A plug-in is a type of add-on. It's a program on your computer that allows a browser (like Firefox) to render content it otherwise can't handle. Java, Flash Player, QuickTime and Silverlight are examples of plug-ins.

  • Can the Plug-in Compete?

Why hasn't Java become the dominant technology in RIA development?
I'm not the first person to ask this question, nor will I be the last. It is unbelievable to me that the company that invented the RIA over a decade ago has made little or no progress in this field and presents absolutely no challenge to inferior technologies that came later. JavaScript was named "Java" script deceptively to give it better visibility in the marketplace, but given its dominance in the RIA market, you'd never believe it.
I have been developing software for over 25 years now with the majority of my experience in C++ development and object-oriented analysis and design. Wanting to move into the web market, I started doing RIA development a few years ago. I was horrified by the development options available to me and the seemingly infinite amount of hoops I had to jump through to get even the simplest application functionality implemented and working correctly. I had been using Java to do backend work and had really come to like it. To me, the ideal situation would be to use Java to do the client-side work as well as the server-side work. Not only would I be using a real OO programming language, I'd also be using a single technology across the board. The problem was that there really was no nice client-side Java solution available. Swing was just too cumbersome and inflexible and other products had similar drawbacks. What I really wanted was a client-side solution that was as easy to use and just as flexible as HTML/CSS for building a UI, but provided the dynamic and robust programming features of Java. So I quit my full-time job about 18 months ago and started designing a Java-based RIA product called the Galileo RIA Framework.
One of the many frustrations that I had experienced working with JavaScript was the problem of inconsistent appearance and behavior on different browsers; therefore, when I started designing Galileo one of its primary requirements was that it be able to run on all major browsers on all major platforms and produce a consistent looking UI. Knowing the history of the Java Plug-in, I wasn't sure if it would meet this requirement. Much to my relief, it turned out that the latest Java plug-in (1.5 at the time) worked fine with all the latest and greatest browsers (IE, Firefox, Netscape, Opera, Safari, and Camino) on all of my test machines which included Windows XP and Vista, Mac OS-X, and a few Linux distros. This was great. I figured now all I had to do was focus on developing the actual UI framework and I would have the product I had been longing for and a product that the Java community would be excited about.
I recently released Galileo as a Beta and while many developers who have looked at the product have admitted that it is an impressive product and that they'd like it to gain much success, they are reluctant to use it because it depends on the Java Plug-in. This has been a major disappointment to say the least. I knew that applets had developed a stigma over the years, but I didn't realize how pronounced the distaste for the plug-in had become. The negativity and skepticism within the Java community itself is so overwhelming that any hope for wide acceptance of the plug-in seems impossible. The funny thing is that all the developers I have talked with would like the plug-in to become widely accepted, but in order for it to become widely accepted, it would have to be used, however, most website developers are hesitant to use it, because, well, it's not widely accepted.
I want to change this. Not only because the success of my product depends on it, but because I would like more job opportunities to be available to me as a Java programmer as the RIA market continues to grow.
Why did the Java Plug-in fail in the first place?
My guess is that there were several major reasons for the failure of the Java Plug-in. One, applets and the plug-in were introduced at a time when most users were limited to dial-up access to the internet. Downloading the plug-in and the applets that used it took too long for a normal user's patience. Two, a Swing UI compared to an HTML website designed by a graphics artist looked terrible. Three, platform and browser compatibility may have been an issue also, but not being involved in Java development back then, I don't know if that was an issue or not. Four, it has been said that installation of the Plug-in was not straightforward and could have been difficult for non-developers. Five, the web was still pretty new itself. The concept of the RIA didn't exist; therefore, there wasn't any pressure for websites to be anymore than straight HTML. Adding technology that complicated implementation, limited potential visitors, and looked bad, just didn't make any sense.
Can the Java Plug-in compete now?
I'm optimistic it can for several reasons. One, according to the latest statistics I've read, 86% of U.S. internet users now use broadband. Download times for JAR files and other resources have become negligible. Two, Sun has finally decided to rewrite the plug-in making it easier to detect, download, install, and upgrade. Also most major browsers will prompt the user in a standard way to install the plug-in if a page that requires it is loaded. Three, new operating systems / machines are coming with the Java plug-in already installed. I know both my Windows Vista machines from Dell did, my Mini-Mac from Apple did, and several distros of Linux install the plug-in when the OS is installed. Four, installing a plug-in just isn't a big deal for users anymore. According to a June 2008 survey 99% of internet enabled desktops have already installed the Flash plug-in and 85% have Java installed. Five, standard HTML websites are no longer the standard. To be competitive, websites will have to continue to evolve with RIAs being the latest evolutionary step. Where standard HTML sites with bits and pieces of JavaScript could be developed by graphic artists and other non-developer types, RIAs, because of the complicated implementations, require software developers. Where the major driving force in the web development market used to be graphics artists and non-developer types, as the RIA market grows software developers, many of which are Java developers, will become a greater driving force. This opens up more opportunities for Java. And six, with a framework like Galileo which allows easily customizable UI's that can look as good as any HTML/CSS based UI, aesthetics are no longer an issue for Java UI's.
I was discussing this issue with Marty Hall of www.coreservlets.com this week and here's what he had to say:
I would love it if a Java-based solution gained some traction in the RIA world. I spend a lot of time doing Ajax training, and right now, Ajax is tremendously complicated for developers. Developers have to learn xhtml, XML, JSON, JavaScript, Prototype, 37 other JavaScript libraries, and a server-side technology (servlets/JSP, PHP, ROR, or whatever). Even with integrated technologies like GWT or JSON-RPC, there are still an awfully lot of underlying technologies for a developer to master, and the interface is still limited by what current browsers can support."
I really hope your framework catches on. It would be a good thing. You could build apps that were so much better if you had a real programming language and a single underlying technology.
The more compelling apps out there that get people to install Java in their browsers the better. And the more powerful but simplified GUI frameworks like yours, the better.
    JavaRiaDev.org
I believe a window of opportunity has opened to give the Java Plug-in a rare second chance. It appears that Sun believes this too, since they have taken the initiative to redesign the plug-in and to create JavaFx. However, with no disrespect to Sun, if Java developers expect the plug-in to succeed due to Sun's efforts alone, I think they are sadly mistaken. In order for the plug-in to succeed, a concerted effort by the Java community will be necessary. For this reason I have created JavaRiaDev.org. The main initiative of this effort will be to pool developer resources to create RIAs that utilize the Java plug-in and appeal to a broad audience by coming up with new ideas for websites, copying successful website ideas and making them better, and/or trying to forge strategic partnerships with existing websites that already have a substantial user base who are looking to upgrade to RIA technology. The second initiative will be to provide the appropriate resources to help other developers interested in Java RIA development. I, of course, will be pushing Galileo, but will welcome the use of any product that promotes the use of the Java plug-in.
There will no doubt be skeptics in the Java community who say this is a fool's errand. But for those like me who are not content sitting on the sidelines waiting for others to decide their fate, I say join me and help me in my effort to make Java, if not the dominating, at least a viable option for RIA development. Personally I'd like to have an impact that creates the general opinion that any machine connected to the internet that isn't equipped with the Java plug-in is an inconvenience to the user. If a machine has a modern browser there's no reason for it not to have the plug-in.
If you are interested in becoming a part of this effort, please email me.
    Thanks,
    M. Warble

    Hi
I have discovered that my question above is a non-question. A user triggered by looking at the below article about Illustrator 2014 cc 17.0.2
    http://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/release-note/illustrator-17-0-2-release-notes.html
He had recently upgraded from wht we now know is 18.0 to 18.1 which is the latest version. He read the above artic
le and supposed that it was a bug fix release for his version - because the v17 ov18 number is not often displayed. It is usually just 2014 CC.
I have asked him to post a bug report about Adobe Illustrator CC 2014.1

Please remember to unzip the file from your Downloads folder in order to load them into Lightroom.
What is the error in Lightroom?
Did you read the 'Where to Find it' section?

I am a long-term user of Lightroom as a standalone product with a perpetual licence. As a retired person on limited income, it is very disappointing to me that Adobe have introduced the 'Creative Cloud' (CC) subscription service in order for me to be able to continue upgrading this excellent product. It will be for me too expensive at the minimum cost of £9 per month. The additional services that CC brings are personally of no relevance or usefulness. Adobe should be prepared to support existing users who are, like myself, non commercial, amateur photographers by giving them the simple opportunity to upgrade to Lightroom 6 as a standalone, perpetual licence product. As a member of a camera club I know my co-members who use Lightroom are equally disappointed by this move to a subscription-only service.

That is possible, John, but it is only speculation on your part. Might, not will.

There is a "Lightroom 6" upgrade available for US $79 if you have a valid license for any of the earlier versions. From what I can tell, the only difference between Lightroom 6 Full, Lightroom 6 Upgrade and LightroomCC is in the license. The download file is the same.
Other differences - with CC you get LrMobile/LrWeb and they throw in a free copy of Photoshop too.
Yes, but when I bought my standalone license and clicked on the "Download" button it took me to the LightroomCC page. The downloaded file is named Lightroom 6, but in the CC app the installed program is LightroomCC (2015).

FCE 4.0.1 won't open when I click the icon in the Dock or in the Applications icon of FCE. It had been working well but I had trouble when I trashed the reference Scratch disk to a project and I was asked to get it back. I checked all my drives through verify in Disk Utility and a couple needed repair - eventually were given the OK. I then Shut Down and rebooted, I then trashed the FCE App and reinstalled from the Install discs and , finally, I tried opening a FCE project. None of these caused the FCE App to open with Browser, Viewer, Canvas,. Time Line. All that happens is the the first FCE window, the one that says FCE registered to...and the other that says loading AE Effects, Video Effects does show but then nothing except my Desktop with it's various folders and files I also downloaded the Plug In Tom Wolsky suggested to a recent query.
All I can think of is to backup everything to HDs and take this iMac in for a service. It is only six months old - I reckon it will be poor driving by it's proud but unskilled driver!

    Don't panic . . . . . yet!
You may not have trashed FCE properly.
Deleting the application icon is useless as there are a number of files hidden elsewhere which may be corrupt.
Download this free app to uninstall FCE completely and then reinstall it.

  • How do I set MacBook to an external display when the plug and play doesn't recognize it?  I am trying to set my Samsung 530 LCD as a monitor but HDMI and VGA cords (and the adaptor for them) doesn't seem to work.

I have tried everything I can find on line but they all claim that the plug and play works, and they don't for me.  I tried the mini dvi to HDMI and a HDMI cord and that was not recognized no matter which unit I rebooted first.  I found someone who said that my Macbook might be too old for the HDMI technology so I returned the cords and went to the VGA cord and adaptor.
I tried this first with the HDMI setup:

I contacted Samsung support and they said I needed to set the display settings to external display on the mac.  I went to the display settings and moved the icon to my status bar.  When I click on search for displays or whatever it says (I'm not at my Mac right now) it does nothing.
    What am I missing?

I am using MAC OSx 10.5.8 (9L31a) as my operation system.  The TV says "No signal.  Check connected device's power, cable connection and source selection."  Seems to me that that goes in hand with what the Samsung tech said about the Mac needing to be forces to use the external display.  But how do I do that?

  • When using a wired connection from pc to tv as monitor, should the pc be shut off before connecting the plug?

I bought a mini display/port adaptor and an hdmi cable to connect my laptop to my tv as a monitor.  I've used it a few times and it works fine, but my display changes in some ways, I don't have mhy desktop picture, just a blank screen.  Everything seems to work fine, but certain screen details or items aren't there..  Should I be shutting off the pc before I put the plug in or disconnect it?

    Correction.
I have a Airport Extreme Base Station. I am not sure if it makes a difference.
Thank you for any help you can provide.

Safari 5.0.5 keeps crashing and I get the message: "Safari quit while using the .GepetoMathActivityMaker.so plug-in.” I don’t recognize this plug-in. Could anyone help me find it and delete it? Here’s what I’ve done so far.
I read the report. It lists the path where this plug-in resides (Users/Shared.) I checked that folder, but I can't see the plug-in there.
    I looked in /Library/Internet Plug-Ins and ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins. I don't see the plug-in there either.
I’m trying to contact the third party. I don’t know where this plug-in came from, so I googled it. It’s made by Gepeto Software. I’m waiting to hear back.
I even ran Disk Warrior but it found no problems. I also reset and restarted Safari….it’s still crashing.

You installed a variant of what’s commonly called the “Flashback” or “Fakeflash” malware, although the names are obsolete.
If you’re certain you know when that happened, and you back up with Time Machine or something similar, you can save yourself a lot of time by restoring your whole system from the most recent snapshot taken before it was infected. Then take Steps 8, 9, and 11 below.
How can you tell when the infection took place? All you can be sure of is that you were infected some time before the problems started.
If you don’t know when you were infected, there's no easy, reliable way to remove the malware, because it's constantly changing. There are differences of opinion on this site as to the best of course of action, so you should do your own research before deciding how to proceed.
I suggest you take the following steps:
    1. Disconnect the infected machine from the Internet immediately.
    2. Back up all data to at least two different devices, if you haven't already done so.
    3. Boot from your recovery partition (if running Mac OS X 10.7 or later) or your installation disc (if running an earlier version of the Mac OS), launch Disk Utility, and erase the startup volume. This action will destroy all data on the volume, so you must be sure of your backups.
    4. Reconnect to the Internet and install the Mac OS.
    5. Reboot and go through the initial setup process to create an account with the same name as your old one. Don’t import anything from your backups at this stage.
    6. If running Mac OS X 10.6.x or earlier, run Software Update. You may have to run it more than once to fully update your system.
    7. Restore the contents of the top-level subfolders of your home folder except “Library” from the most recent backup. The Library folder may contain components of the malware. This is where restoring becomes difficult, and I can only give general guidelines.
Of the top-level subfolders of Library that are visible in the Finder, I think it’s safe to restore the following, which contain most of the data you’d want to keep:
    Audio
    Calendars
    ColorSync
    Colors
    Favorites
    FontCollections
    Fonts
    Images
    Keychains
    Mail (except Mail/Bundles)
    Safari (except Safari/Extensions)
The following are not safe to restore, at least not in full:
    Application Support
    Internet Plug-Ins
    LaunchAgents
    Preferences
If you have Time Machine snapshots of these folders that you’re sure are older than the infection, you can restore from one of those snapshots.
Folder not mentioned above may or may not be safe. If in doubt, don’t restore them. Don’t restore any hidden files or folders, no matter where they are. Hidden files should be considered suspicious.
    8. If you’re running Mac OS X 10.5.8 or earlier, launch Safari and select Safari ▹ Preferences… ▹ Security from the menu bar. Uncheck the box labeled Enable Java. Because of known bugs, Java in those OS versions is unsafe to use on the Internet. (Note: I’m not referring to JavaScript, which is unrelated to Java, despite the similar names.) If you’re running Mac OS 10.6.8 or later, you should still disable the Java web plugin unless you really need it. Few websites have legitimate Java content nowadays. If you encounter one that does, enable Java temporarily.
    9. Change every Internet password you have, starting with banking passwords. Check all financial accounts for unauthorized transactions. Take this step only after you’ve secured your system in the preceding steps, not before.
    10. Reinstall your third-party software from fresh downloads or original media, not from backups which may be contaminated.
    11. If you use any third-party web browsers, disable Java in their preferences. As with step 8, this step is mandatory if you’re running any version of Mac OS X older than 10.6. Otherwise it’s optional, but recommended.

My ios update keeps getting stuck on the Restoring iPhone software stage. I uninstalled iTunes and reinstalled it again, but still nothing. Now I can't even use my phone as it shows the plug into iTunes screen. Please help!!!! Thanks,

A Restore first downloads a new copy of iOS to your computer. On a slow Internet connection this can take a long time. How fast is your connection? How long would you expect it to take to download 900 MB?
That's assuming nothing is interfering with the download. Some firewalls and antivirus programs will block the download or slow it down. So you should temporarily disable your security software. Security software can also block the update after the iOS download is complete.
