'ioreg' Process hogging CPU

Over the past 2 months since being dislocated from moving and not being able to use my iMac as my main computer, I've been using my Macbook Pro. Lately, it's been getting slower and slower each day, and I often have apps crash or have the spinning ball lots of times during the day for simple tasks such as copy-and-pasting, closing tabs, etc.
Today I looked at Activity Monitor and saw a process named ioreg taking 99% (maxed at 101.5) CPU capacity, and it's a process that just won't go away permanently (assuming it has something to do with the OS). Is there anyway I can fix this process to where it doesn't completely take up all of that CPU %?

Does the its parent process (being "launchd", owned by root) give us any other clues?Not lot. Since 10.4, launchd has become the first process created by the kernel on startup, replacing init, so ultimately it is the parent of everything. But it does mean the process is started independent of any logged-in user.
Many processes, even those directly owned by launchd, are only "launched on demand, but this is controlled by a .plist in one of the "LaunchAgents" (for logged in user tasks) or "LaunchDaemons" (irrespective of logged in users) directories in /System/Library or /Library.
I cannot find any reference to "makequeues" in those folders, so lets do some detective work:
Open the Terminal (from /Applications/Utilities) and copy and paste the following into the Terminal window, one line at a time, with a return after each line:
launchctl list
sudo launchctl listAfter the second command, you will be prompted for your password. This is not echoed for security reasons: just type it and press return.
If you haven't used 'sudo' before, you will receive a little lecture before being prompted for the password. Read it and continue
Copy and paste all of the output (include your commands) and post it here. You can type exit to get out of being root.
The first command will very likely produce no output, unless you have login items. The second should list all daemons started by launchd as root

  • Mail Can't Open & com.apple.internetaccount process hogging 100% CPU

    Desperately seeking answers after Mavericks install..
    My mail crashed and now won't open at all. I've tried most (if not all) the suggestions posted by others.  Haven't tried deleting and reinstalling mail yet, as this will be my last resort since I have a work account in it that is not on IMAP.
    And another troubling issue is my macbook's fan is going crazy and feels like its overheating.
    Looking at "Activity Monitor" I see a process "com.apple.internetaccounts" that is taking 100% CPU and 1.6GB of memory!!
    No idea what this process is and can't seem to quit it.
    PLEASE HELP!!! Thanks in advance

    @Drewli77 yup that's it. When Mail opened I chose Google/Gmail and let Mail set the account up for me.
    Before doing that I had noticed com.apple.internetaccounts hogging the CPU. I went into System Preferences > Internet Accounts, waited 10 minutes for the spinning ball to stop, then deleted the Google account in there. There was only one Google account in there, despite the fact that I have four Google accounts set up in Mac Mail. Anyway this one account seemed to be what was slowing down that preference pane. After deleting Accounts.plist I re-added my accounts in Mail, which added them to the Internet Accounts preference pane, but now that preference pane (and Mail) open just fine without hogging resources.
    What annoys me is the fact that hitting Delete on a message sends it to Trash, which in Mavericks corresponds to Gmail's Trash, meaning it gets purged every month (regardless of the setting you choose in Mac Mail). I've been using Option-Delete to Archive it, but I wish I could just use Delete for that, since I always Archive and rarely Trash messages. I would set another folder to be used for Trash, but sadly, all of the options under Mailbox > "Use this mailbox for" are greyed out.

  • Mobiledeviceservice.exe hogs CPU

    mobiledeviceservice.exe hogs CPU. It takes 98 to 99 % of resources.  Trying to upgrade the operating system to 5.0 but its been hung up in the back up process for 4 hours.

    I have a single core laptop it won't work eats 99% of cpu, it's the mobile device service. I couldn't update my iPhone 4 to the latest iOS5.
    Also I can't access iTunes to get my contact list or music from iTunes with my new iPhone 4S because I have to update to iTunes 10.5 to do that or buy a quard core laptop.
    I do have two quard core PC's on in shop and one in bits, but my laptop was always my backup, maybe I need a new laptop but can't afford one atm.

  • MDNS responder hogging CPU when connected to network

    Hi all.
    It seems whenever I'm connected to my work's network (either via wired or wireless) my mDNSResponder service starts hogging CPU. It generally starts at 0 and works its way up to 70-80% total CPU usage. I can kill it but within a few seconds it starts back up again.
    Any idea what the problem is or how to fix it? This has never been a problem in the past, and as far as I'm aware there have been no changes to the network.
    Thanks!

    My first psychic guess would be a messed up .cache, but...
    mDNSResponder (also known as mdnsd on some systems) is a daemon invoked at boot time to implement Multicast DNS and DNS Service Discovery.
    mDNSResponder listens UDP port 5353 for Multicast DNS Query packets.
    When it receives a query for which it knows an answer, mDNSResponder issues the appropriate Multicast DNS Reply packet.
    mDNSResponder also performs Multicast DNS Queries on behalf of client processes, and maintains a cache of the replies.
    mDNSResponder has no user-specifiable command-line argument, and users should not run mDNSResponder manually.
    To examine mDNSResponder's internal state, for debugging and disagnostic purposes, send it a SIGINFO signal, and it will then dump a snapshot summary of its internal state to /var/log/system.log, e.g.
    sudo killall -INFO mDNSResponder
    Also, not sure if this applies to OSX or not...

  • Ptpcamera is process hog: but is it doing anything?

    So I plug in a mobile phone to charge via usb when I get home, which I rarely perhaps never do, and activity monitor shows 60%/30% CPU usage on the core duo.
    So because I have other things I want the machine to do smoothly right now, in particular running a time machine backup quickly so I can get out of here, I quit it to no ill effect.
    Basically, I hate iPhoto, so do I care about this process, e.i. need it for any other reason? If I don't need/want it to auto run (since it just endlessly consumes CPU cycles w/out any benefit), is there way to disable it in OSX? Terminal? Any info would be helpful, thank you!
    p.s. (yes, I looked it up somewhat, basic info at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PictureTransferProtocol
    not much of a link, but basically what's out there).

    "So let me try to understand what you are asking. So you don't want iPhoto to launch when you connect your mobile phone? From iPhoto menu>Preferences>connecting camera opens:no application. Other than that perhaps I misunderstood your post. "
    Thanks for helping me clarify:
    The ptpcamera process is doing nothing on my machine that I can perceive other than consuming 1/2 of the available clock cycles. It does this when I plug in my new camera phone via it's USB cable. At no other time has ptpcamera made itself known to me.
    All I know about the process is that it is supposed to be a "Picture Transfer Protocol", but no pictures are transferring, no apps are opening. I searched for changed/new docs, there are about 10 new 300kb .ithmbs but that's it to show for a looong time of chugging away.
    My actual goal is to keep the beachballs to a minimum. I do plenty of processor-intensive things so the last thing I want is some random process-hog chugging away in the background doing nothing.

  • Windowserver suddenly hogs cpu with Lightroom and Photoshop

    I recently upgraded these software packages to 64bit and upgraded NIK plugins for each to the 64bit versions. Since then I've had problems with PS freezing while making adjustments using a NIK plugin (doesn't appear to be plug-in specific). Looking at the Activity Monitor I see windowserver up to 90+ cpu usage. Sometimes if I just wait it will recover, sometimes I have to shut everything down.
    Anyone seeing this problem while using this software and if so have you found a remedy? This never happened while using the 32bit versions of all these packages.

    My understanding is that windowserver is an OS X application independent of software used. My question is whether others have seen windowserver start hogging CPU time while this specific software was being used and any Mac remedies that solve the issue. It's not an Adobe question.

  • Safari hogging CPU and won't run

    Sorry for posting here, but I couldn't find the Safar for windows section.
    I run WinXP (fully up to date), with 2Gb RAM, (with one 1Gb on my gfx card), 1.8Ghz processor
    Having updated to the latest Safari I'm finding that it hogs CPU so much so that when I select a page from the top sites screen my PC locks up and I have to use the application manager to kill Safari.
    The same thing happens when I try to go to a website just by typing into the address bar.
    Anyone having similar issues, or able to help me out as to how to fix it?
    Thanks

    Try turning off plug-ins, java, javascript
    Empty history, caches, etc or go to where XP would store the application temp files, in Windows Vista/7 that is AppData\Local and \Roaming
    Disable or turn off extensions, 3rd party can break with any Safari update
    make sure you have current Flash etc
    I'd stick to Firefox or something - use NoScript, HTTPS Everywhere, FlashBlock, etc.

  • Kernel_task cpu hog % CPU 324.6  CPU Time 3:07:33. Why?

    There appears to be a lot of people with this problem and still no solution from Apple!
    In the past month the kernel_task has bloated on the CPU usage, the attached screenshot
    is pretty much standard, sometimes a reboot helps but its back within an hour or two of
    running the machine, and its become very frustrating in terms of workflow, did not get this
    previous to Maverick, so something has been added to this OSX build to cause the machine
    to crawl. Tried rebuilding persmissions, zap PRAM, turning off extensions etc. it still comes back
    again and again.
    System CPU Load is at 84.22% leaving very little for the user, and making machine very unresponsive.

    Delete the failed user launchd job from ~/Library/LaunchAgents - Use the Finders Go menu, (hold alt) and select the Library to view the hidden folder.
    It should be called com.nds.pcshow.unlaunch.plist this is trying to run in the user account so it shouldn't be the problem.
    Are the kernel extensions up to date?
    Have you seen this known issue with WD software?
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6202
    There is also a massive thread with users complaining about data loss on 10.9.
    REMOVE or update these WDTools!
    The same should be done with the other extensions, update the software that you use, remove any that you no longer need. To remove it find an uninstaller, or check the developers site for removal instructions (or search here for manual removal steps).
    The Launch Daemons and Launch Agents run as the system user so these can potentially cause issues across the system - again update or remove the software that installed them. Deleting the job files will only remove the task, the software could still conflict.
    P.S. kernel_task is responsible for communicating between the hardware & the software (it is process 0) - it is normal for it to use lots of resources, so you may not see much improvement, you really need to be more specific about the issue as you see it. It could be due to other connected hardware, remove it & retest.

  • ICal Process Hog

    My iCal severely hogs so much processing that when it's open on both my laptop and desktop, performance of both Macs deteriates to a crawl. In the Activivity monitor I can see that when iCal is active the % Idle can sometimes display a negative value.
    I removed all my calendars and imported them. No errors or other problems were reported. I reduced the number of calendars, thinking maybe it was having problems with 10 separate calendars. Now I have 5 and the problem continues.
    What's worst is that iCal alarms display and do not respond at all if I want them to snooze, close them, or display the event. I get the spinning color wheel and nothing else happens. Sometimes I can't close an alarm notification either except to close the window of the alarm entirely and which may include another alarm I'd like to set to snooze but cannot access. There is an alarm that shows up for which the event has been deleted. How weird is that?
    I've tried deleting the iCal preferences com.apple.iCal.AlarmScheduler.plist, com.apple.iCal.helper.plist, and com.apple.iCal..plist. Still things are still performing poorly. Occassionally, the alarm notification does respond, but it's gotten so bad I have to use another application for alarm reminders. I prefer just using iCal.
    Any suggestions on what to do to rid the iCal processing hog and non-responding problem?
    Thanks!

    I am having the same problem. Any help on this out there?

  • "Translator" process is hogging CPU, causing crashes - what is it?

    So in the past few weeks, my machine has seemed slower and slower each day. In the past week, my mouse will jump across my 2 screens erratically. I thought it was either the mouse or USB port so tried different configurations until it occurred to me that, on random days, after a random startup; all is well.
    I popped open the Activity Monitor and now can confirm my problem. My machine works great when the process "Translator" behaves itself. Every time I get the erratic mouse, slow window response and (every time) an eventual freezing of my screen requiring forced restart - Translator is hogging all my CPU. If I sample it, my machine crashes to a freeze. It I get more info on it, I can see that Translator has to do with syncservices (why do so many problems on 10.5 have to do with syncservices?). I have tried Googling for more info on it, but there doesn't seem to be anything out there. If I force quit it (standard quit doesn't work), my system will hang.
    Does anyone know what this is and how to fix my problem?
    I know the standard next steps (create a new user account and migrate files sans ~/Library, re-install OS, etc.) but am afraid that the problem will resurface if ties to syncservices (I do use Mobileme to sync, have an iPhone and an iPod). I guess I'm looking for more info before proceeding with drastic and time intensive measures that may very well yield the same problem despite the effort.
    Any help would be very much appreciated. It is worth noting that it took 5 full minutes for me to correct my spelling in this post due to the erratic mouse. Good times. I am off to restart - again.
    "Translator" is process ID 1027 running under my user account.

    So by removing the Exchange sync for my Address Book prefs, I was able to completely clear-up the problem. That link to opendns was VERY VERY interesting. I looked at my routing tables and indeed, they hijack google DNS entries and cause all sorts of havoc as a consequence. As junky as my ISP's DNS service is (RoadRunner/Time Warner in SoCal), I believe I will switch back to them as I find I don't get the original problem, with Exchange enabled, when using their DNS instead of opendns.
    What a mess and my thanks for the quick eye (I am going to mark your post as the solution for me)! I can't say that I am certain whether this is solely an opendns issue or if it is an issue with Exchange sync on the Mac, separate from opendns; however I am in a position where I don't really require either so both disabling Exchange and removing opendns are acceptable to me. Hopefully both Apple (exchange support - possibly fixed in Snow Leopard?) and OpenDNS (the idiot idea to re-route google dns) address their issues and can use issues such as mine to replicate the problem.
    How would a home user with either little desire or knowledge ever diagnose an issue such as this? For every person like me, there has to be 10 who would believe their mouse needs replacing, then take it to the shop after that doesn't work, then get a new machine, etc. An entire sub-economy seeded by a simple software-based issue.

  • ITunes 10.5 has three processes that hog CPU 100%

    Since I updated iTunes to 10.5, there are three proceses that hog the CPU to 100% and everything comes to a screaching slow mode. These are APSDaemon.exe, MDCrashReportTool.exe, and AppleMobileDeviceSerivce.exe. Even when I close iTunes, these processes keep running and continue to hog the CPU.
    I am running Window XP on an IBM (Lenovo) Thinkpad T60 machine with 2GB Ram and T2500CPU @ 2.00GHz.
    What are these processing doing that takes so much CPU poawer. Before iTunes and iPad updates, they use to function properly.

    When I called Apple Support to ask about the 100%  CPU usage, they wanted to charge me because my Ipod was out of warranty.  I insisted on talking to someone and finally got to talk to a software engineer for free.  He said that he had never heard of the problem in his three years at Apple.  Nonetheless, he sounded really interested and suggested that it might be a conflict with anti-virus software.   I deleted the antiviruse and that DID NOT HELP AT ALL.
    It seems as if Apple could care less.    There is no official response.   Their primary response is to look at the Forum.   At least you find out that the problem isn't your fault, it really is Apple!!!!
    So far the best solution is just to delete iTunes and use Mediamonkey to sync your pod.
    Apple, please fix this!!!!!

  • The Firefox.exe process hogs 25% of my CPU resources even after I've closed it.

    On a relatively consistent basis, when I close the Firefox windows I have open, the firefox.exe process doesn't end. When I go to open Firefox again later, I get the error message that I can't open Firefox because it's already running or not responding. When I look in Task Manager (on Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, BTW), the firefox.exe process is holding steady at 25% CPU usage along with whatever memory usage it already had consumed, even though the Tasks tab doesn't list Firefox as being open.
    == This happened ==
    A few times a week
    == I'm not exactly sure. It sort of just started on its own.

    Ed, this kind of issues are, unfortunately, more common and the we'd like. Thankfully, 99% of the cases are very easy to solve. However, you do need to diagnose what your exact problem is. Do this:
    #run Firefox in [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode safe-mode] to disable all extensions, themes and plugins. If this fixes your issues, be them with RAM or CPU usage, then you know it's a problem with plugins, themes or extensions. Proceed to number 2. If safe-mode doesn't fix the issues, then read bellow, after this list;
    #update all extensions, themes and plugins in your Firefox. If this doesn't solve the issues, proceed to the following number;
    #disable all extensions, themes and plugins in your Firefox (not running safe-mode). Being certain that, as in safe-mode, the problems you're having have gone away, enable one plugin at a time. You should be certain that you WANT that plugin to be enabled, so keep your overall number of plugins as low as possible. When you encounter the problems, you know you've found a problematic plugin, so disable it for good. Keep enabling all plugins (except problematic ones) until you've gone through them all.
    #enable one extension at a time. Again, be certain that you WANT that extension to be enabled, so keep your overall number of extensions as low as possible. Also, try the theme you want to have installed so see if that is what's causing the problem. When you encounter the problems, you know you've found a problematic extension/theme, so disable it for good. Keep enabling all your extensions (except problematic ones) until you've gone through them all;
    #you're done! You've fixed your problems with problematic add-ons. If you want to keep using those problematic add-ons, please contant their author for support.
    Ok, if disabling all extensions and plugins through safe-mode didn't work to bring Firefox's CPU and RAM usage to good levels, then you have different issue. The most likely scenario is that you have a third party software running on your computer that is messing with Firefox. Do as follows:
    #try reinstalling Firefox. No data will be lost. You can get the latest version for free at [http://www.getfirefox.com/ getfirefox.com]. If that doesn't fix the problem, proceed;
    #do a virus/malware check on your computer. If this doesn't fix it, proceed;
    #disable all software running in the background that you don't want to have running in the background (in windows, this is done by pressing WINDOWS+R in your keyboard, typing "msconfig" (without the commas) and pressing enter. Now, under the "Startup" tab, you can uncheck the software you don't want, and reboot your system for changes to take effect. If you're unsure of what software you want running, ask someone with more experience). If this doesn't fix your issues with Firefox, proceed;
    #check your firewall/antivirus/security suite for enabled functions/features that you don't want and/or may be conflicting with Firefox. You'll find that these features are most likely tied to Internet Security features, such as link scanners or URL checkers and the like. If you're not sure they are conflicting with Firefox, simply try to disable them to see whether or not that's true. As long as you don't browse the web with your antivirus completely off and your firewall completely turned off, there should be no problems. If this doesn't solve the issues, proceed to the following number;
    #check your operating system security options, mainly advanced options that are not configured by default. While it's very unlikely that this may be the cause of the problem (after all, it's the last item on the list), it's remotely possible. If this doesn't work, proceed to the following point;
    #update your modem/router software. There have been some reports that some modem/router software may cause Firefox and other browsers to loose performance and/or stability. If updating doesn't fix your issue, try other versions of the software, if possible. If you need support with this, contact your modem/router manufacturer. If this doesn't help, proceed;
    #clean up your OS registry, using appropriate software. Make sure you've followed my instructions correctly, but if this all doesn't work, [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Managing+profiles create a new Firefox profile] (this can be temporary, of course) and see if the issues persist. Report here the results, so we can help you further.

  • Mail and safari hogging cpu - corrupt preferences?

    I am having a major problem when I run Mail or Safari under Mavericks on my iMac - they hog all the CPU making it hard to do other things unless I keep quitting the Mail Web Content or Safari Web Content processes using Activity Monitor. This also has shown up in other discussions on this board and no one seems to have a resolution to the problem. But the curious thing is that I only have the problem on my older iMac, but on my new MacBook Pro that also runs Mavericks, runs Mail with identical settings (and is accessing the same server) and runs Safari with the same bookmarks there is no problem. So the problem must be with something on my iMac that is causing Mail and Safari to keep running these Web Content processes and taking over the CPU.
    In the old days I would have assumed it was a corrupt Preferences file and deleted that, but no one has sugggested this. Is this possible? If so, what should be deleted?

    While everything had been working fine, this morning I installed the latest update to the operating system and I am back with the same problem (although I am only having Mail Web Content hogging the CPU and not Safari Web content this time).  I am posting below some information from the log as you suggested (sorry if it is too much but I don't know what you are looking for). • Message server hogs CPU when clients are disconnected

    Hi, I have a problem where java process for the Sun One Message Queue (3.0.1) hogs the cpu when a client is disconnected. I am trying to use the MQ in an environment where clients might crash and try to reconnect in an unpredictable fashion. Most of the time, when I kill the client and restart it, I do not see the problem. Sometimes, however, doing so makes the java process of mq take almsot 100% of Cpu and it does not go down unless i kill the mq process.
    I am using asynchrnous message listeners with transactions, on a persisted queue, although i saw this problem when transaction was disabled.
    Does anyone have any idea what might be the source of the problem? I hope it's just a matter of configuring MQ correctly, but i could figure it out. Help would be greatly appreciated.

    Are you running the enterprise edition and
    using round-robin queues with multiple
    receivers ?
    If so, you may be running into a timing related bug
    in multiple receivers that has been fixed in service
    pack releases of the software
    You should contact sun support to discuss testing with
    the lastest service pack.
    If not, can you provide more information (platform,
    # and type of receivers, etc) on how you are using
    the product
    Thanks
