Iomega ZIP 100 Drive

Hi,
I want to use an Iomage ZIP drive (parallel version) 100, I searched the web and found out that there are two modules for ZIP drives ppa and imm - as far as I have read my specific drive has to be used with the ppa driver. But the module is absent and the line in the kernel configuration file is commented. I tried to build a new kernel with this option set to m but I failed horribly. Although I compiled the kernel, it wouldn't work, there was no vmlinuz file?!
I'm a total newbie to kernel compilation/configuration - can someone out there give me a hint?
Thanks,
hightower

  • Iomega ZIP-100 Drive - configuration

    Hey all,
how to configure Iomega ZIP-100 Drive (SCSI) under System 7?

    Hello, moksienciuk.
You can configure many drive settings with Iomega Tools, which you can find on the Tools disk that comes with the Zip drive. If you don't have an Iomega Tools disk, you may be able to find one online. (Iomega no longer sells them, so check Amazon or eBay.)
    Does this answer your question?

  • Iomega Zip 100 Drive Stopped Working in OS 10.4.4

We have 3 G4 Macs which have internal Zip 100 drives installed. they have all worked fine until we upgraded to system 10.4.4, and now the computer does not recognize the zip disk when inserted.
Iomega says that the software for the drives is native to OS X, and they do not have a driver update beyond 4.0.2. I am stumped in trying to figure out how to get the drives working again, and will welcome help on this problem.
    Dudley

Hi, Dudley. It looks like Iomega has abandoned the old and now very obsolete Zip 100 technology in favor of newer, larger, faster, more reliable, longer-lived, and higher-capacity removable media, notably the 35GB-per-cartridge Rev technology. I doubt that either Iomega or Apple will bother to write a driver for Zip 100 drives that is compatible with any recent version of OS X, never mind any future version.
When a 100MB Zip disk costs around $5 (when you can still find them), a 700MB CD-R costs 15 cents, a 4.7GB DVD-R costs $2, and huge, fast hard drives go for $.30-.$35/GB, there's just no reason to keep using Zip100 drives or disks. Put Zip's very high costs together with the very limited lifespan of a Zip disk, and you get a technology that is dead, dead, dead.
Find an old Mac that can still read your Zip disks, copy everything off all of them onto a FireWire hard drive, and say goodbye to Zips.

  • Will Iomega Zip 250 Drive Work?

I use a Dual 1 Ghz PowerPC G4 Mac (QuickSilver 2002); run Mac OS X 10.5.8.  I have one open bay below my factory installed optical drive.  Will the:
Iomega Zip 250 MB drive ATAPI work in my Mac?  Mfg. #: 11113  Will I be able to use my Iomega Zip 100 MB disks? Enclosed please see pictures.

When two devices share the same data ribbon cable in a system that doesn't support "Cable Select," the device at the end connector of the ribbon cable is configured as "master," while the device connected to the middle connector is configured as "slave."  Your optical drive likely has its configuration jumper installed as "master," so the Zip drive should have the small plastic jumper installed across the  pins marked "slave."  Do you primarily have 100 MB Zip disks or a mixture of 250 MB and 100 MB disks?  The reason I'm asking is to determine if you've already acquired the Zip 250 drive or would prefer a Zip 100 drive?  A Zip 250 drive can read and write both Zip 250 and Zip 100 disks, but erasing/reformatting a Zip 100 disk in a Zip 250 drive with the IomegaWare software takes a long time.  Iomega had a tech support article about this some years ago.  Since the IomegaWare software isn't compatible with OS 10.5.x, you wouldn't attempt to install it anyway.  If you only need to access these Zip 100 or 250 disks for file retrieval, why not save yourself some trouble and use a USB bus-powered external Zip 250 drive.  It connects to your computer via a USB cable for both power and data, so it doesn't need a separate power supply.  They're no longer manufactured (as is the case with all Zip drives), but you could probably find one at eBay.  I recently saw a new-in-box/sealed Zip 250 USB drive priced at $10 in a thrift store, but it had no takers for weeks.  After CD-R/RW and DVD±RW disks replaced Zip 100, 250, and 750 drives as the preferred media for data backup, flash drives have gradually replaced CD and DVD burners.

  • Iomega zip drive won't copy

After having a corrupted hard drive fixed and Os 10.2.8 reinstalled, I found that my Iomega Zip 100 drive wouldn't copy large folders (microsoft word). It would copy individual files and smaller folders. The error message I got was -50. I understand that this relates to bad zip discs.
I tried a new zip disc and also tried a different Iomega zip drive, with identical results. It seems that the problem lies with the computer, not the zip drive. I'd be grateful for any suggestions.

Apologies for the acronyms. HFS and HFS+ are Mac drive formats. Newer machines' drives must be HFS+.
DU is Disk Utility and should be located in Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities. DU lets you run some maintenance checks of existing drives and format them if needed. Example, you buy a new hard drive and you have to make it Mac-happy. It's done with DU.

  • Problem connecting PB 1400 to Iomega Zip Drive

I am having difficulty connecting an iomega zip drive to my pb1400. I have the adapter that goes into the 1400 connected to wide scsi-type plugs that are mated and then into smaller scsi on zip. But when I power on, I get a flashing "2" enclosed in a diamond. I may have some kind of termination problem. Not sure. Any suggestions? TTommy

    TTommy,
It sounds like you have a SCSI Disk Adapter for SCSI Disk Mode instead of the SCSI System Adapter for adding external SCSI Devices. The HDI-30 SCSI Disk Adapter will have 30 pins or the adapter will have a small switch for 'disk' or 'system'. A standard HDI-30 SCSI System Adapter will have 29 pins; the 30th pin forces the computer into SCSI Disk Mode.
If you have the Zip 100 drive, make sure the termination switch on the back panel is turned 'ON'.
Here is a good article on SCSI devices; please read it carefully, especially the part where all devices must be powered off when making any changes to the SCSI chain.

  • Help! Zip 100 USB

Several of us have problems with Iomega Zip 100 and 250 USB drives with a K7N2 board. When WinXP SP1 attempts to load, the boot is held up for up to 2 minutes before going to the welcome screen. If you disconnect the Zip USB drive, the system boots normally. If you the change the USB bios setting from v1.1+v2.0 to just v1.1, the system boots normally. I've tried both the nForce, Microsoft and Iomega drivers with no results. MSI has not returned my calls. Does this possibly have something to do with the nForce chipset allowing IRQ's beyond 15? Mine for the USB are at 20, 21 and 22. Is it a Microsoft USB driver issue? Nobody has been able to find a solution to this problem.

My boot dervice order is floppy, hard drive, CD rom. I tried substituting the Zip 100 USB drive as the first boot device and the computer froze when accessing the Zip drive. Now with the 3.4 bios, I can not even get it to boot into WinXp SP1 with just the v1.1 in the bios set-up. I have a thread open at http://www.nforcershq.com under the MSI motherboard forum. No luck there either. I now believe this is an issue with MSI and the bios or some set-up issue in the bios. I had an ECS board with the SIS 635 chipset and did not have this problem. I have not verified with anyone if this problem exists in Win98 or Win2k. My computer specs are:
MSI K7N2-L board, 2200+ TBird processor (no overclocking)
Single stick Crucial 512MB PC2700 ram
    Visionetek GeForce4 TI4200 graphics card

  • Zip 100 disk--cannot reformat!  Very weird--any ideas?

I'm trying to reformat a Zip 100 drive, but it's grayed out in Disk Utility.
In the Finder, I did a Get Info and checked the Sharing & Permissions, but it says "You can only read"!! And there seems to be no way of changing that!
I've presuming that I "locked" or otherwise protected it (Zip Tools?) back in my OS 9 days.
I have access to all the files, and have copied them over, so it's no great loss, but it's one of those irritating things--and it would be good to reuse it.
Any tricks up the old Unix sleeve? Any Terminal commands to tell the drive "Open Sesame!"??

A few years ago I started leaving all my zip 100 and 250 disks formatted for PC.
Reason was twofold. I use the zip disks on both Macs and PCs and just seemed to have less trouble with mounting and reading.
Did you check to see if your Mac shows disk as Locked (Select disk icon and File-Get Info to see if Locked box is selected). Unlikely, but just a thought.
And a long shot - hookup your usb Zip drive to PC and pop the disk in. Probably will not read it, but if it does reformat there as MS-DOS.
Is kinda weird and maybe something here (but again I doubt it):

  • Where do I put Iomega zip drivers in OS 7.5?

Thanks to those who have been helping me I've found some old Iomega drivers for my external SCSI Zip 100 drive, but I don't know what to do with them now. The driver is just one file really (version 4.2).
There is no 'install' program. Where do I put Iomega drivers in OS 7.5 to get the drive recognized? Is it control panel or extensions? Or somewhere else?

Drag that item to the closed icon of the System Folder; Mac OS 7 will then put it in the correct location after asking for confirmation.

  • Peripheral for external Iomega Zip MAC 100 & Mac Book Pro

I would like to download files from an external Iomega Zip Mac 100 but the peripheral is not compatible with my MacBook Pro 13".
What do I need to get in order to do this, and will I also need to download a driver for the Mac to see it?
    Thank you.

I haven't used a ZIP drive with a Mac in over a decade... I have no idea what sort of interface the Iomega device has? Do you know?
More likely than not, you're going to have to find some computer that has the right interface.

  • Iomega zip drive disk tool 4.3 wanted

Hello everyone! I bought a iomega Zip Drive to transfer data to my LCIII. I followed the instructions of the iomega manual and no luck. Overtime I start macintosh 7.5 at my LCIII no iomega zip drive icon is displayed at my desktop. The manual says that it should be "Disk Tools 4.3" I have the disk inserted but no luck. The zip drive seems to work. I also cheked the SCSI cable connecting my LCIII to my Macintosh SE and it worked, I transfer a few files from one machine to another. So the cable is fine. Thats why im thinking that the problem could be the Zip Disc Tools 4.3. Is there ant place where I can download the driver 4.3 and install it with floppys?
    Thanks in advance!
    Carlos

    Hi Carlos,
Is it a Zip 100 SCSI drive? Did you get any software with the drive? Was the Zip disk brand new or used? Any information about previous formatting etc?
The following web page could possibly be of interest to you.
    http://www.vintagemacworld.com/pluszip.html
The page describes how to make a Zip drive work with a Macintosh Plus (using a third-party formatting utility). A modified procedure may or may not be applicable in other cases. You may want to carry out a few experiments, for example, with your LC III.

  • How to transfer photo files from Iomega Zip Drive cassette to my iMac?

    1 GHz PowerPC G4
    768 MB DDR SDRAM
    external hard disk 500 GB
    external hard disk 125 GB
Many years ago I stored/copied my photos onto a Iomega Zip Drive cassette. Subsequently I lost everything in a computer malfunction which Apple Store could not fix; they ultimately replaced my computer. The computer that I was using when I used the Iomega Zip Drive was a Mac Quadra, not an iMac. Unfortunately, I had not backed up anything so the only thing that I have from the time prior to the malfunction is what I have stored on these Zip Drive cassettes and on the hard drive of the iMac that malfunctioned and was replaced with a new iMac. The photos that I really want to get are those of my husband who has since passed away.
It has been so long that I used them or even looked at them that now I don't know how to get those photos onto my present iMac (and I am assuming that it is possible).
Would you be so kind as to tell me what to do to transfer my photos from the Iomega Zip Drive cassette? Thank you very much.

Lorna, I'm sorry to hear of your loss.
The easiest thing to do is to purchase an External USB Zip drive (link). As ZIP disks are now legacy technology ebay has a great many available which means they are pretty low cost. Simply connect the drive and insert the disk. The disk will mount on to the desktop.
Alternatively you could see if a local Internet café still has such as drive available and they will be able to burn the contents to CD for a few dollars.
    Hope that helps.

  • Does OS 9 have built in support for external Iomega Zip drives?

    Hi,
Does OS 9.x have built-in support for external SCSI Iomega Zip drives?

Yeah, you are correct, but Iomega's drivers & APPs were one really destabilizing factor for OS9, as well as ruining a few ZIP Disks with that Death Head crash, and being a nuisance. Intech's drivers gave twice the R&W speed, never failed, never crashed, could Format & Partition them... also worked for MOs, JAZZ, SyJets, other Syquests from 44MB to 550MB, and any other drive regardless of IDE, SCSI, FW, USB.
