IOPS capped on a VM within Hyper-V
quick question ... we get 100,000 IOPS once we used SQLIO against a VHDX file . ( let's say disk2.vhdx)
from inside a VM , we mount the same disk as a secondary disk and run SQLIO against it ; we get about 30,000 IOPS.
There is no QoS for storage defined yet ..
Is there any other limit ? we increased VM memory to 64 GB , processor to 8 and never went above 30,000
Hi,
The Hyper-V storage stack also uses unbufferred writes to make sure that the writes from the guest bypass the underlying host filesystem stack. When you use the SQLIO you
should create a file as big as possible, so that you can exercise the entire disk. For hard disks, creating a small file causes the head movement to be restricted to a portion of the disk. Unless you’re willing to use only a fraction of the hard disk capacity,
these numbers show unrealistically high random IO performance.

HI im wanting to setup a study lab containing several windows 2012 r2 servers (mixture of core and full installs) to allow me to study towards my MCSA in server 2012 r2 and then for MCSE.
Physical equpiment,
1 pc which is has window 8.1 pro installed from this machine. This machine i would like to remote manage and connect through to my Hyper-v server and then into any of the virtual machines. (this machine is more of a gaming pc so not
able to run to many vm's from it)
2 pc bought Just for study 8 core processor 1 tb of hhd space 16 gb of ram.
This machine i would like to setup using hyper-v server 2012 r2, which then i would create a test domain within it also with some clients allowing me to play and undstand the principles im learning.
now im getting conflictiong information regarding the Hyper-v server 2012.
If i set the hyper-v server up as a standalone in a work group. Would i be able to manage ther VM's within the hyperv server from my external windows 8 pro machine using the remote server management tools or would i need to connect that pc
to the domain.
Things I think i can do but not sure. as im still learning
Could I setup a server 2012 r2 running AD dns and add the hyper-v role then wihtin that create the rest of the domain inside, allowing me from my other phyical machine log on to domain and manage all servers and machines.
Could I set up as i originally suggested, set up hyper-v 2012 server in a workgroup, then create the domain within the hyper-v server but still connect from my external pc to manage the hyper-v and all the internal VM's within the domain.
I could run a Domain controller on a VM from my other windows 8 machine (within hyper-v or wmware), then on the 2nd machine install the hyper-v server connect it to the domain running from the other machine from what i can see, many people say this is the
better option, BEST Practice, but this is only a lab and i dont require resilience. and i would prefer to have my as a sever manager via the remote tools.
So what i like to know if you can point me in the right direction either by a guide for someone who has setup a similar to me.
or tell which of the above options is possible or not so i dont waste anytime.
Network, i know i can do this virtually but i already have cisco routers and layer 2 swicthes so i may make the network lab via them.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give me"If i set the hyper-v server up as a standalone in a work group. Would i be able to manage ther VM's within the hyperv server from my external windows 8 pro machine using the remote server management tools or would i need to

It makes it easier to set up if everything is in the same domain, but it is quite possible to manage the VMs without being part of the domain. A very useful tool that I use for my lab all the time (my lab is in a lab domain and my laptop is in the
corporate domain with absolutely no trusts between them) is RDCMAN.
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=21101 I all my machines, physical and virtual, defined within RDCMAN and can easily connect to any one of them from my laptop. But to understand how to manage everything remotely, I create
one virtual workstation within the domain and load all the management tools on it. I RDP to the management workstation and perform most management functions, but I can get to any machine directly if I need to.
"Could I setup a server 2012 r2 running AD dns and add the hyper-v role then wihtin that create the rest of the domain inside, allowing me from my other phyical machine log on to domain and manage all servers and machines."
Yes, but you could also build the AD as a VM, too.

Hello,
I have been trying to find information on the following scenario:
What I have:
Windows 8.1 Pro with Hyper-V enabled (host computer)
5 Hyper-V virtual machines installed (2-Windows 8.1, 2-Linux Distros, 1-Windows Server 2012 r2)
What I want:
I'm currently taking a networking fundamentals class and want to setup a virtual network to practice TCP/IP and other networking basics.
What i've done:
Created External, Internal, and Private virtual switches.
Tried various IP configurations with both Internal and Private virtual switches to connect guest machines
Have not been able to connect the virtual machines
CAN ping one direction between two vm's when I leave the IP configs to DHCP and "obtain DNS automatically" although the APIPA addresses are assigned. But cannot type IP into Explorer window and access virtual machine.
My question is:
How on earth do I connect the VM's WITHIN hyper-v? Do I need to setup the Windows Server 2012 r2 to act as DNS and DHCP server for the vm's or can the host computer perform these functions?
Me:
My networking skills are basic. I do understand the language but not the concepts fully yet. I've researched the heck out of this topic and found NO concise information. Please advise!
Thanks so much!

That is not really a Hyper-V problem. It is a basic Active Directory question. You would have the same problem if you had set this up on physical machines behind an Internet gateway (and you solve it in exactly the same way).

Windows 8.1 Hyper-V - Error while configuring the hard disk 0xC03A0014
Hello. I have just enabled Hyper-V on my Windows 8.1 laptop.
Dell Latitude E7440 i7-4600U @ 2.10GHz
I can create a Virtual-Switch but I am unable to create a new Hard Disk or Virtual Machine within Hyper-V. I get the same error for both processes.
Error: The Virtual Machine Management Service encountered an error while configuring the hard disk on virtual machine New Virtual Machine.
Failed to create the virtual hard disk.
The system failed to create C:\Users\user\Documents\Test\New.vhdx .
Failed to create the virtual hard disk
The system failed to create C:\Users\user\Documents\Test\New.vhdx . A Virtual disk support provider for the specified file was not found. (0xC03A0014).
I have ran all Dell Client System updates and all of windows updates.
I have attempted to create a virtual machine on the current SSD and also an external drive. The same error appears.
I have also attempted to create a virtual hard disk via Hyper-v with a Base vhdx, still the same error occurs. I've tested the base image on other laptops of the same model and windows 8.1 without issue.
Any thoughts on how I can fix this?
Thank you,
-JakeHi Jake,
"Enable Data Execution Protection (DEP) in the BIOS and make sure the Format of drive file system is not fat32.
1. Uninstall Intel Active System Monitor 3.0, if installed.
2. Disable "Intel IPMI Service" and "Intel Monitoring Agent" Service.
3. Open regedit and locate: HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\imbdrv.
4. Change the Start Key to 4 (Disabled).
5. Locate HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E97D-E325-11CE-BFC1-0 8002BE10318}.
6. Take ownership of the ‘Properties’ key.
7. Give yourself full permission for this key.
8. Now locate the properties key; if you see a ‘Security’ entry there, that is your problem. Delete this key.
9. Try attaching or adding the VHD again after rebooting.
If above steps did not help, add the Network Service account to Local Administrator group."

Can't install Hyper-V on Windows 8.1 Pro
I have a Dell XPS L702x laptop with 2 hard drives, one of them has a MBR partition and has Hyper-V running without problems, but in the second drive, which is a SSD disk and has a GPT partition, I can't install it. It seems to install, gets to about 95%
and then I get a message: "Failure configuring windows features, reverting changes" and then it reboots and reverts the installation attempt.
I have tried the following commands:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Sfc /scannow
But no errors were found, and I also run coreinfo with this results:

HYPERVISOR - Hypervisor is present
VMX * Supports Intel hardware-assisted virtualization
EPT * Supports Intel extended page tables (SLAT)Can you clarify what you're trying to do as it's unclear to me? You've got a laptop with two drives, and you've already got Hyper-V installed on the laptop, and you're now trying to install it on the other drive?
If that's the case then I'm unsure why you think you need to.
You only have Hyper-V installed once on a machine, and it's ALWAYS installed on the boot partition of the machine because that's how it works. Effectively once installed the Hypervisor sits on the boot partition, and the local copy of Windows becomes a management
VM running on top of the hypervisor (that's why the VM's you create get as good performance as the host OS does, as they sit alongside each other rather than on top of one another).
If you're trying to use the second drive (the SSD) for Hyper-V then you simply need to create a new VM from within Hyper-V that you have installed already, and during the installation you're able to choose where to put the VM files, at which point you can
set it to use the SSD for those files.
I've got the same setup on my home machine, though in reverse, eg my boot partition is an SSD, and I've got a large HDD that hosts my VMs. -

From what I can gather VSS will be able to run without the need to shutdown the Ubuntu VM but the backups are not running when Windows Server Backups run?
How can I verify IF any backups of the VM have run successfully at all?
I am new to Hyper-V - but from what I can see , it seems that no VM backups are running . The normal Windows Server backups are running nightly. I would like them to run together without having to restart/ take offline/reboot the VM.
This is a production server and I need to avoid rebooting as much as possible-Hi Sir,
The following daemons must be installed manually for Ubuntu distributions:
VSS Snapshot daemon – This daemon is required to create live Linux virtual machine backups.
KVP daemon – This daemon allows setting and querying intrinsic and extrinsic key value pairs.
To install both daemons, please use the following command:
Copy
# sudo apt-get update
# sudo apt-get install hv-kvp-daemon-init
# uname –r
<kernel release>
# sudo apt-get install linux-tool-<kernel release>
# sudo apt-get install linux-cloud-tools-<kernel release>

Where is the Virtual Network Manager in my Hyper-V under Action in my Hyper-V Manager
Hi there - I would not say I am a novice at creating environment within Hyper-V. I have built or should I say created, and then deleted several virtual environments. I am familiar with the process of creating virtual hard disks, virtual machines and then
selecting the appropriate switch etc.
To make a long story short I was having issues connecting my servers this time around. Worked fine the last time I built this same environment. I was researching various blogs and TechNet articles and they mention a "Virtual Network Manager."
I do not see it on my first laptop. I have other selections under the "Action" menu in my Hyper-Manager window but not a Virtual Network Manager. Went to my second laptop and that feature was missing on my second laptop too.
Where or how do I see it?
Thanks
PeterHi Peter,
"Virtual Network Manager" is used in 2008/R2 hyper-v .
In 2012/R2 it is named "virtual switch manager" .
They are a wizard to create/manager virtual switch .

Using Hyper-v within Windows 10 Enterprise Technical Preview to boot a Win 7 Legacy BIOS (Generation 1) Operating system client does not boot to PXE legacy network adapter after operating system has been installed within the Virtual Client.
Hyper-v Client will boot to PXE Legacy Network Adapter only when no other boot device is available and no OS is installed.
Hyper-V settings seem to ignore BIOS - Startup order within Hyper-V Client Settings and will always boot to VHD before Legacy Network Adapter even if Legacy Network adapter is first in the startup list.
IF VHD is deleted and a new VHD added to the Client then will boot to PXE using Legacy Network Adapter. Again once OS is installed then will not boot to PXE Legacy Network Adapater.
Gen 2 BIOS/UEFI works as expected and boots to PXE network everytime.Hi shaunmoncrieff,

Hyper-V Manager - Access Denied
I have a Hyper-V Server Core 2012 in a workgroup environment and uses Hyper-V Manager in Windows 8.1 to manage my Hyper-V server. It was working previously and when I try to connect to it today (it has been a month or two since I last connected to
the server using Hyper-V Manager), I got the following error message within Hyper-V Manager: "Access Denied. Unable to establish communication between '<server name>' and '<win8 computer name>'.
I had the same problem when I set it up initially but was able to get it to work by changing the access permission using DCOMCNFG.
What I also realized is when I right click on the Server node on the left pane, the Hyper-V Settings and Inspect Disk option seem to work.
Does anyone has the same issue and had a solution?
Thanks!Hi Dave,
The IP address was changed on my Windows 8 PC (it was using a static IP then was changed to use DHCP). After the IP was updated on my Windows 8 PC, I can no longer connect to my Hyper-V server using Hyper-V manager on my Windows 8 PC. The reason
is because on the Hyper-V server's HOSTS file (C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\HOSTS), the IP to hostname mapping for my Windows 8 PC no longer valid. I need to have an entry in the HOSTS file because both the Hyper-V server and the Windows 8 PC is not
part of a domain.
Please note that I'm trying to connect to the Hyper-V server using Hyper-V Manager application, not trying to connect to one of the VM hosted on the Hyper-V server.
I hope this help. -
Run hyper-v on physical machine with server 2012
I currently am running windows 8.1 with several 8.1 hyper-v clients. I am about to have to do a new install of the host os because i am getting a new faster drive. The convenience and speed of backing up and moving hyper-v clients to different systems is
so easy i was hoping i could take advantage of it for the future. i would also like to use some of the functions of windows only available in the server edition of windows. as a dreamspark student you can get a free copy of windows server 2012. I have not
set up a windows server, but i have run a Linux and bsd one. I only have 1 physical machine. Does it make sense at all to install windows server 2012 and then have all of my working systems be hyper-v clients? i play games and have a nice graphics card. the
clients i don't think use them directly, but would use it via the host i think. I also use visual studio for app dev and i beliebe VS installs a Virtual like machine for windows phone. Can i do this? what would it prevent me from doing that i currently
do? is there a better way to go about this? maybe do the reverse and run the server in hyper-v? thanksPersonally I'd say it depends mainly on what you want to do with the desktop side of your machine. You certainly could install Server 2012 onto your desktop, and from reviews I've seen it's far more suited to being used on a desktop setup than previous server
versions. You still have to do some additional work to enable some of the functionality you'd normally have on a desktop, but which would never be found on a server, but it is more plausible now. There's a bit of a discussion here of the possible issues and
gotchas
http://www.eightforums.com/general-support/7520-windows-r8-windows-2012-server-makes-great-laptop-os.html which cover some of the main things you'd need to do.
If you're just looking to play with Windows Server and the functionality you're looking to use isn't Hyper-V related then I'd probably go with simply making the Windows Server 2012 another instance on your existing setup, eg within Hyper-V on your 8.1 desktop.
There's no real difference between hyper-v on windows 8 and server 2012 so that side of things doesn't make a difference, and windows 8 is quite capable of handling server vm's (I've got 12 VM's running on my windows 8 desktop, and none of them are client
OS's).
The main thing which would dissuade me from installing Server 2012 on a desktop is support for other desktop applications. If you're planning to continue using the machine as a desktop, and especially if you play games on it, you're bound to hit issues
with compatibility at some point. Not legitimate compatibility, more situations where some apps will try to detect the OS you're running, and either not recognise the server OS and refuse to install, or recognise it and refuse to install as they're only designed
/ licenced to be install on a client OS. Some apps which are free to use on a client installation for instance require a licence for use on a server (since it's assumed to be commercial installation). -
Setting up LAB AD Sites in Hyper-V
Hey all,
I have setup my lab within Hyper-V 2012 R2 with Server 2012 R2 running AD, DNS, DHCP, etc. However I want to strip my lab back to hyper-v and start again to use this for setting up and testing AD Sites.
So my question is how do I go about having an AD structure with a root domain and two child domains without having them all on one virtual network and able to talk directly to each other. So I would like DHCP in each of the child domains without them being
able to see each other however they should still be able to speak to the Root Domain. Obviously I am trying to test having a split site AD on a LAN.
Is this possible or am I better to add extra physical NIC's to my Hyper-V Server and use a physical firewall to setup what can talk to each other?
Thanks,
CharlesIt's no different than how you would set it up for a physical environment. In a physical environment, you would most likely have multiple netword segments. Set up the same environment with virtual switches on Hyper-V. As Alexey points
out, you will need router(s) of some sort in the environment to route from one network segment to another. And, you would want to ensure that the router(s) don't forward DHCP requests as you want to keep the requests on a single network segment.
You could set up Windows Server VMs running RRAS or you can download one of the Linux router appliances that can be found.

Virtual SAN Manager Hyper-V 2012 R2 iSCSI
I think I know the answer to this question, but one someone to tell me for sure....
We currently have iSCSI San's implemented in our organization. We are using Hyper-V 2012 R2 and doing nothing fancy with it. We could like to be able to take advantage of Virtual SAN Manager within Hyper-V to take care of the snapshotting, etc..
It appears that in order to use this you must have a FC SAN. Can someone tell me if this is a correct statement or not?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.Hi jesmitch,
Yes , it is .
plaese refer to following preparation :
One or more installations of Windows Server 2012 with the Hyper-V role installed.
A computer with one or more Fibre Channel host bus adapters (HBAs) that have an updated HBA driver that supports virtual Fibre Channel. Updated HBA drivers are included with the in-box HBA drivers for some models. The HBA ports to be used with virtual
Fibre Channel should be set up in a Fibre Channel topology that supports NPIV. To determine whether your hardware supports virtual Fibre Channel, contact your hardware vendor or OEM.
An NPIV-enabled SAN.
Virtual machines configured to use a virtual Fibre Channel adapter, which must use Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, or Windows Server 2012 as the guest operating system.
Storage accessed through a virtual Fibre Channel supports devices that present logical units. Virtual Fibre Channel logical units cannot be used as boot media.

Hyper-v Management network design
Folks
I am looking into some best practices ; here is the scenario :
Multi Node hyper -V cluster
each machine had two pairs of teamed NIC cards ( 2 teams/server )
storage network is a separate SaS network and no iSCSI ; so we will have followings for remains :
Cluster network
Live Migration network
Management network
VM production traffic
Our goal is to have an efficient network , so we are going to dedicate one Teamed-NIC to our external network.
we end up having one more teamed-NIC per server to manage cluster , Live Migration and Management network.
we do have separate switches for management environment ; so what would be the best approach ?
My thought :
1-Create different virtual NICs for cluster/liveMigration and Management within Hyper-V ; these NICs will be usable
through management operating system as well.
2- Assign different IP subnets to each network
3- Connect last Teamed-NIC to management switches ; configure VLAN and QoS ; so that cluster traffic gets priority .
OR .. should I configure QoS through HyperV virtual switch ?
Any thoughts ? suggestions ?Hi Ali,
"3- Connect last Teamed-NIC to management switches ; configure VLAN and QoS ; so that cluster traffic gets priority . "
I think you may configure Qos for your environment , please refer to following link :

WinPE within HyperV (Gen 2)
I'm trying to deploy Windows 8 over PXE within a Hyper-V VM.
I used the Assessment and Deployment Kit to create a PE environment that is served through my (Linux) TFTP server. But I have problems with getting the keyboard / mouse / network to work within Hyper-V.
The environment was created with the following command:
copype amd64 C:\tmp\pe
The boot.wim created in c:\tmp\pe\sources I have mounted with the following command:
dism.exe /mount-wim /wimfile:c:\tmp\pe\sources\boot.wim /index:1 /mountdir:c:\tmp\mount
For injecting the Hyper-V drivers I used the Windows6.2-HyperVIntegrationServices-x86.cab file within c:\windows\system32\vmguest.iso.
After extracting this cab file I have inserted every driver within it with the following command:
forfiles /p c:\tmp\drivers /s /m *inf /c "cmd /c dism /image:c:\tmp\mount /add-driver /driver:@path /forceunsigned"
Which returns it successfully added the drivers.
The Hyper-V VM is created as Gen 2 without the Secure Boot option. The Windows PE environment starts perfectly, but at the end, when the command prompt is opened and after wpeinit is executed, the keyboard / mouse, or network for that matter, is not working.
Can someone point me out which step I have forgotten to make this work?
Thanks in advance !Sorry, wrong account. please see below
Hello,
im trying set up a test environment, specifically trying to image a VM using SCCM2012 R2 and a local installation of hyper v on my workstation
I created a new virtual hard disk with my PE media inside, but when I boot off of it from my VM I receive an error from the PE environment immediately.
"Unable to read task sequence configuration disk. for more information contact your system administrator or helpdesk operator."
when I hit F8 I see that there is no network information assigned via IPCONFIG. do I need to inject some sort of driver into my boot image for this to work? I am using a GEN 2 VM so the legacy NIC situation shouldn't apply here.
I would very much appreciate any assistance.
