Intel xserve Server Admin

For some reason, even after installing the new server admin tools off the CD that came with the new intel xserve, I simply get a "waiting for response" in server monitor and the CPU graphs are dead in server admin.
Also, this isnt due to the server, cause when I ARD to the server itself and check out the server monitor, it does work... No firewall or anything either.

Quick Update:
A firmware update came up in my software update on my intel mini that would supposedly fix the issue... it didn't and my g5 tower still doesn't see anything either.

  • Server Monitor on Intel XServe Problem

    2 weeks ago - our new XServe Intel arrived. It is our 3rd, one G4 XServe running 10.3.1 sind 2003, one DualG5 XServe running 10.4.8 since 2005 - nonstop uptime.
    So both machines run well.
    With the Intel XServe I installed the new AdminTools like ServerMonitor on a Powerbook G4 and a old G4-466 - both running 10.4.8
    But now I have 2 Problems:
    First: With Intel XServes Server Monitor I can access the 10.3 Server, but I cant see the little icons and check things like van rpm or CPU temperature - it just shows nothing. Using the G5s 10.4 ServerMonitorversion it works.
    Second: I am unable to connect to the Intel XServe via Server Monitor - it always tells me "Auf Antwort warten" in English like "Waiting for response", not even with the G5 Softwareversion.
    I already checked the com.apple.hwmond.plist file and startet the hwmondSetup in the Terminal - nothing works.
    Even not, when I start the application on the XServe itself.
    ServerAdmin and the rest of bundled software is running well.
    Anybody knows?

  • Server Admin 10.5.6 will not install on any of my Xserves with 10.5.6

    I too have issues with Server Admin 10.5.6 update. It will not install on either of my Xserves. I have a G5 and Intel Xserve. Anyone else with this issue. I did install the update though on both of my client workstations.

    Then you probably also are not aware that the new server admin tools are part of the server update itself (compare the version numbers of /Applications/Server/ with an upgraded client's ditto and see that they're identical…)

  • Intel Xserve not contactable via Server Monitor

    I simply cannot get our new Intel Xserve to show up in Server Monitor. The app just sits there saying "waiting for a response". Our old G5 Xserve shows up, in 10.4 Server Admin and 10.5 Server admin, on either box. Apart from this, the server is functioning normally, no errors, Open Directory, Home Directories, Apache etc. But it's really annoying as in their current environment I need to keep an eye on the core temp etc. Can anyone suggest a way to find out what is wrong?

    Connect onto the Xserve box (on the console or ARD or such) and follow the instructions to set up the LOM port with a unique IP address, and ensure you're on the same LAN and subnet as the LOM port.
    [Here's the basic LOM configuration sequence|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2773].
    The initial configuration is (often) via Server Monitor invoked directly on the local box and connected directly to the local host.
    Use a unique IP for the LOM on each NIC it is active on.
    And remember to power-cycle (and unplug) the box when you make significant changes to the LOM.
    It's possible to do this via ipmitool if you don't have graphics console access to the box, but (for the sake of brevity) that access is being assumed here.

  • Intel Xserve with Leopard Server 10.5.5 won't let me in via login

    A power outage appears to have created some issues with my intel Xserve, running Leopard server 10.5.5
    The System identifier light was blinking, so I booted up from the Leopard disk and found out that my mirrored internal array needed to be rebuilt. No problem, 4 hours later, I repair permissions on the mirrored internal array, everything gets "repaired". Change bootup disk to the internal 10.5.5 mirrored array and reboot. System Identifier light stopped blinking, things were looking good.
    The login screen comes up and when I put in the admin username and password, the screen does the shake of the wrong login.
    What's weird is, on my laptop I can use Server Admin, Workgroup Manager, and the screen sharing for the server....with the admin username and password.
    So, I figure, perhaps the mirror rebuild requires me to reset the admin password. So, boot back up from the Leopard Server install DVD, run the password utility. and reset the main account password.
    I change the boot drive back to the internal mirror, same thing. I'm stuck. I can't get past the login screen on the actually server....or via the screen sharing...and Server Monitor appears to be stuck at 'waiting for response'. I can, again, use Server Admin and Workgroup Manager on my laptop and make changes to the X server software....but I can't log into the X serve.
    My webpage, wiki, etc....are all serving fine. But, I'd like to be able to figure out what I'm doing wrong...log back in and run super duper, etc.
    Help...please...

    Spent all day with apple support. They said it sounded like the LADP database was corrupted. They had me try to login as root, via an opendir account, etc. No luck.
    So, they suggested I do a fresh install of the Leopard server on an external drive. Did that. They then suggested I use my laptop and the workgroup manager app to log in to the xserver, export users, groups and computers....and to copy over the library/collaboration folder to the external "clean install" of Leopard server.
    Did that and followed the instructions to "relink" the metadata.plist files in each group, to the GUID to the groups in workgroup manager. First issue, they weren't different GUID strings.
    Well, that didn't work...kept getting file not found error. When trying to access the domain.com/groups/groupname...it should've asked for authentication. And let me into that wiki...but no, apache error page.
    So, they had me create a new "test" group....added a user. Start and stopped the web...etc. This didn't create a new wiki entry (when we replaced my custom index.html to the default index where groups/wikis/blogs populate automatically at the main). And, there's no new "test" folder in the library/collaboration files.
    They then said "well, it must be because you don't have reverse DNS configured right, that's why the new wikis won't set up". I've contacted dyndns.com...but I don't think that's the problem.
    So, I've rebooted my xserver to the internal drive. The wiki and blog is still there, still accessible the way I like....I still can't login to the xserver.
    So, I'm wondering, if anyone knows a way I can boot up my xserve in the target drive mode, hook up my laptop and replace / swap whatever admin files so that when I boot up my xserve, I can login again.
    There has to be a way to hard fix a hidden file? Replace a DB? Some awesome terminal command to get me in and fix the admin account / password....
    Or, does anyone know if the reverse DNS issue applecare cites is legit? Doesn't make sense how, the same public ip and domain name, that's worked for some time...suddenly doesn't???
    I'm hoping someone can help me.

  • G4 Mac OSX 10.4 server with RAID & sharepoints - Intel Xserve & RAID?

    Hey all,
    so we need to migrate our G4 Power Mac running Mac OSX 10.4 server with about 60 user accounts and a RAID with about 50 sharepoints to a brand new Intel Xserve with 10.4 server and a brand new RAID.
    My plan for the server part of things is to put the new server online with the old one still running, make the new one a replica of the old one, then take the old one offline and promote the new one to a master.
    But what to do about the sharepoints and several terabytes of data? Is there any way to do this except manually copying the data and re-creating all the sharepoints? That wouldn't be the complete end of the world as long as all the accounts/groups come across via the replication, but it'd be nice if there's a smart way to do this.

    Never tried the replica promote so I can't say that it will work. The way I migrated from 10.4 to new hardware 10.4 server was to set the new server up with exactly the same setup, DNS, IP and so on. This requires the old server be off the network for a bit. Once it was running I would have a backup of the LDAP/OD info made directly from the old server in Server Admin. Import this on the new server and all users and passwords are back in place. Now as for the share points and the data the best thing to do is to attach the old RAID to the new unit first. Hopefully you have a way to have both RAIDs connected at the same time to the new unit since that would be best.
    In the interest of downtime you could immediately add the share points back in to WGM pointing to the old RAID drives. This gives you the free time to migrated the data when you want to. Make sure you know the right settings for each protocols which you use for each share point (AFP, SMB, FTP, NFS).
    Now that your up and running you can move data by whatever means you see fit to the new RAID keeping in mind you want to keep permissions in-tacked. There are many clone or sync option out there and you don't need to move all the share points at once.
    The main reason I chose this method is it offers a fall back and no client reconfiguring. If something is not working on the new server you can simply plug the old RAID back to the old server and your up. Second is that if you try to run both server at the same time you would need to create a whole new identity for the new server (IP, DNS and so on). Migrate data via a Network (very slow) and reconfigure all clients to point at the new server. I've done this at least 10+ times at different locations and even before the easy 10.4 backup of LDAP/OD info. Making sure you had a clean LDAP was never so easy. All swap outs took less then an hour of down time with maybe 2 hour pre-swap setup. Data movement to a new RAID was not always the case but by using this method you can move data later which is the most time consuming process of the whole swap.

    Currently I have inherited the following setup - G5 Xserve running 10.4.10 Server which has the following services running = Kerio MailServer, AFP, DHCP, DNS, Firewall, NAT, OD, VPN and Windows. This Xserve is also connected to an Apple RAID via fibre channel for file sharing and also to a Tape multi-changer backup unit via scsi.
    I have just bought a new Intel Xserve and have installed 10.5 Server on it. I have this server as I would like to get iCal Server and Directory up and running and eventually share some of the G5 services. For iCal Server and Directory I assume ill need the 10.5 Server set up as Open Directory Master but my worry is I have that already on my G5 Xserve. If I was to migrate the 25 usernames from there to the 10.5 Server, would every user still be able to connect to the RAID (as the RAID is still physically connected to the G5 Xserve) for file sharing?
    I hope some one could advise or recommend a better way, let me know if you need me to try and clarify the question better!

  • 2 Intel Xserves, both running fast and both unable to connect to Server Mon

    Hey guys -
    Since this is happening to two identical machines, I'm wondering if I'm just not doing something right.
    I have two Xserves, both essentially functioning as metadata controllers for an Xsan volume. They don't do anything else but they both run fullblast at all times.
    When I initially set them up, I disabled LOM on them. However, I can't connect to either of them using the Server Monitor. This is being done locally through a belkin KVM switch, so it's nothing to do with firewall issues. They're both on two networks, a private one (for the Xsan metadata) and a public one that operates through proxy servers. Currently, neither of them can physically connect to the internet (owing to an error in the proxy settings I'm guessing), both other machines in the local network and see them and connect to them.
    They're both the same configuration, with 2GB of RAM, and operating at 10.4.8. They have dual power supplies and are running into two separate UPSs for power redundancy.
    I was wondering if updating to 10.4.10 would have an effect on them, or if there was a procedure to reset the PMU (or SMU or SMC or whatever they call it these days) on them.
    I've been searching these forums for similar issues, but most of them seem to be related to intel xserves which actually HAD LOM turned on, and these guys do not.
    If it isn't any of these issues, how would I go about thermally recalibrating both of them?

    well, I done fixed it.
    After I got LOM up and running (127.0.0.1 was the way to go), I was able to see that the CPU intake fans were all blowing at a strong 16K rpm. Not a good sign, even though there were no warning lights going off and everything was reported as green and normal. Since this SAN lived in a hushrack (two servers and two RAIDs all told), I first tried to isolate airflow out of the equation by removing the back enclosure and opening the front door. Even after the heat dissipated, it ran at top speed. I ran all software updates possible, installed the OS onto an empty hard drive, and still got the same thing. I yanked one of the systems out of the rack it was in and swapped the fibre card from slot 1 to slot 2. I started it back up before returning it to the rack and, goodness me, it topped off between 5K-6K. I was so happy with myself that I tossed it back into the rack, patched it all back in, and fired it up. Boom. After about a minute of being on, it rocketed upwards straight to 16K rpm.
    So now it was a matter of playing the isolation game. I pulled fibre cables, I tested the power cables in both the UPS and straight into the wall, I pulled the KVM switch out and just stood by listening for any changes.
    It turned out to be two bad ethernet cables, of all things. I'd plug the cable in and the fans would start their best jet engine impression. The primary metadata controller had a bad metadata cable, and the open directory master had a bad public ethernet cable.

  • Mac OS X Server 10.6.8 on Xserve 2009 - Admin Account Won't Login

    I installed the Lightspeed Server demo on my server - other accounts login, and I can use the admin credentials to access the server (Server Admin, AFP, etc), but auto login does not work, and the login window shakes when I try to login to that account on the server. Any suggestions?

    First off I would check the console and see what it says when you try to log in with the admin account. It will give a message saying what the issue is.
    Also is this a local admin or a network admin account?

  • Remote Server Admin not working from outside of network for 1 server

    Our company recently changed ISPs and I had to change our two 10.4 server's IP addresses. We have a mail server (intel xserve) and a file/web server (quicksilver g4). Both servers have two network cards in them. The problem is two-fold:
    1- I can successfully manage the Xserve machine locally on our network and from my home. However, I can only manage the Quicksilver g4 server locally. Any kind of external access is not even acknowledged.
    2- I'm not sure if I missed any steps when changing IP addresses for these server-based computers. Also, I'm not sure if I correctly set our dns names to the correct IP address.
    For some background, this is the exact IP update process I used for each server:
    Quicksilver G4 (file/web server) - Installed network card #2 and configured it with the new Public IP in the "System Preferences/Network" panel. In Server Admin I set our website to use the new public IP address. (network card #2 has no firewall device in between it and the internet.)
    Then, I configured the default network card #1 to a static, yet private IP address that's behind our DLink firewall device with the rest of our network.
    Intel Xserve (e-mail server) - Network card #1 was the only one setup before our network change. It had a static, public IP address. When we changed ISPs, I configured network card #2 to the new static, public IP address supplied to us by the new ISP in the "System Preferences/Network" panel. This new IP address is where all email traffic currently gets pointed to. (All mail is successfully sent and delivered.) Until our former ISP gets shutdown, I still have network card #1 configured to the older static public IP address. After the old ISP is shut off, I plan on changing network card #1 to a static, private address.
    Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

    What should I check in AD?  I am by no means an expert with AD.
    Yes, I am using the same client OS.
    I am talking about RDP over the internet, like from home to the office.  We have a static IP assigned to the router from ISP.  A static internal IP assigned to the server on the LAN.  And the router port forwards 3389 to the assigned IP. 
    It was working fine before we reinstalled Server 2012.  These are the steps I took when reinstalling:
    1. format drive and install OS
    2. rename the server
    3. install SQL server
    4. Install TFS and SharePoint
    5. Add Active Directory role and promote to Domain Controller
    6. Add domain users
    7. Enable remote access on the server and add users to remote access list

  • Server Admin not connecting to Leopard Server when accessing via VPN

    Hi everyone,
    Recently, as the title suggests, Server Admin (or Server Preferences, for that matter) would not connect to my remote server via VPN. I'm quite sure that the server is working nicely, as the users (both of them lovely young ladies with considerable charms, which makes on-site support quite interesting, if distracting) didn't call me to complain, and I can login via SSH with no problems.
    The server is a Mac Mini, connected to an Airport Extreme (gigabit N), which in turn connects to our ADSL modem, if that helps any.
    Now, I did tinker around a bit with the settings before this happened, so I think it's probably my fault (well, I started my "career" of administering this server a week ago, what do you expect), so I suppose I may have inadvertently limited access to a service required for Server Admin and Server Preferences to function.
    If anyone could tell me which services are absolutely necessary for Server Admin to function, or at least where to start looking, I'd be immensely grateful. I didn't yet go on site to try and wrestle the whole thing from there, as the travel costs are non-trivial, so I'd rather do it remotely, if at all possible.

    This is exactly the difficulty I am having with a 10.5.4 Intel xserve. I have established a VPN connection that connects me to my business LAN, and I know it has carried out the connection because there are a number of things I can access properly that are not available on the public internet. For instance, my LOM ports are restricted to my business LAN, and when I connect to the server via VPN I can access teh LOM ports and using server monitor. However, when I try to use Server Admin, nothing works. It won't connect. I too am confused. All traffic to the xserve is allowed via the business LAN. I thought all traffic was supposed to be routed to the VPN server when connected via a VPN. If this is the case, shouldn't Server Admin work? When I go on site and connect my computer directly to the business LAN, I have no difficulty using Server Admin.

  • Server Admin Problem - File Sharing fails to load

    We recently switched over from a 10.4 server to an Intel Quad Core Xserve running 10.5.8. Things seemed to be working for about a week but now The File Sharing part of Server Admin fails to load. After spinning for a few minutes I get a kNetworkError on the File Sharing Service.
    I'm not totally through setting up all the share points so this is causing quite a problem. Otherwise the Sharepoints that are set up are working properly. The first time this happened a server restart cleared the problem. This time nothing seems to help.
    Anyone have a cure for this?

    The problem seems to be getting worse. Once the error occurs some of the other services are not available through SA either. Anybody have any suggestions, or is it a reformat and reinstall situation?

  • Server Admin won't let me view Share Points

    I had a server crash while editing a user in Workgroup Manager that forced a restart. Since then Workgroup Manager works fine, but I cannot see the Share Points in Server Admin. I select File Sharing then Share Points, and just get a spinning indicator on the lower right. I can browse the volumes, but clicking on a user's folder does nothing. The Share/Unshare button never becomes active and I can't view the permissions. Other functions of the Server Admin seem to be OK, except the Web settings take forever to show up. This happens whether I run Server Admin locally or remotely.
    I get this from the Console when I launch Server Admin but it makes no sense:

    10.5.1 on dual-core intel XServe 4GB RAM

    Use the inspector in work group manager to delete /config/sharepoints.
    You will need to be in the local directory in work group manager and you will have to reshare all shares but no data will be removed. You should probably reboot after deleting the directory. This would replace the old way of doing it in the past with netinfo manager since we don't have netinfo anymore.

    I have an Intel XServe with OSX Server 10.4.10.
    From one day do another server admin don't connect to the server locally and remotely. The workgroup admin shows not the sharing button. The other services works correct. (FileService, NetBoot, ping etc ...). In the CrashReporter I've only find a crash from dashboardadvisoryd. I don't want restart the server.
    I there an other solution?

  • Server Admin is no longer showing the IMAP connections

    Hello,
    Did someone get this issue ? On a new Xserve Intel, I installed the updates for amavisd and spamassassin (thanks pterobyte website . All was working correctly, but I noticed that now I've 0 connections in my Server Admin "Connections" monitor. But in the overview I have the correct number of current sessions,...
    I noticed too, that if I go the webmail and I log in, the status is correct in "Connection"'s Server Admin.
    An idea what ?

    I would think the problem was there before or you installed something else as well.
    spamassassin and amavisd are unrelated to Cyrus (IMAP) or Server Admin.
    Also, a webmail connection is an IMAP connection like any other. If webmail shows, other IMAP client's connections should show as well.
    Check mailaccess.log for clues.
    Issuing:
    ps -U cyrusimap
    will list all connections
