive.
If you have one of the TechTool programs, you may want to run the disk analysis to ensure the new hard drive checks out.
If you don't have a firewire-based external backup, use your original OS X disk to boot, and when the menu bar comes up, choose disk utility, erase/partition the drive, then continue with the installation. Then download the combo version of the latest OS X update for your Tiger/Leopard/etc version (the combo version has all prior updates), repair disk permissions, install the combo update, and repair disk permissions again. Then do your software update (click on the blue apple on the menu bar) to pick up any other upgrades you need. The reason to install the combo update is sometimes software update flubs the install, and you don't need to deal with weird issues with the base OS X system.
