Internet setup

I'm trying to setup internet access on Solaris 10. I followed the instructions from several posts but am still unable to get access. Here is what I've done so far.
- Added the nameserver IP's to resolv.conf
- copied nsswitch.dns to nsswitch.conf
- enabled svc:/network/dns/client (not sure if this one is required though)
I am unable to perform an nslookup. The computer does have a network IP and I can telnet onto the system. Not sure where to go next.
Thanks,
solaris newb

Yes, DHCP is used.

yeah, i am finding it really hard to setup internet connection too. I just installed solaris 10 onto my compaq persario x1000 laptop hoping it will change my life by using a different operating system other then windows which I have come to dislike with its patchs but the thing with solaris 10 is that nothing is setup already. I mean i love the java desktop thing it looks and feels like windows and everything but nothing is set up I can't use my mouse pad sd drive DVD/CDRW drive. i mean i am basiclly willing to give all that up for a Unix experience but all I really need is internet setup up in both modem and ethernet connection. can some one please help me thanks

  • Best Network/Internet setup at home

Hi guys...just wondering what the best setup would be using Cisco equipment at home. I have adsl with sky and at present i connect wirelessly to the net. I would like to create a home lab for my ccnp so would like to know the best router/equipment to create a home network which will allow me to connect to the net and study for my CCNP. Any help greatly appreciated
    Sol

    Hi there,
I'm not a CCNA yet, so I don't know what's needed for the CCNP exams or labs, so take this as advice from someone who uses Cisco kit at home only!
I have a Cisco 827 (ADSL router with 4-port hub) and Cisco 1721 (modular router with two WIC slots) at home.
The 827 gives me my ADSL WAN connection and has a built-in firewall. I use a home broadband connection, so my outside IP is obtained automatically, so it has to NAT as well.
The 1721 has a WIC-1T and a WIC-1ENET - the WIC-1ENET connects to the 827, and the 1721's built-in 10/100 connects to my switch. The WIC-1T can be used to connect to another such device, so I can use it to create a DMZ. The 1721 also NATs, and has a further ACL applied to provide my home devices with extra security. My DMZ is where I experiment :)
It's a working environment (it provides my family with broadband internet access) and gives me something to study with. And, they're fanless, so they're silent - a real bonus.
I don't know your budget, so I'm going to guess and say you're not looking to buy brand-new kit; used kit can get you through your exams every bit as well as newer kit can, depending on what you buy.
The 827 is probably not the best choice to go for (although they are quite cheap on eBay). If you can, an 837, 857, 877, or (if you have the cash) an 1800-series router with ADSL WIC would be a better choice. The 857W and 877W both have built-in 802.11g WiFi as well, which is a bonus.
The 1721 is a good router, but you may be better off with a 2651 (they cost more, even used) but with two built-in FastEthernet ports and several Voice-capable WIC slots and DSP resources, you can learn about VoIP on them as well.
I also wouldn't go for any router you can't apply a 12.4 IOS image to (due to age or memory requirements) as you'll want to have the most recent command-set available to study on.
If you don't get a router with a wireless connection, there are plenty of Aironet APs on eBay as well, but the 802.11g ones tend to sell quite high. You need to look out though because some that are sold are thin APs, which require a controller (and those aren't cheap, or condusive to a home environment).
As for switching, the 2950 is a good switch as it is compact - however, if noise is a concern and you don't need any more than 8 ports, a Catalyst WS-C2940-8TT-S will do very nicely (they also support voice VLANs, 802.1Q trunking, and have a gigabit uplink, and again are fanless, so they're good for the home).
Also, you can find small Cisco PIX firewalls on eBay. They're not so common, but they do come along from time to time.
Hope this is of some help!
    Kind regards,
    Graeme

My problem is where to go to from here when I try to ping to check the connection I get "unknown host" So I'm a little lost. I can see that the connection has been made and my ISP has allocated an IP address. I've tried to use netscape and keeps telling it cant find any url's.
So I'm pretty sure I've missed a step somewhere. Anyone have any ideas of what I need to do to actually be able to surf the net or test the connection.
    Thanks Shane

  • TC Internet Setup

I originally setup my TC to join a wireless network but I found it was slow in uploading all my photo files. I decided to create a new wireless network by plugging it directly to my DSL modem and disabling my old wireless. The TC can't find this network. Flashing amber. I reverted everything back to joining a wireless network then went into Airport Utility to create a new wireless network. Rebooted everything. No luck! Any suggestions? Thanks.

    Paul,
If you are NOT going to use the TC as your primary router, then make sure "Connection Sharing" under "Internet" is set to "Off (Bridge Mode)". Otherwise you will experience DHCP conflicts.
Otherwise you will need to give us more details as to how you have the TC configured. What configuration would you prefer?
    Cheers!

In the past, users had great success using a program called "Softick PPP" from http://softick.com/ppp

  • E55 internet setup & gmail problem

    Hello everybody!
I want to ask how do you get a default internet connection on my phone?
I want to set it to ''always ask'', but i dont find it in the options.
Everytime I browse the web or Gmail, there are the indicators up left for 3.5g, as well as the indicator up right for the wireless...and it never asks me which connection do I choose
I dont want to charge from my gsm operator internet when I'm at home!
In general, I need to know if wireless is available to use with gps, traveller, Gmail and other applications?
And how do I set gmail properly? there is gmail icon in messaging, there is e-mail from menu, there is e-mail in active stand by...it is kind of confusing i entered my username and password several times before it started working.
And Gmail stays active even if i disconnect it - did it a few times but it stays open and does traffic from my internet. I had to remove mailbox in order to get rid of it
So...how do I get it working properly ?
    Thanks in advance!

to configure your email access point, you do as armandfp said. to change your phones default acces point, you GOTO settings, then connection and then destinations if your phone has that option.
change your internet access points making your desired access point (WiFi) priority 1, i.e. top of the list.
you can use WiFi with GPS but it only helps in searches and downloading of maps. it doesnt aid as Assisted GPS. you have to change the POSITIONING settings under general settings and there, you untick all except integrated gps.
you network provided wont be used anymore for positioning.

Safari Bookmarks: These are stored inside /Users/username/Library/Safari/Bookmarks.plist. Copy the file Bookmarks.plist into the relevant Safari folder for each user so they all have the same bookmarks. This may be done from the terminal as you need super user access to access somebody else's account:
    sudo cp /Users/userwithbookmarks/Library/Safari/Bookmarks.plist /Users/Userthat_needsbookmarks/Library/Safari/
Change the "userwithbookmarks" and Userthat_needsbookmarks with the actual user names, and press return. Key in your admin password and press return again.
Email Accounts and data: Apple mail accounts are stored in the preference file, com.apple.mail.plist. Copying the plist file inside /Users/usersneedingmail-setup/Library/Preferences/ folder will give them access to the email accounts you want:
    sudo cp /Users/userwith_emailaccounts/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist /Users/Userthat_needs_emailaccounts/Library/Preferences/
Once again, change the "userwith..." and Userthat_needs..." with the actual user names, and press return. Key in your admin password and press return again.
Email data are stored inside the Mail folder in a user's Library. Once again:
    sudo cp -R /Users/userwith_emailaccounts/Library/Mail/com.apple.mail.plist /Users/Userthat_needs_emailaccounts/Library/
Address Book: Address Book stores its data inside the /Users/userwithdata/Library/Application\ Support/AddressBook/ folder. Once again:
    sudo cp -R /Users/userwithdata/Library/Application\ Support/AddressBook/ /Users/userwithoutdata/Library/Application\ Support/
The above are valid only if your query concerns a mac with multiple user accounts as per Ronda.
Kappy made an extremely good point. Having many accounts with access to the same data is a bit of an overkill. I would suggest one admin account for you and a standard (non admin) for the rest of the users.
