Internet drops at random intervals, applications freeze. Lots of info!

Ok, so my laptop has been on its last legs for a while now, always something.  Recently, the fan stopped working so I have to diligently make sure it doesn't overheat.  I was playing an online video game 2 days ago when it overheated and crashed
(forced shut off to de-powered state to prevent damage, not a bluescreen).  When I brought it back up, I started having some really bad problems.  The game I was playing wouldn't start citing "Memory at address 063eaff0 could not be written"
After deleting the whole game and restarting the computer I got it re-installed, it works fine now, that's resolved, I guess.
I think this crash broke something though, because now my internet keeps cutting out at random intervals, and Chrome keeps freezing.  The Chrome freezes actually almost always predict an internet drop.
So I booted into HP's system diagnostics and ran a memory test, it says I passed. Ran a full scan, hard disk passed, processor passed, WLAN passed, PCI Devices pass, battery pass, . Basically everything is passing but I can't actually complete a full
scan because it takes 2 hours and apparently is really using my system to its max ability, which is making it critically overheat and shut off.
So I booted into a recovery CD to see if maybe a system file was corrupted during a power loss crash, but apparently I am mis-remembering how recovery CD's work and my only options are to restore to factory default or restore to an earlier point, not to just
re-install all the necessary system files.
Next step was wait for one of the outages and run windows network "Troubleshoot Problems" tool, it did it's thing and actually, miraculously, gave me some sort of real problem other than "Check that you're connected to the internet".
What it told me was: "Your computer is trying to use a DNS server that is incorrect or doesn't exist."
My Chrome no connection error code is "DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NO_INTERNET"
Please don't read this last line and tell me to change my DNS server with no further explanation.
There are other computers in the house, and they are connected to the same wifi, and are having zero problems. Also DNS issues do not explain my chrome actually freezing.
Also, we're using google's DNS servers.
Attached is a rar with all the diagnostics I could get my hands on, and here is a contents list as well.

Hi AmantisAsoko,
Is the machine a laptop or a desktop?
For the overheat issue ,we may need to clear the dust of the machine to make the fan work correctly .If it is a laptop ,we may need to add an external fan to freeze the machine .
For the network issue ,have you configured any proxy server ?Have you configured the Tcp/Ip address manually ?
We can take the following step to have a troubleshoot .
1.Search "services.msc" and ensure "‘DHCP Client’ and ‘DNS Client’" are running .
2.Open a command line as an administrator and run "ipconfig /registerdns"
3.Run the following command line to reset the Tcp/Ip stack.
ipconfig /flushdns (Clear the dns cache)
nbtstat -RR (release and refesh NetBIOS names)
netsh int ip reset (reset ip settings)
netsh winsock reset (Reset Winsock Catalog)
Reboot
4.We can run "nslookup"to check the present dns information
For more information ,here is a link for reference :
Using NSlookup.exe
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/200525
"Also DNS issues do not explain my chrome actually freezing"
To verify whether the issue is caused by the specific brwoser ,we can try to use the other browser like Internet Explorer to have a check.
Best regards

  • Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5 beachballing and then freezing at random intervals

My computer at work has been beachballing and then freezing at random intervals for the past week or so.
What happens is that all processes stop. The cursor is still responsive for a while, and then the application I'm in, regardless of what it is, “beachballs.”
Occasionally I'm able to wait it out and the computer becomes usable again and other times it just freezes. Then I can't force quit so I have to do a hard power cycle and then start up again. This happens every day, at least 4 times a day.
I've been keeping the system.log open to look for any tell-tale issues and noticed that during every crash I get the following information:
    3 kernel[0] disk)s3: data underrun
    3 kernel[0]
and it repeats until the computer becomes responsive again or I decide to do a hard power cycle.
In addition, I checked the System Profiler diagnostics area and found this:
     Last Run:    11/8/10 1:05 PM
      Result:    Failed
      Failure type:    Memory
      Memory slots:    DIMM6/J43, DIMM7/J44
So…I switched out the offending bars and switched them for 1 GB bars and this problem was solved.
The diagnostics result for the Power On Self-Test:
    Last Run: 11/10/10 6:21 PM
    Result: Passed
However…I'm still experiencing beachballing and freezing problems with the same severity and frequency.
    Help!

So, to clarify: do you suggest I use Disk Utility first to see if any problems are uncovered? Or should I use TechTool Deluxe instead and test the RAM with Memtest?
My two cents would be use Disk Utility first. If you don't have the install disk handy, you can do the same thing with single-user mode. See this link for details: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1417
You have to run it from single user mode (start with command-S keys held down until you get a Unix terminal screen.
You can also run memtest from single-user mode, though I do not remember the command syntax offhand. Looking at an AppleJack log, though, I see the following command line entry that was used to run memtest on a three-pass check
    */usr/local/sbin/memtest all 3 -L*
Running memtest from single-user mode tests more of the RAM because little is occupied by the BSD kernel.
A snip of the terminal output running memtest:
    Test sequence 1 of 3:
    Stuck Address : ok
    Random Value : ok
    Compare XOR : ok
    Compare SUB : ok
    Compare MUL : ok
    Compare DIV : ok
    Compare OR : ok
    Compare AND : ok
    Sequential Increment: ok
    Solid Bits : ok
    Block Sequential : ok
    Checkerboard : ok
    Bit Spread : ok
    Bit Flip : ok
    Walking Ones : ok
    Walking Zeroes : ok
Somewhat thorough, though no test is completely bulletproof.

  • Wifi Internet Connection drops at random

I'm having a problem with my 27" iMac late 2009. The internet seems to drop at random. This morning I was online and then suddenly I wasn't. However I can still send and receive email using Mail and Twitter is still working.
I've tried resetting, rebooting, running network diagnostics and nothing seems to work. It says I'm connected and everything is fine however I cannot get to the internet through Safari and Firefox or the iTunes store. I can ping google.com just fine.
I have a valid MAC address and an IP address from my router. My Windows PC and my iPhone and Droid X all work just fine.
Can someone give me some troubleshooting tips here? Any ideas what it could be?

    Hi Gvegastiger,
The problem might be just with your iMac, so I will suggest you to check your firewall on your iMac, and if it is on make sure you are allowing incoming traffic in the area you need to work with...
Second I would check the Proxy settings on your iMac as well under Network profile. Also for troubleshooting purposes leave the IP address DHCP if you have it set static. And Under Network/Ethernet make sure you have it set "Automatically"
Third make sure you use ether Wireless or just Wired connection, not both. I don't know your network layout but if you have to separate networks that will be a problem when you have both of them enabled on separate networks.
Let me know if this helps,
    Goran

  • Applications freezing, won't sleep, won't shutdown

I've only had minor problems with Leopard, but have become quite concerned of late.
Over the past few weeks, Skype (older version 2.x??) would suddenly freeze with the beach ball, and nothing would make it shut down.  I would try force quit without success.  Went into activity monitor, but it wasn't even being shown there.  It was, however, still showing as being open on the dock.
I have to use skype everyday at work, so sometimes I would continue plugging away on the internet, then Safari would start to freeze and I'd have the same problems with quitting Safari. I'd manually force a reboot by holding down the power button, and usually i'd be sorted out.
I'd be fine and then a few weeks later this mysterious behaviour would reappear.  I downloaded 10.5.8, then Safari 5.0.6, and decided to get the new version of skype 5.2
Things seemed fine until today when these same symptoms reappeared.  This time, however, they seem worse.
    1. skype would sometimes merely bob up and down when i tried to open it.  when it did open, it would freeze upon receiving a message
    2. safari would then (sometimes) follow suit.  freezing up.  sometimes it didn't (i rebooted using power button numerous times today)
    3. i tried to open itunes and it would bob up and down without opening.  on another occasion it did open, but when i tried to play a song it froze.
    4. when things *seemed* to be running smoothly, the fan would be whirring away...even though I only had MS Word open.
    5. Again force quit would do nothing.  Skype would never show up in activity monitor, despite showing on dock as still being open.  itunes, however would show up in activity monitor and i coudl quit.
    6. other applications (i checked for new software, for example) would randomly freeze adn general operations were sluggish.
    7.  After a cold reboot, I tried to logout again without having opened any applications and it would merely hang and not logout/restart/shutdown.  I went into activity monitor again to kill login to see if that woudl work, but again it would just hang.
    8.  when it appeared to be running normally (minus the whirring fan), i closed the lid to put the computer to sleep, but it did not sleep.
Those are the symptoms.  I've tried:
    -repairing permissions
    -trashing skype
    -clearing cache (system/kernel)
using onyx for various other cleanups
    but the problem persisted.
Verifying disk said all was ok.  unfortunately, I do NOT have my original disks with me.  I am currently overseas (to where I would normally call home and foolishly did not bring).
I hadn't tinkered with anything nor downloaded anything odd.
running 10.5.8 on MacBook.  2.2GHz  2GB memory have over 10% of free disk space available.
if anyone has any ideas, would appreciate it.
A big clue, perhaps....I decided to log into my Admin account, and safari is acting fine, adn the fan is not going crazy.  not sure about skype, as i keep this account pretty bare, but shall try downloading later and report back.  Will also post a log of when itunes froze
    Thank you !

i've returned home now and everything seems to be fine again.  strange!
I read a different thread in which someone described a problem of applications not shutting down, and thinking it had to do with his wireless connection.
that sounds too bizzarre to be true, but that's the only thing that's changed from when i was at work until now at home.

  • My audio drops out randomly, hers is occasionally ...

For the past year I have frequently used Skype on my Android phone (Nexus 5) to talk to my fiancee on her Windows 8.1 laptop. We do so from our respective homes, so we're both on WiFi to a solid Internet connection (DSL in my case, cable Internet in hers). I'm using the latest Android Skype client (5.0.0.55107) and she's using the latest Windows 8.1 Skype client (6.21.0.104). Ever since the Android 5.0 (Lollipop) update, my audio keeps dropping on her end for no apparent reason.
This happens at random but frequent intervals and for short durations (ca. 30 seconds per episode). It is absolutely maddening. Even though she hasn't changed anything on her Windows 8.1 laptop, and I've reinstalled Skype on my Nexus 5, my audio drops out some of the time during every single call. This happens very often during a call. It's to the point that I can't even open my mouth without expecting that my audio will drop out in the middle of what I'm saying, so that I end up having to repeat myself. If I'm really frustrated, I'll just type what I was going to say.
On the first few calls after my Nexus 5 received the Lollipop update, her audio would also sometimes drop out. We had to hang up and reestablish the call for her audio to come back on my end. Since then, we haven't had that particular problem, but sometimes her voice is garbled - as if I'm only hearing every other syllable - even though she's speaking directly at the microphone. Both systems (phone and laptop) are up to date, latest drivers, latest Skype, etc.
Given that she hasn't changed anything at all on her end, it's rather clear that the latest Skype for Android has a problem. TL;DR: I appear to be "muted" to other caller at random, even though I'm not muting myself, and her voice is occasionally garbled. It happens over and over again during a call, without warning.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Unfortunately, although my audio is no longer dropping out, we have been unable to use Skype for the last couple of days.
Last night, I could neither receive nor make Skype calls using my phone.  If she called, it would only ring on my desktop PC.  If I called her, it never rang on her end, and would either ring once or not at all (i.e. the sound effect I normally hear when calling didn't play) and would simply "fail" for no apparent reason.
Skype on my laptop doesn't work well, because there is almost always a problem with my audio being replaced with a "white noise" type sound on her end at random intervals and durations.
So, we had to use Google Hangouts video chat last night.  It doesn't work that well either; frequently, there is an absolutely terrible audio feedback/echo problem.
I hope Skype can be made to work again on my phone.  I've given up hope of it ever working 100% on my laptop, but I'd rather use it on my phone anyway, as it's far more portable.

  • Leopard NAT downloads hanging at random intervals?

    Hey guys,
Tried upgrading to Leopard Server 10.5.2 for the first time today, with mixed results. Our office has computers that are given 192.168 addresses from DHCP on Leopard Server, and we use NAT+Firewall on Leopard Server to route traffic to the internet. Nothing fancy.
The new problem: downloads hanging at random intervals.
Things cruise just fine at first, but at some point -- sometimes at 4 MB, sometimes 20 MB, sometimes 200 MB -- transfers completely hang, and data would stop transferring.
Not just web data -- I had a number of remote SSH sessions simply freeze in the middle of typing.
This is using stock NAT and stock Firewall and stock DHCP.
Anyone else seen this, or is it just me?

This is happening to me as well. All web traffic will stall for about 20 seconds then startup again. It's really starting to get annoying. Can't find anything in the logs - the server is barely being taxed at all for disk/proc/network. I can't figure it out but my coworkers are starting to get ****** that ever 10 minutes the network goes out then back on.
I can still hit the machine internally via SS or Server Admin or SSH. Its happening on the external interface.
    Anyone else seeing this?

  • Basic behavior - compile vs. save, application freezes and other questions

    Hi all,
I've just recently moved from MS SQL to Oracle and found Oracle SQL Developer the only more or less working application to access the database and write scripts. Still, there are some issues which are beyond me in this application. So what I'd need to know:
    1) When I open a package and edit it, what is the difference between hitting CTRL+S (save) and Compile? I just need to change the code, not run the damn script. Run and Debug I suppose would execute the whole package.
    2) When I save a package, why does the application freeze? I have no idea what it is doing, but when I kill it the code is not changed.
    3) When I connect to packages of a different user why cannot it export the ddl / source code of the whole package?
    4) When I am inactive for some time, is there some normal way to reconnect to the connection other than disconnect + connect, which closes all windows I have open on the connection?
    5) Why does drag + drop a table name to SQL worksheet sometimes offer me to create a script and sometimes ignores me completely?
    6) Is there any way to convince the popups with table/column names to work also with variables and/or to show also data types of columns? Incidentally, is there a way to make it work all the time and not just during favorable moon phases?
Thank you ever so much for answering any but preferably all questions.

    1. None
    2. Might be a lock - check the Enterprise Manager
    3. What is connecting to packages? How are you trying that export?
    4. Go vote on http://htmldb.oracle.com/pls/otn/f?p=42626:39:1538555050886906::NO::P39_ID:10421 to add weight for a real reconnect option
    5. Script? You mean insert/update/select, right?
    6. You mean the completion insight? Note you can force it to show with CTRL-space. If that doesn't work you'll have to be more specific.
    Regards,
    K.

  • IPhone 3GS Problem/Touch Controls no longer respond after random intervals

    Hi all,
I need some answers regarding my iPhone 3GS 32gig, which was working perfectly until about a month ago, after I upgraded to firmware v3.1.
The touch screen 'locks up' i.e. it won't accept any input via the screen and seems to happen at random intervals, but the app continues to run. If I leave it long enough, it'll accept input again after a minute or two, otherwise, I hit the sleep button and then the home button to wake it, and it obeys my commands again. But only until the next time. It can occur using ANY app but really ***** when I'm de-stressing with a good game of Space Invaders Infinity Gene.
I've tried all sorts of things to correct the issue based on what I've read on the web, foremost, restoring the iPhone from a backup. That didn't help. I had about 500meg of free space left and thought maybe it needs more than that to function perfectly, so I deleted a lot of games and apps (mostly lite versions) and freed up enough space so that 1 gig was left available. Still no help. Tried restoring again, still no change.
When the 3.1.2 update came out, I hoped it would fix it. Alas, no.
Push notifications are turned off for my Mobile Me account, and for all the other apps that allow push notifications. I'm with Optus, not that that would make a difference (?).
Given that apps run one at-a-time, I can't believe any single app could be causing this behaviour, and I don't like the idea of trying to find out what that app might be if it is by copying them individually back to the iPhone just to see when the problem comes back again.
Oh yeah, and I've not jail broken my iPhone. Seriously.
Can anyone make any other suggestions? I imagine resetting all settings from the Settings screen will delete my progress on Space Invaders Infinity Gene, so I'd rather not if I can help it.
    Thanks in advance!
    - Alex

Not that it helps, but a me too here.
It randomly seems to stop responding for a while.
I often find I cant skip tracks in the music player etc.
This is a brand new stock phone, upgraded to 3.1.
Sleeping and turning on again seems to fix it, or waiting for ages

  • ITunes 11.1.2 unexpectedly quits at random intervals

Ever since I updated iTunes to the latest version (11.1.2), it has taken to suddenly quitting mid-song at random intervals for no discernable reason. Since iTunes is probably the piece of Mac software I use more than any other, this is rather hair-raising and I am becoming concerned that my iTunes library may be damaged if this continues. No more crashes since I installed the recent update. Let's hope it stays that way!

  • Frequent internet drops (T4 modem reboots, upstream issues)

We've been with Comast for about a year and a half -- from day one we've had lots of problems staying connected to the internet. We've tried a number of solutions to no avail. (replacing router, removing splitter, removing unnecessary cable splices, etc.)  After posting logs on some other forums, it seems we are experiencing some sort of upstream connectivity issue. Today the internet dropped about 10x in a span of 2-3 hours -- I looked at the modem status during this time and EVERY time the problem was the same -- T3 and T4 modem reboot errors and an inability to connect to upstream channels 46 and 47. It was these same two upstream channels EVERY time, which seemed odd. Here are a few snapshots of the logs and whatnot: Modem error log:http://tinypic.com/r/2ytxso5/8 Upstream channels 46 & 47 during T4 drops:http://tinypic.com/r/2d829f9/8 Overall modem signals (when modem is successfully connected):http://tinypic.com/r/2efsup5/8 From what I can tell, the signal strength is excellent. I'm guessing Comcast's first suggestion will be to "replace the modem." Keep in mind this has happened from day one when our modem was brand new -- as such, I really think there is something wrong with the actual physical line or something. From a frequency standpoint, this happens daily anywhere from every 10 minutes to every few hours (making things like online gaming literally impossible to do). At this point I think the only course of action is to have a tech come out and investigate this in-person. If anyone has any other suggestions let me know.

We had the same problem, up until about two weeks ago.  Our internet would keep dropping and the modem would re-cycle.  I do web design and run an eBay store, so this was incredibly frustrating.  It started only happening a few times here and there, but eventually it got to where it was down/re-cycling more often than not...at least it seemed to be. Comcast was good about sending a tech out right away to see what the problem was.  It was obvious it wasn't something that could be diagnosed and fixed over the phone support line. The technician came out and identified the same problem you are describing. Upstream connectivity issues. I don't remember all of the explanation, but we were unable to maintain a constant upstream connection.  After a few minutes of checking out our wiring, he discovered the problem.  During one of the last visits from a Comcast technician (we've had several problems over the years) they installed an 8-port splitter block to handle all of the cable outlets in our house. This was our problem.  The 8-way splitter caused the upstream signal to degrade and be unable to maintain the connection.  He took out the splitter block and replaced it with some sort of powered splitter (it looked expensive, but they didn't charge us for it).  This took care of the problem immediately and we haven't had any problems for the last couple of weeks. Our speeds also increased dramatically. If you have any splitters (especially more than say three or four ports) this could be your problem. 8-way's are definite no-nos.   At any rate, I would definitely have them come out and check out your problem.  It is more than likely a wiring issue.  I know how frustrating it is to experience the issues you are having.  The technician used his phone to somehow track down the problem.  The guy was really knowledgeable and explained things to me really well...I'm just too old to remember everything he said.  He was in and out in all of fifteen minutes.  At the end of everything, there was no charge for anything and our service has been wonderful ever since.

  • Random mouse pointer freezes

On my PPC dual 2.7 running latest Leopard 10.5.2, I have started experiencing random mouse pointer freezes. The freezes last about 10 seconds or so, then all goes back to normal. This happens maybe 10 times a day.
I cannot correlate this to any recent updates or installations. I have repaired permissions and zapped PRAM. My PPC is on 24/7 so all automatic maintenance routines run when they should.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Jeff

Are you using Time Machine or .Mac Synchronizing? Those automatically run about once an hour and can temporarily slow the computer function.
Open Activity Monitor from the Finder menu, Go/Utilities, Activity Monitor. When the cursor movement slows, look at what application is using the most CPU.
You might also want to restart the computer once every day (or night). You can use the System Preferences Energy Saver to set it up to automatically restart when you are not likely to be using the computer, like 3 AM. The restart does a bunch of system checks and resets things to improve function.

  • Internet drops when Starcraft 2 patches

    Hey,
So I installed SC2 the day before yesterday and as soon as it started patching the problems began. Everytime I open SC2 and begin to patch my internet drops. Airport wont drop or anything, just the internet will stop working. If I go to network diagnostics it says "network settings changed" before I can complete it and my internet will come back up. I have bootcamp on this computer and windows 7 has no problems with connecting, even when SC2 is patching. Any ideas?

The patcher of blizzard uses bittorrent and lots of times the chipset used in the older MBP has issues when too many requests are made too quickly which is what a torrent client would do and older airport units have this issue as well.
My old airport used to hang whenever i run vuze which is what made me buy wifi routers of other brands. Try it using other router brands and see if you still encounter the issue. I'm pretty sure its either the chipset on your MBP or the airport causing the issue.

Can't help you on the engine thingy but "random crashing" is not usually caused by After Effects. In my experience, nothing in AE is ever random, including crashes; everyting has a root cause. Far more likely to be caused by the source media in the project, access issues to that source media, or OS problems.

  • Wireless connection drops at random

    Hi,
I have a 27" late 2011 iMAC. Since I updated to Lion my wireless connection drops at random. The wireless symbol shows that I am connected, but i cannot use the internet.
The sollution at that time is that I turn off wireless, and than turn it on again. This solves the problem, but only temporarely. Since I also own a NAS for TimeMachine backups, the dropping of the connection is annoying because the backups fail most of the time.
What is causing this problem. I have 2 windows PC's and the connection stays. Router has latest firmware (fritzbox 7340), and my mac is up to date.
    Please help.
    Thanx in advance.

    Hi,
try to change the WiFi channel on your fritzbox, sometimes it works better on higher channels 11, 12, 13 especially if there are Telekom routers in your neibourhood. Make sure to use the latest Firmware for your Fritz!Box, the actually had a few issues in this area a few months ago. If this still does not help, only activate the 2,4 Ghz Bandwidth on the Firtz!Box and deactivate de 5 Ghz option.
I hope that this will solve your issue.
    Cheers
