IOS-XR ping source

I've an issue where the source of my pings from a router are ideally sourced from a loopback.
For many host services the source-interface command can be used to set this. (ftp, tftp, ntp, snmp etc).
However for ping/traceroute , like IOS, no such command exists and it defaults to use the sourceIP of the the interface towards the destination.
In XR though (4.3.0) I'm seeing that specifying the source by interface name seems to take ~15 seconds to resolve  ; specifying the loopback's IP is fine.
Sourcing a ping by interface name on a 7600 is immediate.
Ideally ping/traceroute could have a source-interface command as well, but in lieu of that, using the interface name would be easier than looking up the IP every time.
Anyone else seeing this delay with using an interface name?

I found it.  The issue was related the the other part of my question.
I had not configured domain lookups to use the loopback as a source.  ;-)
Therefore I think the ping command was trying to resolve the interface name via DNS (?).
After configuring the following it's responding much more quickly.
'domain lookup source-interface loop0'
Sure would be nice to collect these source-interface commands within XR as opposed to many one-offs as
well as for enabling to do so for base services like ping/trace as well.
ex.
logging source-interface Loopback0
domain lookup source-interface Loopback0
ftp client source-interface Loopback0
tftp client source-interface Loopback0
snmp-server trap-source Loopback0
ntp
source Loopback0

  • DNS is waiting for AD to signal the initial replication has completed

    Hello,
First off, thank you for your help in advanced. Any help you can offer would be appreciated, and let me know if there's more information you need
me to provide, or utilities to run.
I have just joined a Server 2012 R2 DC to my Server 2008 R2 domain.  Topology is it only had one DC previously, the 2008 R2, running AD/DNS/DHCP.
I ran the forest prep & domain prep on the 2008 R2 domain controller, then ran a dcpromo on the 2012 R2.  From there, I migrated the FSMO roles over to the 2012 R2 server using ntdsutil.exe.  The ultimate goal is to retire the 2008 R2 DC and
bring on line a 2nd 2012 R2 DC for this domain.
    My Issues
Windows 7 client      PC's do not always resolve/pass traffic to the Server 2012 R2 server,      sometimes I need to ping
the server by IP before it will resolve, other      times if I just repeatedly double click on the shared folder mapped to the      Server 2012 R2 DC it will work eventually.  This is      intermittent/random,
and not always repeatable with any specific      procedures. Sometimes the user will be working, then all of the sudden      they can't resolve DNS to the internet, nor internally.
I am getting the following errors in the event log on my 2012 R2 DC
    Log      Name:      DNS Server

The DNS server is waiting for Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) to      signal that the initial synchronization of the directory has been      completed. The DNS server service cannot start
until the initial      synchronization is complete because critical DNS data might not yet be      replicated onto this domain controller. If events in the AD DS event log      indicate that there
is a problem with DNS name resolution, consider adding      the IP address of another DNS server for this domain to the DNS server      list in the Internet Protocol properties of this computer. This event will
be logged every two minutes until AD DS has signaled that the initial      synchronization has successfully completed.

not replicated successfully with any of its partners since this server has been restarted. Replication errors are preventing validation of this role.
Operations which require contacting a FSMO operation master will fail until this condition is corrected.
    FSMO Role: CN=Partitions,CN=Configuration,DC=carman,DC=local
    User Action:
    1. Initial synchronization is the first early replications done by a system as it is starting. A failure to initially synchronize may explain why a FSMO role cannot be validated. This process is explained in KB article 305476.
    2. This server has one or more replication partners, and replication is failing for all of these partners. Use the command repadmin /showrepl to display the replication errors.  Correct the error in question. For example there maybe problems with IP connectivity,
DNS name resolution, or security authentication that are preventing successful replication.
    3. In the rare event that all replication partners are expected to be offline (for example, because of maintenance or disaster recovery), you can force the role to be validated. This can be done by using NTDSUTIL.EXE to seize the role to the same server. This
may be done using the steps provided in KB articles 255504 and 324801 on.
The following operations may be impacted:
Schema: You will no longer be able to modify the schema for this forest.
Domain Naming: You will no longer be able to add or remove domains from this forest.
PDC: You will no longer be able to perform primary domain controller operations, such as Group Policy updates and password resets for non-Active Directory Domain Services accounts.
RID: You will not be able to allocation new security identifiers for new user accounts, computer accounts or security groups.
Infrastructure: Cross-domain name references, such as universal group memberships, will not be updated properly if their target object is moved or renamed.

  • Actual Settlement of IO

When I tried to do KO88, i keep getting this error:-
"Balancing field "Profit Center" in line item 001 not filled". How do i prevent such errors? Can I only settle IOs with the Source structure correctly in place? Does that mean that I can only settle IOs with cost elements declared in the Source structure?
    Pls advise.
    Best Regards,
    Ethan

    Hi,
If I enter my IO in a GL line item whereby the GL is not declared in the source structure and the settlement rule of my IO also has a GL which is not declared in the source structure, then does it matter? Am I still able to settle my IO?
THE GL, IN WHICH LINE ITEM  YOU HAVE ENTERED IO, SHOULD BE DECLARED IN THE SOURCE STRUCTURE.  SOURCE STRUCTURE IS NOTHING BUT THE " SOURCES FOR THE VALUES, WHICH ARE TO BE SETTLED". UNLESS THE GL's OF ALL THE LINE ITEMS OF THE IO, ARE DECLARED IN SOURCE CTRUCTURE, YOU CANNOT SETTLE IO.
Sometimes when I settle my IOs, I also rcv error mesgs saying that a particular GL needs a CO assignment. Why is that so? -  AM NOT CLEAR WITH THIS QUESTION.
    All the best.

This server is the owner of the following FSMO role, but does not consider it valid. For the partition which contains the FSMO, this server has not replicated successfully with any of its partners since this server has been restarted. Replication errors are
    preventing validation of this role.
Operations which require contacting a FSMO operation master will fail until this condition is corrected.
    FSMO Role: DC=shankarpack,DC=com
    User Action:
    1. Initial synchronization is the first early replications done by a system as it is starting. A failure to initially synchronize may explain why a FSMO role cannot be validated. This process is explained in KB article 305476.
    2. This server has one or more replication partners, and replication is failing for all of these partners. Use the command repadmin /showrepl to display the replication errors.  Correct the error in question. For example there maybe problems with IP connectivity,
DNS name resolution, or security authentication that are preventing successful replication.
    3. In the rare event that all replication partners being down is an expected occurance, perhaps because of maintenance or a disaster recovery, you can force the role to be validated. This can be done by using NTDSUTIL.EXE to seize the role to the same server.
This may be done using the steps provided in KB articles 255504 and 324801 on http://support.microsoft.com.

  • Join-Request not received by WLC

    Hi all,
I'm in the process of upgrading autonomous 1242(MIC) APs belongs to an external client of to make them part of the existing lwapp based infrastructure.
I could observe successful Discovery negotiation.Next,AP sends the join-request but WLC debug does not indicate receiving it.
1.wireshark packet capture indicates that Discovery & jOin processes use indentical ports at each phasee-this will rule out the firewalls.
    2.no duplicate IPs
3.controllers are not exhausted with APs
4.DHCP option 43 is configured and could see it in action when I do a dhcp debug
The other interesting observation is that I could not see any certs on autonomous APs before conveting them to lwapp when I issue sh crypto pki certificates
Please refer to the attachment for debug outputs.
    Any help is much appreciated.
    cheers,
    janesha

    Hi,
I found the AP manager address and as you predicted it does not respond to an extended ping sourced by the new subnet.Tried the same with a subnet where the APs are happily working in lwapp and the results were the same.
Packet capture on the AP shows that Join-request is sent to the AP manager address. As expected, AP tries sending to AP manager addresses of all 4 controllers before giving up.
Client confirmed that they have opened the subnet to all traffic from my side of the network.
I will try spanning the uplink port of the controller sometime today once I dig up info on the uplink port.
    Thanks for the advice.
    cheers

  • Ipv6 addressing

    Hi guys,
    Need your expert advise.
ISP has given me a /64 block and an ethernet link to their PE router. I have an isr router with 2 fa. I want to give each fa an ip address from the block above.
I tried using subnet calculator and applied /120 on each fa. I can ping sourcing from the fa (connected to the isp cable) successfully. However sourcing from the other fa, i cant.
    Is there anything missing?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
How is your ISP side interface configured?. Is it with /120 mask or /64?. If it is /120, you should make sure the ISP have a return path pointing towards you.
if it is /64, you need to enable proxy arp in your interface towards ISP cable.

  • BGP PROCESSES AND ICMP TREATMENT

    Hi everybody
I hope you guys are doing fine.
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/do
    cs/ip/border-gateway-protocol-bgp/107615-highcpu-bgp.html#understandbgp
    From the above link:
While BGP scanner runs, low priority processes need to wait a longer time to access the CPU. One low priority process controls Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) packets such as pings. Packets destined to or originated from the router may experience higher than expected latency since the ICMP process must wait behind BGP scanner. The cycle is that BGP scanner runs for some time and suspends itself, and then ICMP runs. In contrast, pings sent through a router should be switched via Cisco Express Forwarding (CEF) and should not experience any additional latency.
1)Are we saying the pings sourced from the router will be switched using CEF above?  Just want to confirm that.
    Please consider the following example:
    CE----------R1-----ISP CORE---
Above CE is customer router connected to R1 for internet connectivity.  R1 carries Internet routes in a service provider network
So If we issue pings sourced from R1 to CE, will this pings  be CEF switched?   will the ping replies from CE destined to R1,given lowest ICMP priority, even though CE is responding to R1 pings?
    Thanks

    Hello Sarah,
    I hope you are well
ICMP packets originated by the router or destinated to the router are processed by main cpu not by CEF, they are actually placed in an internal queue waiting to be process switched by the main cpu and this may expose them to some delay as explained in the link about BGP scanner. (this is called punting to the main cpu the packets are punted). The same happens for protocol messsages.
The reason is that the packet needs to be examined to prepare the appropriate answer.
So going to your example, the CE node will process switch the ICMP echo request coming from R1 and will process switch the ICMP echo reply to R1, the same happens for R1, that has a full internet table, it process switches its own requests and CE's replies.
So it is R1 the more likely device  to introduce delay variation.
in other words  the RTT of ICMP packets may vary depending on when they are issued.
Traffic going through the router is CEF switched and far less impacted by BGP scan process.
    Hope to help
    Giuseppe

  • How does "Find iPhone" work for a wifi-only iPad?

My wife's iPad is in out home on a satellite internet connection, in the country, connected to our router which assigns it an internal IP address. Yet when I log into Find iPhone from my iPhone, it shows up right inside the house most of the time, within 200' or so other times. Now the "circle of uncertainty" is larger then my wife's iPhone, it's still pretty accurate given the way it's connected. This baffles me.
    Thanks,
    Gamma

It does – the OP is using multiple iOS devices, the iPhones have GPS which is used to submit data to Apple via the diagnostics & usage. It may also come from other iOS users who have the same feature enabled.

I suspect the reason that your cellular iPad is getting accurate locations is because your modem is broadcasting a wifi access point. IP's are a poor indicator of location, despite what CSI tells you
That access point will be added to Apples database. Your iPhone has a setting that will help with this… 'Settings > General > Usage > Diagnostics & usage', if Automatically send is enabled then you are reporting anonymous data to Apple, including the location of the networks you use, the same network that is in range for the iPad. Apple is using iOS to crowd source the data.
Not true at all.  A cellular iPad also has a GPS receiver and it obtains location information from GPS.  GPS signals are separate from and completely unrelated to both the Internet and the cellular telephone network.  GPS signals come directly from the GPS satellites.  They provide signals that allow GPS receivers to calculate latitude and longitude information.  Software inside the device translates latitude/longitude into landmark information, such as street addresses.
I was referring to the GPS on the iPhone.
I know how GPS works thanks, I can see 4 satellites in this hemisphere, the others are out of view
I was also assuming this was a wifi iPad (no cellular, no GPS) - hence the reason for the original poster surprise. However I may have simply read 'wife's iPad' as 'wifi iPad'?

Thanks Isaac, but unfortunately this issue persists and I am still getting that error for the client failing to register in dns

    Description:
The system failed to register host (A) resource records (RRs) for network adapter
    with settings:
       Adapter Name : {9C8B441A-8831-4B60-8470-D7D3982B3471}
       Host Name : alexis
       Primary Domain Suffix : domain.com
       DNS server list :
          10.30.0.1, 10.30.0.2
Sent update to server : 10.30.0.1
       IP Address(es) :
         10.0.0.167
The reason the system could not register these RRs was because the DNS server contacted refused the update request. The reasons for this might be (a) you are not allowed to update the specified DNS domain name, or (b) because the DNS server authoritative for this name does not support the DNS dynamic update protocol.
To register the DNS host (A) resource records using the specific DNS domain name and IP addresses for this adapter, contact your DNS server or network systems administrator.

  • How does IOS choose what IPv6 source address to use?

    I have a 3750X with IOS 15.2.2E.
I have multiple IPv6 addresses on the default VLAN (VLAN 1):
    ipv6 address 2001:470:...../64
    ipv6 address 2001:470:...../64
    ipv6 address 2605:A000:..../64
I have one default IPv6 route:
    ipv6 route ::/0 Vlan1 FE80::.....
    S   ::/0 [1/0]

My question is: when I issue a ping from the 3750X, how does the switch choose what source address to use?
Currently, it seems to use the 2605:A000 address, but why?
    Can I change this behavior?
    Thanks!

    OK,
How about my second question: Can I change this behavior in IOS?
    Thanks!

  • I have just updated my Ipod to the latest ios.(deleting everything) and using different sources to get my music back it seems that every time i select multiple/individual songs on itunes i can change artwork but will not show up on my ipod?

I have a windows 8 computer and have recently updated my ipod to the latest ios and it has wiped my Ipod clean except for my photos. whilst trying to get my music back using different sources like CD's and stuff i cant seem to get any album art to load on my Ipod? I can go on itunes and highlight single/multiple items and change the artwork and my computer will confirm it but when I look on my Ipod it doesnt display any art work or allow me to change the artwork that is already there? i need help please!

Album artwork can be added/changed on songs via the iTunes Get Info menu item from the File menu. Note that music that you loaded from CDs will not have any artwork. If you want to aquire artwork you can try the File menu item Library > Get Artwork or you can download artwork from the internet, etc. Note that just changing artwork on your computer won't affect the iPod until you sync.
If the artwork is correct on your computer iTunes then delete all the music on your iPod by syncing with iTunes with no music selected. Then reload the music onto your iPod by again syncing with iTunes with all the music you want selected.

  • After updating my iPhone 4 to iOS 5, I can see it in iTunes in the source list, but after selecting it, there is no summary or anything to configure my sync options. I just see 'iPhone' written. What can I do to fix this?

I just updated my iPhone and my iPad to iOS 5.
Restoring the backup just worked fine as well as syncing the music and videos, but my Apps weren't synced at all.
With my iPhone I got it done, after I installed some of my apps using the cloud and suddenly the all were installed during the next sync with my iTunes. All the stored data of my apps were on the iPhone, so I didn't loose anything.
But with my iPad, this didn't work as well. I seem to have to install all apps by my self from the cloud.
But my major problem is, that when I connect my devices to my Mac Book Air, they are shown in the source list, but except for showing 'iPhone' or 'iPad' I see nothing. I can't configure any sync options, so I am not able to do change or do anything.
When updated to iOS 5 I used to restore the backup from before updating my iPhone/iPad in iTunes.
    Thanks for your help.
    Best regards,

You should be importing all pics taken with the iphone to your computer regularly as you would with any digital camera, particularly before any update or restore.
You should also be syncing your contacts to your computer regularly.  They hsould be in whatever program/service that you have selected to sync.
If you have failed to do this, then they are very likely gone.
You can try restoring from backup.

you are running the latest version of iTunes, have no other USB devices attached, have no security software installed, and are directly connected to your ISP source, simply restarting the computer and the iOS device can clear up certain issues that could prevent you from restoring. After restarting the computer and iOS device, attempt to restore again.

How big is your library?  I would recommend the following troubleshooting steps:
    - Backup your library.  Always a good idea before messing with things.
    - Create a new library.   Refer to this article for details:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1589.  This won't delete your old library, you're just creating a new empty one.  Also refer to this article to get back to your old library later.
    - Add a few albums into this new library.  Not everything, just a small sampling, as a test.
    - Activate Match on this new library.  You shouldn't have to re-pay, it should just say "Add Computer" or similar.
    - At this point, Match should run again. With just a few albums it should complete in just a few minutes.
If iTunes doesn't crash at this point, then likely there's something about your original library that Match doesn't like - what that is I don't know, but at least you'll know it's not your PC.   If iTunes still crashes, then if could be a number of other things, but probably not your library.   My next suggestion (if you haven't already done this) is to uninstall / reinstall iTunes.   If that doesn't work, then my next ideas you won't like.

  • HT2052 are there sources for apps that will run in iOS 3?

I have a 1st generation iPod touch, which I have upgraded to iOS 3.1.3, but it seems as though there are no apps that will run in less than iOS 4.  Are there any sources for older versions of the apps that will work?

There are still a some apps that will work with the 1G iPod with iOS 3.1.3. However, there is not way to search by compatibility. You just have look at the Requirements section for the app.
You can only use apps purchased from the app store.
