IOS SLB transparent web-caches

Hi all,
I wanted to ask if anybody has implemented SLB with transparent web-caches, and if yes how was it done?
can anyone give me a short overview how to implement this? Because I couldn't find enough information on the Cisco site. We are able to implement SLB for various services, but unable to do the same thing with transparent web-caches.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
thanks

HI,
you can do this for example with a CSS (compare to http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/contnetw/ps789/products_configuration_example09186a0080093ff3.shtml). This is an example of how to implement transparent caching with a CSS. Same works if you are using a CSM. Required is using a Content Engine.

  • Only 'web-cache' gets redirected - no other service groups...

I have a Netcache configured for transparent caching for port 80 and 443. The Netcahce IP is 164.72.49.253. We have a 6509, sup720 IOS. 12.2(17a)SX3, configured to redirect web-cache and 1 to the Netcache. Here is the config:
    ip wccp web-cache
    ip wccp 1
The 6509 interface that controls the subnet the netcache is on is configured thus:
    interface Vlan1
    ip address 164.72.49.131 255.255.255.128
    ip wccp web-cache redirect out
    ip wccp 1 redirect out
We have a PC on another subnet connected to the 6509 that we are using to test the config, and we can only get port 80 to be redirected to the Netchace. HTTPS port 443 never gets redirected. Service group 1 is configed on the Netcache as tcp port 443.
Here is the output of 'sh ip wccp':

What would cause the router to no redirect service-group 1 packets to the Netcache?

The sup720 does not support wccp yet.
The commands are available and some functionalities may work but currently the sup720 does not support wccp.

  • Wccp web-cache -- can't get it working

I installed a Squid based caching appliance, by Stratacache. it supports GRE wccp redirect in transparent mode, I have it configured as wccpv2 using the Router's LAN ip address 10.250.1.2.
Every time I turn on the caching for a host (or the entire LAN) the internet breaks for whomever I turn wccp on. I have tried disabling CEF and have moved the cache to it's own router interface.

So I can see the packets redirected, the cache never sees them, the router and cache can ping each other, the cache and LAN clients can ping each other - am I missing something?

so I found the problem... hopefully this helps somebody else in the future... the problem is the redirected packets were sourced from the router multilink1 interface IP address and the cache was expecting them from the router fa0/0 interface, so it dropped them.
also the cache has a "spoof client IP" option that was on, because we prefer to do this for netflow, but, I don't think client-IP-spoofing works with the standard web-cache wccp service. It was causing internet problems so I turned the spoofing off and it works fine...
    hope this helps

  • Cisco IOS SLB or CSM?

I am trying to inform myself if Cisco IOS supports Server Load Balancing (SLB) without the CSM. It appears this software has been integrated into a hardware module known as a Content Switching Module. (CSM)
Aside from cost and being a hardware module (faster) in a IOS based Catalyst 6500, Is there a functional advantage / disadvantage of using the Cisco CSM over Cisco IOS Server Load Balancing or vice versa. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks.
    Mark

IOS SLB shares the same software code base as Cisco IOS and has all the software features sets of Cisco IOS software. IOS SLB is recommended for customers desiring complete integration of SLB technology into traditional Cisco switches and routers.
The CSM is specifically designed to meet the demands of large Internet service providers (ISPs), Co-location facilities, Application service providers (ASPs), and Enterprise web server farms.

  • Iip web-cache redirect command problem

    Hello,
There is sample in : http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/lan/c3550/12112cea/3550scg/swwccp.htm
Fast Ethernet interfaces 0/2 to 0/5 are connected to the clients and they are configure as :ip wccp web-cache redirect in .And Fast Ethernet interface 0/1 is connected to the cache engine and it does not configure as : ip wccp web-cache redirect out.
    in : http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/software/ios121/121cgcr/fun_c/fcprt3/fcd305.htm
The sample in this doc is configure as :ip wccp web-cache redirect out.
I want to know the different of :ip wccp web-cahe redirect out and ip wccp web-cache redirect in. And in which condition I shall use ip wccp web-cache redirect out and in which condition I shall use ip wccp web-cache redirect in ?

    Sir,
The ip web-cache redirect in command is only a new addition in the late 12.1 and 12.2 train of IOS. Both commands do the same thing except the redirect in is on the interface where client sourced traffic enters the router and the redirect out is on the interface interface of the router. You do no use both at the same time.
My preference is for redirect in as the router does not need to route the packet because wccp picks the packet up on the incomming interface.
    Cheers
    Phil

  • Web Caching Engine

I need advice on which Cisco product can be used to perform web caching to reduce our internet http traffic. Thanks in advance. We have about 2000 users in the campus.
    Ho

I can't find exact statistics on the throughput for the CE's. I did find statistics on the CE network module, which I didn't mention in my earlier post.
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/modules/ps2797/products_data_sheet09186a008010fb9f.html
This module can handle 200 transactions per second and 11.7 Mbps throughput running in proxy mode.
I can't find any similar information for the dedicated CE for some reason. Keep in mind that "concurrent TCP connections" or number of users may not be the best way to measure the load on the device. How big is your internet connection?
Also keep in mind that the device can run in transparent or proxy mode. In transparent mode, the device won't be a bottleneck if traffic is beyond it's capabilities. In proxy mode it would be.
I wouldn't want to say "this can support x many users". There are a lot of variables in selecting the product. I would talk to an SE to size your network more accurately.

  • Can Web Cache rewrite HTTP_REFERER headers?

Can Web Cache be configured to rewrite the HTTP_REFERER header to replace the Web Cache site address:port with the dispatched application server address:port?
    i.e.
If there is a Web Cache site listening on webcache.domain:80 and it is mapped to application servers: appserver1.domain:7778 and appserver2.domain:7778.
And a user requests page webcache.domain/page1, which contains a link to page2.
And then the user opens the link to page2, and Web Cache decides to send the request on to appserver2.
Can Web Cache be configured to change the HTTP_REFERER header from webcache.domain/page1 to appserver2.domain/page1?
This is important to our application, because we want to verify that our processing pages are invoked from our application validation pages (we know this method is not 100% tamper proof).
We would prefer to not have to change our application code to support Web Cache
Thanks for any info or suggestions, -Steve

    Thanks Jean
I've added comments to extracts from your post.
Let's say you suddenly get a request for p2, even if
it was from the history of the browser, it would still
contain a referer header of p1, and is no different
from what it would be when the user was going through
the proper steps? Are you saying the p2 generated from
your JavaScript will have a different referer from the
p2 generated from browser history? If so, how are they
differ exactly? The browser history does not include the referer. So p2 requested from the history list does not include a referer although the original link from p1 did.
Without Web Cache, the flow is:
Step 1: a user requests appserver/page1. page1 is added to the browser history. page1 is loaded and executes JavaScript to display page2 in an iFrame. page2 is not added to the browser history (just like style sheets and other embedded requests do not get included in the history). page2 is loaded and executes JavaScript to submit an html form to load page3 into a hidden iFrame and wait for it to load. page3 is added to the browser's history becuase it was submitted; not embedded. Assuming that the request for page1 came from the browser's history, favorites, a link from an e-mail (the usual for us), or was entered manually - there will be no referer for page1. The expected referer for page2 is appserver/page1, and the expected referer for page3 is appserver/page2.
Step2: while processing page3, the application compares the server name in the requested URL (appserver/page3) with the server name from the referer URL (appserver/page2), if the servers match, page3 accesses the database and sends the requested data to the browser
Step3: JavaScript in page2 detects that page3 has loaded, interprets the results from page3, updates the content displayed by page2, and returns control to the browser user
Since this works with your app, how is webcache in
front going to break it? Note that when passing a
    request
to the app server, web cache does not modify the
host header in the request.without Web Cache the browser sends requests directly to the appserver, so the request/referer entries seen by the application look like:
    appserver/page1 -
    appserver/page2 appserver/page1
    appserver/page3 appserver/page2
with Web Cache the browser sends requests to webcache, so the request/referer entries seen by the application look like:
    appserver/page1 -
    appserver/page2 webcache/page1
    appserver/page3 webcache/page2
This is because the Web Cache changed the request URL and did not change the referer URL.
So request to webcache.domain/abc will be sent to your
app server as is.I don't think so, doesn't the requested URL change as a result of the Web Cache mapping? i.e. webcache.domain/abc --> appserver.domain/abc
And since we do not change the referer
header, either, whatever works for your app now should
still work for you with webcache in front. This is
assuming you only do comparisons on the 2 hosts to see
if they are the same. Web Cache is changing one (request URL) of the two items (request URL and referer URL) that the application server compares.
The reason has been that we are
a cache, and in principal should be as transparent
as possible, so we try to stay away from app-sever/
apache like functionality.I support that principle 100% - from the application server perspective, it should not need to differentiate between a request directly from a browser, and a request that was issued by the cache on behalf of a browser.
The cache should completely pretend that it is the originating browser. A browser sends the request and the referer URLs. In application flow, a relationship can be inferred/required between the two URLs. Web Cache is changing one without changing the other and breaking the relationship that the application server would normally expect.
    But I'm still
not convinced that you need that in webcache. :)If we want to use Web Cache in front of this application, without changing the application, then we need it. :)
Of course, we could change our application, but the more I think about the principles involved, the more I believe that it is the cache that needs changing. However, I will take another look to see if there are other standard headers related to a request that are present with and without Web Cache, and that can be used to reliably compare the server in the request URL with the server in the referer URL. If there are, then I can happily change our application so that it will work with or without Web Cache.

  • IOS SLB HTTP Probe

Hi, I have a simple SLB setup with two servers running in directed mode and two 6509's running IOS SLB to balance between the two. The two servers are web servers and require authentication when hit so I am just testing using a http probe and searching for the 401 code. Is there any gotcha's with configuring the credentials on the 6509 to log onto the webpage? Cheers, Brian

    Can you post the following:
    1. debug ip slb probe
    2. debug ip slb probe conn
    3. debug rtr error
    4. debug rtr trace

  • IOS SLB and probe failure

    Hello,
we use server-load-balancing with IOS 12.1(19)E1
We have a problem if the server receives more connections following error messages “REAL 192.168.197.8 (HSSAT1-LX) has changed to PROBE_FAILED” and few seconds later “REAL 192.168.197.8 (HSSAT1-LX) has changed to OPERATIONAL” appears and so on.
We checked the server and they works proper.
What could be the reason for probe failed?
    My configuration:
    ip slb probe HS-PROBE tcp
    interval 5
    ip slb serverfarm HSSAT1-LX
    nat server
    predictor leastconns
    failaction purge
    probe HS-PROBE

    reassign 2
    inservice
    real 192.168.197.9 99

    inservice
    ip slb vserver HS.SAT1.DE
    virtual xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx tcp www
    serverfarm HSSAT1-LX
    advertise active
    inservice standby allvips
How does a TCP probe works? – I could not find more exact information in the documents to configure probes.
Is it better to use another probe (icmp)? – or without any probe?
When does it make sense to use probes?
    Best regards
    Stefan

    HI Stefan,
tcp probes do a complete TCP 3-way handshake and normaly terminate the session. A problem which I had some times timeout for a session to be established might be to short if the server is "heavy" loaded.
Probing on a specific method (TCP HTTP ...) is most of the times the better solution. Imagine a WEB-Server which is properly pingable but the httpd died due to some internal error. If you would probe on a per ping basis the loadbalancer will never notice this but if you monitor tcp-port 80 by a tcp probe or better a http probe you will notice this and the server would be taken out of the serverfarm. Even better but afaik not possible in IOS SLB is to probe a certain page e.g. index.html. As you know that the httpd is up and running and pages can be displayed.
Regarding the probing issue it might be usefull to read the follwing link describing healthmonitoring with the CSM
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps708/products_installation_and_configuration_guide_chapter09186a00801c5899.html#1024967
    Hope that helped.

  • IOS slb questions

    Hi,
    1. It is true that ip slb probe http is not working on 6509 without CSM card?
    2. Did someone had tested how many IOS SLB client connections can support a 6509 with SUP1A /MSFC2 without CSM card?
    Thanks,
    Yuti

The Cisco CSM accommodates a wide range of common IP protocols?including TCP and User Datagram Protocol (UDP). Additionally, the Cisco CSM supports higher-level protocols, including HTTP, FTP, Telnet, Real Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP), Domain Name System (DNS), and Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP).
The Cisco CSM allows full regular expression pattern matching for policies based on URLs, cookies, and HTTP header fields. The Cisco CSM supports any URL or cookie format?allowing it to load balance existing Web content without requiring URL or cookie format changes.

  • Web Cache 'Ping URL' not working.

    Hi,
I have recently installed a Webcache clustered pair which sit in front of OHS which reverse proxys back to OUCM/Web Logic, my OWC version is 11.1.1.2 and am looking for some clarification of how the Ping URL actually works in Web Cache.
When OHS is shutdown, Webcache detects the service is down and prevents it from servicing requests, however it will not mark the service as down when I intentionally set ping URL to a page that does not exist generating a 404, will Ping URL polling only mark a server as being down if a 500 error is generated?
Something else I would like clarification of is 'Ping Interval', I have set this to be aggressive at '1' however I do not see any polling traffic or see any hits in OHS log that indicate polling of the Ping URL is taking place.
    Thanks in advance,
    Mark.

Not sure I need any update to this now, I've just read through the help section 'help/edit_add_appserver.htm' and can see that a 404 is not considered a failure and also that the server only starts to poll when the failover threshold has been reached.
This would explain why the server was not being marked as down, although I'm still not sure why I do not see the polling traffic in Apache logs but I can live with that :)
    Cheers,
    Mark.

  • Standalone webcache or Web cache from Oracle Apps Server 10.1.2.0.2?

    Hi
I am installing web cache on two servers in web tier and J2EE server (with OHS) on another two servers in apps tier. Should I use standalone webcache or install from Oracle Apps Server package? If I choose Oracle Apps Server package, I have to disable Home, HTTP components. But it is DCM managed. Any suggestions?
And should I deploy my OHS servers on web cache servers in the web tier? In future we want to expand J2EE installation, we will deploy Portal with SSO, OID etc.

  • Cisco Web Caching Solution

    Hi There,
I need a high availability web caching solution for 500 users, preferential with proxy funcionality.
Cisco had the Cisco Web Caching Engine, but it is End-of-Sales already. The new product that will replace the EOS product, is Wide Area Application Engine (WAE) plataforms. Is that right?
The Cisco Global Price List has a SKU product SE512-IPROXY-K9 (Security / iProxy WAE-512 bundle, 1GB MEM, 1 250GB HDD Incl.).
    The question are:
The SKU product SE512-IPROXY-K9 is the right product for my needs?
What is the difference between the SKU SE512-IPROXY-K9 and the SKU WAE-512-K9?
    Regards,
    Pedro Vasques

    Hi Pedro,
The WAE product line does WAN Optimization which includes HTTP optimization. The WAN Optimization solution works between two WAEs (one being at a Branch office and the other being at Data Center ). When employees at branch office tries to access resources like Servers at Data Center their TCP based traffic gets optimized. For more info pl go to http://www.cisco.com/go/waas
Cisco's Web Caching was a different solution. It caches the web objects when first user goes to a given web site. The following user requests will be served locally as long as cache history is available for that web page.
I suggest you contact either a Cisco partner or Cisco representative in your area.
    thanks
    Nat

  • Problem in web cache cluster in 10.1.2.3

    Hi,
I'm using webcache clustering in Oracle AS 10.1.2. and there are 3 cluster members.
But all the requests are getting routed through cluster member 1. When i'm bringing down services(HTTP, webcache, webcache admin) of member1 i'm unable yto access my website.
when member_1 is working, i'm able to access site from all 3 web servers through both web cache http listener port and OHS listener port.
    Help !

I understand this is not an EBS related question, so please post your question in the appropriate forum for a better/faster reply -- https://forums.oracle.com/forums/category.jspa?categoryID=13
    Thanks,
    Hussein
