Interesting vibrating sound from my DVD drive when it spins up real high

I just go myself a Mac Pro, fantastique performance and I have need even been able to put my ram upgrades in it yet. One strange thing: when the disc drive spins up high, it cause two mysterious metal pieces to click against one another inside the machine. I imagine its just a strange contact of metal & I should just remove the drive and reset it, but I would like to make sure it is not a sign of some more serious problem??
thanks

Take it into an authorized Apple service center. Some noises are normal, others are not, be sure the people looking at it have had sufficient time in a quiet room to hear what you are hearing.

  • Weird tone sound from CD/DVD drive

Sometimes I hear a weird tone coming from my CD/DVD drive. It is a short tone that almost sounds like a warning tone. It does this when the drive is empty and it doesn't sound like any of the sound samples on the apple site. I have updated my firmware and recently I've had to do several force quits. Could this sound be related to that? I can still import CDs and play them in iTunes. I'm just concerned that this sound means the drive will stop working soon.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
My optical drive sometimes does that after a while. I don't know how to explain it, but it may be since the optical drive is not in use, it resets itself or wakes it up again. I'm not sure if this is correct.
But if you suspect it failing or you are still concerned, by all means contact Apple and see what they say.

  • Excessive vibration/humming sound from the DVD drive

I just installed the new iLife 06 on my iMac (latest 17" with iSight built in). The disc made an excessive humming/vibrating noise. It was not visibly warped and other disks don't seem to cause this. Is it possible that it is just the way this particular disc is playing in the drive?

This may sound like I am reaching, but the label printed on the iLife disk has a heavier image on one half, and little to nothing (just a white background) on the other. The printing process builds the ink up heavily on the surface of the disk (you can actually see it raised up). This may throw the balance off just enough to cause the vibration, especially if the slot loads drives are especially sensitive to this. Thanks for your input, Eric

  • Imac 27" brief mechanical ejection sound from dvd drive when booting up

    Hey guys,
Had a quick question. I'm on my third 27" stock 3.06Ghz imac that was replaced yesterday. The good news is that so far it doesn't seem to have any of the problems of my previous two 27" imac's.
There is one thing though. A couple of seconds after pressing the power button to bootup there is a brief mechanical sound from the dvd drive like a quick ejecting sound even though there is no cd in the drive. My first 27" imac dvd drive made the sound but the second imac 27" Imac I had didn't. Is this sound normal? Would be curious to know why two out of the three 27" Imac's I had make that noise.
System profiler says my dvd drive is a:
    OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5680H
Would be nice to hear from other Imac 27" owners to see if they have this sound. Peace of mind I guess. Thanks in advance!

    Roger, et al,
    Thanks for the prompt responses.
I ran Software Update, but I was already up to date, so there was nothing new to install.
The drive seems to be working fine. I used it to load lots of programs, made some big iDVD videos, and made a DVD of some Quicktime movie files. I can live with this startup sound, but I asked the Apple tech about it and she's the one who flagged it as a more serious problem. So unless someone can steer me in the direction of a home cure, I guess I'll take the young 'puter to the doctor.

    OK. If you believe that.
When the disk is starting to die it can be bad for a moment and then be good for a while. If there was no problem while you were checking it of course it shows up good.
I tell you those are the signs of a disk that is about to die.

  • Take Sound from a DVD

I was wondering how I could take the sound from a DVD and turn it into an MP3 file. Any thoughts?

    With MTR 2.6.6:
Change MTR to Title Only (if you want the entire title to be a single audio file) or Title - Chapter (if you want one chapter per audio file), select the "D" button, then hit the "Streams" button. In the stream selection drawer, select only the AC3 track you want (or PCM if that's all there is). Then, extract the title or chapters you want. In the current version of MTR, you'll need to extract one chapter at a time if you want them to be separate, but in version 3.0, there is a MUCH better interface for chapter selection.
With MTR 3.0:Need To Donate To Get
Rip the DVD with MTR 3.0 in Title - Chapter mode, with 'demux streams' enabled, only audio tracks enabled (ac3, dts, and pcm, not m2v or subtitles), and 'merge chapters' disabled. This will output the audio from the selected chapters of the DVD, typically as AC3 files.
Once you have the AC3 or PCM files extracted, you'll need to convert them to a usable format. For AC3, get the freeware app mAC3Dec to convert them to MP3 or AAC. For PCM, get PCM2AIFF, or AIFF from PCM and convert them to AIFF format, which you can import into iTunes and convert to MP3.

  • Compaq M2000Z - installing XP from CD/DVD Drive

My daughters M2000Z stopped working after a reboot last evening.  It seeemed to be having some USB issues before this problem.  So I rebooted it and it would not come up, even in Safe Mode.  Hard Drive starts and have booted it from the CD Drive with some DOS-Like OS's and I'm able to run a chkdsk on the hard drive.
However, when I try to use a copy of XP Pro I have and boot from the CD the system starts and goes through all the processes of setting up.  However it stops at the "Setup is starting Windows".    I've done a lot of searching on the net and it seems to this has something to do with Windows not loading or recognizing the right drivers or there being a bios problem.  Whichever it is, given that I can't get the system to load I have no way to update the bios or drivers.
Should I just order the reimage CD's and go from there?  1) Are there other alternatives  2) Will the reimage disks work?
    Thanks.

  • Ibook g3 M2453 boot from external DVD drive

    Hi, I'm Simon from Germany.
I have an iBook M2453 Mac OS X and a lot of dvds.
But the iBook has no DVD drive. So I bought an external DVD drive. But no matter what I do during boot (press the C key or alt)
I can not boot from external DVD drive.
    Please help me
    Thank you.
    Simon.
PS: I have translated the text using Google translate

    Hi Simon,
the iBook is able to boot from USB, but this is not expected behaviour and not supported by Apple.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA20554
There are some external enclosures that do the trick.
But only when you press ALT after Power on. (Select a startup volume via the Startup Manager)
External enclosures with Prolific PL-3507 chipset (Firewire/USB Combo)
You will find them on Ebay Germany
    I have a Delock IDE>USB 2.0 enclosure for 2,5" HDs
    http://www.delock.com/produkte/gruppen/Geh%C3%A4use/Delock_25_external_enclosure _USB20_42365.html?setLanguage=EN
    that works also.
    Hallo Simon,

  • How do I import video from my dvd drive?

I made a video in an older version of iMovie sometime ago. I would now like to import that video again into iMovie to update it. I cannot figure out how to add the clips to my events from the DVD drive. I can't believe there is not a simple way to do this, although I may be too simple to figure it out!
    Jerry

You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.

My mac desktop will not provide sound from internal speakers.  When I go to audio devices window it only shows airplay.  How can I get internal speakers back.

There are many possible causes for this issue. Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Some may not apply to your model. Back up all data before making any changes.
    1. Start with the steps recommended in this support article. Don't skip any of the steps. It's the starting point for further efforts to solve the problem.
    2. Run Software Update and make sure you have a fully up-to-date installation of OS X.
    3. If you've installed an application called "Memory Clean" or any other third-party software that is supposed to "clean" or "purge" memory automatically, remove it according to the developer's instructions and restart. You should do that even if the software is not causing the problem, because it's useless.
    4. Other third-party software that has been reported to interfere with sound output includes "Boom" and "Samsung Kies." If applicable, uninstall according to the developer's instructions (not by dragging something to the Trash.)
    5. If an AirPlay device is selected for sound output from iTunes (or from other applications via third-party software such as "Airfoil"), deselect it.
    6. Launch the application "Audio MIDI Setup" by entering the first few letters of its name in a Spotlight search and selecting it in the results (it should be at the top.) Select Built-in Output from the list on the left. If the Mute boxes are checked, uncheck them.
    7. If a red light is visible in the audio-out port when sound should be playing, the internal switch is stuck in the position for digital output. You may be able to free it by inserting and removing a mini-stereo jack of the proper size. Inserting any kind of tool in the port may cause damage that won't be covered by your warranty.
If there's no red light, the switch may still be stuck in the headphone position. Try to free it the same way.
    8. Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard and mouse, if applicable. If more than one display is connected, disconnect all extra ones. Restart and test.
    9. If you have a MacBook Air, turn off Bluetooth and restart.
    10. Start up in safe mode. Don't log in; just restart as usual when the login screen appears. When you do, make sure the words "Safe Boot" do not appear in the login screen. If they do, the system is still in safe mode and sound won't work.
    11. Reset the NVRAM.
    12. Reset the SMC.
    13. Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/Preferences/Audio
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password. Restart the computer and empty the Trash. Recreate your settings in the Sound preference pane.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
    14. Reinstall OS X after backing up all data.
    15. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store.

  • Problem installing OSX 10.4 from Firewire DVD drive

Hi, I'd be very grateful if anyone can help... I've been trying to install OSX 10.4 from DVD loaded in an external Firewire Lacie DVD drive and haven't been successful yet. I have tried instructing startup from the DVD in System Preferences, holding Option on startup and selecting the DVD and also holding 't' on startup, which I was informed forced startup from an external Firewire device (this resulted in a large Firewire logo floating round the screen but after 10 minutes or so hadn't progressed into full startup). Having read some bits of info found on Apple support I can see there is some issue about installing OSX 10.4 from a DVD drive other than an internal Apple drive (although I can't see any explanation why). Could someone please let me know if there is another way of doing this? – I mainly want to get 10.4 installed because I want to get a new ipod which requires 10.4 rather than 10.3. Thanks very much, Sam

Some external DVD drives support startup. Some do not.
Holding down the T key at startup makes the Mac go into FireWire Target Disk Mode. It will not help you start up from the DVD drive.
If you have another Mac with FireWire and a DVD drive, you can use FireWire Target Disk Mode to mount your Mac's hard drive on the other Mac's desktop. Then, you can use that other Mac to startup from the DVD and run the installer, pointing to your Mac's hard drive for the installation.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583
I don't know of any other way, if the external DVD drive does not support start up.

If one drive works and the other doesn't that points the finger at the errant drive. They are cheap, replace it. To check formatting right click it in Finder and choose Get Info and look for Format type. Finally do you eject it when removing it or do you just pull it out of the USB connection?
