IOS 6 "embed Segues" causes unresponsive view

WWDC 2012 contains a session video called: "Adopting Storyboards in Your App" that demonstrates how to embed view Containers by utilizing the "Container View" offered within interface builder for storyboards.
Playing with this functionality I'm running into unpredictable behavior that cause some of the views to be unresponsive.  Here is a general summary of what I'm doing:
1.  Drag a "View Controller" object into my storyboard and embed into a navigation Controller and assign my user-defined class.
2.  Drag 2 "Container View" objects and embed each one within the "View Controller" created in step 1.
3.  I insert a simple button on the left within the navigation toolbar when toggled,  moves the right embedded view to the right using the logic:
    UIView* rightView = [[self.childViewControllers lastObject] view];
    UIView* leftView = [self.childViewControllers[0] view];
    CGRect newPos = rightView.frame;
    newPos.origin.x += leftView.frame.size.width;
    main.frame = newPos;
4.  Sometimes, this causes my left view (UITableViewController) to not respond to touch events (within Simulator).  If I add code to move the view
back to it's starting point, the left view responds again.
Other observations:  The placement of my views seems to affect the unresponsiveness.  For example, I overlaps 90% of the left view with the right one and
when moved, it was fine.  If I overlap 80% for example, the left view doesn't respond - the right one always seems to respond.  In general, I have noticed that sometimes the views that are stationary, don't respond - depending on the placement of the view that I'm moving.  In all my tests, the view that I move always responds.
thanks,
Nick

Through more research, it turns out that when I move my view to the right, visually it moves but the region that responds to touch events doesn't move.  This is weird.  I posted the question on this under: https://discussions.apple.com/message/20858628#20858628
My initial thinking was that I was moving the wrong view but the 'view' property for a controller is the parent/root view and is the one I want to move.
I'm going to try all of this without "embed segue" containers but if anyone has a deeper understanding of why the visual representation and the touch region separates, that would help.
thanks.

Funny you should ask... At about the same time that the Xserve was discontinued, we also lost our channel rep of nearly 14 years. Right now we are not sure who our rep is. I have however, sent this to as many people in Apple that I could think of. And I plan on continuing to reach out to as many as possible.
The sad reality is that this decision is impacting customer deployments and the future of customer installations. Apple strives for market share and loves to tout those numbers. But the numbers we fought for over these last eight years are going to disappear.
As much as this impacts our business, we are making up for it in enterprise deployment of systems. We will survive and lead in our geographic area. I do not fear that. But OS X Server is a UNIX server and with it has come all of the benefits of a UNIX system, including legitimacy in a data center. The Intel Xserve cemented this reality because of its hardware configuration and form factor. Yes, we have G4 and G5s still in service. But those are mostly in all Mac shops that understand the benefits and can work around the buzz word limitations. But fortune 100/500 IT departments did not really get on board until the release of the Intel server.
Still beating the drum to raise awareness. Spread the word and talk to your Apple reps.
Also, ask about the direction that Apple's Enterprise team is going. If the news I hear is correct, then our fears about all things pro and enterprise going away are likely true.

  • IOS button press causes "unrecognized selector sent to instance"

Newbie Obj-C / iOS programmer here.  I'm sure this is a common and simple newbie problem; nothing complicated here.
I created a view-based application with the following files:
    MainWindow.xib
    PushbuttonAppDelegate.h & m
    PushbuttonViewController.h & m
    PushbuttonViewController.xib
I put one button on PushbuttonViewController.xib.
I want to drive an instance method ("pushed:") in PushbuttonViewController.m when it's pressed.  However, when I press it, the app crashes with the following log msg:
[NSCFString pushed:]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x4e0bea0
Various things that I have done:
    declared and defined - (IBAction)pushed:(id)sender; inside PushbuttonViewController.h&m
implemented pushed: to call NSLog, (but that never gets called).
added an Object to PushbuttonViewController.xib and set its identity to PushbuttonViewController.
connected the button to thePushbuttonViewController object's pushed: IBAction.
    cleaned and rebuilt frequently.
I have a feeling that maybe the PushbuttonViewController hasn't been instantiated or something?  I'm so new to Obj-C and iOS that I'm still very unclear about the whole chain of events, and what has to be connected to what.
Don't know if I can post a 25K zip file containing a sample project illustrating the problem...
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Chap

Okay, I think I solved my problem, and I'll describe it here in case anyone else comes looking...
I should NOT have "added an Object to the PushbuttonViewController.xib..." and "connected the button to [that] PushbuttonViewController..."
The PushbuttonViewController.xib came with a "File's Owner" of PushbuttonViewController.  I should have just created my IBAction "wires" from the button to the IBAction in the the "File's Owner."  By creating a second PushbuttonViewController object and wiring to that I apparently messed up the ability to send a message there.
(xnav -- I had a breakpoint at the top of pushed: but it was never being reached.)
So although I'm as yet unclear about all the magic the NIB performs, I'm past this one hurdle.
About that "Unrecognized Selector Sent To Instance" error - I'm betting that's a very common, generic error, almost like "seg fault."  Can anyone offer more details on what can cause it?  In my case, I was misled because my class DID, in fact, have a pushed: method.

  • I have iPhone4, IOS 7.1.1 - calendar view issues

I have updated both my iPhone and my iPad retina display to IOS 7.1.1. On my iPad I have the calendar view to see a list of everything in calendar, but on the iPhone I don't. I am unable to attach a screen shot so I'll explain what I can see:-
iPhone - I go into calendar and it's on a year view, I then click on today, then I click on the actual date, which zooms into a month view. I then have a few icons at the top. From left to right, I see the month/year, then a rectangle box with two lines underneath (no dots), then search option, then add entry.. I click on a day in the month and I cannot view the whole day, there is a tiny space at the bottom of the screen and it doesn't open fully so I can view by week or day. I used to be able to click on search and a whole list of all my calendar entries are in a list I can scroll through, can't seem to do that anymore!
iPad - I go into calendar and it's on a year view, I then click on Day, Week or Month view no problem. I click on search and I can see everything in a list format.
    Please help

thanks for the prompt reply.  Ios 7.1 is now advertising a new list view button.  It is on my iphone not my ipad.
Also I have done some more testing on swiping between the days or weeks in landscape.  It is working if I first swipe to the left ie back in time but not if I first swipe right ie forwards in time.

  • Update to iOS 5.1 causes iPhone to crash on "Restoring iPhone Firmware"

    Hello everyone.
I have been vry please with my iPhone 4 on Verizon for the last 6 months.  I was on iOS 5 which worked great.  Then this morning the AppStore icon had the familiar red circle indicating some apps had updates available.  I clicked Update All.  In there was an update for iOS5.1.  I clicked OK.
I gave me the usual License agreement etc… I clicked OK.
A few minutes later I looked at it and it showed a picture of a cable with an arrow towards an iTunes icon.  SO I plugged it to my computer and it launched iTunes.
iTunes tells me that my iPhone is in Recovery mode and I need to Restore.  Why is it in Recovery mode???  All I did was I clicked OK for software update!
I have no other choice but to click Restore.  It asks if I want to Restore and Update.  I click OK.
I downloads the software (25 minutes worth!!!) then goes through the motions.
    - Restoring iPhone software
    - Verify iPhone software
    - Verify iPhone Restore
    - Restoring iPhone firmware.
After it sits on that Restoring firmware with a striped bar for about 30 seconds, all of a sudden, a new window pops up and says "The iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored.  An unknown error occurred (1)."
iMac 2.4G 24inch .  OS 10.6.8  All my software is up to date as of this morning.  That includes the most recent iTunes.
Nothing else is plugged in the USB ports.
    I have restarted the computer.
No third party firmware.  No illegal mods.  No jailbreaking or anything, all on the up and up.
I have called Apple tech support but was put on hold for 30 minutes and finally had to go to work.
I have done a search on this and other boards but could not find a solution.  Would anyone have any suggestion?
    Thanks for any help.
    Bo

    UPDATE:
I tried about 6 or 7 times with no luck.  Maybe trying even more would have worked as Milis and some others have said.  But I ran out of patience.
So I called Apple tech support.  After a few minutes a woman answered, I explained the problem, she said that since it was out of warranty, it would cost $29 for a one time incident.  I said that since I did not initiate this problem I did not think I should have to pay for anything.  Then she put me on hold, and evidently sent me to the slow cue.  I waited for about 20 or so minutes and another woman answered.  She was very friendly and tried to be helpful but this was clearly out of her league so she transferred me to a specialist.  A very friendly british sounding woman came on and really wanted to get to the bottom of this.  She did a remote access to my computer so she could see the contents of the log files.  After a while, she determined that it could not be repaired.  She told me the phone had to be replaced.
So she filled out a request to that effect, gave me the location of the nearest Apple store and made an appointment for me.  I went there during lunch and they replaced my phone with a new (or new looking at least) unit.  They set it up and now everything is fine.  It is still on iOS5 but I really don't have any pressing need for iOS5.1 so, given this previous experience, I'm going to stay with 5 for a while.
Bottom line is that this was a real pain and huge waste of time.  But Apple support did come through without any trouble (apart from the waiting on hold) and got things fixed and working again.  The people I talked to did not have any idea of what might have caused this.  But one thing I was remember is this:  Usually I always do iOS updates through iTunes with the iPhone connected to the computer.  This was the first time that the update was started with the phone unconnected because it came about through the "Updates" panel of the phone's AppStore icon.  I'm not sure why this would cause the firmware update to go south but that is the only thing I can think of.
At the end of the day, I think I have to put that in the "You want cutting edge technology? well it's going to work most of the time but every now and then there will be the inevitable pothole" column.

  • Adobe PDF Plug-in for Firefox & Netscape ''9.4.1'' was causing unresponsive problems on my browser and I had to disable it . Is there anything I can do about this?

I was getting an unresponsive script warning on most web pages, but more persistent on Windows Live telling me to stop script or continue. I could view the pages by doing both and the only way i could stop the warnings from appearing was to disable the Adobe PDF Plug-in. Increasing the time for the script to run didn't seem to work either. It was taking too long for the pages to load and Firefox used to hang.
After disabling the plug-in it stopped doing it.
Does disabling it effect my browser in any other way?

    Hello Vivek,
I have learned I do have the latest Adobe Reader installed and that the plug-in is included in that download & install. So apparently the problem lies with the Firefox plug-in checker.
I did the ALT + H, while in FF, & deleted the file, retried update, using the Firefox Plug-in Checker w/same results.
Then I exited FF, did the Windows key + R typed in %APPDATA% & located it then deleted it, and now wouldn't you know the Plug-In Checker is not working, (We've encountered an error. Please try your request again later.)
Just gave it another shot & it's working . But still no joy, same results, showing the plug-in needs updating - being outdated version.

  • Editing scroll view frame size in IB causes table view to change

I suppose this is a continuation of the problems I was having with the table view resizing: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2618816&tstart=0.
I have a controller which needs to have a scroll view with numerous elements attached to it, including a table view.
I have performed the following steps:
    - Set the simulated interface elements of the owning view to a nav bar.
    - Added a scroll view to the main view in the nib file.
    - Set the file owner view controller subclass' view to the scroll view.
    - Set the contentSize of the scroll view to the desired size in viewDidLoad.
The problem is that the table view size/position are incorrect when I load the view in the iPhone simulator if I change the scroll view's frame size from 320x460. Basically, every time the scroll view frame size is changed, it causes the scroll view position and size to change.
However, there are times I want to make the scroll view's frame size bigger in order to edit items that might be offscreen when the application is first loaded, which becomes awkward if the size of the view in IB or in code without causing the table view size/position to change. I keep having to change the size of the scroll view frame, edit the items, change it back to 320x460, and then fix the table view.
Is there a way around this, such as a way to locking the size of a table?

    Hi Kaspars,
I would say there is atm no possibility to change the table view size dynamicly, because you can't input a formula into the size field so the size is fixed as you enter it.
    Best Regards,
    Marcel

    [Sorry for my bad english...]

Thanks, I really appreciate the information. The only problem is that I have to keep it as a power point presentation.   I convert from ppt to a video, so I need to keep it as power point.
I found these steps on the internet and followed them exactly, and went through the steps 3 times, to make sure I wasn't leaving anything out, and it just didn't work. I have a tech guy who's supposed to call me today regarding this issue, and hopefully he'll be able to go through it with me step by step to try and work it out.
Ultimately, these are going to be training videos that are going to be set up on a website, so they ultimately have to be saved as videos.
I'm keep trying to figure it out though.
    Thanks.

  • Do I need to have iWork on my iOS device in order to view files that are stored in iCloud Drive?

I was hoping that iCloud Drive would allow us to view files on our iPhones or iPads without having Pages, Numbers, or even Word, Excel, etc... When I did the update to iOS 8 I found that there was no separate app for iCloud Drive, thus no way to simply view files stored on iCloud Drive.  I understand not being able to edit the files without having iWork or Office programs installed.  Does anyone know if we will have this capability or if I'm just missing it?  If this option isn't going to be provided to us, I'll be forced to continue to use Dropbox to view files on iOS devices (even though we can't view iWork files on iOS Dropbox anymore...)

To elaborate on my question, this is what I was expecting.  The iPad and iPhone in this picture looks as though there is a place on iOS where you can see all of the files that are located in iCloud Drive.  You can also see that each file has an associated tag (the colored dots) which we were able to start using on Mavericks.  I understand that the Mac you see in the picture has iCloud Drive as a native(ish) drive on the computer which will be available with Yosemite, but I don't understand where on the iPhone/iPad these shots were taken from, assuming it's iOS 8.0
On the up side, I just received my iPhone 6 today to find that iPhone6 and 6+ users are given Pages, Numbers, and Keynote free for their iOS devices.

  • HT4528 How to setup Gmail on iOS 7 so you only view a certain amount of recent emails in your inbox?

In iOS 6 you could set gmail to view only the newest 50 emails.  In iOS 7 I cannot find this feature and really need it because I have almost 4000 emails that are showing up just for gmail and I only need to know the newest 50.  Has anyone came across a setting to fix this issue?  Or does Apple need to fix another bug?

Yep, and this same setting works on more than just GMail... other email provider accounts have this same setting.

  • HUGE stupid mistake iOS 6- no more street view in maps!

Yes, we can get Google Maps on our iphone 5 by going to maps.google.com on Safari (it will allow you to install it from the web and is NOT in the app store) but there is no street view on it.  The only thing that had street view was Apples's map app from previous iOS's.  Pop your finger on any street w/a yellow line on it, a pin drops and the left end of the text box that comes up is where you click for street view.  Now this area is just for driving direections which are not even accurate.  The whole beauty of maps is the 360 degree street view so you can see storefronts, what the streets look like, get an idea of neighborhoods etc especially when hunting for real estate!  Let's hope we can get the old Apple maps app back ASAP!!!!  3 -d buildings are nice to look at as a NOVELTY but are not useful for navigation.  Make it a free novelty app to use for fun but NOT directions!

Cool, thanks for the link tonefox... I can now use streetview on the iPad & iPhone. Its not as smooth as on the computer or laptop, but at least I can see what the address or place I'm heading to looks like, before I head out.
Weird that Google Maps has the feature, but gives no intuitive icon to engage it... maybe they want us to experience the joy of discovery?
    Thanks again for the help!

  • Ios 5 home button unresponsive

so i got my iphone 4 the day they came out here in canada and havent had a problem with it
shortly after updating to iOS 5 the home button started to become unresponsive. at first it was just once or twice a day and slowly got worse over time.
i took it in to a local apple store and they took it apart and cleaned it but were unable to resolve the issue they did help me set up assistive touch so i could at least get out of apps and back to the home screen.
the iOS 5.01 came out after installing it the problem went away completely for about a week and then started to reapper
I just did a backup/restore and hope that will help for the time being.
has anyone else had this problem and if so are there any solutions

My iPad 1 has the same problem, but it did in iOS4, too— affects both orientations, but sometimes one more than the other. (Which one is worse switches back and forth over time, though!)   It started about one year in to owning the unit, maybe a little less.
Alarmingly, I found that if I applied some gentle pressure to the back of the iPad in a sort of "uneven" way (more pressure on one side than the other) it often fixd it for a while, until the next time I put it in my bag or leave it sitting for a while.  Could it be a hardware issue, that you just happened to notice now because upgrading made you place the iPad in a certain way or press the home button a lot more in a short period of time while playing with it?
